Terrible!! Used to love this place. Came in today cost 2adults and a child &42.67. The chicken strips were inedible. Supposed to have 3 and they put 4 tiney pieces in the basket. They had no chicken in them. Just breading and so hard they could not even be put in your mouth without causing cuts. Never will eat here again. What has happened to this place. My sister's family brought us here. My brother in law has been coming here since HS. Well, for starters, I think they overcharged us by around $9-10. I originally ordered a meal but then since I don't get a drink, I changed it to a sandwich and fries. I think he left the original meal on AND added a sandwich but never gave us the meal???? As for the food... it was ok. I mean, the loose meat "burger" wasn't overly flavorful. Both my sister and I said it needed more mustard. The fries reminded me of McDonald's. The fried mushrooms were ok. The kids seemed to enjoy their FREE ice cream included with their kid's meals. The decor is old. Guess it hasn't changed in like 35+ years. Maid-Rite restaurant chain is obviously doing something right since opening 97 years in Muscatine, Iowa. The mildly seasoned ground beef (loose beef) is generously piled on a steamed burger bun. I asked for mustard, pickles and onions - the burger had a great beefy flavor - delicious. It was a mass that I ordered a two piece chicken dinner which consisted of two chicken breasts, french fries, coleslaw, dinner roll with Land O Lakes butter. The fried chicken breast's were fried crispy golden brown, very tender and juicy. Absolutely delicious. If you're traveling through the Midwest, like we are, give this restaurant a try, friendly customer service. This restaurant is old, but functionable. My main concern is the food which I'll definitely a four-star. read more

When I asked about my order (a customer who came in after me had been served), they acted as though I was somehow at fault and became belligerent. After complaining about my inquiry, the order finally delivered was a mess. The meal was an early dinner on a Tuesday, so the place was almost empty. Typically eat here during lunch and have never had any issues in the past 24+ years. However we will never stop here after 5pm ever again!! Other than my husband and I there was one other couple and then a man off in the corner. Our order was incorrect and I had to return it and tell them twice at the counter what our order was, no sooner did I sit down and a young lady came and asked our order once again. The whole time they were remaking the order the F bomb was being thrown around by the two male employees. The elderly couple got up and left (didn't even finish their food). The you g lady working brought us our food and offered us ice cream (we denied it) she apologized and the whole time the two men were throwing g the F bomb out even louder. Sadly, this place has gone down hill over the years. Growing up in Rolla, this was the place to go after every baseball game. It was clean and the food was excellent. Unfortunately a lot has changed. We stopped on our way to Branson. First thing we noticed is it's not very clean. No one cleaning tables after people finished eating. And the window sill had a lot of bugs and crumbs on it. The food was not as good as I remember. The burgers were about the same, but much more meat than I remember. The burgers here are like a sloppy joe (crumbles meat) without the sauce. All and all, it's a bit messy and greasy. I love them, but they're not for everyone. The fries were the big disappointment. They used to be crispy and fresh. Now they taste like greasy cafeteria fries. All in all, this place has taken a big step backwards from where it used to be. It was sad. Rolla is a small town between St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri home to the best engineering university in the State. When they figured out the school had a higher % of engineers and scientists graduate than MIT, they changed the name from University of Missouri - Rolla to Missouri University of Science and Technology. Yes, the average starting salary for a grad from here, beats every ivy league school starting salary. Sorry Harvard and Yale, but sometimes flyover county beats you! You can tweet that , since Jack Dorsey went to school here for a while! Aside from the school, there's not a whole lot more in Rolla. A McDonald's, Wendy's....the typical obligatory fast food. My favorite is local joints. There are several in Rolla. I remember Maid-Rite when I went to school here decades ago. On Kingshighway, I remember locals backing their pickups in to watch traffic on the road on a Saturday night. Simple times...like American Graffiti. They serve crumbled burgers here....seasoned ground beef on a bun. Nothing exceptional, just simple sandwiches, fries, soda, malts and ice cream concretes in foam cups, fried chicken....theplace hasn't changed in decades...and that is uniquely comforting at times....not to have change. read more

