I grew up in Southern California, and so I'm pretty picky about Mexican food. I wanted authentic, not Americanized. It matters whether the corn tamales are fresh and the right kinds of cheese are used. The quality of the jalapenos. The variety of the salsas. And especially the way the meats are seasoned and cooked. It seems like the farther I get away from Mexico, the more unreliable the Mexican food becomes (although I must admit, I did once have a great Mexican meal at a hotel in Sweden!) Anyway, Vancouver is pretty far from Mexico. And so the results are pretty dicey at a lot of the Mexican places around here. But Mi Casa really blew us away. It's a little hard to find, it's just a door with stairs going up. But once you're up there, it's quite, spacious, with picture windows lining two walls. I was pretty sure things were going to go well when I got my Margarita. None of that fake Margarita flavored syrup here, just real lime juice and a generous two ounces of tequila and a rim half salted without my having to ask. Then the enormous pile of nachos showed up, thoughtfully layered and covered in the right kind of cheese. Plentiful pickled jalapenos with just the right spice level. A mound of delicious guacamole. And an incredible chorizo. I've never even been much of a fan of chorizo, and if I'd known it was going to be on there, I'd probably have had them leave it off, but it really made the dish. It was complex and smoky, and its flavors infused everything. Honestly, these were the best nachos I've ever had anywhere. I also had the lunch special, which was two tacos. I chose pastor and cochinita pabil. Pastor is a longtime favorite of mine, and this was prepared in a very traditional way. It was excellent, but the cochinita pabil was even better. Succulent and plentiful. Some of the best I've had. My wife had two tamales with chicken filling. You could tell they were homemade with perfectly done cornmeal wrappers and served on corn husks. Service was friendly, and the server verified our suspicion that the owners were from Mexico City. I've dined in hundreds of Mexican restaurants, but I have to say this was the biggest surprise and was among the very top of all that I've been to. It really exceeded our expectations and will become a regular on our rotation. read more

Mi Casa I used to love you more but $25 for veggie enchiladas seems a bit much - would've been $30 if I added a side of guac. You are in a prime location so I get it, they are delicious (I love the veggie combo with spinach and mushrooms etc) but I just don't know if I'll be back anytime soon. The $12 single margarita was quite decent. You seem to still be busy with folks waiting for a table, so I'm happy for you! Your staff are always lovely andI do enjoy your casual vibe. You know it's not easy to find a good and authentic Mexican spot in Vancouver. As it goes, Mexican food in Vancouver is really for the "gringos". However, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mi Casa Mexicana churn out some really traditional dishes. My first impression of the enchiladas verdes was honestly nothing special, the enchiladas were a little dry but the salsa verde made up for any shortfalls. I only wished they were a little more generous! However, after a few beers, my friend and I decided to try the tacos since it was Thursday and they had a special for the night! This was when the night turned around. I always judge a good Mexican spot by their salsa and boy Mi Casa Mexicana did not disappoint. Their red, green and mango habanero salsas were on point and completed the tacos. I only wish I had an extra stomach to try every single taco, but I will have to come back another time. Finally, we ended with freshly made churros with a slightly over-thick caramel dipping sauce. Will definitely come back for when I get desperate and tired of chipotle. read more

Stumbled upon this authentic Mexican spot in Kitsilano! Located on Burrard and 4th, second floor right at the corner. Plenty of seating and quick service. I stopped by for lunch and had a quesadilla de birria. One corn tortilla with melted cheese filled with birria meat, onion, cilantro, lime and salsa for $12 -- it was delicious! Respectable tortas. Nice bread, succulent proteins. A little on the small side and a little light on the fillings. I almost wanted a bit more to supplement by $12.50 lunch and fill me up a bit more. I think it may have been missing the bean spread that was listed on the menu, and maybe that (or more of it) would have been enough to make it truly satisfying. This little gem serves up delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine. Owned and operated by a Mexican mother/daughter team who are delightful! Decor is bright, vibrant, Mexican-themed and the music will sweep you away to Mexico, making you feel like you're on vacation. Order the guacamole and chips to start. Guacamole is chunky and delicious with the house made tortilla chips. Staff is friendly and helpful - they always help me decide which vegetarian dish to try and happily accommodate modifications (I'm a vegetarian that doesn't like mushrooms!). Only "complaint" is that the service can be quite slow. Suggest that servers focus on getting drink orders in as soon as customers are seated. People tend to be OK with waiting for food if their drinks arrive early. :) Mi Casa is now my "go to" restaurant when I get a rare night out. read more

I tried the Chicken Quesadilla, A corn tortilla folded in half with melted cheese filled with seasoned chicken, decorated with lettuce, feta cheese, sour cream and pickled onions on the side. Sope, a traditional hand made corn tortilla with the sides squeezed together, topped with fried beans, onion, lettuce feta cheese and sour cream. Plain churros sencillos for dessert. A light pastry fried with a hint of cinnamon. All the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. I did not feel too full. My first time to try this and it was all delicious!!!! read more

Food was good. Boyfriend got the quesadilla which was essentially just a large taco with cheese but he still liked it. Not like what we normally expect. I got the tacos, tinga and the minced pork - SO GOOD. Didn't like the beef tho, quite simple. Service wasn't the best. Our waiter literally dropped off the machine and just walked away. If we wanted to we could've just walked out without paying. So there's definitely room for improvement in that aspect! read more

