I haven't been here in a while, but I did find this place almost 10 years ago, and since then I've been pretty up and down about this place. Honestly, I don't know why I stopped coming here. There's plenty to choose from, and the price is good. That said, I would say Mainport definitely has its ups and downs. Tonight I had the #3 meal and mozzarella sticks. With the fries, I have always found that they were very bland on their own. If you do want to bring out the best in these, you need salt and pepper. Leave them on their own and you will regret it. As for the tenders, they're juicy, but they too could use some of that salt and pepper lovin'. Now for the mozzarella sticks, you actually do not need anything extra here. No sauce required! I ordered this dinner while recovery from an illness that required a trip to the doctor, and the taste of these mozzarella sticks still shined through and tasted good even with the taste of meds constantly alerting me of its presence in my mouth. So overall, the food's decent. It's glorified fast food, but as long as you're okay with that, you should be fine ordering from here. I will say its interior doesn't seem very appealing (or clean for that matter), but at least you do have a TV to keep you company as you wait for your food. Also, you are incentivized to use cash. Of course, I don't use cash unless there is no other option, but if it saves you money, then by all means bring cash. So yeah, I'll leave a 3 here. It's not bad, but nothing really wowed me either. I stopped going to this place because it was a hit or miss when I did but I yesterday someone had bought some chicken and it smelled amazing, so I thought I'd give it another try. Unfortunately, true to form today from my previous experience with them, today was a miss day. I bought the 3-piece chicken and fries, macaroni salad, my daughter went with the 2-piece whiting fish, rice and salad. Spent over $38. She said there were bones in the fish and said it was "okay". The macaroni salad was good, as were the fries. My chicken was dry and overdone tasted like it left over from the morning, I did see they had chicken wings sitting out. I went after 2pm. I only had one bite ended up throwing the rest away wouldn't even feed it to my cats. I will not return had enough of the back and forth. Rather spend my money on Crown Chicken on Boston Avenue next to White's Diner. Their chicken never disappoints! read more

Located within walking distance of the maritime aquarium, but (unlike other nearby restaurants) not exorbitantly overpriced to prey on tourists. The food was all made fresh to order. Fish and chips were, well, fish and chips. But more than met expectations for quality (breading was crunchy, light golden brown, not overly dark or overly saturated as is sometimes the case with fried fish; fish was moist and flaky); portion size (one "piece" of fish was a full fillet); and service (the gentleman at the counter was very friendly, attentive and generous with the sauces, lemon slices, etc. This seems to cater more to carry out (many orders picked up while we were there) with only a small dining area, but it was enough for us, and very clean, and we did but feel rushed. read more

Listen yo! I don't know what all these other reviewers are talking about. This is better than the Waffle House ...HANDS DOWN! The best thing about this place is probably the versatility of its menu and it's availability in the sense of open late hours. Who would be mad at that? With most food places close late, they are open to fulfill an appetite. Lot of the Menu is Rice over everything. Rice over chicken. Rice over fish. Rice over beef. Rice over shrimp. Rice over pork grinds. rice over doritos. if they have it, rice is under it. I thought the chicken was pretty damn good. Meat, fish, beef, not bad. Gourmet? I've ordered from this place a couple times when everything else was closed, I figured why not give it a try, I was hungry and was happy they were open late. Let me tell you this, I actually really, REALLY enjoyed the food. And they're prices are great. My first order was chicken wings and fries I believe, my second was the grilled chicken and rice salad combo with white sauce. Delicious. I devoured it. But here's why I'm giving 1 star.. I got extremely sick both separate times. (And for those wondering, by sick I mean, I almost couldn't even make it to my toilet.) I didn't want to blame them the first time, but the second time immediately after eating, wasn't another coincidence I thought. This place might be decent after drinking in the dark, but it certainly should be avoided in daylight when you can see your greasy food. The burger I had for lunch was a thin, beef frozen-then-fried patty, with what appeared to be Kraft American cheese, day-old iceberg lettuce and a cheap supermarket bun. There was some small signage regarding cash discounts, but instead I received a service upcharge when paying by Visa. How greasy is this place? Well, the name is misspelled on my credit card bill to read "NEW MAINPORT FISH N SCHIP". Hard to recommend this place. The fried chicken is the worst I've ever tasted in my entire life. It's dry, served at room temperature, decent size piece of chicken but it's all bone and batter/skin, little meat. Coated/deep fried with a chewy batter on it. Pretty disgusting. Last minute decision for some late night fried chicken to satisfy a craving. This place is open until 3 AM which isn't disappointing at all. The chicken was prepared fresh so I'm not sure what people are reviewing the cold chicken, the bag literally was heating up my lap as we drove home. The atmosphere was divey, booths and tables but were very clean. The thimble of mashed potatoes and gravy were sub par but everything else was right on track. Well season and perfectly fried chicken and a great value. 6 pieces of chicken and potatoes for $9.00. Beats out any of the big chains. I ordered a cheesesteak on Postmates for pickup. There was NO MAYONNAISE LISTED AS AN INGREDIENT on the website. I drove 20 minutes there and 20 minutes home and I get home and there's a ton of mayonnaise on my sandwich like I couldnt eat it it made me sick. Neither Postmates nor Mainport were willing to refund me my money. My only option was to drive back to get a new sandwich despite the mistake being theirs not mine. Customer satisfaction is clearly not an issue for them. I will never order from them or Postmates again. At first glance it doesn't look like a lot, but u can share with 2 and a 1/2 ppl and still get full. The guy there was chill and it was roughly $9. The chicken was on the smallish side (piece wise) but tasty and hot. I walked in and they made a fresh batch up even though they had some sitting there, which I was happy about. The fried chicken here is terrible. No choice of white or dark meat. You just choose how many pieces you want but for me it was all wings. They were old and definitely under the heat lamp too long. The mashed potatoes and gravy taste like they are from a can. Didn't try anything else so can't comment on the rest of the menu but I won't be back to find out. read more
