Tasty but pricy Tex Mex place in Blood Alley. Basically found this place by accident. Parking is pretty non existent here. There are some spots a few blocks away. The venue is basically a random section of the back of a building. It's very shallow, so the seating is limited. Half the bar sticks out into the actual alley. The staff (owner?) was very friendly and chatty. Looks like he's making an effort to get to know his customers. The burritos here are solid. Decent amount of filling. There is an option for extra meat, but the price shoots up pretty quickly. They have nice draught beers here (2 types), which is nice. The burrito doesn't come with any sides. There are 2 in-house hot sauces available - yellow and green. Yellow has a real solid kick. The other dishes look good, but the portions look a bit on the small side (especially the nachos). Good place to have a drink and people watch.
Food was good. Only issue was the cook was washing dishes, touching dirty rag and his phone then touching food. Did not wash his hands once while we were there. Was grossed out by the dirty rag touching then the food handling after.
We stopped at this little hidden gem while on a food tour of Vancouver. We had other establishments in that tour as well, but Gring stood out as one of the top 2. Our 12 y/o grandson thought it was the best! But we all loved the tacos and enjoyed the homey, relaxed ambiance
Favorite Mexican in the city. The tacos are always a hit -- even the vegan options are a must try. The burritos are filling and hearty, with plenty of meat. Free house-made hot sauce is always a bonus, and theirs are particularly good (there is a more spicy habanero and more mild jalapeno). I've been coming to Gringo in Gastown since its open and I've had a good time every time I've gone (it's a lot)!
The half order of nachos were good for 2, the price is also good ($10)! Service was a bit slow, but they're always so busy and the ambiance is great (I've dined in before).
Great find. super friendly and outstanding service. The vibe was 80s fun with a menu that has good play on words. Tried two premium Tacos -Austin and the feature. Delish. And the Encino taco was my favourite. Shout out to Tess for the amazing service.
On a weekday, this place is packed noticeably with a line outside. Seating is also very tight. My friend said they were running late. Ok. Have a few a drink or two. Weird enough I listened. Nursing the surprisingly delicious lemon margarita as slow as humanly possible. Thirty minutes passed. (If this was a date, I would have walked. Surprising what we put up with for "friends"). The waiter comes by, "buddy you want to order some food". Just give me some time-I responded. Another text-still running late. Now 45 minutes. Screw it. I ordered three meat tacos. Beef/pork/chicken. Fyi, the Austin is no longer served with brisket but sirloin. Still good. No idea what brisket version would have tasted like. Probably better. At this point the staffs which are now hanging around 2 feet away are beginning to feel visibly sorry for me. Ha. I told myself i am going home downing my second margarita. Before I can take my last gulp, the friend showed. Sorry sorry sorry was repeated over and over. The staffs all breathed a sigh of relief. We ordered the nachos then more chicken tacos. Food, though prepped off-site, is very delicious. Another birthday dinner. Glad waited, the friend treated. Curious to try their new location.
Gringos served me vegetarian tacos because I was rather perplexed. The main restaurant did not have them on the menu when I arrived at the bar section, so I had to walk a few dozen feet across what the employees insisted were distinct parts of the same company in order to get my order. Unfortunately, I was unable to deliver the meal to the pub. Yes, I was bewildered. Having said that, the space could barely fit two or three persons. The Kung Fu tacos were probably my order. At only $3 Canadian, it was a steal. As a result, I was flexing USD for victory. Alright, tacos! Overall, I'd rate them a 5. However, it's a perfect 10 for the price.