We've tried Maid Rite and I have to be honest about this place. I thought the sandwiches are lacking flavor and variety. I had loose meat sandwiches in K C and they were delicious! Was not aware that we had these in Missouri and had not had a "loose meat" sandwich in quite a while. We were headed back from Springfield and decided we would give it a try. The basic sandwich with cheese struck me just like my past experiences as "unremarkable". Fries were good but not quite Freddies Crisp. The big winner was my wife's fired pork tenderloin which was excellent. The place was clean. The service was friendly. Order at the counter and get a number on your ticket and they call it out. Ok this is from what I remember started in Iowa. It's a loose meat sandwich like a sloppy joe with out the sauce. It is ground beef mixed with onions and the seasoning.. could there be cinnamon in it? If you order one get it w/ cheese the minced onions pickles and mustard. It's tasty but it needs a hit of something, the fries are fresh and tasty but a small order is small. The chocolate shakes are pretty good too. It's a small fairly clean place and service is pretty quick. The staff is pleasant we ordered broasted chicken for our dinner later it's pretty good too. Maid-Rite first opened in Iowa in 1926. It's famous for the Maid-Rite sandwich which, in my opinion, is a hybrid between a hamburger and a sloppy joe. It's a loose meat sandwich on a steamed bun with onions and pickles but no sauce. I stopped at the Rolla Maid-Rite on a Saturday afternoon in the middle of the summer. I had never had one and figured hey why not? I got the Cheese Rite, order of fries, and a soda. It was $6 and some change. It took about 10 minutes for the food to be ready. I was the only one who didn't already have my food. They had a fancy Pepsi machine but I saw the fountain on the side with "Maid-Rite Vanilla Cream Soda" and I had to opt for that. It was great! I did finally get my sandwich. The fries were crispy and perfectly cooked. I thought the sandwich was pretty good but not amazing. It didn't have a lot of seasoning or flavor. The cheese was a single slice of American Cheese. I would return if someone else wanted to go and I'm glad I got to try the Maid Rite Sandwich but I'm not going out of my way for this. If you grew up eating this, which I did not, I can see how you could have some nostalgia for it. read more

Maid-Rite is tradition. Period. I am a Rolla kid who grew up with Maid-Rite, and in my heart, nothing compares. It's not fancy, it's not healthy, and you eat with plastic utensils. However, you'll leave with a smile and burp onions for days. :) We had two Maid-Rites in Springfield, and neither one compared to the one in Rolla. I don't know what it is, but this is a mandatory stop for me when I go through town. Cheese-rite with mayo, onions, and mustard, and an order of fried mushrooms, take my little slip with the order number circled, and sit and wait. The mushrooms and onion rings are a bit of a wait because they are made to order, and you only get about six mushrooms an order, but they are worth it. The concretes are fantastic, and they will make absolutely any combination of toppings that you want (including taking a banana split and blending it up in a cup so you can eat it with a spoon. A plastic one). So, if you've never tried one, be ready for a delicious crumbly steamed burger...like a sloppy joe without sauce. Maid rite. More like made wrong. I can't put into words just how much this place is worth skipping. Have you not eaten in days? Skip it. Last place on earth for hot food? Skip it. You just lost a bet and have to eat here? Skip it. There is nothing good about this place. The "meat" is like the "meat" from Taco Bell before they make it all Mexican, and the onion rings taste like microwaved reheats of the ones Burger King threw out last night. The buns you can literally buy from the grocery store and age at home yourself, for a fraction of the price. And the ice cream is from a soft serve machine they bought off Craigslist from Eastern Europe. It does a mediocre job of turning that mix into something colder then when it started. And that's the best thing about the place. This greasy spoon leaves you with a greasy butt. It's dirty. Like the floor of a movie theatre dirty. But that's the table. Maid-Rite in Rolla is a local tradition. Some object to what some people call "loose-meat sandwiches." LOL! We just call it a Maid-Rite! I admit that there have been times when the beef was spicer or blander than others. It happens in a locally-owned restaurant. Laste time I ate at Maid-Rite, just before Thanksgiving, was great! Lots of beef, well seasoned, and my Cheeserite (I had one of both) was very good! By the way, the Friend Mushrooms and Onion Rings are always hot because they are only fried on order. Yay! I didn't hear the phrase "loose mean sandwich" until I traveled to Iowa, where there are dozens of "Maid-Rites." Each one if different. And I admit, Maid-Rite is love/hate, just like Pryor's Pizza and Alex's Pizza in Rolla. Same can be said for Cookin From Scratch. As a former/future KC resident, there are bbq places that some of us love, and others hate. Maid-Rite has been a part of Rolla for 65-70 years. It's not perfect, but it's Maid Rite! And many RHS and UMR, Missouri School of Mines, Missouri S&T Alums make a point to eat when back for Homecoming. And of course I'm biased, it's my favorite fast-food place in Rolla!