Stumbled on this place while getting my car serviced- I wasn't expecting much but that quesabirra with consume was the bomb and I wish I didn't live so far away. Very nice seating and ambience and it's on the second level so it's a got a great view of burrard St and 4th. Just call ahead as it may be hard to get a seat when it's busy. I've been to Mexico lots but this food is better than what you get at a typical spot in Mexico City in my opinion. read more

Just got takeout from Mi Casa and I'm so happy to finally have a spot for really good Mexican food. I'm in Vancouver for work but from Los Angeles and every Mexican place I've tried has been okay but nothing great. Now I've got my spot!! I got the pozole rojo and it was so delicious and came with tons of cold crisp lettuce onions and radish and I tried the tinga and conchinita pibil tostadas. Both were spot on and so satisfying and I can't wait to go back and try more dishes soon. The salsas were also awesome and all the chips tasted fresh fried in house. Former Pepita location for long time (never went) and more recent Hideout. Entrance on 4th as well as Burrard. What a find! Mother and daughter team who had a food truck prior to opening here. It's been a little over a week since they opened and was glad to see it relatively busy mid afternoon as they switched from brunch to lunch. The tripe based soup seemed to be popular (not my thing). At their recommendation, had a couple of things (pictured). This is probably the most authentic food (Mexico City) I've had in Van. Home made chips and salsa were brought to our bar seats to start along with three sauces: Pineapple habanero Delightful Smokey chipotle Salsa verde The food was full of bold flavour and executed near perfectly. Service was great and they are clearly passionate. They just received their liquor license and have a full bar. Open for lunch and dinner and closed on Mondays. It's a bit on the pricey side but worth it. read more

Accidentally served a guacamole appetizer and the manager, Ingrid, expected payment despite the fact that it was a staff error and UNEATEN. Lack of professionalism and zero customer service. Given her response, - or lack of - I was shocked she was employed there, let alone a manager! So disappointing. read more

We have now been to this restaurant 3 times - not because it is particularly fabulous - it's not. But the food is decent and it is very close to home. We have always thought the food and drinks very expensive. But tonight after paying the bill (and tipping 20%) we thought wait a minute this amount is actually over the top and we looked at the receipt. We had been charged $49 + tax for 2 Margaritas which were listed on the menu as $15 each. We called our server over to point out the error and after waiting for over 10 minutes went to check on what was happening. After a further wait our server told us that there was something wrong with the system and would we accept $19 cash (the difference between $49 and $30 before tax. We pointed out that we had paid tax on the $19 and expected to be refunded for the full amount. Our server handed us $25 and said "sorry about that". Remember we tipped 20% on the full amount so the $25 didn't account for the extra $5 tip we paid. You know that old saying "fool me once, shame on you". Well shame on this restaurant. We will not be fooled twice. There are other very good Mexican restaurants in Vancouver and we will be returning to them. read more

Went in and gave this place a try, it had great ambiance for a Saturday night. Started off with tostadas and a traditional tamal. The tostadas were actually pretty good and would definitely recommend but when I moved on to the tamal it was super Bland and was warm at best. I ordered the quesabirria as well and the tortilla had no crunch and the cheese inside did not cook fully which means it was not deep fried properly.The consommé was luke warm and tasted like water with onions thrown in there. Not only was the food lousy but so was the service as the waiter never checked up on us, and did not give us side plates or hot sauce when we asked for it. We received our drinks which was also warm after our food came! Definitely would not recommend as this place is pricey and serves bland food I'd rather recommened you save your money and order from Taco Bell! Just left a dine-in dinner at Mi Casa Mexicana. I'd probably give it 3.5 stars if that were an option. My husband and I were so excited to try this restaurant based on the excellent reviews and the fact that we LOVE Mexican food. We've eaten Mexican in Mexico, California, Texas ... everywhere. We each ordered a chicken verde tamale and a chicken mole tamale, preparado style. He also had a chorizo taco and I had a chicken sope. We ordered the chips and salsa for the table, a margarita and a horchata. The staff were all friendly. The brought our drinks in a timely manner and the drinks were tasty, but they forgot to bring the chips and salsa until reminded when they brought our tamales. To be clear, the restaurant was nearly empty so this wasn't a situation where the staff were super busy. The chips and salsa was a very, very small portion (maybe a dozen chips?) with a small side of salsa. Not worth $6.00. The chicken verde tamale was very good. I had a reasonable amount of chicken on mine, and it was attractively served open face on a corn husk. The chicken mole tamale was very disappointing. There was hardly any chicken at all in mine, mostly just a thick corn dough with a thin line of brown chicken bits in the middle. To be honest I couldn't taste mole at all. My husband's chicken mole had more chicken than mine, and he said it tasted good over all, but he couldn't taste the mole either. My husband's chorizo taco was "average good". The tortillas were tasty but it was basically just meat on a tortilla with micro amounts of cilantro and onion. My sope was different from any others I've had before. The chicken meat was mixed with a tomato sauce, and I wasn't fond of the flavour. The quality of the ingredients are fine, and the people seem very nice. I really want them to succeed, so I hesitated to leave less than a five star review. I also know tastes differ. Still I believe that they need to up the amount of meat that they put into the tamales, or at least be consistent about it. Also, if they are going to charge $6.00 for chips and salsa, it should be served as a large basket of chips and salsa, not a tiny offering that is usually complimentary at any other Mexican restaurant. read more
