Initial Review 3/5 - Docs are great - professional, thorough, on time. The sales staff? I flat out told the guy I wanted the same glasses - classic Ray Ban Wayfarers in matte black - I already had and they made for me a couple years earlier. He said they no longer made them in matte black. So I asked for them in glossy. He spent another 20 minutes digging around and said they no longer made those either. Now, this set my spider sense off because Ray Ban not making classic Wayfarers is like McDonald's no longer serving hamburgers. So I politely say I'll look around and get back to them. I leave, spend two minutes on the Ray Ban website, and find the exact glasses I was asking for. I call the office back, get another sales rep, and tell him I was just in and wanted to order these glasses. He finds them instantly - same number that was on the glasses I showed the original rep. The new guy tells me I'll have to work with the original salesman - the guy who didn't really know what he was doing - and I'm kinda like "Do I have to?" He politely chuckles and assures me I'll hear back from the other guy within the day. Two days later and I never heard a peep. Get your eyes checked there but buy your glasses elsewhere. I practically spoon fed the guy a sale and couldn't even a call back. Disappointing. Updated Review 4/5 - I was contacted by Dr. Zelaya less than 24 hours after posting this review to make this situation right. I was given a quote for the order, clear communication, and assured that the consumer service issue would be addressed with the staff. Had to get more contacts and decided to come here cause it was so close. I like that they are open on the weekend! It is in the heart of downtown Culver City which is great! Staff wears masks, they clean between patients, and I was able to book my appt online in the middle of the night. Very handy. Staff and doctors are friendly, thorough, and nice. Excellent experience!! The doctor was very thorough, and explained verbally everything she was checking and doing with me throughout the appointment. It put me at ease and helped to understand why she was doing certain things. It was my first time getting contacts and someone there sat with me for 20+ mins, so patient and explaining everything in detail as I tried (and finally succeeded!) to put in and take out contacts for the first time. Have been coming here for several years now, and am continually impressed with them. Dr. Zelaya is extremely thorough and noticed a small situation with my eye that may have become a bigger concern had she not caught it when she did. Junior in the front office is SOOOO helpful! After ordering the same frames as my prior glasses, they just weren't fitting right, and he continued modifying them until they were just right, with an open ended offer to keep modifying if needed after wearing them for a few days. Liz was so helpful with picking out a new pair of classes. It was like working with a personal stylist! So I came here again to get my glasses fixed. I was lounging on my bed and rolled onto my frames. I left a voicemail on Friday evening to see if I can come in sometime to get them fixed. I received a text asking when is a good time to come in and I was able to schedule immediately. I came in a few days later and Tericka was able to fix them! I was out within 10 minutes! Review is for a basic eye This place is great for me because it very close to my work! It's probably great for others bc there are so many places to eat before or after your appointment. Everyone here was super pleasant and knowledgeable. Dr. Fahringer helped me out and what I really appreciated about her was that she was easy to talk to and during the series of "tests" she was explaining to me what she was inspecting. I haven't been to too many optometrists and not sure if it's general policy but being the curious person I am, I loved that part of it! Oh and also, you get to watch Jungle Book! So hilarious. This place is the best. I was referred by a friend who has gone here for many years. I wasn't blown away by the selection of frames, but Junior helped me find a frame I liked. I got an exam and new Rx from Dr. Zelaya, and they placed the order. When the glasses came back, there were some problems, but everyone at the office was so easy to work with to make adjustments. The whole staff are very responsive by text and phone. I even got a new exam just to make sure the Rx was right -- and it turned out the progressive transitions were not in the correct place due to how these frames sat on my face (apparently I have a low bridge, so I needed a frame that sat closer to my eyes.) There was also a manufacturer's defect in the frames, so be sure to inspect closely before you make your decision, especially if it's not a major brand that you recognize. They sent out the new order with expedited turnaround, so I had them within a week and they are PERFECT. The best glasses I have ever had. So comfortable, and the Rx is just right. Overall this was not the quickest or simplest experience to get glasses, and not without some hiccups, but I am thrilled with the outcome and would recommend this place to anyone. read more

