My coworkers decided to order lunch from here last week on a workday. I was excited to try somewhere new and ordered the triple delight (no beef) lunch combo. The lunch combo comes with fried rice which was not fried rice at all. Instead it was plain chewy brown rice that had zero flavor. It also came with hot and sour soup which was ok but had a weird sweet after taste and just wasn't great. The brocolli was cooked wonderfully and was probably my favorite part of the whole lunch. Here's a funny for you, my son and I go to dine in because it had a 4 star rating, we're fairly new to the area and we haven't really eaten out anywhere and had a taste for Chinese. We walk in, and the place was empty, so I should've known then. We get the death stare when we walk in as if we were lost. The young man with earbuds in his ears says: "2". Clearly. Then tells us to "go sit down" and gestures toward a table that was surrounded by rice on the floor. He tosses the menus on the table, fills our water glasses (which had lint in them from the cloth napkin that was on the inside)and walks away. The server comes out and shuffles her young child to the back, no greeting and proceeds to walk past our table 3 times, the third time, she burps! Nasty! Finally, the cook I assume comes out with 2 bowls and looks at us and says "you order?". We weren't quite ready yet, out of shock from the burp still. He says: "ok" sits down to watch the football game and eat. We proceed to depart and they look up: "we don't feel welcome, we will find someplace else to eat." I'm happy I got takeout lunch here on a Thursday instead of Friday, because if I came on a Friday then it would have ruined the start to my weekend. I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special which comes with an egg roll and wonton soup, at $8 was super cheap. I was thinking it would have fried rice (or white), instead it had a very dry brown rice. I ended up eating one bite of that and same with the egg roll. The wanton soup turned out alright, the wantons were small but the broth was good. The soup crisps tasted stale so I only had a few. On to the main attraction- the hailed sesame chicken! It was actually pretty decent. The sauce was flavorful and not too thick, but there were way too many sesame seeds. Overall the chicken was good enough to salvage an extra star. Let's get this point across: if you are going to a cheap Chinese diner called Magic Wok, don't think it's going to look like Trump Hotel. They do good for what they have. This is my first time as I just moved from Alabama a year ago. The soup they give you as an appetizer is pretty on point (choice between hot and sour, egg drop, and wonton). My 200th review. While it's not a 5 star one, it's a very special one. If you had asked me as an 11 year old what I thought of Magic Wok, I shyly would gave shown you 5 fingers, one for each star. I'm slightly saddened to say much older, I cannot give 5 stars. Regardless, I am very happy to see they are still around. Magic Wok was the site of many family dinners, parties and other events surrounding the growth of my Papa's investment company in the 90s. I was a snob even at that young age, so I can honestly say the service and food was impeccable in those days. Certainly, as my final meal in the DC area before returning to California for good, I would experience the same service and share great memories. My Mother, not as excited about those memories, joined me for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. The first thing I noticed was the change in decor. Of course, that should be the case so many years later, however it just felt as though it lacked something and each table lost the intimacy I remembered. The back room our events were held in though is still there, though looked a bit sad. Maybe that's just because it was empty. Our lunch orders were promptly taken by a very nice young gentlemen. My Mama can be fickle when it comes to ordering, I was impressed with the server's ability to work through the ordering process with her and his level of patience, the smile never left his face. Our drinks were promptly brought out and our appetizer (wings) followed shortly after. I was immediately disappointed by the wings. While not a huge fan of traditional wings, I love Asian style wings. For some reason, both Mama & I expected an Asian appetizer when we ordered, but it was just regular ole fried chicken, no special seasonings (that I could taste), no special sauce, nothing. They were hot and crispy, so not bad on that end, but I wouldn't order them again. I could just go to Popeyes for that. Next our meals, arrived. I chose the hunan chicken and my Mama chose the orange chicken. My meal was delicious. It was the perfect size for lunch, fresh tasting, great flavor and at a great price. I liked my Mama's orange chicken also, though it was too saucy for both of us. I think that most people would like that though. The real downer to our meal was that some business associate of Magic Wok's (maybe a vendor) was sitting at a table in the middle of the restaurant conducting business. He was incredibly loud, brash, sloppy