I am loving the burrito bowls here (and at their downtown sister restaurant Toloache)! They have lots of vegetarian options and it's authentic Mexican so they offer different flavours than what you can find at large burrito chains. Their salsas are delicious and the bowls have the right balance of ingredients for a satisfying meal. I just tried the tres leches cake and was really impressed by a beautifully presented piece of fresh and fluffy cake! The horchata is also very good. Looking forward to trying more. You order and pay at the counter and seat yourself, they bring the food to you. In terms of manners, the staff seems to have the attitude where they are just doing their jobs, so they're not rude or anything, but no extraneous niceties. Service is fast though. read more

I went here with a friend for a second time and got the burrito bowl was not overly impressed with it I asked the girl when she gave me my order if there was utensils, she said yes, and for a second time like the first time I opened the bag to find no utensils not even napkins so wondering how they expect you to eat. I also asked for a side of pico de gallo and it basically was just chopped up tomatoes, and unfortunately, a few hours later, I was not feeling good. My stomach was quite upset. I love coming here and grabbing some tacos or either a huge burrito to have for lunch and then go do my regular day thing. I came here again with my friend recently for some tacos. I love their huge variety of tacos they have to offer. And on top of that, each meat are perfectly spice and delicious too! I ordered the Pastor (grilled pork), Barbacoa (Braised Beef), and Diabla (Shrimp). I love having different meats for each taco and they are extremely delicious. Each have their own varities of spices and they have different ways to cook them too! I love them all very much. They have tons of drinks to offer too and I always love their Horchata. Was walking around main st and decided to try this place out. Tbh, I was pretty disappointed. The tacos were not super flavourful and the texture of the meat was a bit weird. Also they gave one corn tortilla that did not hold up the sauce well. All of our tacos broke on the bottom. We also tried their nachos, it lacked a lot of flavour. Yelpers are not wrong about this place. It is definitely a 4.5 stars. Going through a Mexican phase right now. Trying to re/hit some new and some old joints prior my Yelp days of 2019. At first glance, Maizal RMF is trying to be more modern and futuristic than it needs to be. With the RMF (real mother %^#^*?) not sure if that can be avoided.... I digress, the food alone is sufficient. They could call this place Nuthouse, I would probably be back. From what we ordered, the ingredients tasted as fresh AF. The flavours burst in your mouth. Interesting they make the taco shells in house, the lady was literally kneading the doe right in front of us. This is such a rarity as most outsource this. A complimentary tortilla chips with guac and salsa with Yelp check-in. How awesome is that. The quesadilla with pork was my favourite- hot melted cheese and umami flavours. I was working in this area & needed a bite for dinner. Maizal had been on my radar for awhile & I was so glad to finally try it out! The location of this restaurant at Main St & 12th Ave is more of a 'passing by' location. The hustle & bustle of Main St is more towards the North & continues to get heavier the further South you go of this point. This 12th Ave & Main St intersection is extremely busy with car traffic as it is a major thoroughfare going all four ways. Now I really dig these very tasty delicious tacos. There's lots of side option hot sauces to burn your insides with - so pile onto your tacos to your hearts content! I ordered 3 authentic tacos - Pescado, Chipotle Chicken & Pastor. Hubby and I were both craving for Mexican food while we were in the Main Street area. Found this on Yelp and decided to try it because of the positive reviews. Maizal's interiors has a comfortable industrial feel to it. It is bright and clean too. Ample parking is available on Main Street. We ordered their chips and guac, fish taco, chipotle chicken and steak taco (daily special). Plus we got free churros with goat milk dulce de leche for free when I checked-in on Yelp! Loved the chips and guac! The chips were crunchy but not too hard that would scrape your gums and the guac tasted really good too. My order was the fish taco, it was a good sized cod fish fillet and it came with salsa, sauce and cilantro. I enjoyed the freshness of the flavours together with the battered cod. Hubby got the steak and the chipotle chicken. He enjoyed the steak a lot while the chicken was good. He said that he liked that it was simple, not too much frills but done really well. The free churros arrived freshly made and the goat milk dulce de leche was lovely (and I'm not a huge fan of goat's milk or cheese). Service was great as they were very friendly and prompt. Also, they seemed very attentive especially when it came to clearing plates and used napkins from the table. I was already planning to go to Sal Y Limon, but my bus took forever to