She's fantastic and quick! She altered my wedding dress in about 15 days!!! For people that say she's rude and doesn't say hello.. she's very straight to the point and wants to get to business but when you take the time to speak with her and get to know her she's sweet and kind and pretty fantastic!! She's very direct and straight forward and I think that's why people may get rubbed the wrong way by her, but she's an elder woman who does this to stay busy and whom loves to paint. She has wonderful warm heart and even in 2 encounters, she's a great person who's lived a lot of years that has a smile on her face! She was reasonably priced as well, considering getting things done in about 2 weeks instead of waiting months for alterations. I highly recommend her but when you do meet her, come in with realizing she knows what she's doing and she's direct and when you take a second to just talk about what you need and then start to open up, she's there to have a smile on her face and saying you're a "beautiful bride." She has a fitting room where you can put on your outfit and then she just marked where I wanted it shortened with a white chalk machine. Then I picked it up a week later! I LOVED working with Mahin. Me and 2 other bridesmaids needed a hem for our dresses and Mahin took us on during summer wedding season without any troubles. We called to ask if we needed to come in for a fitting appointment and she told us to show up whenever her store was open-- sweet and simple. We brought our dresses in and we (3) all got fitted within 20 minutes. She gave us a price quote, which we appreciated, and she told us she'd be done in a couple days. We were surprised, considering most other tailors couldn't fit us in. She called me about 3 days later saying our dresses were done and hemmed. Rude lady right from the start. No hello, how are you, etc.... I brought her 1 pair of jeans that needed a button, 1 top that needed a button, 1 top that had small holes in it, and 2 tops that had rips that needed to be sewn. On the 1 top that had small holes in it, she asked me, "What you want me to do?" Ummm, you're the professional, fix it. She says 20 dollars for everything and to be back Wednesday to pick the stuff up. She calls me that Wednesday and left me a voice mail saying, "Come pick up your stuff. I don't have room here because of all the prom dresses." She doesn't have room there because there's tons of paintings all over that she's trying to sell. I come get my stuff today. She says, "Finally. See all the stuff I have here." Again, no manners. No hi, hello, how are you. Then she proceeds to speak her language to a lady that sits there all day with her. I can tell she was talking about me. She starts to hand me all my stuff. No bag. Nothing. Then her friend who sits there all day starts rummaging through bags. Hands the owner lady a torn up Christmas bag. Owner lady finds a regular bag. I give her her 20 dollars and leave. She doesn't even show me the work she's done. I get home and look at my stuff. My clothes look dusty and small gross. One shirt still has the needle in it! She never fixed it, but wants me to hurry up and come get my stuff. Another shirt looks ridiculous how she sewed it. I have enclosed pictures of both. Save your money. Go somewhere where the owner at least has manners AND actually fixes everything. Also, the store is a bit hard to find. She needs more signs and a big sign that says, "Located upstairs." read more

This is just a small room with one sewing machine and one fitting room in an old building, but that's all one really needs! Mahin was friendly and did a great job on the Filipino barongs for our wedding. They are made of pineapple and banana tree leaves and she seemed to have no issue working with that kind of material. They fit us perfectly and looked great. The two barongs were done within three days, as promised. I said I'd pick them up on a Thursday and Mahin called me at 4:30pm to make sure I was still coming because she closes at 5pm - good customer service! Fair price! read more