and just unpleasant. While the representatives of Magic Wok dealing with him handled themselves in a professional and quiet manner, they should have sat this rude man in the back room so not to disrupt their guest. It was honestly awful and put a damper on my goodbye lunch with my Mama. We rushed through our meals to get out of there. Not how I saw the afternoon going. On the plus side the health inspector was there and after she completed her work, she ordered food. That's always a great sign for cleanliness! The fact that I know all that though is a negative as again those conversations were held much too loudly. All in all, I would return here in passing, for carry out, or when experiencing a bit of nostalgia but perhaps wouldn't go out of my way again. If its title "MAGIC WOK" as an indication of the authentic & exotic Chinese or Thai foods, as above average so it will be MAGIC, you will be surprisely disappointed. It's not only its foods tasteless but its operations LAWLESS! Occasionally I bought their lunch specials which were full of 1) soy sauce 2) MSG 3)corn starches. That's my regular impressions. For example, the Hot & Sour Soup has nothing in it except soysauce, MSG and starches. Only a little bit sliced, like a breathless silk thread from scrambled egg, floated in the soup. Its fried rice has no substance but pulled in all of dark soy sauce to make it look like a MAGIC meal but only sodium and MSG in it which is absolute unhealthy for our health-concerned foods chasers. Last month, I ordered 2 dinners & 1 hot and sour soup. According to its manu flyer's coupon, it offers customer "buy one dinner get 2nd of 1/2 price", but when I heard its total was charged higher, seemed only gv 40% not 50%, over the phone I asked that young man why, who has a funny hair cut seemed planted on his funny look, he rudely claimed and rushed, "it's been set up in computer like this! You want this order (entirely ) or not? I have other customer on the phone!" He acted like he's powerful and not even allow its customer to question its hidden tricks behind its advertisement although he's not owner at all but worked over the counter. I don't believe that "computer sets up like that", rather, he personally entered the "40%" rather 50% into the computer. When the nice and hardworking Hispanic deliver arrived for foods, I put a notice with detailed calculation to the bill I sighed, and also noted by the bill, in case if that snobbish young man does not cooperate, but give less tips to this nice Hispanic delivery person, I gave additional tip in cash to him on the site besides added tips to be charged to my credit and debt card in the bill based on my CORRECT calculation also based on its Manu flyer's advertisement. However to my surprise, a few days later I received my bank statement, I discovered this young fellow, a funny Hair cut on his funny look, very snobbish type person (not detail here), illegally and unethical charged more than I agreed and sighed to my credit card in the bill! He even never contacted me as its costumer before he "authorized" the total mismatch ed amount to my bank card! I almost wanted to report him as a fraud to my bank for this sum, and completely declined this sum of foods as a punishment to him which would affect his boss' business! Also reported him to the county or the state Consumer Affair Dept! But I didn't do it rather stopped by to question him face to face. Only this time, this snobbish young boy "smilled" with a guilt look not like his regular rude attitude and indifferent expression before, he knew he's at fault. He told me never go back to his restaurant by throwing a refund cash to me over the counter! I informed him officially: I already informed all of my many friends the same evening when I ate his restaurant' foods, especially that so-called dinner dish "House Special Rice Noodle", that I will never come back to this restaurant again! To this funny look boy's attitude, to his unethical operating toward its advertising, to its "House Special" meal's tastelss, no any oil, any color, any spices, like eating a slice by a slice of RUBBER but packed 4 bags of soy sauce as a compensation! Besides its Hot & Sour Soup's flaverless without any substance (normally this soup is my faver in American-style-Chinese food) which reminded me in that last night and the last meal from them ! Now, added the factor that he purposely unauthorized to add some higher amount in total to the customer already signed bill which is even disgusting leading to my determination that never go back to this business. For its Bad foods, bad practice of lawlessness, bad operating in advertising tricks ! And spread my words to everyone. In addition, it's quite suspicious that normally restaurant especially Chinese restaurant can't wait but charged you immediately, but this restaurant THIS TIME intentionally waited for two days to charge me. Enn, quite unusual, something hidden for this practice, if w/o any one or any party directed him doing so, does he dare doing so? How do you think ? Plus, as other customers noticed, whenever I stopped by , only one or two tables w. 1 or 2 customers sit by each table. Really wonder how it conducts the business with profit vs. costs, plus such a below average American - styled -Chinese foods? A fool. Quick, friendly service. Food was average. We ordered the Crab Rangoon, General Tso's Chicken and Crispy Honey Shrimp. The Crab Rangoon was the most decent tasting. The chicken dish was okay, the shrimp dish not very good. It was made with the flat fried shrimp (mostly batter and tail) and was fully covered in a tangy tomato sauce. I ate maybe 3 and threw the rest away. Gave them 3 stars, because the Rangoon gives hopes that maybe we just picked bad dishes to try. read more

