Nine years of happy dining at Maize. The format has changed several times (currently a 3-course prix fixe, with popcorn, biscuit and cookies as added goodies), but the quality remains top-notch. Service remains warm, attentive and friendly (now featuring MJ, Katrina and Dakota as the service team). Amazing food. We've been there twice. First time had a girl hostess that was sweet and attentive. Decided to treat my daughter and son in law the second time around and had Matthew as host. He was terribly insulting. To be fair, we changed our reservation time twice, being my daughter and and her husband we're traveling from NYC after work I was so excited to treat them to Maize, but it backfired. Matthew was annoyed about my husband asking about appetizer portions and then so my son in law and husband we're both insulted by Matthews remarks and demeanor towards us. A wonderfully unique dining experience. The food and service were stellar. This is the kind of place you go to for a leisurely dinner as everything is made to order (and they tell you ahead of time that the food will take a little longer to prepare than at other places). We were told that the menu changes 3x/week! However, one item always remains as the fave and that is the bison steak. That's what I had (with mashed potatoes and spinach because I try to avoid creamy items like the creamed Swiss chard that it would have been served with). It was one of the most AMAZING meals I've ever had. Have it at the temperature they recommend. :) I had mixed field greens (w/figs, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette) as a starter and my dessert was the chocolate terrine (kind of like a mousse with an expresso sauce that reminded of tiramisu). We went to Maize for the first time last night and were absolutely delighted with the entire evening. From the moment we walked in we were impressed by the entire experience. Our waiter, Liam, was pleasant and presented each course with a full description of what the chef had prepared. Being a big eater, I was concerned that I would leave feeling less than full, but that didn't happen. Every course was perfectly done and the melding of flavors was amazing. A MAIZE ING!!! From the first step through the door to the last bite of the homemade chocolate chip cookies. I had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful dinner at Maize on a Friday night in September 2011. The small dining area allows the Chef to personally prepare all the dishes in the open air kitchen in the rear of the restaurant. We had a group of 14 and while we waited for the stragglers to show up we snacked on their signature popcorn. It was coated with olive oil, garlic & parsley. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to try and make it at home. I had the Heirloom Tomato Salad, Baby Greens, Tomatillo Dressing. It was basically lettuce on top of tomato's. As simple as it was I did enjoy it. I had the chance to try a friends Seared Scallops which were cooked just right and melted in your mouth. Several Maize regulars raved about the Bison steak so I had to indulge and try it. Everyone was right! This cut of meat was fantastic. I ordered it medium rare. (next time I'll get it rare) I would put this dish up against most of the Filet's I've had in the past few years. My girlfriend had the crab cake and it was packed full of crab and didn't have much filler. The corn salsa that accompanied it was a nice addition. Once our group inhaled dinner I was the only person that wanted desert. They had a few things on the menu but I didn't really dig them. Earlier in the night I was perusing other diners tables and a apple / ice cream desert caught my eye. I asked our server if they had anything not on the menu for desert and indeed they did. It was a roasted apple, ice cream & a small cinnamon tasting cake. I'm glad I had room for desert because this small plate was a good one. As I finished my last bite the home made chocolate chip cookies arrived. They were about the size of a silver dollar and the chocolate chips were made into a smiley face. From start to finish Maize has there SHI* together and most foodies would enjoy this place immensely. read more

One of the best meals we've had in a while. As it was late on a Thursday night we were the only couple at the restaurant. This was quite the experience as we didn't have to decide what we would be eating off of a menu. It was a prix fixe 5 course meal. It was fun not knowing what we would be getting next. I called to make reservations, and the person I spoke to on the phone was pretty rude and turned me off from this place. However, the reviews were good enough that I still wanted to try it. When we actually got there, the staff was very friendly. It was also my birthday, and the guys in the kitchen seemed so genuine and wished me a happy birthday. They started us off with popcorn, which we polished off quickly. Next up was biscuits with honey and butter. The biscuits were really fresh. And they gave us honeycomb! I've