The meal came with basmati rice and a piece of bread as well a side salad. I'll be honest the bread wasn't really my focus, but the rice, chicken and sauce definitely were. Its so confusing figuring out which bakhtar is the original but I thought the serving size was great, we ordered huge sharing platters, family style and all the sauces were great. The food was delicious, especially the lamb chops! The lamb chops are on the small side but they are nicely seasoned and grilled with some crispiness around the edges. I'm no scientist but if you take the average of Turkish/Middle Eastern/Persian kebabs and divide by Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi kebabs, you'd get Afghan kebabs. Not as dry or mild in flavor as their neighbors to the West or as spicy as their neighbors to the East, I find Afghani kebab joints offer the most balanced and perfectly prepared kebabs, and Main Bakhtar are masterful in their contribution. You have several options of beef, chicken, or lamb skewers served over a bed of delicious long grain rice, a side of salad, some bread, and green and white sauces. The meats are succulent and juicy and packed with just enough flavor so they're not overpowering and your protein is the rightful star. I personally love the chicken tikka but am also a fan of their lamb chops and beef tikka as well; there are several combos to choose from so you can mix and match to your heart's desire. I like their rice and would recommend making it Qabili style by opting for the addition of carrots and raisins for a small upcharge, which will surely turn that like into love. The sauces on the side are perfect complements to the meats and the mildly spicy green sauce mixed with the pleasant white sauce is what dipping drams are made of. The "salad" is at best a garnish and consists of lettuce, a few slices or tomato, and perhaps 2-3 slices of cucumber. I wouldn't go to a salad joint and order a T-bone, so may be this isn't you should bookmark if you're a vegan and vegetarian because this is certainly a place meant for carnivores with very few non-meat dishes one of them being the bolani, which are large cheese and scallion stuffed flat dumplings that are flaky, crispy, and thankfully not overly greasy. The ferni dessert is also very delicious and a personal favorite but there are also several other house made dessert options on display from which you can choose from. I always call ahead and the food takes at least 20 minutes but it's always fresh and delicious! The staff are kind and friendly and I haven't had any issues over the course of my many visits. My biggest complaints are the lack of side dishes such as some Afghan style chickpeas, spinach, or okra, but considering how much food you get in each order and at such amazingly low prices, the value considering the portion sizes are perfect and an extra side dish would take you from being full and content to being disgustingly full and about to burst. Bakhtar on Main street is a place where you can get some delicious mouth watering kebabs for a bargain. The place may not look much from outside or inside, but the food here is amazing! When I first walked in I asked if this was operated by the same owner as the one located in Fresh Meadows. I was told emphatically NO! The process for ordering is simple. After placing your order find a seat and they will bring the food to your table when it's ready. The fridge is well stocked with beverages and you serve yourself. Once your meal is done you reconcile the bill at the cashier and tell them what you had to drink, sort of an honor system when it comes to the drinks, but they know the entrees you ordered. Our entrees were lamb, chicken and beef tikka. We also had the chicken kofta. Wow! The kebabs were juicy and delicious. The rice was fragrant and the texture was perfect. The tikka kebabs had a light char and the kofta was seasoned well as the coriander, turmeric and cumin came through in the kebabs. Alas, did I forget to mention the Awesome white and green sauce! I love that the sauce is dispensed in large squeeze bottles, you my friend have the power to squeeze away! The staff here were very friendly and since it was our 1st time here gave us a rice pudding (Phirni) and green tea on the house. My expression has always been "If it's free, it's for me!" I love the cardamom in the pudding and in the green tea as it wakes up and elevates the flavor of the food. TIP - There are pitchers of water in the fridge with 4 ounce plastic cups. The water is free so you can elect not to buy any drinks. Oh yeah, CASH only and they also have an ATM machine inside . I really enjoyed my meal here and excited to know they have party trays available to order. The parking situation outside is pretty good so finding a free and metered spot should be a breeze. I only got the #1 Combination platter and it comes with beef kofta, lamb tikka, chicken tikka over rice. There's also bread and side salad. The meal is definitely 2-3 servings for myself. The food was OK and the meats were a bit dry for me that day. The white and green sauces helped give the meats some more flavor. While the meat is not as tender as some of the other Afghan restaurants I been to but for the price it's a very reasonable, tasty and the portions are great. Years ago, my husband and I would give so much of our money to this business. The food