We're doing some major home renovations and wanted to be sure our chimney was 100% good to go. Our home contractor recommended Magic Wand. They came and did what they needed to do inside the house, again keeping everything incredibly clean. They then said that there was some outside work that they recommended: some re-pointing, redoing the crown, cleaning the brickwork, and a few other things. I gave them a down payment and they came back a couple of months later. Took them about 3 days, mostly because they had to put up and take down their scaffolding. I have had many service persons at my old house, I give very few reviews, and I only write positive reviews. I had to have my chimney serviced; Crown and flashing repaired, twenty plus bricks (cutout and) replaces, and chimney cleaned. It was two full days of work. Richard the owner/mason I found him to be a pleasure to work with, and watching him work. He does good work and left the work areas clean, taking every bit of cracked bricks/mortar with him. Also, blew the leaves out of the gutters because he was there and they needed it, good work ethics. Richard replaced the bricks around the top of my chimney, put in a new chimney liner, and re-pointed the bricks in the firebox as well as repointing some bricks on the outside of the chimney. I was impressed by him throughout the whole experience. When he came and provided the quote, one of the things we asked him about was some holes in the brick that we thought needed to be repaired. He explained that they were actually weep holes for water to drain from and needed to be there. We were planning to paint the bricks, and he told us he'd send us a picture later of the sponges we could put in when we painted. True to his word, later in the day he followed up with the details he'd promised. While this may seem small, I've had so many flaky contractors give me quotes and not do what they say they're going to that this was very refreshing. I was also impressed that he had chimney-sweep coloring books for the kids when he gave us the estimate. The estimate was very reasonable in price, and Richard was very responsive as I communicated with him about the project as we were deciding whether or not to have him do the work. When he came and did the work, he was very professional in all our interactions. He put down drop cloths from the front door to the fireplace (something else I've had contractors not do), and cleaned up at the end of each day. He explained everything he was doing, and was just very pleasant to work with. His workmanship was very good, and I plan to hire him again if we ever need additional work done. read more

Review only for assessment and estimate. No work completed. They came over and suggested an 11 inch liner which "may not fit so chimney tiles may need to be removed." Ummm my chimney is 9/13 so an 11 inch liner would absolutely be too big. Instead of installing a 9 inch liner that actually fits my chimney, you want to remove portions of my chimney to fit a big liner? Do you have a bunch of extra 11 inch liners laying around that you're trying to use? They also oversold how important the work is. Then they wanted to charge me for the estimate without ever mentioning this prior. Nope sorry. I've received 2 other quotes from reputable places and who didn't charge and were able to take measurements. Maybe they do good work, I won't be hiring them to find out. After the recent wind storm in the area, we realized we had some tree damage to the flues and chimney pots. I requested a quote from a company I found on Checkbook, but he personally had 3 trees down in his yard, and he referred us to Richard. Richard responded right away and came to give us an estimate in a timely manner. He was on time, had a neat truck, a black top hat and chimney sweep overcoat! His estimate was the best of 3, and without being at all pushy, he actually asked for the business! Most service folks just leave you the estimate, and they don't follow up or seem at all interested in whether they get your business or not. I never heard from the other 2 companies at all. He kept to his original schedule and budget, and was exceptionally clean and tidy throughout the project. The scope of work included removing damaged mortar joints and installing a new steel liner, crown and lock top damper. He power-washed the chimney and caulked as needed and did an outstanding job. Richard came out on a Sunday for an estimate on a broken fireplace, after rescheduling a few times from the previous week. Seemed like a straight shooter but couldn't get him back on the phone the following week. Finally got a hold of him and he let me know he was too busy to do the work and then hung up on me. Lost a Sunday in addition to the delay in finding someone reputable and reliable to get the work done. Magic Wand (Richard and Steve) came out and did some repairs to our chimney--not as easy as it sounds. They had to erect almost 30 feet of scaffolding on top of the deck, remove and replace cracked bricks, repair the chimney cap and remove and repack multiple courses of mortar. They started early and finished around noon the next day. While they were here I also had them clean the chimney. All told they did an outstanding job. It was messy but when they left the place was spotless. To make matters even less complicated no one needed to be home although I stayed part of the first day until they got pretty well settled but not the second day.
