Chicken kabab and salad delicious every time
    Daniel M.

Love ordering take out or eating at this kabab house. The white and green sauce are always so tasty and the chicken is always cooked to perfection. Sometimes i get rice with my order depends on the mood. Consistent food quality!

Came here for a birthday and love the no frills down to earth vibe of bakhtar! The star is the food! Its so confusing figuring out which bakhtar is the original but I thought the serving size was great, we ordered huge sharing platters, family style and all the sauces were great. It's so nice to not feel greasy and bloated after eating. Staff was very kind. I wish they asked us what drinks we wanted and brought it from the fridge for us but no big deal. I heard the green tea wasn't turned on properly but we came early. Chai was great!

Service - Fast , I call in advance and for pickup Ambiance- Nothing Fancy but HUGE spot They have a Hall you can rent as well !!

Main Bakhtar is not accessible by subway, but is located right next to the Q44 in Flushing. The restaurant has plenty of seats and tables. It was empty when my friend and I visited. Most people order to go. They also do catering. Be sure to bring cash as it is cash only! I had the chicken qorma, and the lamb chops and chicken kebab plate. They come with rice and salad. The food was delicious, especially the lamb chops! The lamb chops are on the small side but they are nicely seasoned and grilled with some crispiness around the edges. The chicken kebab was also nicely grilled and not too dry. The chicken qorma was tender and there are lentils in the dish. The sauce is very tasty! I really enjoyed the slightly spicy and sour green sauce as well. The food was good but the service could be improved.

Bakhtar on Main street is a place where you can get some delicious mouth watering kebabs for a bargain. The place may not look much from outside or inside, but the food here is amazing! When I first walked in I asked if this was operated by the same owner as the one located in Fresh Meadows. I was told emphatically NO! The process for ordering is simple. After placing your order find a seat and they will bring the food to your table when it's ready. The fridge is well stocked with beverages and you serve yourself. Once your meal is done you reconcile the bill at the cashier and tell them what you had to drink, sort of an honor system when it comes to the drinks, but they know the entrees you ordered. Our entrees were lamb, chicken and beef tikka. We also had the chicken kofta. Wow! The kebabs were juicy and delicious. The rice was fragrant and the texture was perfect. The tikka kebabs had a light char and the kofta was seasoned well as the coriander, turmeric and cumin came through in the kebabs. Alas, did I forget to mention the Awesome white and green sauce! I love that the sauce is dispensed in large squeeze bottles, you my friend have the power to squeeze away! The staff here were very friendly and since it was our 1st time here gave us a rice pudding (Phirni) and green tea on the house. My expression has always been "If it's free, it's for me!" I love the cardamom in the pudding and in the green tea as it wakes up and elevates the flavor of the food. TIP - There are pitchers of water in the fridge with 4 ounce plastic cups. The water is free so you can elect not to buy any drinks. Oh yeah, CASH only and they also have an ATM machine inside . I really enjoyed my meal here and excited to know they have party trays available to order. The parking situation outside is pretty good so finding a free and metered spot should be a breeze. Great place and looking forward to return with friends and family since the menu has many more items I would love to try. Until we meet again, Cheers!

#1 Combination platter (Takeout): Beef kofta, lamb tikka, chicken tikka over rice. Comes with bread and side salad ($16.99)

I never dined here before, but some of my Yelp friends have gave this place good reviews. I decided to order takeout from here via Doordash a few weeks ago. I only got the #1 Combination platter and it comes with beef kofta, lamb tikka, chicken tikka over rice. There's also bread and side salad. The meal is definitely 2-3 servings for myself. The food was OK and the meats were a bit dry for me that day. The white and green sauces helped give the meats some more flavor. The rice was tasty and I should have gotten another side order rice to eat with the leftover meats. Overall, I would give this place another try for takeout and order something different.

Do not come here expecting a fancy sitdown, this looks a pretty causal place where you just order and eat so if you have a cheap date, this might be better than mcD. I had ordered the combination No. 1 for takeout which had 1 beef kofta, 1 lamb tikka and 1 chicken tikka w rice and salad, bread. While the meat is not as tender as some of the other Afghan restaurants I been to but for the price it's a very reasonable, tasty and the portions are great. Taste wise food is great 4 out of 5 Price and value 5 out of 5 Location is not near any subway so only way to get here is by bus or car.

I can't believe this is what they actually serve. Years ago this was filled with potato & flavor. This is pathetic.

Years ago, my husband and I would give so much of our money to this business. The food was flavorful and the quality was great. We would order from here numerous times for ourselves and our family. At one point they were the mecca of halal food and kebabs for restaurants. Sadly, we made the mistake of trying them again and was incredibly disappointed. In fact, this meal made me immediately filled with anger. The borani (pictured) was nothing but an empty shell. My husband and I wouldn't even allow our kids to eat this because it was nothing but fried pastry. The beef was hard, dry and flavorless so we ended up throwing it all away. The "lamb skewer" was one pathetic tiny piece of lamb. One tiny piece of lamb was 6 dollars. The rest of the meat was flavorless. I hate to write such a scathing review but this establishment should be ashamed of themselves for providing food like this. As a family who works hard for their money, it truly hurt me to spend so much money on such tasteless, cheaply made food. I dont know if the ownership has changed or this is yet another example of a restaurant becoming cheap and trying to exploit their customers. Stay away!!!! There are so many other halal kebab restaurants in Queens - spend your money elsewhere.