Walking through the tourist area (Gas Light District), we found the Gringo Restaurant in a nearby alley. Honestly I don't know how to describe this place but the food was excellent some of the best we ate on our Vancouver vacation. The actually place is kind of goddy and small but it is a fun place with great service. My wife had the Austin bowl which was beef and I had a pork bowl. I also had a carbonated homemade lemonade which was $3.50 Canada dollar. Overall we were very happy with the Service, Price and Quality of our meals.
This is a really small taco/bar joint. I really liked the vibe here ... 80's and 90's fun! The tacos are really good!
OKAY if you are in search of GREAT late night food and drinks this is your spot! Such a cute lil gem in Gastown and I'd come again and again jf I lived in Vancouver! The location itself is in an alleyway among other restaurants but you won't miss it with all the neon lights. We got the Bahaha and Austin tacos which were fish and brisket and they were sooo yummy and had great flavor. Do yourself a favor and ask for hot sauce!! The lighter colored hot sauce is almost quite literally fire, it was made for these tacos. Drinks were amazing. I thought the drink menu was so fun and quirky with things like "white girl wasted" and "ok tequila" lol. The Thai buckets that they serve drinks in is my favorite!! Service was excellent and our girl was so friendly and beautifulllll
Gringo was a great find thanks Yelp. Wanted to find good Mexican and it did not disappoint. The Margarita was tasty. If you're thirsty stick with a beer. Von was our server and he did a great job explaining everything on the menu. We had the Wilber Bowl. Delisb pork and I had the Steak Burrito. big as described also had the Queso and chip. Should of went with nachos Last but not lease go find the restroom lol
What a vibe! I love it. I loved their spicy margaritas and beans tacos. Its a small restaurant but they have amazing food and music. Also its open late night which makes it super good. I would recommend everything except their tofu tacos.
Entrance is through Gas town alley - kinda sketchy at night. Ordered stadium nachos and three tacos per person. Nachos were average. Queso was meh. Three veggie options for tacos. Jerky jack - jack fruit. Kung fu - tofu. Beany baby - beans. Underwhelming for all three. Service was slow due to two staff managing a max of 10 tables. read more
Arrived in Vancouver on a Monday afternoon. After getting settled in our hotel and then taking a night walking tour of Gastown, we were looking for something to eat. Came across Gringo, a small establishment with a hip, fun, lively vibe. Good conversation, laughter and music filled the air. Service was quick. Place was clean. Server was attentive and professional. She was busy but could still provide good service with a smile. We ordered the beer chicken tacos as well as the shredded pork tacos. They ran out of the several other flavors we wanted to try, like the brisket and the second chicken. We tried three different salsas. Guacamole, Salsa, and their pineapple-mango salsa. Everything was amazing with the different flavors, textures and ingredients. Out of the three toppings, the pineapple-mango was the favorite. We left quite satisfied and happy. Decent non-authentic Mexican food with vegan options. Located in Vancouver's infamous Blood Alley, the location isn't the prettiest or most visible, but the interior is pleasant enough. I ordered one order of each of their vegan tacos (2 tacos per order), their kung fu ($7) and toots ($6.50), and my order was ready when I showed up. The kung fu's centrepiece is kung pao marinated tofu and comes with cabbage, cilantro, onion, vegan mayo, and lots of sesame seeds. Pleasant enough marinade on the tofu, but nothing all that special. 3.5/5 The toots was decent, coming with refried beans, jalapenos, slaw and onions. The refried beans were decent, but this was pretty bland and uninspired. OK. 3/5 Not the most interesting tacos, but if you're in the neighbourhood, it's a decent spot for affordable Mexican. read more
Gringo is in the West End! And in the former space of the Beet box. This place has a very neon theme with cheap drinks and good Mexicana. Today I had their lager and their pork and chicken taco. Amazing! Just wanted to give a shout out to Tasha and Jenny for the hospitality. This place seems bigger than the Gastown location. They have an 80's and 90's theme for their music in this bar. I'm going to have to come back for the burritos and the rest of the menu. read more

