When I found out Adelaide Pho was on Waymouth St I was a little confused. I couldn't quite imagine a little pho shop sitting pretty amongst the likes of Press, George's, Bistro Dom, and the Gallery. But the restaurant is actually a little bit further West - just a little bit past light square. I arrived at about 10:40, 20 minutes before opening time (I didn't know the opening hours before showing up). When I popped back over at 11 they were all ready to go. Parts of the menu looked pretty familiar, and part of that could be because the two owners of Adelaide Pho actually used to be part owners of Thanh Thanh on Field Street. So most plenty of favourites can be found on the menu here (Including the custard apple smoothie). After being a little disappointed with my smoothie and my pho last time I was at Thanh Thanh, I was pretty excited when my custard apple was just as creamy and delicious as the one I first fell in love with. The pho was also great - with lots of flavour. It's the perfect cold weather pick-me-up. The staff were all really friendly, and helpful. I've already got my list of dishes I'm going back to try. They also have a pretty big wine list available.

I'm thinking most of the taste came from the msg the waiter admitted was in the food. The seafood pho was not to my liking with the frozen packet seafood bland and rubbery to chew. The chicken salad was doused in sweet chilli sauce. Overall dinner lacked the freshness I would expect of Vietnamese food. Sorry I know this is popular to some, but I won't be going back here again in a hurry.

So, here we go. I have a massive love for Pho. It is a meal that I could quite easily consume at least once a day without getting board of it. I am not sure what it is, I think I just really love the broth. Actually, here is a little secret! Pho is the best hangover cure that I know. Most people crave greasy food, cheese, or whatever. But the broth has amazing healing powers. Back to my review. I am super fussy when it comes to broth. I am often adding extra fish sauce or just not satisfied with the spice flavour background. However, Adelaide Pho have one of the best broths in Adelaide. I can not pick fault with it. Depending on the day it will be a little stronger than other days. But I love it strong! It is served with the usual accompanies; thai basil, coriander, bean shoots and crazy hot birds eye chilli. Beware the chilli! Not for the faint hearted! But, what I love is that the herbs are always fresh. Other places sometime give you some wilted old herbs. This place it is good quality. Service here is great, they seat and serve you really quickly no matter how busy it is. I have not really tried any other items on the menu, because I am a Pho fiend and cannot seem to get past the word on the menu. Other dishes always look great through and portion sized well. Give the iced lemon tea a go, it is very cheap and goes well with Pho.

Amazing pork ball rice paper cold rolls.

As a Melburnian, it's a compliment to say that this place would slot in perfectly to the Victoria Rd Richmond string of Vietnamese chneap'n'cheerful places. Inside is nothing much to look at, but the food comes out fast, the pho was excellent, and the pork meatball cold rolls were a welcome oddity to my tastebuds. Corkage is a little pricey, but I'm told that's normal for Adelaide (they haven't quite embraced the free/super-cheap corkage like most Vietnamese places in Melbourne have.) Overall, cost us $15 a head *with corkage*, which is amazing for a delicious night's eating.

One of the better pho place in town, just a short walk away from Chinatown. Parking could be an issue but hey, it is in the city. Love the many variety of dishes available here, my fave is the combination chicken noodle soup and the combination broken rice. Really fast service, you might have to wait a bit for a table if it is a busy night but hey, good foods deserve a bit of patient sometimes :)

The coffee is a bit too sweet. Maybe that is why they give you the ice cup. Not too much coffee taste.

The broth was full of flavour and the beef slices were tender and sublime (I had the slices and tripe).

It is a bit hard to find (right next door to the Visitor Info Centre, opp. Spendless Shoes) but…read morelook out for the orange-ness, and lines and you're in the right place! This place is packed (as in a large line) from 11.45am to about 12.30pm - for good reason! I only come for the noodle salad (with a choice of three meats: pork belly, honey chicken and grilled chicken, but I'm told the banh mi is awesome! Cold rolls are also on the menu. Despite the large lineup they churn through the customers with great efficiency, exactly what's needed when you're on a limited time lunch break.

It's fairly common to see a line out the door when you get close to MM on James Place, busy as is the majority of food businesses down JP. But don't fear! The turnover is high yes, but the wait is not long and the quality of food/service doesn't suffer for it. A pretty standard fare for a vietnamese banh mi joint, i always go for either roast pork or lemongrass chicken but they also have honey chicken or tofu. When i first started going here i baulked at their interpretation of 'extra hot chilli', but it seems they've upped their game and you can now get a decent heat kick if you so desire (and i do always desire it hot hot hot!) Plenty of tasty options for all at a great price and reasonably quick to serve...what more could one ask for?! Get on it!

Banh mi and service review only:…read more A combination of factors has set me in a slightly off mood today (Mondayitis!), so I'm trying to be generous. Little Hanoi (LH) and I have a past. A few months ago it was recommended as a great place to go for a cheeky banh mi, no fuss but worth a look. So I did. And the first one was actually pretty good from memory. But the 2nd, 3rd and now 4th time I've given LH a go I've been a bit disappointed. I actually walked right past LH on my way to Bread Temptations in Topham Mall because I'd heard good things, but, contrary to the advice on Yelp (!) Bread Temptations do not accept credit cards :-/ So I wandered back...also back past Soonta...which I think will be my next Banh Mi port of call. LH is OK, but what you get for the price charged, there are better Banh Mi being made in the CBD. Service: Is usually OK. Not that it takes forever to whip up a Banh Mi, so it's fairly quick. Banh mi: There are plenty of other options at LH besides banh mi, so maybe if you were to give LH a go, perhaps get a pho or something else. The banh mis are average at best. The rolls were soft. Not that this is always a bad thing, but I do prefer a nice crumbly, crunchy roll. Seems to carry the rest of the textures well. The meat was cold (again, not always a bad thing but I much prefer a bit of warmth) and there wasn't much packed in there at all. Slightly crunchy pork, but more fatty than crunchy, and the chicken was just...meh. Salad portion was all carrot, virtually no cucumber. The use of the sriracha sauce is one of the only redeeming factors. This roll is on par with the Daily Choice roll I had last week. But a dollar more. I, therefore, must continue my trek to find my new regular banh mi joint in the CBD. Update to come if I go back and get the pho!

I should preface this review by saying that it's based on both their rolls and salads. If I was…read morejust reviewing their salads it may be higher. I first went here when searching for an alternative to Bahn Mi. I got a roll and was underwhelmed. The roll itself was dry and the pork was quite fatty, the carrot and cucumber were somewhat scarce. The use of Sriracha sauce instead of fresh chilli was also a disappointment. I gave them the benefit of the doubt hoping that things would improve, to no avail. After not going here for a while I walked by a couple of months ago and was pleasantly surprised to see the quality of pork had improved. I gave them another go and got a salad this time. What an improvement. The lettuce, cucumber and carrot were so fresh, the pork was great and the addition of coriander and crushed peanuts were great. This standard is now consistently maintained. I am now a regular visitor and recommend their salads to my colleagues who are also impressed.