I just did my eye exam here and it was such a lovely experience. I went to Main Street Optometry a few years ago and remembered having the same great experience - they only take VSP and the office I worked at switched their vision insurance provider to something else, and I had to go elsewhere. I don't think I've had such an extensive and thorough eye exam like I did at Main Street Optometry. Dr. Heidi Fahringer was super patient and explained everything to me. I felt really taken care of and was impressed that they still give the same level of care as they did years ago. I left my exam feeling confident about the health of my eyes. I highly recommend anyone to get their eye exams done at Main Street Optometry. Oh and you get to watch Jungle Book for a few minutes (yes, the cartoon) while the doctor examines your eyes - really glad they're still doing that. read more

Went there on Friday morning for an appointment at 10:30. Didn't take more than a minute until seen. The exam took almost 40 minutes if not more and was very extensive. One of the best exams ever. She even played the Jungle Book cartoon while she looked into the eyes. Don't remember what test that was for. The exam was $125. We didn't get any glasses there though. Couldn't find anything that fit the face. =) The glasses and sunglasses selection were kind of small. Parking is on the street. Metered parking if you can find it. And it's $1/hour. read more

Updating my review here based on my experience getting glasses. While the service is great and the contacts experience was great, I don't think the technical aspect of glasses were well done here, maybe it's the lab that they work with that isn't good. In the past I have gotten glasses for my prescription and the thickness of the lenses had never been an issue and they were always done right the first time. I wanted new frames so I came here to get glasses (my prescription and lens type stayed the same) and this was my first time getting glasses here. After two weeks they said the lab got the prescription wrong so I had to wait another two weeks for them to remake it. 4 weeks later I got my glasses and they were so thick and heavy they were unwearable, pretty much coke bottle glasses. I've had countless glasses made since 4th grade and this is the first time they couldn't even get the lenses right. Granted, they said that they have a free redo (a policy I've never heard of which I thought was nice before but now I suspect that's cuz they often don't get it right the first time) and said that *usually* they get it right the second try but if not I've to pay for the next one. So I'm like no. My current glasses were working fine and I wasn't down to go through this hell of a process and back and forth to get the right lenses so I said no thanks I'll get a refund. However, they said due to the process being started I still had to pay a $50 lab fee (really this lab sucks and don't seem to have much experience making lenses?!?) Hence all I got out of this glasses was having to pay $50, multiple back and forths and trips to the optometrist and no new glasses. Would I recommend? No. This is not a normal process I go through when getting glasses done. I've never experienced having to do lenses remakes and retries. I stay with my word that the staff is great and super helpful but the essential part, the glasses part was a no go for me. Overall read more

I was scheduled for a very important job interview on a Monday at 7am, and I was not counting on my frames to break a few days before. As a result, my anxiety went from a 7 to a 9 (with 10 being a nervous breakdown). Ordering new frames would take weeks, and I didn't have that time (I needed my glasses for the interview because I have stigmatism). Luckily, my friend lives in Culver City and guided me to Main Street Optometry where I had the best possible service. Mike is one of the kindest people I've ever met; he demonstrated genuine concern for my situation and acted quickly in finding frames that would best match my lenses. I wanted to go to an optometrist nearby, and after reading the Yelp reviews I decided to come here to get a regular eye exam along with a contact lens exam. Calling in to schedule an appointment was quick and easy. On the day I arrived, I filled out the forms and didn't have to wait long to be led into one of the rooms. Dr. Fahringer came in 5 minutes later. She was friendly and gave me a very thorough eye exam. The entire process took less than an hour. Overall, I had a good experience. My only complaint about Main Street Optometry is that they ordered the wrong pair of contact lenses, and I had to wait an extra week to get the correct ones. I wasn't in a rush to get my new lenses, but having to drive there, park, and walk inside just to find out that they didn't have my contact lenses was a waste of my time. This was a pretty convenient location. I parked in the public parking structure on Cardiff (free for 2 hours). As long as I still live in this area, I will probably go back to Main Street Optometry for my eye exams/contact lenses. But next time they call me to inform me that my order is in, I will have them confirm that they made the correct order before going there to pick it up. read more

