We decided to give this place a shot since it's closer to home and, hey, all the glowing reviews made it sound like we'd be in good hands. Spoiler alert: not the case. First off, my wife confirmed they accepted her insurance. Great, right? Except surprise! she later finds out she's being billed for a full exam. Thought it was just her co-pay, nope. Guess that's on her for trusting what they said. Red flag #1. Then came the 40-minute wait after her scheduled time. She finally gets called in, except it's not even Dr. Mai Tang. Instead, some mystery doctor strolls in like a substitute teacher no one asked for. We specifically booked with Mai Tang. Red flag #2. The "exam" itself? A joke. They insisted her eye looked "infected" (mind you, she had just woken up and she mentioned this) and refused to give her a prescription unless she coughed up even more cash for an extra procedure to make sure her eye wasn't infected. Because nothing says "great healthcare" like holding your prescription hostage. Red flag #3. So yeah, glad others had a great experience, but for us? Hard pass. If you like surprise charges, long waits, bait-and-switch doctors, and pressure tactics, this is your spot. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, there are plenty of offices that actually care about their patients and don't treat them like walking dollar signs. read more

I found Dr. Tang about 6 months ago because we decided to get my son Ortho-K to stop his eyesight from getting worse. She was one of the certified Dr.s in our area with good reviews on yelp so we went to her. What a great choice because she is patient, kind, accommodating, and cares about her patients. We went 10+ visits to get perfect lens but through it all she was wonderful to work with. Now, my entire family will start going to Dr. Tang for all vision needs. Her prescriptions are limited to a specific brand, which was not explained at the time of the exam. She will not approve a generic/econo brand based on a written request alone. And you will also not be able get an apmt to come in for a refitting for a generic brand. Her employees are far friendlier than the doctor herself. read more

Dr. Tang has been my go to optometrist for many years. Extremely comprehensive and detail oriented. Always concerned regarding the patients needs and issues. Will identify potential issues with your eyes and give her recommendations as to the next course of action. Originally wasn't even planning on getting glasses here and was just going in for a prescription to order online, but the staff was really kind and helpful, so I ended up with a new pair. $47 for ray ban frames and including lenses, pretty happy with that! read more

My main objective was to locate the nearest Target Optical because I have Eye Med insurance and they had this stellar coupon for $0 down on lenses, however when I tried searching for Target Optical on Yelp the Target on Malvern did not show up. IT was only after receiving an e-mail from my recent visit that I discovered Target Optical inside the Malvern location is actually listed as Mai Tang, OD. That's my only gripe about this, but it wasn't enough to warrant a less than a five star review. Let's start at the beginning. This office is located inside Target in Fullerton on Malvern on the southwest corner of the store. I tried doing a walk up appointment and although they do accept walk ups the optometrist wasn't in that day. Mary (tall with red hair) was really nice and totally cool with me being a walk up and asked if I'd like to schedule an appointment for a later time. I declined as I didn't know when I'd be in that part of town again and she was super nice about it and apologized about the optometrist not being there that day. I made an appointment online for the following Thursday during my lunch hour and had no issues. My optometrist was Dr. Tricia Kawaguchi. She was really awesome as I explained to her it's been a while since my last optometrist visit (5 or 6 years ago) and she made me feel comfortable enough to ask questions about my vision tests and what the machines did, etc. Tricia introduced herself and explained what everything does, what she's looking for as far as warning signs for diabetes or glaucoma and even pointed out that I have this sheen around my macular that most people lose around their 20's which made me ecstatic that I had some youth left in me (I'm 30 plus years old). I discovered some crazy things about my vision and she showed me the difference between glasses vs no glasses and gave me free eye drops for my red eyes and explained why they're red. I walked out of there for a greater appreciation for my vision and motivation to take care of my eyeballs. Tricia was considerate of my time and asked if I was on my lunch hour and said she could give me my prescription and I could come back at a later time to pick out frames and get fitted. I came in the next day on my lunch hour again and worked with Mary and Cristine in pricing for my glasses using my insurance. I've never worn glasses before and I was having a hard time picking a pair of glasses that fit me and both Cristine and Mary were so cool and helped me pick a pair of frames that suit me. I ended up getting glasses and a pair of sunglasses for the road and again, I left feeling motivated to take care of my eyes and felt excited about wearing glasses. Those two are really fun and I felt like I was at my own personal glasses fitting party. I'd definitely recommend stopping in as the staff here are all top notch. read more

