After nearly 30 years "became a regular customer when Corrine owned it" I recently ordered delivery for myelf and a co-worker. The very first thing I was told was $20 minimum, ok. I then placed my order for delivery and was told you must have cash....I knew this from all the years of ordering there. I was told very busy, order will arrive in 30-45 minutes...also fine even though we are a business 5 minutes up the street. So, 45 minutes go by, 1 hour goes by I call to check and was told the driver tried to call...no he did not. Delivery finally came 1 1/2 hours later, 1 order was completely wrong, the delivery driver was very rude stating you work in a locked building...thats why you have my cell phone. I truly hate to say good bye after all of these years but its time to find a new chinese fav. read more

it has been a long time since I've eaten at Maine my favorite being their crispy chicken not really exciting but I love the flavor become my favorite over the past 20 or so years. Fast forward to December 2024. I was craving Main Kwong have been craving it for about three weeks now, but I hardly ever come to Charleston or have time to stop because of my job. I made the time to do it today I wish I had never done that. It was a major disappointment of epic proportion. Crispy chicken, the chicken was inconsistently prepared. Some bites tasted of uncooked flour and others were nice and crispy the way they're supposed to be and then somewhere in between soft crispy nor like the texture of the other ones. The chicken was cooked all the way through the sauce, tasted like it had twice the sugar dumped in it when they were making it. the rice was OK I mean what can you dorice? OK I can screw up rice that's why I eat it elsewhere. I asked for two eggroll I got one and it was the size of a taquito cut in half. The outside of my eggroll/taquito was fried dark brown. It tasted of old oil, but it was not dripping of oil. It was overcooked. Years ago when I used to stop I always saw counter Carina Today I was sadly disappointed. I wonder if she still runs the restaurant or owns it. Such a disappointment on a snowy blustery day that I hope to warm myself with that favorite from Maiin Kwong many years before. I will give it weeks and stop in again one day after the first of the year maybe things will get better by then. I definitely hope so. This was on a Wednesday and at 12 noon that place usually is packed with people getting their orders picked up. It makes me wonder why it was empty. That could be due to DoorDash Uber eats or any other delivery service and maybe the restaurant itself was out making deliveries thus keeping everybody in their nice toasty warm offices and homes and not out and about in this heavy wet snow. So I will wait at least two they have read this review and look at all processes and find out why the breakdown quality. Maybe this was a one off but in a restaurant business you can't off and not expect others to take notice. Two words: Crispy Chicken. It's fluffy battered chicken with a sticky sweet sauce that has a hint of heat to it. The lo mein is ok, good, but nothing to write home about. The veggie egg rolls are the standard cabbage filled ones and the rangoons are pretty large, savory, with lots of imitation crab meat. They run monthly specials (they have 6-7 different dishes to choose from) for $13 that comes with a whole tray of meat, a quart of rice or lo mein ($3 up-charge) and 2 Eggrolls. Service is quick. I think it's really funny that folks feel the need to make sure that YOU know that THEY know that Main Kwong is not the food you would eat if you visited Hong Kong or had a Chinese grandmother. OBVIOUSLY it is your normal take out Chinese restaurant; they are pretty consistent and mostly reliable. Not much in terms of protein in the chicken and shrimp with veggies, but the pork fried rice was tasty. A few tables inside, but I think they'd prefer you take it to go. Would I eat here again? When I lived on the East End of Charleston, this was my go to. I probably ate here at least once a week, if not more sometimes. The food is pretty average when it comes to Chinese food, but I haven't had one specific restaurant stick out to me as any better than the other, except for the China Buffet in Kanawha City. I believe it is family owned, like most Chinese restaurants, and you'll probably be greeted by teenagers at the cash register. Although based on some other reviews, this family may be gone. During my visit to WV I stopped here for takeout based on the positive reviews. I ordered a few egg rolls (total mistake), veggie lo menu, sesame chicken, chicken in garlic sauce, and general tso chicken. The egg rolls were filled with an overcooked cabbage. The chicken was pretty tasty. My mom raved about the lo mein. The pork fried rice that was served with the entree platters was sub par and limited in flavor. I suspect that the dishes here are really hit or miss. I will probably give this spot another try. read more

Have always loved the food at Main Kwong. It's been a staple for me for 10yrs. But over the last year they have changed their Egg Roll recipe and I am not a fan. If you're a local on the fence, or someone just passing thru and looking up a quick place to grub on a long road trip, please do yourself a favor and stop in here to get a) General Tso's Chicken and Pork Fried Rice b) Barbeque Boneless Spare Ribs (Orgasmic, honestly other Chinese place's ribs taste like dog-food in comparison) c) Steamed Potstickers (the sweet and salty sauce that comes with is awesome... it seems too thin to be Hoisin, and too sweet and spicy to be soy sauce) All 3 of these things together will easily feed 2-3 people, and costs under $20. Best American-ized Chinese joint in Charleston. Delivery is always fast and the food is always hot, not to mention excellent. We have been ordering from Main Kwong for years, and the staff is consistently friendly and will often throw in a free order of Crab Rangoon or Spring Rolls for us. All the times we've had delivery and they have never gotten our order wrong, and we're always surprised at how fast it arrives -- and we order a lot of food. Order anything. No, really, anything. Their menu is humongous and we have never been disappointed. And perhaps it's simply that I've grown up with it, but I've yet to find Crab Rangoon that beats their's. Am sad to say that this place is not what it used to be. The owner is no longer on site, and service and food quality has gone way down. American Chinese food. Our take-out order included General Tso's Tofu, Cashew Chicken, Lo Mein, and white rice. It was all good, fairly Americanized, but tasty nonetheless. The only other Chinese food I've had around the Charleston area was a buffet around South Hills, and I seem to remember preferring this. This doesn't compare to something like, say, Chinese food that you might find in a Chinatown in a large metropolitan city like New York or San Francisco or Los Angeles or Toronto (to say nothing of Chinese food in Hong Kong or China), but that's also an unfair comparison since, well, Charleston is not a large metropolitan city, nor does it have a Chinatown. So, yeah, good American Chinese food, nothing unexpected here, but competently done. The prices are pretty great, so that's a bonus. read more
