Here's the deal. I left Dr. Melzer's office like 5 years ago due to convenience. I had just moved to the SouthBay right before COVID. My good friend recommended her eye doctor who is local and since I trust her judgement I was all in going to a new eye doctor literally 5 to 10 minutes away from my new place. Unfortunately, though the doctor was great, I didn't get the care and attention I am used to at Dr. Melzer's office. I felt like I was at a chain store or Len's Crafters. Again, no shade on the other place, but it's just not my style. So back to the present, I just returned to Dr. Melzer's office this week and it felt like yesterday. Wonderful care, service, and knowledge. All my questions answered and I left with another cute pair of glasses! In regard to my commute, I don't mind it. It's not so bad. Awful Patient care Ive seen after years of loyal service as a patient . Dr Melzer was my optometrist for contacts glasses. when he moved locations I went to where he was. I also had better insurance as a working Nurse. the Last Few years have been difficult for me money tight and I was in shock when I called to ask for a sample or if I could buy a few. well the lady that answered the phone was trying to bulkshit here way with we dont get that many samples anymore and you havent been seen since ( May last year well folks ) I said please dont lie to me can you make me a appt and give me a pair well she started to gabble I heard Dr telling her what to say . While I think Dr Melzer is a decent doctor worthy of 3.5 stars, the combination of his fluctuating staff's emotions and the fact that he LOST my prescription is why I can't give him anything more than 2 stars. I went in for a normal visit to Dr Melzer based on a friend's raving review for him. It's true, his office has free parking out front and the insides are very nice and open. And the doctor himself is a very nice, sweet man, whom seems to be quite practiced in his work if not a little dated. He did the exam, dodging using any technology that I've seen at any of my past eye doctors, which at first I thought was pretty great. Looking back, I realize that maybe he wasn't able to correctly assess my vision because he was using the older ways of checking himself. At any rate, I left the place maybe 20 minutes later with a pair of contacts to try and a pretty adequate smile on the speediness of the appointment. The cheerful childish delights of my vision exam end there. About a week later I called in and said that the contacts didn't feel right and my vision seemed really blurry. He said it might be because my right eye was .25 stronger and that might help. Reluctantly (and I should emphasis that) he gave me new trial contacts for the upgraded amount and switched out all the boxes I had purchased (but not opened). When I arrived to pick-up the new contacts, the receptionist was quite snooty with me, and she seemed reluctant to even work with me even though the place was empty, but after the doctor was done with his other patient he came over to help me. And then the fun really began, they stared searching through drawers looking for a HAND-WRITTEN NOTE of my last visit. They had lost it and it took them 30 minutes to find a copy that they kept on file, and photo-copy. Let me make this clear, they do NOT file anything electronically at this office and they lose information in a swarm of papers and drawers. So minus the mix-ups, the bad diagnosis, the off-putting receptionist, and the fact that I had to return 3 times to get this corrected, it was losing my file that really put my review down to 2-stars. Would not recommend to a friend. read more

I don't like eye exams. I usually cry endlessly through the whole thing and need to take multiple "time outs" just to keep my eyes open. My visit with Dr. Melzer was painless. He gave me a through check up without a single tear and explained that my tears are exceptionally thin. He also recommended acuvue oasys for my very dry eyes and made me an extra receipt for my insurance company and the acuvue rebate program. He was also the first optometrist to explain the differences between different kinds of contact solutions... I wish someone had explained this to me years ago. I think he is a very good doctor. So I got a call from Dr. Melzer to apologize and explain what happened with my glasses. First, apparently the delay in getting the glasses really had nothing to do with them, it was the lab's fault (and it is the insurance lab, not their lab), so they couldn't do anything about it. And the frames I got were not discontinued, it was that particular color that was. I wanted to update to a 4.5 star because it is obvious that Dr. Melzer cares about his patients and wants them to be satisfied, and especially since I was mistaken about one thing and the other wasn't their fault. It still isn't quite a 5 star though because their selection of frames wasn't that large. But I would highly recommend going here. read more

