I love Larder Bakery's naturally fermented sourdough batard which can be found at Tender Greens and Dune Coffee. They also make a different sourdough bread with a wetter dough that's available at Verve Coffee. As far as I know, none of these shops sell whole loaves though, instead the bread is incorporated into their different menu items. Larder breads have a real crust, are usually sliced thick, and have holes inside, and I love that their ingredients are stripped down to the basics and vegan (i.e. 30 year old starter made from grapes). This will not disappoint! If I'm in the mood for something a little heartier, I go for the tomato soup and half truffle grilled cheese. I LOVE this combo. The truffle flavor is spot on and not overpowering at all. Comfort food done right. Now for the best part... dessert (my personal weakness). The canelés are my obsession. I actually buy multiple little bags of the mini ones to have with my morning coffee. They remind me of the perfect cross between crème brûlée and French toast. Crispy outside, soft center, absolute perfection. The St. Honoré is a little pricier, but worth every penny and I usually order more than one. The cream is light with a subtle vanilla flavor and those little pastry puffs on top are pure magic. This is more of an elegant, delicate dessert rather than something rich and intense. And then... yesterday I tried a chocolate dessert for the first time and I wish I remembered the name because I have not stopped thinking about it. It was a chilled circular chocolate mousse covered in chocolate with hazelnut and it was honestly PERFECTION. I don't even know how to describe it properly. Rich, smooth, balanced... I had it with coffee and it was one of those desserts you immediately plan on ordering again before you've even finished it. This is more of a rich dessert! Beyond the food, the owner and staff are incredible. They are warm, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely make this place feel special. While baguettes made with levains yield a delicious sourdough flavor, but a baguette made with poolish produces a sweet, complex yet simple, nutty flavor. It's sooo good! My only wish is a more crusty outer layer, but nothing a toaster can't fix! I also picked up a kouign-amann and pecan cookie. Both were very yummy! You know what else is great? Most customers order 10 to 15 pieces each, and the grill can only make about 70 at one time. But the batter cooks pretty fast, I would say about two minutes for each side. They add a few toppings and it's in your hands hot and ready to eat before you know it! The texture is soft and fluffy like a soufflé. Made with buckwheat flour, each piece has a slight nuttiness and toastiness to it. The traditional maple syrup-infused butter and powdered syrup elevate the flavor profile. Additional toppings available (Nutella, whipped cream, strawberry slices, pumpkin butter, sprinkles, etc.) for additional charge. I also ordered a stroopwafel, which was tasty but not made to order. The waffle cookies were still crisp, and the caramel syrup inside was sweet. Would have been nice if it was warmed up!