never had that before. I think they made the biscuits just for us, which meant it took a little longer but we weren't in a hurry. The entrees were also very good! I got the Rockfish, with butternut squash puree, pistachio sauce, and spinach. I was really savoring it, taking my time, not wanting the last bite to disappear. The two people I was with both got the duck. I tried and didn't like it, but I think it was just my personal preference. They both liked their food. To finish off the meal, they give you a chocolate chip cookie. Also baked fresh. And the cookies formed a smiley face! The presentation of everything was very nice. I would highly recommend that you try this restaurant. Don't come if you just want to grab a bite to eat and go. It's nicer, locally grown, seasonal foods that you should savor. read more

Very nice portion size for price (compared to Philadelphia!) Very impressed with the thoughtfulness of each dish that left the kitchen. At one point a dish left the kitchen by accident and the chef ran out to get it! Very good quality food. Perkasie people are probably very turned off from the price of this place but the food here does NOT come from SYSCO food distributors!!!! You will pay $20-30 for a meal and $8-13 for an app, but this isnt nasty frozen, reheated, refried sh*t from any other restaurant 4 miles away!!! Hands down my favorite restaurant to go to. Do not be fooled. This is no first date spot. Your meal will take 2.5-3.5 hours total but it's well worth it. Maize is BYOB so take advantage and bring the good wine and even better conversation. This chefs way with flavors is divine and the food is incredible. First time back since it changed to the 8 course only. Still FANTASTIC! Each course well thought out with contrasting flavors and textures. The pace at which the plates were served was perfect. We went last night for my husband's birthday. This was a first time for my husband. I've been once before. We selected the 8 course tasting, Chef's choice. We were so impressed by Chef Matt and his staff. It definitely was an experience. The sauces were subtle and tasteful, nothing was blackened or over salted like some nice restaurants we've been to. Elegant with interesting pairings of meat and vegetable/fruit that one would not think would go together. But everything was blended nicely as far as sauce and protein. The vegetables didn't even taste like the vegetables. We hate carrots, and we ate them because they didn't taste like carrots anymore with how it was glazed and cooked. Everything melted in your mouth. We started off with seafood, then meats, then intermezzo, then dessert. The swordfish was divine. Expect 3 and a half hours of your time and BYOB. First I want to say that the food is spectacular. The two gentleman in the kitchen couldn't be nicer and expert in the imagination and preparation of deliciously unpretentious gourmet goodies. Now is the time I hope they have also retained their sense of humor which I found to be charming and I know that it is not faked - just as the food is not. But here's my beef ... or my short rib of the two chefs - NO PLASTICWEAR! The oversight actually will begin a Maize tradition with me. I ate this awesome braised short rib dinner with a switchblade and the tiniest plastic fork I found hiding in my hotel desk drawer left from a previous - less grand - take out meal. These two brothers have made an intimate atmosphere, which enhances the dining experience. And the fresh ingredients bought daily really comes through in every dish. This is one of the top 5 restaurants I've been to in the burbs. 30 minutes and 30 un--motherfuckingfixed potholes north of Ambler, in the quaint town of Perkasie, resides an a-Maize-ing tiny little BYOB. The freshest ingredients, the creativity of food, assembly and presentation define this storefront foodie destination. The server (who also triples as bus-person and host) is terrific, well versed on each dish, presenting each menu item and each special with a special love for his role that one could envy. Dinner at Maize is a theatrical event. I couldn't wait for each next act. To start, a little bowl of popcorn coated with olive oil, chives and parsley (salt and pepper) danced on your buds as you sipped the first glass of wine. And, btw, bring two bottles of wine with you, maybe a bottle of vodka, for you will be there for two and one half hours if you order dessert. Next out were homemade warm to hot biscuits with salted butter and honey. We were on an up-slope at this point, with everything you put in your mouth getting better in stages, For apps the delicate and extremely melt-in-your-mouth tender pork cheek sat on top of a sweet potato puree and next to the most crisp, delectable snap peas. The contrast of three different food textures and related variety of colors was absolutely artwork you can eat. The seared scallops were crisp to the eye and the first entry of teeth, and then delicate and tender on your tongue, a perfectly cooked medium, which