Looking for lunch and ran across solid Yelp ratings for Happy Bamboo. I am happy to report they were all true. Good food, service and value.

The ambience inside is really pleasant, small but chic, with live plants around that make it feel fresh and welcoming. I ordered pho, but unfortunately the soup wasn't as hot as it should have been. By the time I added the fresh veggies, the broth had cooled down quite a bit. I was hesitant to complain, so I ended up taking most of it home to reheat. That said, the broth itself was tasty and flavorful. This place seems promising, and I'm hoping it was just a one-off experience. I'm thinking of giving it another try. read more

So glad my husband pointed this place out when we were in the area! The owner is very sweet and personable and the food quality is equally as positive. My family and I ordered the Pho Đặc Biệt, Bún Bò Huế, kids Pho, and Shrimp salad rolls. My son and I both agreed that the pho was flavorful and they gave us a generous portion of noodles and broth. Thanks for not skimping considering the high prices of pho these days! The meats in the broth were all cooked well. I appreciate the utensils coming out in individual bags so you know they care about cleanliness and being sanitary. As a super picky Viet pho- eater (hard to convince me to eat pho unless I'm sick, otherwise I will critique from sun up til sun down on pho for $20 a bowl lol) I would definitely come back here again! Always good but I just wanted to share something else that I ate. I of course ordered their lemon grass pork plate which was always good, flavorful, and great portions, too! I also ordered Vietnamese coffee to share with my dad. It was a bit too sweet at first but then the after taste had nice strong coffee. I wish we could see it drip from the cup but I guess that's no longer as common these days. I also had the opportunity to try their two kinds of flan. One was regular caramel and the other was coffee. The owner said that they were made in two different ways and both were very good. The coffee flavor was nice and strong and the egg flavor was present. The texture was nice and smooth, too! The chicken and pork vermicelli bowls were on point -- packed with flavor and generous portions of meat. I usually don't get full from a vermicelli bowl, but this one had me stuffed in the best way. I would also add two fried egg rolls. Service was excellent, and the ambiance transported me straight to a Vietnamese restaurant abroad. We tried this small, family-owned business for some phone and tried our things too. The staff was extremely attentive to our needs and was very friendly. I personally thought the pho was a little bland but I added some pepper/salt and hoisin sauce. I saw a sign on their door that they don't use MSG so that might be why. The portions are huge for a bowl of pho! It was my first time trying a vermicelli bowl and it was so delicious. I loved the chicken, most especially. This small restaurant has a clean and relaxing setup with a relatively small menu (2 pages?) It's perfect for those who often struggle with menus of 100+ items (us)! We ordered the teriyaki and shrimp, beef pho, and shrimp rolls, all were delicious and fresh. I think I just need to accept the new reality that pho is $15 now. I don't have to like it but I understand. I got the Bo bun happy bamboo. How can you really go wrong with the places name in it. I was warned about the spicy level and accepted my fate I think they actually held back for me. I appreciated that there wasn't any weird meats in it. I'm not a huge fan of connective tissue. We came for lunch on the weekend and were the only ones dining in, although there was a steady stream of take-out orders. The Pho Special is a little larger than the Pho beef bowl and comes with all 4 proteins. The tripe was good--not tough or chewy, and the brisket was tender. The broth had a slightly sweeter flavor than most pho beef broths. Each person gets their own plate of veggies and condiments. For Happy Bamboo it means a very "homestyle" rendition of what you've probably had all over Beaverton and Portland. Some may not like the lightness, I for one enjoy the comfort it brings... because it's like how my family from long ago make it... with fresh cuts, fresh herbs and lots of care rather than shortcuts. I especially appreciate their brisket cuts and source. On this particular day I could taste the moist meaty softness. No added MSG doesn't mean certain ingredients like fish sauce doesn't have MSG, it means they aren't going to throw in a bag of MSG into the broth that they make. On a cold rainy day, especially getting over a cold, oh man this hits the spot and warms the soul. There's nothing more perfect than having a pho restaurant near my new apartment where they serve vegan pho with organic tofu and don't use msg. Like seriously, could I ask for anything more than that? The pho broth was flavorful and not plain like in other places and because it didn't have msg it didn't give me a headache or thirst. As our first time trying this place, we ordered take-out and got the pho. I haven't had good pho in a long time and this place is definitely my top choice from now on! We had asked for cabbage and carrots to go with the pho (not typical) and she explained that they only had shredded cabbage on hand but was able to get the chefs to steam some chopped cabbage and carrots for us. She went out of her way to fulfill our order and for that reason I'm giving them a 5-star review (and because the food was delicious)! Very good! So excited to welcome this new spot to the otherwise-lackluster group of restaurants at the Safeway (fka Albertsons) shopping center. The only place that brings us up over there these days is McBee's, though with the change in weather we're rarely stopping in. Everything else up there is a hard pass, imo, and not worth my hard-earned dollars. But, back to the main stage: two of us popped into Happy Bamboo on a weeknite for a warm, quick meal of beef pho (with meatballs, tenderloin, and brisket) and pork vermicelli. Both were really good! They offered the usual fixins -- hoisin, sriracha, lime, bean sprouts, thai basil -- to spice/season my pho up to the desired intensity. Portions were hearty enough that I thought about taking some of it home, but ultimately ate it all up there. Not too crowded and waitstaff (I'm assuming the owners) were friendly and attentive. I am also so happy that this place is now on the list of Yelp's 100 Top Portland-area restaurants for the year. Hope it thrives! read more

I had not been in here since the name and ownership changed. I have to say first impressions were how warm, fun and inviting the place has become. There is definitely a push to show they are a step above the normal Asian fair. The decor is great and detailed, the greeting I received was super warm and friendly. I got an order to go today and I really felt that the food was very good in quality, hot, fresh and tasted great. I watched bowls of Pho go to some tables and I really need to come back to eat here for Pho alone. The customer service was fantastic, I just have to say this again as I watched the lady here take care of her customers. This alone makes me want to return, I just really appreciate when people are so appreciative of your business. The food could be mediocre and If the service is great I am going. Full disclosure this is a new restaurant by a former coworker. I got here kind of late, 7pm on a Saturday. They were out of pho which I had heard was really good. Instead I had the teriyaki chicken and a strawberry smoothie. The chicken came with rice and cabbage with dressing. It was all very good with large portions. They are new so I was the only customer at that time. The service was good with soft piano playing. I will have to come again to try the pho. This is such a cute spot with good vibes, great food, and great service. We first got the shrimp salad rolls which were perfect - very refreshing, and the peanut sauce was so good. I got the shrimp pho which came with a variety of veggies inside which was a nice surprise. The shrimp in it was perfectly cooked, juicy, and delicious. Everything in the pho tasted so flavorful and fresh - the cilantro and green onions especially added so much good flavor to the broth. It came with two sauces to add in, a dark sweeter one and spicy hot sauce. It was 10/10 pho in my opinion, very satisfying. The staff were also so friendly and nice !