The first time I got something altered EVER, and I have ZERO COMPLAINTS. I needed 3 pairs of pants hemmed for a photo shoot that I had in 2 days. When I called and asked Mahin how long it would take to get my pants hemmed, she politely asked when I needed it done by (I was hesitant to say Sunday because I thought 2 days wouldn't be enough turn around time) but she said she could finish it by tomorrow, and possibly the same day! So of course I drove there and got there within 30 minutes. I tried on all 3 of my pants and showed her how long I wanted each one. Each pants were different styles (chinos, dress pants, and black stretch pants) so I wanted them at different lengths. She would make sure each pants were fine, since I wanted them at different lengths, and she didn't want any mistakes to be done. (Shows how thorough she is). I took a dress here to be hemmed because I had ordered it online and it was just a touch too long. I had only paid $40 for the dress so I was hoping that the tailoring wouldn't be too expensive either. That wasn't exactly the case as it was $50 to hem it because it was too layers. However, despite the cost, it was done in a timely manner and was an excellent job. I would give Mahin all my stars. I came in today with a shirt that needed to be altered by Sunday. The shirt was overly large, going to my elbows and knees, and I was having doubts on whether it could be worked on quick. Since she's closed this weekend because of picnic day, she offered that she could have it done in less than 3 hours. Mahin's Alterations is located on G street and is across the street from G Street Pub in a little, hidden section of the buildings. A door opens up to a stair case which leads directly to her door to the other businesses in the building. Mahin herself is a perfectly delightful lady. I have been there several times and have never seen her be rude to anybody (even when she was in a rush to catch a 5 o'clock movie). I have gotten my off-the-rack suit tailored by her as well as a couple of shirts. With shirts, she basically hems them up from the cuff. I'm not too keen on this, as it makes the sleeve look weird, but Sarah of Sarah's Alterations does the same thing. When I asked her about it, she asked me if anybody else did it differently and I replied that Han used to do it from the top of the sleeve by the shoulder. She replied in a genuinely nice way that I should take it to other tailors to see if they could do the work I wanted. Ultimately, Sarah could only do the same as there was not enough give in the shirt sleeve. However, whereas Sarah charges $17 for shirt sleeve hemming, Mahin charges $12. Mahin does not use a ticket-based system, which makes me a little scared of losing my clothes. But, so far, I haven't lost any article of clothing. I would recommend her to anybody shopping around for a good tailor, and especially for anybody looking to get a dress altered (almost all the items of clothing on her "done" rack were dresses). read more

I took two pairs of pants here and it cost me over $50, more than the pants were worth! I needed to hem them both and take in the waist of one. There was a small bit of detail on the pants that needed the waist taken in, and she didn't know what to do with it. She I tried them on to explain to her how I wanted the waist taken in, she just kept asking me what was that, how did I put it there, and I kept telling her that that is how the pants were made, and that I have no idea how it was put together. I came here willing to pay the higher price because everyone raved about how she worked magic on their clothes, but this waist seam was poorly done, crooked, and SHE REMOVED THE BIT OF DETAIL THAT I WANTED TO KEEP. If I had known she was going to do a poor job, I would have taken it to a different place that wasn't as expensive. Now they're just boring black pants without any pockets and waist seam. And if it were a detail that were hard to keep or impossible to work around, she should have told me. I specifically asked her if she could keep the detail in when she kept asking me about it, and she showed me the different ways she could make it work. I asked her twice to keep the detail, to not remove it in the alteration, and twice she confirmed she would. read more

Heather at The Wardrobe in Davis recommended Mahin for altering the Sue Wong dress I'd purchased a mere three weeks before my wedding. I only needed a slight alteration of the tank-style tie behind the neck, and when I walked the dress two blocks over to Mahin's, tried on the dress and showed her how I wanted it to be altered, she requested same day alteration service. 'How long will it take,' I asked warily. 'Twenty minutes,' she said, after oohing and aahing over the dress. SOLD! I told her I'd shop around while she sewed. Twenty minutes later I walked back up the steps and she was nearly done. I inspected the work - rough hand sew job, in keeping with the fact that the tie would be behind my neck. I noticed the beaded tie bangle on one side was wearing thin and she touched it up. All in all, I felt my $20 was well spent. While I waited, another happy customer came in to pick up a pillow that had been resewn from what appeared to be drapes. Mahin is the absolute kindest and by far quickest tailor here in Davis. I came in the week of Halloween to get a jersey knit dress cut & hemmed and a slip dress for my halloween costume taken in. The jersey knit dress cost $20 and the slip dress also cost $20 to be altered. Mahin told me right away that for the slip dress, she had to figure out how to take it in because the lining was sewn into the dress, therefore she cut me a deal and would get the job done before Halloween.
