It was my first time shopping at a MM location in-person. Walked up and had to ring a little doorbell before being let in by an employee. I already knew what I wanted but I guess I looked hesitant in the store because the employees encouraged me to try stuff on. Saul was extremely friendly, easygoing, and knowledgeable about MM products and brand history. He helped me try on a few tabi boot variations and advised me on how to properly care for the pair that I purchased so I am grateful to him. Not only am I the first person to review Maison Martin Margiela, I actually had to CREATE THE FUCKING LISTING. Oh, did I mention I don't live in NYC right now? That's right bitches, I'M WRITING THIS FROM 3,000 MILES AWAY! YOU'VE BEEN SHOWN UP BY A POLE SMOKER WHO LIVES IN HIPPIETOWN. WEAK. Now, some intrepid NYC yelpers are doing yeoman's work, but they can't do everything. Are the rest of you so coked out that you can't type? Or are you just too fucking cool for school to yelp? Do you care so little for your fellow man and woman that you're willing to let them suffer through season upon season of UGGs and Wal-Mart Ready-To-Wear? If so, a little charity wouldn't hurt. Let's go over the lineaments of the Margiela look, shall we? 1. It cost me a lot of money to look like I was just dining chez le trash bin at Carl's Junior. Got any spare change? 2. You thought the shoulder pads on Alexis Carrington were big? You ain't seen nothin' yet. 3. I like to make outfits out of found objects like matchbooks, Magnum Extra Large rubber wrappers, 2x4s, plastic bags from the Kwik-E-Mart, and used underwear. 4. Fuck you and your Chanel boucle suit, I know this is too big for me. It's fucking supposed to be a size 78 you twat. DOWN WITH THE FASCISM OF FIT! 5. Margiela tabi boots: terminally chic and podiatrically incorrect. Before y'all start hating, you should know I love Margiela. What can I say? It feels good to me. This place is my temple. In fact, I unroll my prayer rug every evening and face east. And yeah smart ass, I found Mugatu's Derelicte line beautiful. Margiela is bold, experimental, anarchistic, and shuns the spotlight (unlike media whores such as Kaiser Karl with his fluttering fan and stapled stomach). He is the father of "deconstruction" in fashion (not his words; he would never say something so fucking stupid). He is a designer's designer: other, lesser folk take his example and water it down for the masses (one example out of many: you know those True Religion "Super T" jeans favored by club queens and porn stars, the ones with the oversized stitching, buttons, and rivets? Well bitches, Margiela did it first - and better - in his "Doll" collection of S/S 99). Or maybe I should show you the chaise lounge blazer from last F/W? Or the leather jacket made out of leather for a butcher's apron (complete with meat hook) which conforms to my skeletal frame and folds completely flat at the end of the day? Or....you get the picture. It's not all gimmicky fun-and-games of course. Margiela makes perfect, streamlined suits (hand-picked collars and lapels, doctor's cuffs). His 'basics' (trompe l'oeil t-shirts, jeans, sweaters) are the only items out there worthy of the name: they can be worn everyday and last forever. Ask a truly fashionable friend whether they have any Margiela. Nine out of ten will say yes. And the tenth person is a lying bastard and shouldn't be your friend. The House of Margiela produces a number of different lines. These lines are classified according to rigorous algebraic formulae: Completely blank label (line 1) for women's RTW. Circled "10" for men's RTW Circled "11" for wallets, purses, bags, jewelry, and other accessories Circled "4" for women's basics Circled "14" for men's basics Circled "22" for shoes Circled "13" for books and other objects Circled "0" for hand-reconstructed garments for women Circled "0" and "10" for hand-reconstructed garments for men Circled "0"and "11" for hand-reconstructed accessories "6" for women's diffusion I think the best items are issued under the blank label, 10, the leather goods, and especially the "0" articles - those are masterpieces. The white lab coat wearing staff was extremely accommodating with my search, they even found a website that still had it. The store looked more like a photographers loft with the white walls with clippings posted on them, exposed pipes, and undressed mannequins everywhere. I did what I always do when I'm in a creative type of place; I crossed my arms, furrowed my brow, and began to look around. I found the shoe section and fell in love with a pair of high tops. I did not fall in love with the price though and decided not to get them. ::Fast Forward two weeks and the constant playing of "Run This Town'" on every radio station, lounge, club, and car that passes by:: I went back, bought the High Tops, and downloaded a new playlist. read more

MMM is one of my favorites and it's scary I'm two blocks away from the store. Every season has something for me, sadly because it's not cheep. If you go through my closets, about a third is MMM. The white label line is fab, but takes a little spirit to pull off. I've quite a few tabis and must say they're my absolute favorite. Yes they look like sleestak shoes but suits me perfectly. My son tells me they're obnoxious but I love each and every pair. Aaron and Elaine are great and the tall jap guy (never caught his name). Contrary to what one may be lead to believe by the price-point of Margiela and the attitude of some of his strict adherents, the store itself really is something to experience, even if one has no intention to purchase anything. I admit, I own a few of Margiela items. There was a time I could not afford to look, but look I did anyway. Not once have I received any attitude or pretentious vibe from the sales assistants; and that is what I love about Margiela. At first glance the image, the store, the location, provides for a formidable fortress only gained entrance by the fashion and monetary elite. Prepared to be surprised, because the sales assistants are--gasp--socially well adjusted! So, even if you never intend to buy anything, take a look. There are two separate entrances, one for the men's line and one for the women's line; both traversable from inside the store. The store itself is worked up into a installation piece playfully mocking itself by way of a keen sense of absurdity in a soft white bathroom/ballroom/vanity set/doctor's office motif complete with salespersons in lab coats. read more

Martin Margiela, a designer who is bottom line, the definition of avant garde The same person who handstitched a jacket, consisting entirely of ski gloves valuing at over $15,000. Martin, being one of my favorite fashion designers, is a person who's creativity not only reflects in fabricated form, but also environmentally, resulting into his New York boutique. The overall theme is better said as minimal. Walls completely white, the floors an unfinished wood, sections seperated via signs printed on computer paper. The overall look can be simply put as a run down photography studio accompanied by pleasant looking clientele specialists in lab coats adorning to its environmental vibe. Throughout the Margiela boutique, you can find lovely italian originated dress shirts, fine gauge wool and cashmere sweaters, leather knee boots, and a plethora of other gorgeous detailed garments and accessories. Its definitely worth a look around, even if you have no intentions of purchasing. read more

It is, hands down, the best spot to grab a drink or karaoke. the service is good, the scotch selection is fantastic and the atmosphere is a step out of flushing. this place is just too good for the neighborhood. Very few clothing stores I've been to offer a sense of ease and high-end comfortability but Maison Martin Margiela is among an elite group that personifies this. The store is very lowkey and needing a huge sign to get a point across, yet as soon as you go in you can tell they stand out on their own. I went there last week looking for another pair of Futures and as soon as I entered, I was first greeted with a polite hello from the sales associate and then with a lovely bombardment of air conditioning that was well enjoyed because of the hot summer day. He helped me out extensively and brought up the two pair I was interested in buying. I asked his opinion which one I should get and he suggested the Red Hi Top Futures since they were selling fast and that to get the other pair later is a better decision. He rang my purchase up and then gave me his card so I can call ahead of time to make sure that they're still in stock and if need be he can hold them a day or two for me. A highly recommended store for high end clothing and good customer service. read more