I was a client here about 3 years before I gave up and switched to another provider. The eye docs are great, but every year I had issues with insurance billing mistakes by the office staff. I never knew what I owed and often they would tell me I owed additional payment when I went to pick up my order. Too much hassle for eye exams + lenses. read more

Right before Easter weekend and an upcoming interview, my friend broke the frames of her glasses. I was skeptical about trying a new optometrist but knew that my old one just wasn't convenient anymore. I was able to make a quick appointment , within like a week. I went in and was greeted right away. I was seen in a reasonable amount of time. I ended up getting glasses, prescription sunglasses and contacts. My main complaint is that I called two weeks after to inquire on my glasses, which were ready for pick up. But why didn't anyone call me to tell me? Also when getting my both glasses i had to ask about anti-scratch or polarizing (is that how you say it) them. The add on features weren't explained. But overall I would recommend if you are near by and don't have to worry about parking. read more

I called in to ask about their services and what is covered under my insurance to get a better understanding of what I would need to pay out of pocket. I wanted to support the doctor since I'm a fellow UCLA alum however one of the staff members had such a bad attitude it turned me off. I had come in earlier and talked to Amy who was really helpful. However, when I called in a gentleman with a bad attitude answered and was not helpful at all. He had a condescending tone and seemed annoyed by any questions I asked. Too bad for them, I am actually covered under 2 insurances and could have brought in a lot of money for their business but they lost me with the customer service. She also mentioned she has discussed the issue with her staff, and hopefully this will mean my experience won't be repeated. She then followed up with me several days after my visit, to ensure the new lenses were working well. Definitely ask for Dr. Fahringer when you come. I expect that's all I need to say in order to both answer the above rhetorical question and give you an adequate background story to my cause. In any case: I frantically searched yelp to find a nearby optometrist and - sure enough - Heidi verily lived up to her (5 review) reputation. Even though she was only there to do inventory (i.e. closed), she told us to come in after I told her what happened (:cD). Hell of such as nice. When we got there she fixed the frame in less than 5 minutes by hand and charged not a cent. So - quite honestly - I am in debt to the lady (and the business). I decided to start by giving her a good review. I've always preferred small optometrists over the corporate behemoths, and this office does not disappoint. I know it's old fashioned, but I saw the same eye doctor during my entire childhood, and I like the idea of being able to see the same doctor year after year at a smaller practice...especially when they're as great as the doctors at this practice. I've been to this office twice and had a great experience both times. The first time I saw Dr. Fahringer, the second time I saw Dr. Zelaya - they are both extremely thorough and have a great demeanor. My eyes aren't especially bad and I don't really have any big issues, but they still take the time to explain everything and make me feel comfortable. I've also bought glasses on both visits - last year I updated my everyday glasses and this year I decided it was time for some new sunglasses. Not only are the doctors great, but their office staff is AMAZING in helping pick out glasses from their fairly extensive selection. I am the most indecisive person ever, and it's super helpful to have a nice member of the staff deal with me as I spend an hour choosing between this pair and that. Their staff has a really great sense for what looks good and they'll tell you what they think. They also seem to have a really good grasp on the various types of insurance and make that process as painless as possible. I know that I can probably buy off-brand glasses for cheaper online, but I'd much (MUCH) rather spend a little bit more money and have Dr. Fahringer's amazing staff to help me through the process - not to mention support a wonderful local business. I should mention that the prices were still very reasonable, and there were a ton of really nice frames within my insurance coverage limit. Hopefully I'll be back for years to come. read more