An amazing cute spot in Gastown, quite busy for a Wednesday night but we were able to find a spot for 2 people. I really liked the neon aesthetic of the restaurant. There's seating for about 20 people. Lots of vegetarian options, love that. Lots of drink options and customizable margaritas. Their kitchen is in the restaurant which is cool but also l gives me an impression of sitting in a large food truck. We got their vegan Kung fu (tofu) and Encino (chicken) tacos. They were pretty flavorful. And we also got chips and salsa to share, the salsa tasted very store bought so not a huge fan. For drinks I got a single margarita and made it spicy (which including a chili salt rim, jalapeño brine, and pickled jalapeño) Good experience of you're looking for a divey late night taco place with really good margs read more

The food was okay/good , the service was okay. It is a very tiny restaurant with little to no space to sit so just keep that in mind for larger groups, no reservations are taking, often times if you see a spot you should just go for it instead of waiting for the server. It was a kinda weird environment , watching the cooks cook everything made me wonder if it was very hygienic and following food safety protocol.. all in all. Food was okay, but we weren't TOO impressed. read more

Very casual and quick bite type of Mexican restaurant/bar. My Latino friend took me here and both of our sides were also Hispanic guests. I guess it's good enough to recognize they serve real tacos. But what I felt weird is our male server came to our counter and asked our name and offered shaking hands before eating. Too friendly? I felt just awkward and if you need a privacy, I don't recommend here. Very tight and close seating. Small restaurant too. Food and drink are delicious and cheap though. read more

The fact that the name is Gringo should have been a sign I should have less expectations of it being authentic- my fault. We came during the lunch rush and were thankfully seated promptly. Our group ordered a round of drinks and it's only right that I give them props for coming up w catchy names such as "crap or ok tequila" to describe their margaritas or my personal favorite "white girl wasted." Unfortunately despite the attention grabbing names I was unable to fully experience the ok tequila used in my margarita because I never tasted it. Request: please add more alcohol, at least in your margarita. I ordered a trio of their tacos- the Austin( brisket), Encino (chicken), and Wilbur (pork). Although initially small in size, I was surprised to find that it was a filling dish. The chicken and pork were dry and needed more seasoning. The Austin was a favorite- it was savory and flavor wasn't too overwhelming. One other request would be their $1 charge on their "load it up" options to maybe be more generous w them as that light drizzle of avocado cream on each of my tacos weren't cutting it. Someone should also school them on what a guacamole is as theirs only consisted of mashed up avocado. Overall I would skip this. If looking for a resto that will satiate your hunger for Mexican food. This is def not the place. B+ for effort though. read more
If you're looking for some good tacos and/or Mexican food, Gringos is your stop to venture. The place is located right in the Gastown district and is tucked away in an alley. You have to walk through the alley to get to the front entrance. If you go during primetime, be prepared to stand in line outside since the total number of people that can sit inside is around 28. In terms of quality of food, I thought it tasted pretty authentic even though they called the restaurant Gringo (foreigner) LOL. I've been to Mexico and California and the quality of the tacos are comparable. read more

Not seeing the 4.5-Star here. The place was busy but not overly crammed. Cool tiny location (30 seats-tops) just off an ally. Believe it or not...the place was out of tacos!! WTF? So I was cornered into ordering the Chicken Quesadilla. Good but super greasy! Was suppose to come with a side of salsa but the wait staff missed that part. The other was Street Dog. Ok but very sloppy. I wouldn't order this again. The wait staff was not good. Very slow & ineffective. For me...this is NOT. A do-over. read more

Skip the fancy Gastown restaurants and head straight to Gringo. It's one of the quirkiest and best dining experiences in Vancouver. Here's why it's other worldly: 1) Location: If being in one of Vancouver's coolest neighborhood's wasn't enough. It had to be in a hidden alley (Blood Alley) with a straight view of the Vancouver Lookout. It's picture perfect. 2) Food: $15 for 6 tacos and they give each taco a name. The fan favorites were the "Chuck" with ground beef, salsa, and green onion. It's your basic taco, but it's so tasty. The "Austin" is another favorite with brisket, fried onions, and slaw. The crunch of the fried onions is perfect and add avocado cream to make it even better. Note: All the tacos come in corn tortilla, but even if you don't prefer corn, these are amazing. 3) Drinks: There's nothing like cheap drinks. Their "poor man's sangria" has Fanta soda in it making it really, really good. Their margs are great and well worth paying $16 for a bucket of it. It literally comes in a sand bucket (without the sand, of course). 4) Service: The staff are friendly, quirky and look like they walked out of the movie Dumb and Dumber (not in intelligence, but in fashion sense). 5) Quirks: Everything just fits from the cartoons playing on the TV to the chairs painted bright colors to Mr T on the menus. It's quirky and cool at the same time. The only thing to note is that if you order one of the taco sides on the side, they charge you $3.00 v. the 50 cents. read more