After receiving the order, I asked why the green sauce--commonly included as a side with this type of meal--was missing. The employee at the counter told me they had run out. However, I noticed that there was a bottle of the same green sauce on every table in the restaurant, which made the explanation confusing and frustrating. Another concern was that the restaurant refused to accept credit or debit card payments. In 2026, declining standard electronic payment methods creates unnecessary inconvenience for customers. Unfortunately, the food quality also did not meet expectations. The lamb chops were very small and appeared dry and overcooked. Overall, the portion sizes and quality did not justify the price. Based on this experience, I would recommend that customers consider other nearby options. In my experience, Shirazi Kebab offers larger portions in their family meals and the food quality has been noticeably better.

I came in to see if I could just get some kebab's for take out but ended up feeling more adventurous on this nice day. I got chicken tandoori. Each entree comes with white or brown basmati rice, salad, homemade bread, and a side of either okra stew, pea and potato stew, lamb stew, spinach stew or curry chicken stew. As a lamb fan, I choose lamb stew. My friend had a kabob combo of chicken and beef kabobs with a salad and homemade bread. I soooo wanted to love this place since the prices didn't seem to be too high. At 7.99/meal, it was a good deal until I saw the food in the takeout containers. Jamaicans and Dominicans in the area only charge like $5 for the same amount of food but give a lot more meat, sauce, and side (plaintains). In a standard 3 section takeout box, 2/3 was filled with just rice and my tandoori in a little portion in one. It was not that flavorful and a little dry. The rice was good but how hard is rice? I love the lemon in the salad though for its freshness and loud "crisp". But following the same train of thought, how hard is salad? My friend's food was a little better. His bread was laid under the kabobs so flavor drained into it. My bread was light and buttery though but I just liked his better. His kabobs were not on sticks so I don't know how there kabobs but that's what they called them. My biggest complaint has to be the quality of meat. The stew was well seasoned but the lamb in it was so fatty I felt like I was eating pork. After a while, I had to keep looking to see if I was eating a lamb or beef kabob because the texture was so off for either really. I wanted to like this food so much more since the service was so good and they were sooo friendly. Usually when my guy friend and I walk in to non-black restaurants the servers are a little taken back (he's a giant haitian boxer) but here they were very friendly and helpful in food info. and helping us order. Overall, I would probably try a few more spots in the area before settling on one but If I didn't want anything else I would get a kabob or two.

The food: Borani Banjan- This was the highlight app for me with some freshly made Afghai Naan. Man this was so good and a must order. The eggplant was cooked perfectly. Bamia- This was like a stewed Okra and I loved this dish, the okra was cooked down but the flavor was so damn good. Mantu- This was a nice delicate dumpling, it was made well but because of the cumin I couldn't help think it reminded me of Tex Mex food. Aushuk- This was OK, it was kinda strange because there was this fermented flavor to it that kinda bothered me. Chicken Afghani Kabab- I am shocked to say this but the chicken was my favorite protein. It was perfection, it was perfectly juicy with a nice smokey outer char, this was amazing. Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao- This was a braised lamb shank and was no teeth required tender. It so incredibly delicate and so delicious. Salmon- Fat slabs of salmon cooked to perfection with a nice outer smokey char. So good. Lamb Kabab- This was fine but not as exciting as the above. The lamb was chewier than I was hoping but the flavor was nice. Beef Kofta- It was like a ground meat patty. It was ok, it was a bit chewy and a bit dry but it was alright. The two I want to try on my next visit is the shrimp and the lamb chops, can't wait for a second visit.

Please do give this place a try if you're in the area and need to feed at least 3-4 mouths--the people there are so nice and the food is amazing--would give 30/10 stars if I could!

Omar greeted me warmly, remembered my order, and the food was excellent: flavorful kababs, tender meat, perfectly cooked rice, pita bread, salad, roasted tomatoes and onions, and white sauce (plus a free extra tub on request). He even gave me a 15% discount card for next time! Omar was so welcoming, and this location is closer to my home, so I'll definitely be coming back. Great service and quality--highly recommend!

My friend and I got the barg kabob with naan and the Sabzi palak (beef with spinach) that we got with rice. Both were good, but I enjoyed the texture of the meat and spinach dish more. The rice was flavorful. I overheard Rafi explaining to the other table and folks that got takeout that it would be an extra charge, but he could customize their orders, which I thought was nice that he was very transparent with them upfront and willing to work with the customer so that they could order the items that they want. I also appreciated him explaining to my friend that Turkish coffee comes with sugar and not milk and clarifying if she was OK with that before he made the coffee. We were given free firnee. Rafi was kind to check if we are allergic to dairy before offering it to us. Overall, the food was good. Service was fine and there was free parking in the back.

We already knew what we wanted for our entrées but decided to start with a few appetizers. Based on her recommendation, we tried the Mantoo (steamed chicken dumplings) and Kashk Badenjan (eggplant dish). Both were flavorful and enjoyed by everyone at the table. For our main course, we ordered the Mixed Grill Combination, which included lamb tikka, lamb kebab, jujeh, and chicken tikka. The portion was generous--perfect for sharing and even better for leftovers. It happened to be my aunts birthday and we were offered a traditional Afghan dessert, Firnee. It was a pudding topped with pistachios. It was creamy and sweet. Such a thoughtful gesture. By the way they also offer BYOB, which is a nice bonus. Overall, great food, friendly service, and an enjoyable dining experience.
