This past weekend my partner and I were looking for a five star-rated restaurant we've never been to before, and Yelp delivered! If you've never heard of Magnolia Fusion, I highly suggest you check these amazing folks out because we had a great experience. Located near 185th and TV Highway, Magnolia Fusian is one of several businesses adding international flavor to this little pocket of Aloha. The business is family-owned, and visitors sense they're in for something special as soon as they step foot in the door. Brian, the owner's son, greeted us with a smile and helped us navigate the extensive menu. There is a whole lot to choose from here as the menu boasts both Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. We're talking gyoza, gyros and baklava, with some arroz con leche thrown in for good measure... and I'm all about it! We ordered a wide variety of dishes, and Brian kept us entertained while our food was being prepared. He let us know the pre-existing Mediterranean restaurant was purchased by his mother and her sister last year, and they added Asian cuisine to the menu. His mother has extensive experience working in Asian restuarants, and has also done her fair share of catering as well. That level of experience is made abundantly clear in not only the quality of the food, but precision with which she prepares and serves the food. Our selections arrived at the table in the blink of an eye. We ordered the chicken yakisoba, a gyro, and some Greek fries... and everything hit the spot! The chicken yakisoba had the perfect level of spice, the noodles and veggies had just the right amount of bite, and it was served with a delicious house-made hot chili oil. The gyro had everything going for it; fresh pita, tender and juicy slices of meat, and a delicious tzatziki sauce that helped bring all the flavors together. And wouldn't you know, these kind folks brought us out complimentary arroz con leche for dessert! I love supporting small businesses like Magnolia Fusion, and genuinely wish this family the best of luck as they continue reaching out to the community to win over new customers. They're quickly showing they've got what it takes to create long-lasting success.

Teriyaki Salad was yum

To be honest, we were in the parking lot close to Magnolia Fusion because we were looking for some outdoor tacos. Unfortunately the taco tent was no where in sight so we decided to give Mongolia Fusion a try. It was quiet when we arrived, so we placed our order and grabbed a table quickly. It is an interesting concept, both Mediterranean food and Japanese-style teriyaki dishes. Our food came and everything was surprising delicious. We tried the chicken teriyaki plate and the lamb & rice plate. Both were delicious and generously portioned. The lamb & rice plate came with a bowl of salad, hummus and fresh pita bread. While the chicken teriyaki sat on top of a pile of steamed rice and salad. Everything was cooked well and easy to eat. The portion reminded me what we used to get for lunch back the 2000's, enough food for dining in and leftovers to go. Oh that was a good time. Overall, we highly recommend Mongolia Fusion as the food was good and the price was reasonable considering the portions. We could have easily shared either of the plates we ordered.

Came here a second time, this time I ordered different menu items. I got the gyro pita wrap which was a nice large portion and very filling! I also got the chicken yakisoba (which I got for my dinner later ). Both great portion sizes. The inside of the shop is quaint and nice and clean. The outside looks unassuming and is location in a small ethnic businesses strip mall. The cashier (assuming she was the owner) was nice and sweet. Look forward to returning during lunch breaks to try more from their menu.

Chicken shawarma special.

This is possibly a case of me getting the wrong thing but I'm just going off of past experiences I'm always suspect of fusion especially as the cuisines drift further apart geographically but something told me that the middle eastern end was the way to go. They had a special for the chicken shawarma that included a side. I'm a big fan of variety so this was a plus. I got the hummus and pita. Store bought pita but it was still good. Hummus was nice and smooth and flavorful. I like the sprinkle of spices too. Great on its own. The shawarma was ok. It was moist but almost to the point of watery where the flavor got washed out a little. It had a sauce that was like a sriracha mayo type thing. Not my favorite but maybe it's traditional. The seating area is very simple. But clean. I could see myself coming back and maybe getting lamb.

Bottom is Teriyaki platter (yakisoba with Chicken, shrimp and tofu) and Top is teriyaki yakisoba. Middle is rice pudding!

Another hole in the wall halal spot I learned about. The teriyaki chicken was good, though the grilled shrimp skewer and yakisoba weren't anything to write home about (both overcooked), and tofu wasn't one I'd repeat. I'm curious to try their fusion teriyaki chicken wraps and burgers on a future visit. Service is very friendly, and they even gave us free rice puddings since they were about to close. Honestly I'll be going back even if just to get more of the rice pudding!

Food was excellent, we had the chicken teriyaki and the katsu with noodles. Service was also awesome. Highly recommend, great Halal food.

If it's your first time, I would suggest the Brisket sampler plate to taste all the yummy goodness in a single swoop. Four meats, fries and 2 sides...they don't mess around. For me, the Brisket and especially the Pulled Pork were stars, but the Chicken was no slouch either. I went with the Mac & Cheese + Cole Slaw options, and didn't leave a morsel behind, they were so good. Maybe I was hungry that day, or maybe the deliciousness of the meal just made me hungry, but damn, this place is good. Alternative sides that I didn't get to try include: rice, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, cornbread, and maybe beans. I may be tempted to switch it up next time. Really happy with this find. In my opinion Raining BBQ is the Reigning BBQ!