literally got so cozy in my mouth that it didn't want to leave. The two entrees ordered were the salmon with amaranth swimming gently in a grapefruit sauce and segments, and the fluke poached on top of al dente basmati rice and a few bursts of very tasty spinach with a creamy shellfish sauce. Both entrees were fabulous. It couldn't get any better, right? Wrong! The warm Polenta cake with braised blueberries and resultant glaze and olive oil ice cream sealed the deal This is one of the best experiences I have had in awhile. I dined at Maize with my Father on a weeknight in May. During dessert, he said something that perfectly captured the experience: "This [meal reflects] what a dining experience should be about--locally-sourced food, delicious, and great service." Ambiance: Maize is a small place and probably seats approximately twenty patrons. There is an open window into the kitchen, where you can see the chefs, Matt and Don, preparing each dish to order. If you are not already flushed mid-meal from a couple of glasses of your favorite bottle (Maize is a BYO), the warmth wafting from the kitchen will leave you aglow. Popcorn: Upon arriving at your table, your server will bring over a complimentary cup of freshly-popped popcorn. The popcorn is hot and lightly seasoned with olive oil and chives. Biscuits: After you make your menu selections, a second complimentary offering will arrive: hot, moist, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits straight from the oven. The texture is sublime, with the outside cooked to the right crisp and the inside crumbling softly and elegantly. Simultaneously fluffy and dense, crisp and soft, the biscuits are above all delightfully moist and are definite crowd pleasers. Each is accompanied by a pat of butter and a square of honey comb. Salad with Goat Cheese, Walnuts, and Figs: 5 out of 5 At an apercu, the salad is deceptively simple. A dark cross-section of earthy greens in the center of the plate are lightly drizzled with dressing and surrounded by walnuts and figs. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice two wedges of freshly-cut goat cheese, with the rind intact, under the lettuce. The figs are halved and the walnuts are kept whole. The chefs' choice to leave each element as close to its natural form demonstrates careful control and deliberate restraint and a homage to nature. The sweetness of the figs plays with the creamy lushness of the goat cheese and the twang of the vinaigrette. (I uploaded a picture above.) Bison Steak: 5 out of 5 A generously-sized bison steak sits atop a bed of potatoes and Swiss chard, forming an island in a sea of flavorful sauce. Everything fades to the background when you bite into a tender and succulent bite of meat. The steak has a crisp defined sear on the outside and is soft and juicy on the inside. The potatoes and Swiss chard bathed in jus are instantly addictive; you'll lose touch with reality when the flavors sing in your mouth. (I uploaded a picture above.) Hazelnut Tart: Creamy semi-sweet chocolate is combined with coarsely-chopped hazelnuts and served in a shallow pastry shell, atop a Frangelico semifreddo chocolate sauce. The warm chocolate oozed out of the rustic crust. My Father compared the tastes and textures to a hot cookie with melted chocolate that just came out of the oven. There was also a scoop of homemade hazelnut ice cream sandwiched between two cookies. Various textural contrasts: liquid versus solid, soft versus hard, crunchy versus soggy, and the hot and cold differences heightened the dessert's whimsy. (I uploaded a picture above.) Cookies: While it is rare that a restaurant gives you two complimentary dishes, the third complimentary offering of the night arrives with your check. Gratis chocolate chip cookies are sweet finales to the meal's bittersweet ending. Overall: If asked to summarize the experience at Maize in one word, it would be "warmth." Throughout the dinner service, a symphony of heat and aroma permeated from the open kitchen into the dining room. The affable staff go above and beyond to ensure the best possible dining experience. My Father has an extensive list of food allergies and aversions; every time we visit Maize Matt and Don concoct new and interesting dishes that always exceed our expectations. Though we don't know the chefs intimately, we feel like we do. And the personal touch and extra effort they extend to us is the same care and attention they lend to every customer, every dish, every time. I noticed Matt and Don looking up from cooking throughout the evening to catch a glimpse of the diners' delight as they enjoy their food. Most importantly perhaps is that the theme of heat is ever-present in each dish that arrives from the kitchen, from the hot popcorn, to the freshly-baked biscuits, to the seared bison steak on a piping-hot plate, and throughout dessert, with the poached berries in red wine sauce to the hot-out-of-the-oven cookies that accompany your check at the meal's conclusion. WAY