come and I decided to go here instead. Another reason was that I saw photos from here for the Yelp event few days ago. Staff were helpful and friendly. I asked for permission to take photos and the staff was letting me to take some. I personally found the price to be expensive, but more of quality than quantity kind of thing. If you're big eater then YOU should order more items for sure! I had Barbacoa Torta sandwich ($8.50) and also had free Churro after Yelp checkin. Sandwich was yummy. Portion was smaller than what I thought. It was okay since I don't have a BIG appetite. Maizal is a quaint and casual mexican spot on the ever-so-popular main street. They just hit their 1 year anniversary! Congrats! :) My favourite items have to be the 2 desserts that they have on their menu. They make an absolutely delicious corn cake (I LOVE sweet corn) and churros with ice cream! They make everything from scratch -- even their corn tortillas, which is pretty rare in Vancouver! I also tried a horchata at Maizal for the first time, and O M G, I was blown away. Really tasty taco place around the Main street area. La Tacqueria and Tacofino have some serious competition. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside is modern but quite bare and empty. Basically it looks like a warehouse. Staff were friendly. The tacos took a bit longer to make than expected, but they do make them fresh. Pricing is a bit more than the competition at almost $4 per taco, but one has to pay the hipster premium. Pastor - pork with diced tomato and pineapple on top. Nice moist meat. The pineapple adds a nice zing. Carne Asada - steak with rice and beans, with guacamole on top. Quite tasty, though this one wouldn't rank too high on the adventurous scale. Pescado - piece of battered fish with some tangy hot sauce (hot mayonnaise?) on top and some diced tomatos. Also quite tasty, though one is basically eating fish and chips without the chips. They also have 6 types of hot sauce. Besides the 3 on the table (red, dark green, green), there are 3 more against the wall (red, dark red, green). Something for everyone, unless one is lame and doesn't like spicy. Overall the food was quite tasty, but the tacos (like the competition) are definitely on the small side. I will admit I left hungry and went straight for more food. Because of this I have trouble justifying 4.5 or 5 stars. In a nutshell, great food, but don't expect to fill up. read more

There are days that I don't wanna leave the house, but if you call me to Maizal, hands down I'd be there. In fact, I'd probably say yes to anything if you ask me to Maizal. I've tried about 5 of their tacos and my absolute top 2 has to be the Carnitas and Pescado. Carnitas has beer braised pork (just these words already sound so delicious) with some toppings and a scoop with guacamole on top of a freshly homemade soft corn tortilla. The Pescado simply defines fish deep-fried well and on point, bringing joy to my tastebuds. Owner and staff are so friendly and their smiles make me smile, no joke. Bonus points for Yelper perks - check in and get something, depending on their promotion. I ordered the horchata and was not disappointed at all. If you love cinnamon, you have to get this! I cannot wait to go back to try their churros. Just writing this review is tempting me to visit them today for a taco! This was our first meal in Vancouver. The ambience, service and decor is all nice at this place. It's a very casual walk-up and order style restaurant, with tacos, burritos, and other simple Mexican fare. I would dare say some of the food tasted fairly authentic, but there was one thing that really detracted from the quality of several of the dishes. And that was the gooey melted cheese on the burritos and tortas. While some people love runny melted cheese, this is not something I expected to find on Mexican food except maybe at an El Torito's or Taco Bell or other some such Mexican American chain that some gringos love but that I love to hate. It's just not my thing after having real Mexican food in Mexico. Why is there no queso fresco or other crumbly authentic Mexican cheeses like Cotija around for food like this? It would be so easy to fix, to make the food better by a factor of ten. Alas, this is not the case. While the torta bread was light and crispy as it should be, the chicken mole filling, while tender, had little flavor of mole, and the oozing cheese was just not doing it for me. My son's burrito had the same gooey cheese. My sopes were good, with crema Mexicana on top and the absence of cheese made them the one really satisfying dish I was easily able to finish off. So ok, this is Mexican on a budget, and the guacamole and chips were good too. But it could be so much better with so few changes. I have to beg to differ on the cheese-just swap it out for some cotija or queso fresco, and all will be well at Maisal. read more