This was a major let down. All the hype for a disappointing experience…read more From the start the staff seemed just unhappy, like things weren't jiving well. The server wasn't able to answer questions about ingredients, shellfish in particular and had to be reminded. We had the garlic pork belly which was quite salty and not the best. It was a giant slab which made it take a long time to cook. The marinade could use a revisit and adjusted to taste better. Next we had the beef bulgogi. Again the marinade was a let down and it needs more of everything and less sugar. The meat was diced up and not what you'd expect for beef bulgogi. The third meat was honey soy pork belly. This was the best of the meats we had. For sides we had rice which was not served hot and was already just warm when it was delivered and was on the drier side. Japchae, which was just really sad and didn't taste like japchae should. Just a sad cold pile of sweet noodles with some fried onions and bell peppers. This dish needs some serious improvement. Crispy mandoo, can't complain, they were maybe one if the better parts of the meal, again the sauce was on the sweeter side and could have used more shoyu. Sundubu had a good soup base but was bell pepper city and only had 2 pieces of tofu. Radish paper was a delicious addition and really leveled up everything. I don't feel a need to revisit this place again, but I'm glad I tried it.

I think this is going to become my new favorite BBQ spot…read more We placed our order at the counter with a friendly server. Once everything is ready they call out your name or number to pick it up. Everything we ordered here was delicious! Every meat option was "cooked" soooo good with amazing flavor, tenderness, and just overall yumminess. For sides we went with the Mac & cheese and brisket chili. The chili was good but I LOVED the Mac & cheese. We also had to try a burnt ends sandwich with Mac & cheese piled on it. It was amazing! Of course it's a little on the spendy side for a meal but it's a platter of MEAT so be ready to spend a little more than usual. There is a full bar but we didn't indulge this visit. Our only gripe was about the parking. We're are definitely not regular visitors to the downtown area so we don't have the different apps loaded or websites ready to pay for street parking around Portland. I feel old saying it but I wish there were still meters or little ticket machines available for these type of short visits to the area. That won't stop us from coming back here for another meal... or 5... though. Give this place a try! It's all delicious!

After being on my list for over a year, I finally got to try Lawless. Unfortunately, it puts…read morePortland BBQ back into the category that I declared long ago as just tolerable in the sense that I am from the South and have had better meals out of a Styrofoam box than I have had in Portlands sad attempts of trying to upscale food that needs to be cooked with Soul! I'm not surprised... just disappointed that aside from one wayward, inexplicable New Yorker... this town has yet to produce one Pit Master! The food was tender but was just ok. It had flavor but not enough of the right flavor. The ribs fell off the bone a little too easily and had such a light smoke that they could have easily just been roasted in an oven. Considering they came pre-sauced in a sickeningly sweet Dr. PEPPERESQUE BBQ Sauce...I feel like they are trying to cover up the tasteless of the meat. No bark. No Smoke ring... just copious amounts of sauce! That's a huge Red Flag with BBQ! Truly great BBQ requires no sauce and any self respecting Pit man will not serve it that way. It issues always to be served on the side... let me decide if I like the taste of your meat or if I need it to cover up the lack of flavor. Thankfully, they make that decision for you here at Lawless so you don't get bland meat...unless you get the pulled pork sandwich...meat piled high is nice but like the ribs, no coloring to denote the meat ever touched a smoker. Instead a vinegar slaw and mustard dressing and no sauce. I must have missed the description on the menu describing it as a Carolina approach... I'm just used to having a choice when it comes to a basic pulled pork sandwich. I've lived in Portland long enough not to trust BBQ here... but I had a momentary weakness... one that will now be corrected by me cranking up my own smoker and smoking my own ribs and pork butt... BBQ flavored with salt, pepper, and smoke. No Sauce needed! Oh... and the greens... tasted liked someone in culinary school made them... tough and leafy...minimal flavor to the Pot Likker! And bacon? Everyone knows you don't use bacon to make your greens! It dries out from the long cook time and gets gritty! I really hope whomever runs this place ain't Southern... they granny rolling over in her grave! If you're a lifelong Portlander... or from Iowa... eat here...it is close enough. But if you have a list of your top five BBQ meals of all time in your head... only eat here if you can't make it yourself and you are really missing home. That was me today... unfortunately, I think I left sadder than when I arrived.

It's one of those places where you know you're going to have a good meal, and the consistency is a huge reason to keep coming back. The flavors are amazing, and the overall experience is always enjoyable. The staff are also incredibly pleasant, kind, and welcoming! Good food is one thing, but having friendly staff who make you feel comfortable and taken care of makes the experience even better. The ambiance is great, too, with a fun, lively atmosphere that makes it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. One thing to know before you go: the indoor seating area is VERY small. There are only about five tables inside, so seating can be limited, especially during busy times. From what I've seen, there are approximately three tables that seat four people and two larger tables that can accommodate bigger groups. However, the outdoor seating is a huge plus! The street is blocked off for the restaurants in the area, creating a great outdoor dining space with plenty of seating options. Overall, 1st St Pocha is absolutely worth checking out. Between the consistently delicious food, kind staff, great atmosphere, and outdoor seating, it's a place I'd happily recommend. Just keep the small indoor dining area in mind if you're planning to visit on a busy day!