As far as your typical Chinese restaurant goes - this one is alright. The food isn't that bad, could use some more seasoning (I don't know what I would add, but the lo mein lacks some flavor), but other than that it's fine. Especially on a Saturday or Sunday night when you really don't want to cook and you are craving an egg roll. Prices are reasonable, the egg drop soup is good and they serve alcohol. The carry out isn't a hassle either - 15 minutes and you have good food. It's way better than the Thai place up the street too! read more

My family & I have been getting our Chinese from Magic Wok for 10+years and have always been satisfied with the portion sizes, pricing, QUICK delivery, and food taste. They have changed chefs several times in those years..some chefs styles' required a little bit of adjustment (spiciness of the Kung Pao, etc.) but overall a great Chinese place. We have eaten in the restaurant itself. Actually, we went there as a family after my Dad's funeral-He LOVED Magic Wok and it seemed appropriate to go to his favorite restaurant. The serving staff was able to take on a very large party (around 20 people) on about 10 minutes' notice and were polite, helpful, and attentive. Give Magic Wok a try...either delivery or dine-in. Something has changed for the worse with this place. Seems they are often trying to cut corners with their food and not give the customer what they ordered. I was surprised by this as they were once my go-to Chinese restaurant for carry-out. Now it seems they aren't getting the business they once did and it shows. I ordered Sesame Chicken, Moo-shu chicken and fried rice and asked for an order of steamed broccoli and extra sauce. The ordering over the phone was made difficult since the order taker kept asking me to hold on and putting me on hold. Really?...I mean I'm trying to give you some business here. Then, once he got the order, I didn't receive the extras I asked for. The order was missing the broccoli and the extra sauce. I called again to explain there were items missing from my order. I got the run-around on the phone so I ventured over to the restaurant to get it straightened out. The place was practically empty (wonder why?) save for the manager, two customers and kitchen staff. I explained that there were missing items from my order and I came to get them. The helper grudgingly gave me the extra sauce and then the manager/owner tried to charge me $7.50 for an order of steamed broccoli...WHAT??? I can get a fresh head of broccoli from the store for less than two dollars! You keep your steamed broccoli... Needless to say, they've lost my business. read more

I'm not sure what the attraction for everyone is here, but the Chinese food here is horrible! Everything was either too sweet, too salty, or too dry. We only came here because a friend organized a birthday party here. The food was served up family style: lemon chicken (overcooked and too sweet), fried rice (ok), a vegetable and shrimp dish (too salty), egg drop soup (too thick and salty), orange beef (way too sweet and overcooked). On the plus side, it is good for groups, and the staff are very nice. If you can drive a further 4.5 miles, head to Baileys Crossroads and get your Chinese food fix there instead! read more

The meat was better quality than most chinese restaurants but you can tell that they used a lot of meat tenderizer. There used to be 2 Chinese restaurants named Magic Wok, 1 in Belle View Shopping Center that closed in August 2019, 2nd one on Franconia Rd. I decided try this one even though further away. Common theme, both were family owned. The one on Franconia Rd seemed seemed more laid back, as I had to wait upon entering before being greeted even though very few customers with pandemic concerns. As i liked the fried chicken wings at the previous location, that is one of the items i ordered. I also ordered Hunan Beef. I was somewhat disappointed in both, perhaps because my expectations. The wings were at best only average. The Hunan Beef did not have some other vegetables such as sliced carrots nor baby corn, and the flavor of the brown sauce was boring, not much spiciness that should be with a Hunan dish. It took less than 15 minutes. Everything except the rice looked and tasted great. The rice had a tan-ish hue and looked a bit either underdone or was close to spoiling. The food was over cooked leaving the shrimp dried out and it was overly battered to the point half of my plate will filled with fried batter I had picked off.