We recently relocated from the East Coast and needed to find an optometrist. After doing considerable research, I went to see Dr. Melzer based on his education and experience. All the online comments were very positive, so I thought I was in good hands. I was not dissappointed. I have never had as thorough an eye exam in my life. Dr. Melzer explained everything he was doing and what the results were. I have very poor eyesight, and he was on the money with his diagnosis. I got new contacts and glasses. His staff knew their stuff when it came to frames and styling. And they couldn't have been nicer. Since my first visit, I have returned for a check up and have brought my college age son for his exam as well. Five stars is not enough. Dr. Melzer is the real deal. read more

I hit my eye Friday night and woke up to what looked like a lot of blood covering about half the white of the eye (completely freaked me out). None of my regular docs were open on Saturday, but yelp helped us find this office. They were so kind and squeezed me in just to make sure everything was okay. Dr. Melzer took his time and was very professional. The entire staff was friendly and made me feel so much less nervous while we waited. The office is beautiful, filled with bright colors, wonderful artwork (done by one of the talented staff members!), and a children's play area. I lost my glasses in our recent move, and needed replacements ASAP. When I called my insurance, Melzer was covered and so I thought why not. Turned out to be a great gamble. Dr. Melzer explains everything that he is doing which I find comforting. Though they do not have a great selection of frames, the were very willing to order the ones I wanted. Turned out we did find a good frame. To have transition lenses and anti reflection coating takes five business days. They called me today to pick them up, and the glassed are perfect. I was referred by a friend and consider myself very lucky to have found Dr. Melzer. Some background: I had radial keratotomy eye surgery 20 years ago, and a year ago my vision had declined again. So, two years ago, I had laser surgery on one eye, which was a somewhat risky proposition after radial keratotomy. This surgery actually made my vision a bit worse. Dr. Melzer was not involved with any of the surgeries, but he did fit me with a pair of hard contacts after the last surgery didn't go as hoped. Again, this is a difficult process. He was extremely patient and careful and definitely was interested in making sure everything was perfect. After laser surgery, there is a lot of trial and error in attempting to fit contact lenses. I went to several optometrists who wouldn't even try. After a number of appointments, however, Dr. Melzer got them to fit just right. Dr. Melzer was always on time. His prices are extremely reasonable. He's good with patients, and his staff are good people. If you go to him, you'll never need another optometrist again. This is my first review on Yelp. I've been meaning to write it for quite a while because I wanted to do something nice to pay Dr. Melzer back. A doctor like this deserves to have everyone know what great service he provides. I've had a great experience with Dr. Melzer's office. He and his staff are very pleasant and helpful. My eye exam was thorough and helpful. I was having some discomfort in one of my eyes and Dr. Melzer assured me it was most likely just sinus pressure and that a few days of Sudafed would clear everything up. He was dead on. He also recommended daily contacts, since I tend to only wear them on weekends. So far they have been a great fit and saved me money over monthlies. On top of all that, my contact order came in a few days behind schedule. I was leaving town the next day for vacation and a wedding. I have been going to Dr. Melzer for years for my yearly eye exam and glasses. I have also seen him for migraine of the eye and floaters. I trust this doctor with my life. He is experienced and really knowledgeable. He also charges me very little when my visit falls outside of my VSP coverage. My only gripes are their limited choice of frames and their location. I was out of contacts and needed new ones ASAP so I called and was scheduled for an appointment the next day. The office was very nicely decorated and roomy, and the staff were friendly. The exam was thorough but quick and Dr. Melzer asked me a lot of good questions about my experience with contacts/glasses. He even recommended a less expensive brand that would better suit my contact use, which I thought was very considerate. He suggested me to get a better (acuvue oasys) set of contacts which are more comfortable (less irritation) and i can wear them for longer time.
