From the ashes of Lars Cafe emerged a Vietnamese restaurant…read more The decor inside is nice, sharp, clean, impressive (a stark contrast to the previous business). However, the food quality has not changed. A Saturday evening saw 2 of us stroll inside, pick a table and select items from the menu. Vegetarian egg noodles which were uninspiring (half were left behind),and a shrimp with vermicelli. It was a bit of a shock to discover that the aforementioned shrimp were not shrimp, but rather a fried pink, spam-like strips with a slight crustacean flavor. When we paid we weren't even asked whether we enjoyed the meal. Very sad spot, hope there is improvement in the future - alternatively, it could be the curse of the locale.

We ate here one day for what we hoped would be a quick tasty work lunch. It was far from this. Upon…read morearrival we had to help ourselves to the menus. The waiter then took over 20 minutes to acknowledge we were there. When she finally took our order the first 4 things requested weren't available. Once ordered 1 meal took 1hr 15 to come out, followed 15 mins later for the second. Whilst waiting we witnessed 3 other tables go to the counter to ask where their meals were and became very angry with the waitress. 2 tables got up and walked out. If things weren't bad enough, the table next to us requested some complimentary spring rolls as they had waited 1.5 hrs and were told they would be charged for the spring rolls!!!! Food was mainly under cooked as chef was under the pump. All in all very disappointing, will never go again.

I was quite pleased when this place opened up, I don't know of any other Vietnamese places near by…read more Housed in what was formerly a fish and chippery the owners of Pho Nam have done a good job in converting the building to a restaurant. The exterior is vivid green in colour and the interior is welcoming, stylish and pleasant. I ordered the Beef Pho, which I usually do when eating vietnamese, which, at $10, was a real steal. Whilst, perhaps not as good as other Pho's in town it was pleasant enough and arrived with all the trimmings one would expect with a Pho. The remainder of the menu was quite limited, about 6 entrees which were very reasonably priced, and about five other mains, which, whilst more expensive than the Pho were a bit more on the fancy side, but still quite cheap, between 15 and 25 dollars. Pho Nam also offers a degustation menu at $40 a head for those who want to step it up a little. The degustation features European style dishes, which seems a little out of place in a Vietnamese restaurant, but apparently they are the specialties of the chef. Bookings for the degustation require notice 48 hours in advance.

Referring to one of the previous reviewers: The signage has…read morebecome even worse recently; the illuminated sign outside the restaurant is gone now. So if you don't know where to look, it's VERY hard to find the place! But perhaps that is intended: Even though the staff was extremely friendly, helpful and nice throughout the evening, the actual owner of this place makes quite clear that he is not keen on having customers in his place... odd, that! Last time I was in there, we were celebrating the 60th birthday of one of the owner's casual staff members. Quite an occasion, one might think... But not only were we charged a ridiculous price of AU$ 25 each for one starter and one main course (without drinks!!!) - at 8.00 / 8.15pm the owner started to remind us to leave since he wanted to close on time at 8.30pm. That's not exactly what I call "customer-friendly" or "good management". Unfortunately, the quality of the food did not quite make up for this rude behaviour... it was OK, but not exactly "extraordinary". We've specifically ordered our food "authentic" and "hot" - and what we got was Vietnamese average taste, medium spiced. Very disappointing! To cut a long story short: After having been to this place twice now (July 1012 and October 2013), I have to say that there are plenty of nicer places and better food around town. Why bother driving all the way to Kensington Park...?!

Food is excellent and service prompt and attentive…read more Television on in the restaurant though? Terrible to have to listen to daytime tv and the news. Not a nice vibe. Get takeaway but I suggest not eating in.

Café Saba is a new addition to the Norwood area and let me tell you: I was excited to hear there…read morewould be BANH MI in my immediate vicinity. If you don't know what I'm talking about, for shame! Act like you know and then read this to get up to speed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bánh_mì In short, it's a Vietnamese sandwich that is all kinds of addictive and delicious - not to mention also pretty healthy. I've been getting my banh mi fix from Zen House, the Central Markets, Hanson Road or Southern Cross food arcade, so I was stoked to hear there would be somewhere a little more local to get my hands on the goods. The verdict? It was good: fresh and tasty with just the right amount of chili. Yet, I won't be going back to Saba for my banh mi fix anytime soon, and here's why: at $7.50 for a combination roll, I paid almost double what I pay elsewhere for the same quality of product. A bottle of sparkling water also set me back $3.80. Service was also disappointing. Despite being the only customer in the café, the rolls took a really long time to arrive. When I went to pay on EFTPOS, the staff member told me he didn't know how to operate the machine, so I needed to wait another 10 minutes for another staff member to return. I wouldn't normally be so pedantic but I was in a bit of rush that day so was really aware of how long it was taking. Hopefully this was a just a first week road bump and will improve as they go along. While I have only tried the banh mi so far, the rest of the menu is a haphazard combination of Asian and café food, with a sandwich bar, coffee machine, cakes, curries and roasts on offer as well as Vietnamese dishes. Personally I think the all-things-to-all-people approach is generally not as successful as doing one thing really well. The location in a plaza at 47 The Parade is a little hidden, you probably wouldn't find the place unless you knew to go there. The plaza itself is very pleasant though, green and airy with lots of seating.