I went in for a yearly checkup a while ago, and unfortunately my work's insurance doesn't cover Target Optical, but I wish it did because Dr Tang is the most trustworthy & professional optometrist I've ever met. I really felt she cared a lot for my eyesight, and even though other doctors had just ignored when they couldn't find why no prescription gave me perfect vision, she spent extra time on me to figure it out. The other optometrists I've seen were more concerned with getting me out within an hour, and didn't seem to care that something was off. Dr Tang spent about 15-30 min extra with me, asking me questions & working with me to figure out what was going on. She was the first doctor to tell me I had minor astigmatism & verified it with a test. I'd seen another doctor for years and he never bothered go inform about this. My eyes were difficult too, because I also had trouble focusing my eyes from strain - I didn't know that was also contributing to it until I asked her about it and she explained the reason... something other optometrists usually patronized or just never took the time to answer and address my concerns even though this is part of the job! On the contrary, she took the time to educate me on my situation & how to deal with it: I had dry eyes bc I don't blink as often when looking at screens, so I should keep some drops with me. Also, I had slight astigmatism, but not enough to get a contact prescription for it... she went above and beyond by sitting with me and giving me a few lenses to try. She sent me home with a different brand and told me to follow up with her about how this affected my dry eyes and astigmatism. Honestly, no doctor I'd seen had ever spent this much time and energy finding all the problems and helping me with them - this shows how dedicated she is in your eye health and comfort. I always appreciate when doctors don't just prescribe without informing and educating their patient on their condition... it makes taking care of your own condition so much easier when you know what's going on! Usually other doctors are so preoccupied with getting you in and out as soon as possible that you don't know why and what is happening to your body, you just have to do what they tell you to do, so I noticed and appreciated her taking the time to answer all my questions & address every concern. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover Target but if it ever does, I'm going straight back to her even if it is a heck of a drive for me! read more

Excellent service, i didn't have an appointment but needed to get this done so the doc accommodated me . The best part was my eye exam , she was able to do it without dilating my eyes and even provided me with a picture of both my eyes to take to my diabetes doc. I've gone in to see Dr. Tang for over six years now, and she's great! Very professional, the examinations are always very thorough without taking too long, and she genuinely cares about all her patients. My annual check-ups (examination, and picking out and purchasing new lenses and frames) never take more than two hours and you aren't pressured into buying anything you don't want. Overall I always have a very good experience with Dr. Tang and the Target Optical staff and will continue going here for years to come! read more

I've been coming here to get my annual eye exam for 9 years, and continue to trust this place and Dr. Tang! I had an irritation on one of my eye back in 2004 and went to Dr Tang to have her look at it. First I thought an eyelash was stuck made it irritated/infected. So I had an MD resident look at it and he said it was fine. Knowing that the MD resident was a RESIDENT, I decided to get a second opinion and ask someone who specialized in eyes. Since I was going to Dr Tang for my annual eye exam, I asked if she can look at my irritated eye. She assessed/examed me and was very thorough with her work. She noted that I had a scratch on my eye and told me to see my opthalmologist for further check up and before it got worse, since she didnt have the tools/instruments to do so. Turns out that I had a corneal ulcer and if I hadnt got it treated, i would have lost my eye! Long story short, a particle got caught in my contact lens, with that it scratched my eye. Bacteria got through my corneal through that open barrier (the scratch) and later that bacteria site made my eye looked like a cat eye. Scary. It was a white blob in a cat eye shaped, covering my pupil. Dr Tang is very knowledgeable, professional, and thorough with her work. Personality wise, she is kind and more on the quiet side, but it's because she's focus. And she'll answer any questions you have and she doesn't rush you. If it were not for her, I may be partially blind. I am still seeing her today for my annual vision and eye check up. Also, you are not pressure to buy any glasses or contacts. Occasionally they do have deals. I got lucky and got a RayBan on clearance with prescriptive lens for $69! For contacts exams, she gives you a sample to try out. I just take my prescription form to costco for a better deal on contacts. Dr Tang takes insurance and/or payments in cash/credit card. Dr Tang is independent, so that's why you dont get pressured for glasses/contacts. :) Shes very professional and knowledgable. Ill continue to trust Dr Tang. :) read more

This is the third year in a row that I have gone to see Dr. Tang for my yearly eye exam. I find her very thorough and she has told me a lot about my eyes and my prescription that no other doctor ever did. She has a very professional and friendly manner and you never feel rushed. She now also has a retina scan machine in the Fullerton office which gives a lot more information about your eye health. It's well worth the extra money. I went to see the optometrist at Target. A little shopping then a quick eye exam. I made sure I made an appointment ahead of time. I called in a few days before and had no problems. My appointment was at 10:30am. I got there 5 minutes early. I was asked to fill out a questionnaire on a laptop. It only took me a few minutes. So high tech! No more paper forms! By the time I signed, Dr. Tang was ready for me. She greeted me with a smile and walked me back to her office. She was friendly and patient. I had so many questions and had a difficult time deciding which frame was clearer, but she didn't seem to mind. She explained my blurry vision and what eye-related illnesses I'm at risk for. She was very clear and thorough. I don't wear glasses every day so I really appreciated Dr. Tang taking the time to help me look for glasses. Since I'm Chinese I don't have a bridge for glasses to sit on, so it was very helpful to get some tips about what kind of glasses I should be looking for. Overall, the exam was quick, simple, and convenient. Dr. Tang was friendly and remembers her returning customers, always a plus! I will definitely return to Dr. Tang for a checkup. read more