Hands down, one of my favorite culinary experiences of Vancouver. I did a week trip here for a convention, and my "side project" was visiting some of the best local eateries and bars I could find. I'm pretty sure Gringo doesn't appear in those touristy guide books, but Yelp knows what's up. My friend and I walked over from the convention center and found seats along the side of this tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It's literally located down an alleyway. And I love that the street-facing wall is patio seating. Very open and airy. Even though we had to return to the convention center for more functions, it was margarita time! I had the Pink Flamingo, which has tequila, pink grapefruit, lager, and gummy worms. And why not make it a double? Soooo dangerously strong. Would highly recommend this drink, though the others on the menu sounded equally scrumptious. For food, customizing anything is always too stressful for me, so I went with the quesadilla, which comes atop a bowl of mexi rice, salsa, and sour cream. So tasty and filling! Plus, there's hot sauce galore here. What a great time with a lively vibe, good music, and warm customer service. This is definitely somewhere I'd recommend to all locals and visitors passing by Gastown. It's near the top of my list of places to visit again the next time I'm in Vancouver! read more
What a wacky day - extremely heavy rain & flooding all over the sidewalks & roads! Wet wet wet! Not nice walking around in my soaking sneakers! I've got a rain jacket & umbrella but the rain is just too nasty! Here I am at Gringo in Gastown - love Mexican food - actually to be honest if the food agrees with me I'll pretty much gobble it all up! A tough location to find if you're not familiar with Gastown so make sure to use the map finder on Yelp! Keep in mind Blood Alley Square - where Gringo is located, can be a little tricky to find. It's right in the middle of this square grid between Abbott St & Carrell St going North/South & Water St & Cordova St going East/West. Got help from friendly server & ordered 3 tacos for $8 bucks. I had the Chuck, Austin & Encino with Avocado sauce & Cheese add ons - the latter 2 tacos were my favourite. Of course I added hot sauce onto them for more kick! Funky, cool interior joint with cool music playing in the background - I could hang out here for awhile! It is a small restaurant so keep in mind if you're with a large group. So if you're in & around Gastown & looking for a quick bite of Mexican food - check out Gringo! read more

Call me low brow and maybe you'd be right but I just want to be happy and there is no way I'm not happy when I'm at Gringo Gastown. A favourite of mine for the past 5 years at least, I will recommend this little taco bar to anyone who is here for a good time. Mis amigos, if you're looking for authentic tacos or real deal Mexican cuisine, than you have stepped into the wrong place but you should still pull up a stool and stay awhile. Order yourself a Bourbarita because juicy watermelon and bourbon is refreshing and you only live once. Also, it comes with tasty tasty gummies and you have nothing to lose. Sip that bourbarita and soak it all in. Neon colours everywhere, people buzzing, warm hospitality, and easy breezy Mexican inspired fare - you could not ask for more on a summer night in Vancouver. Beer is less than $4 and I dare you to find cheaper beer at a cooler place on a regular Vancouver evening. Let's be real - if someone tried to tell me this was sewer beer I wouldn't put up a fight but what's a little sewer beer when you're having a good time. Cocktails are not cheap here with their double Signature cocktails ringing in at $10-$12 but they are so fun and you can compensate for that by taking advantage of their cheap food prices. $3 a taco and you can have your pick of ground beef, pork, brisket, chicken, fish, and veggie. Again, not authentic but made on a hot plate and in a world where you get what you pay for, this is a steal and a half. tadium Nachos ($8) are always a Must for us because dinner isn't complete unless I am eating it with chips smothered in warm processed cheese, sour cream, and jalapenos. Make sure you douse those chips in their medley of table side hot sauces because life is about experiences and you don't want to miss a thing. If you're not feeling tacos and nachos then not to worry because Gringo has your back with its offerings of burritos, rice bowls, salad bowls, chili, quesadillas, and their street dog. Oh, and did I mention everything here is cooked on a hot plate? This is art, man. Warm, buzzing, and stuffed with corn tortilla in the happiest of ways, would I return? Ha. You should just try and kick me out because Gringo's gets my vote for one of the best. Price/quality (4/4): Great food at an affordable price. It's definitely one of my favorite taco shops in Vancouver, even though it's not the most authentic. The food quality is very good and their spice wall is even more impressive, with one such sauce being based on the Carolina Reaper. Their drinks are quite nice too. Service (1/1): I was actually hesitating to give them a point here. Service is great once you get inside, but the line outside can get ridiculously long on certain nights--if you don't get there early, you have little chance of getting in within any kind of reasonable timeframe. This is especially true if you have a group. Would I come here again: Yes, but only if I can get in relatively quickly. read more