overrated! This is another place that has me wondering why people seem to love it so much. The place is small, noisy, and the wait time is unreal to get your food. I guess they figure you will BYOB and drink plenty while you wait like the large table next to us of annoying drunken patrons. Don't come overly hungry because you will be waiting! Excellent cuisine! The tiny kitchen in this renovated row house in Perkasie cranked out an amazing variety of excellent food for a memorable and enjoyable anniversary dinner. Sweetbreads were tender and savory and nicely balanced by grits while a very elegant composed apple salad rounded out the appetizers. For the main course, lamb three ways (braised shank, sausage, and chops from the rack) was perfectly prepared and paired beautifully with a creamy mushroom risotto and the teres major (a cut of beef shoulder) was also perfectly prepared. We both finished with the delicious apple cake. The BYOB policy allowed us to bring a wonderful old bottle of our favorite cabernet, which was a bonus. Bring a good wine, worthy of great food. Service, including wine service, was great - attentive to our needs, but not hovering. The timing of courses was a little off with a long wait for appetizers, but the overall feeling was one of a very pleasantly leisurely meal. The crowd is a young one, especially later in the evening, and the small dining room got noisier as the night went on, but it's nothing like some of the deafening bar scenes elsewhere in the region, and we were easily able to maintain a comfortable private conversation. Maize is on a par with very fine restaurants in Philly or New York, and one of the very best in the Lehigh Valley/northern Bucks region. Enjoy! read more

After watching the positive reviews pile up and getting a great recommendation from our daughter who recently ate here we were finally able to make it to Maize. I am not sure that I can add anything to the previous reviews other than to say that waiting this long to go is a major regret. It is very rare to find a place that lives up to the reviews; in this case Maize exceeded it. The four of us did the 5 course tasting and it was a major dilemma to figure out which course we liked more. It was one of the finest meals I have had in my memory. The dining room was handled by a single man; Bob, who offered exceptional service and was fantastic when it came to describing the food and providing the background for it. He only added to the experience in a positive way. It was not a nice night outside and there were few people there leading me to believe that we might be served faster than the other reviews claim. The number of patrons has little to do with the speed of the kitchen; it is all about the art of creating great food here. It was fortunate we had good company, good conversation and an extra bottle of wine! I can't recommend Maize highly enough and can't wait to return. read more

My wife and I are so glad that we discovered this place! This is a small, but great little BYOB service delicious farm to table food. If you are planning on coming here, reservations are highly recommended as this place is small and probably seats 25-30 folks at most. We arrived a little early for our 7:30 reservation, but were seated right away. It took a little longer than I would have liked to have our waitress first make contact, but after that, she was generally attentive to our needs throughout the meal. We went with the 5-course chef's tasting menu (which the entire table has to go with if you decide to go this route) and all we were told is that the courses would be a seafood, fish, meat, salad, and dessert. We did tell them that my wife was gluten-free and that was not an issue at all. Our first course consisted of scallops, which I'm generally not a big fan of, but these were delicious! Our second course was swordfish followed by beef braised short ribs, which were to die for! Our salad course (oddly placed between the main entree and the dessert) was a beet salad. Once again, I'm not a fan of beets, and while not bad, this was my least favorite course. Finally, dessert consisted of a flourless chocolate cake with root beer ice cream. Once again...simply delicious! You are also given complimentary honey biscuits at the beginning and chocolate chip cookies at the end. While the portion sizes of each course were small, I certainly walked out plenty full. We liked that we could see into the kitchen and on our way out, we were able to thank the owner for a wonderful meal. The five-course tasting menu is $50/pp, which we thought wasn't too bad. Plan on about 2.5 hours to get thru the meal. Overall, a wonderful experience and we look forward to coming back one day. read more

The food is pretty terrific. It's really one of the best places around. Hands down. The only downside is that it is rather loud in there. This is mostly because the host/waiter sort of shouts and laughs at full volume and engages everyone in conversation whether they like it or not.
