I was extremely pleased with the service I received at Mahin's Alterations. My sister and I had two bridesmaid dresses that needed to be taken in, hemmed, along with soft cups sewn in and snaps added. The first place we went was a local dry cleaners, where the woman said she had never done some of the things we were asking for and seemed unskilled in doing alterations. Even though I like this business this isn't my preferred choice anymore since her prices have increased too much for my liking. I'm 5-ft tall and all pants I buy are too long. Been coming here for a few years now to get my jeans hemmed, I even bought a pair of partially destroyed jeans and asked one of the holes to be patched up. My daughter is in veterinary school and has a very busy schedule. She thought she'd be able to get away with a short cocktail dress for a school event but then realized everyone else was wearing gowns. Wednesday was her only "off" day and the function was on Friday! That meant finding and buying a gown on Wednesday and having it hemmed by Thursday since she had class Friday and would have to head to the function shortly thereafter. Since she's 5'2", I knew whatever dress she bought would need to be hemmed. I was working a rough and busy 12 day work week. But there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Lots of them. Red ones, blue ones, yellow ones, green ones..... It was Vegas baby. I got off a couple hours before my flight and I needed to hem a few dresses. I'm short, but yes, it's also Vegas. I came in at 2 and told her I needed them done today. She had them ready for me at 5. I don't think I would've been able to find same day alterations, not even in Sac. I've had pants hemmed here which turned out fine so I came back when I needed a bridesmaid dress taken in at the chest. It only needed to be taken in an inch or so. Cost $40 which is reasonable. Had to pay in cash and there's no receipts or any paper trail involved. It took a week (I was not in a rush) and when I tried it on it was puffy on the side where she took it in. She only took it in on one side. She also glued one of the ruffles which she claimed was already ripped when I brought it in but I'm not so sure. Plus it looked like a rushed/haphazard job. I said, "There's a problem, it's puffy here" and she says "that's not a problem grumble grumble" but does take it back and fixes the puffiness the next day. This time around, she took it in a little on both sides and it doesn't puff out anymore but now it's too big. Plus there were uncut threads hanging and again the look of half-assedness. I'll just have to wear a bra under it or something to make it fit...didn't feel like dealing with her anymore. Will not come back! read more

The shop is a little shady. It's upstairs and there's no storefront or anything. I'm pretty sure only one lady works here, and you don't get a receipt or anything. I came here because of the great Yelp reviews and was disappointed. I brought in a Juicy Couture trench coat to be shortened. I was leaving for New York the next day and I was happy when she said it could be done before my trip. I thought $40 was reasonable for the job considering the time crunch. Since I was in a hurry the next day, I didn't inspect the coat when I picked it up. When I was in NY, I saw that the stitches were uneven on the left and they weren't even finished on the right, as if she stopped midway and never got back to it. In addition, a button detail that she had to move up as a result of hemming was so awkwardly sewn back that it doesn't lay flat on the coat. It sticks out in a weird way. I was so disappointed that I didn't wanna go back for her to mess up my coat even more. I've learned my lesson not to be lazy. I will take all my alterations to Sac in the future. read more

If you have clothes that you like, don't take them here. She is the worst craftsmen and tailor that I have ever gone to. As the other postings state, Mahin is rude, uncompromising, and inadequate at her job. On top of those issues, there exists a language barrier, so she doesn't even understand how awful of a job she has done. She said the quality of the pants was poor, so that is the reason the stitching was done poorly. I have taken A.P.C.'s, Nudies, Naked & Famous to plenty of tailors and they can work with the material. Once AGAIN! If you like your clothing take it Executive Alterations and Formalwear. A little bit more expensive but completely worth the quality and care that is put in. read more

Honestly, I've only had one experience here so maybe I am too quick to judge. I had Mahin shorten a dress for me a while back and while it wasn't too expensive, for the quality of work I did feel like i was overpaying. The stitching wasn't even and I asked her to keep the lace detailing on the bottom of the slip, and while she did do this, it was second rate work at best. If I owned a sewing machine I probably could have done a better job. Recently a friend of mine brought a bridesmaid dress in here for alteration (though I warned her that the work was really just ok) and Mahin really mangled it. She was trying to fix one problem and in the end Mahin made it much worse. There aren't a lot of options in Davis for alterations, but I don't think I will be back to Mahin if I have a choice. Luckily for me I usually just need pants shortened and my El Macero Cleaners in South Davis does a great job. read more

Dissappointed in quality and price. I had a bridesmaid dress that needed to be hemmed and taken in at the top of the halter. Well, she charged $50 for the hem, which was high compared to what my NYC paid for theirs. It was a good job. However, the halter was terrible. The handsewing was horrible - it is my fault for not noticing until I got home. I re-did it myself and it was better and I am no seamstress.