was flavorful and the quality was great. We would order from here numerous times for ourselves and our family. At one point they were the mecca of halal food and kebabs for restaurants. Sadly, we made the mistake of trying them again and was incredibly disappointed. In fact, this meal made me immediately filled with anger. The borani (pictured) was nothing but an empty shell. My husband and I wouldn't even allow our kids to eat this because it was nothing but fried pastry.The beef was hard, dry and flavorless so we ended up throwing it all away. The "lamb skewer" was one pathetic tiny piece of lamb. One tiny piece of lamb was 6 dollars. The rest of the meat was flavorless. I hate to write such a scathing review but this establishment should be ashamed of themselves for providing food like this. As a family who works hard for their money, it truly hurt me to spend so much money on such tasteless, cheaply made food. I dont know if the ownership has changed or this is yet another example of a restaurant becoming cheap and trying to exploit their customers. Stay away!!!! This is our go to restaurant whenever we're craving some good afghan food, this place is on Main Street flushing. Their menu is pretty typical for an Afghan place, they have the usual chicken, lamb and beef with rice and some burgers as well. Sometimes the chicken comes out undercooked so I usually tell them to get it well done. Food wise this is 4 s Service wise, it's 0 Their servers are very unprofessional and lazy, they don't even have the courtesy to seat you and bring you menus. We recently went and the two servers were just sitting at the tables doing nothing, after I tried calling them to take our order, they sat around for another 10 mins before actually coming over, very inefficient! I've been here numerous times over the past 4yrs, I almost always get #5; 2 beef koftas, which is always juicy, with rice and pita bread. I believe its $8 or $9. The chicken kofta and the chicken tandoori is really good too, although I prefer kofta over tandoori since I think pure chicken meat is too dry (anywhere, not just here). I love the firni ( I might've spelled it wrong) too! Its sweet and just a great dessert. They always give salad 1st (lettuce, tomato, cucumber). The white sauce is heavenly ( so good that my friend wanted to take the bottle home, lol)! I also love the green chile sauce! The cheeseburger is good too although it tastes more like a kofta than an American burger. Its different but I love it just as much as its western counterpart. The service is always good. However, our table was lacking napkins and a pitcher yesterday. Although, the place was packed & I'm sure the servers just forgot to place those items on our table and we didn't want to bother them as they were already way too busy. This is probably the best halal restaurant I've been to. The chicken and lamb is so tender and the boolani is to die for. The compliment of flavors is supreme. And the rice is the best thing about the restaurant. The service is actually great here and the max time to wait is around 10 minutes but they give you a little salad for the wait. I usually get the lamb tikka and chicken tikka over rice and the boolani and I like it every time I've been here. I took about 10 friends here and with the exception of 2, they all liked it. The only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five stars is because of the sauce. We were having a family gathering so we ordered the largest rice platter for our party of 9. The meats were tender and juicy. Rice was fluffy and the carrots added to the flavors. There was plenty of food for all of us and we even had leftovers. Highly recommend! The only point is the way they packaged the order. The platter was in a large aluminum tray and they did not line the bottom with cardboard and it made transporting to the car extremely tricky without burning my hands. However, they served us the salad I tried the "white sauce" and it was ranch dressing. Bad ranch dressing. So I tried "the hot sauce" but it was ketchup. So disappointing. The only sauce that was authentic and edible was the spicy green sauce. The chicken was cooked pretty well, the lamb was extremely overcooked and dry, but the beef kofta was the best thing there. Unfortunately, there was no sauce. We asked them if they had "white sauce" and they said that's the white sauce on the table, and I said that's ranch dressing and they said "that is our white sauce". The rice was cooked well but without white sauce, it made the entire meal unenjoyable. I ate less than half of my platter and I took it to go, took it home, added some sour cream and made it better. This was my first visit here, I always go to the other Bakhtar on Fresh Meadow Lane. These two restaurants have bad blood, cause they started as partners, but split. So I wanted to try everything I usually get plus the dishes they don't have at my usual place. I got the family combo, with lamb chops, mantoo, bolani, baklava, firni, and 2 mango lassies. All for $64.50. The mantoo and bolani were both very good, the other place doesn't have these two dishes. Also, I like that they have huge portions here as well. I gotta say the food here is good but there are differences. The green sauce here is spicy unlike the one at the other place, and they don't put a ton of carrots and raisins on the rice.