You'll find a better deal at budgies, which I also love, but Maizal's food is much better if you're willing to pay for it. They didn't throw in a fork so that was a bit awkward - good thing the awesome people at Boca'O Food Truck didn't mind giving me a fork to eat my dinner with! This time I got the Asada Beef bowl. It's still so good. I don't know how to managed to pack this much flavour in without making it taste too oversalted. I'll admit that the taste is uniform throughout and could get boring for some after a while, but I personally love it so I enjoyed every bite. In fact, I could still taste the umami in my mouth the next morning, which prompted me to update my review again. Still one of my favourite places for Mexican food. read more

Wanted to try this taco spot. I have passed by before but always forget to go. Went in today around 730pm. Note: yelp says they close at 9pm but they closed 8 pm this night. Also you get a free churro just for checkin in on yelp, but you need to spend at least $10, which can be easy if you buy 3 tacos. A friend order a torta sub and he chose one of the chicken flavours for filling.He also order a couple tacos. I ordered every meat flavoured taco pastor, carnitas, barbacoa, tinga, chicken mole, pescado, and their special feature which was steak with bell peppers. To drink i ordered a horchata I get them all the time. If you have never had one it is like a churro flavoured drink. I liked all the tacos they tasted great. I love the pescado, barbacoa, carnitas and pastor the best. The horchata tastes yummy. I need to come again and try a couple of their other drinks. My friend loved the torta sub and was pretty filling. The free churro was thin but it was free so do not expect a big portion.Taste good not hard or too soft. My mom and I were getting a pedicure nearby and decided after to try a small Mexican restaurant we saw on Main Street. It's very casual dining inside, but we were very impressed by the delicious tacos we tried. We each ordered the Shrimp Diablo Taco on a corn tortilla and the Asada Harina Taco on a flour tortilla. They were both so flavourful and reminded me of the tacos you would find in Mexico. I especially loved the corn tortilla. The owner was very friendly and we both agreed we would definitely be back to try more of their delicious food. Maizal has truly authentic Mexican flavours and presentation. Love this place! Dropped by for lunch on a weekday. The decor is simple and clean. I tried their fish tacos. Highly highly recommend! It was absolutely delicious. We were so excited for our food, we forgot about the salsas by the counter! I also tried the carnitas, very flavorful! The quesadilla was decent, nothing special to it. The house made tortillas are thicker than usual, I enjoyed them nonetheless. Last by not least, they have fresh guayabana juice! It really does bring back memories from south America :) I also tried their churros, perfection!!! Not too sweet, and just enough cinnamon to it! Cute casual taco place at a convenient location! Food: the tacos are a good size but the taste tbh didn't blow me away. We got the fish tacos (and a variety of other tacos that friends got) which was good but not amazing. My friend got the bean taco and she said was quite bland but my other friend got the meat tacos and said those were good! The famous corn tortillas were very soft and sturdy. We also got the nachos which was huuuuge and a good appetizer to share! We got the quesadilla as well but I'd just skip that because it's just cheese in a tortilla. And of course their chirps!!! We got both the caramel one and the one with ice cream. I'd say just caramel is good enough. It's skinnier than churros I'm used to but very fresh and crunchy which I'd say all in all a solid 4 stars! Service: very nice people that work and own the restaurant!!! It has a very homey feel. And I got one free churro as part of the Yelp check in deal and the owner was so nice they gave me an extra one!! Drinks: they do have a nice variety of drinks including horchata. We got takeout and I think the food would've been better eaten in the restaurant. We were ready to eat in 10 minutes but the tacos were soggy already and the cajeta sauce had spilled everywhere (it's in a little paper/compostable container that would've benefitted from a rubber band to hold the lid on the container). Tacos: Pescado: oddly bitter. I usually love fish tacos but there was something in the batter that tasted bitter to me Pastor: kind of bland Plantain: sweet! I was not expecting or wanting a sweet taco (the few times I've had plantains, they tasted like potatoes, not bananas) Chicken mole verde: unfortunately the only one of the tacos I liked, but it wasn't great We also shared a chicken flautas which did not get soggy (tortillas were even kind of crispy at the edges). The sauce and toppings were all good though I felt that the chicken inside was probably unseasoned and a little dry so I depended a lot on the sauce and toppings for flavour. The tacos here were good. I ordered the fish and al pastor. The fish had a nice lightness to it and reminded me of my favourite fish and chips. The al pastor was substantial and had a good amount of meat in every bite. I really liked their drinks. The server gave me a sample of each (horchata, lime chia, jamaica) and I wanted to order one of every thing. I ended up with the Jamaica drink. It was like a fruity iced tea. Yum.
