Agatha does my hair for several times, she is a korean lady who rents a corner at magic scissors to serve her customers. She can always make you look amazing when you step out of her door. She also gives you her opinion when you want to try something new. She always have a few appointments at the same time, sometimes it would really make me sit at the chair for 2 hours for just hair cut, shampoo and dry. You can imagine how long it could take if you need a perm or color. I really recommend anyone to give her a try especially if you are asian ONLY if you don't mind to wait for a big longer (since there are plenty of magazines that you can read in the salon)! If I remember right i paid $35 for haircut+shampoo and dry, another $35 for color. read more

I really needed a haircut and after reading the wonderful reviews about Agatha I decided to set up an appointment with her. She asked how I wanted my hair and I told her to do basically whatever she wanted and she did an amazing job. She knows what looks good on you and takes her time doing it. I didn't find her quiet either like some of the reviews said. She was talkative and very sweet. There is a lady who works for her washing hair and cleaning up who was also very nice and gives you like a head massage while washing your hair which was nice too. This review is for Tatiana. This was my second visit to the place. Location: The salon is located in a strip mall in Niles,IL. Plenty of parking available. Service: Tatiana was really good about discussing my needs and the look i wanted to have. She took the time to show me pictures. I have really fine, dark and thinning hair which is genetic. It helped immensely to see pictures of hairstyles that were no muss, no fuss, everyday wear that i could do. Tatiana also convinced me that getting low lights would really improve the look and i am really happy i went for them. I am very finicky when it comes to hairstylists because of my thinning hair. However, Tatiana really put me at ease, made sure i was comfortable all along (even gave me cookies!) and talked me through the entire process. I can honestly say that i never really felt at ease in salons and am not very comfortable most times. But this time was different. I will continue to go there as my hair grows out. Price: The price is moderate and having been to much pricier salons in chicago, is so much worth it. Agatha did a great job of cutting my hair. I would go to a Supercuts and no matter what I ask for, I'd always get a buzz cut. She had a good sense as to what style would be best for me. Outside of Chinatown, I'd say she is one of the better hairstylists for Asian men. If you are out in the burbs looking to get a nice haircut and you're an Asian dude like me, Agatha won't disappoint. The worst haircut experience ever. Agatha is overated. She gave me a lopsided haircut. The price for a haircut ($35) is ridiculous for a run down place with extremely bad service. She didn't even give me a shampoo before a haircut, she just sprayed some water. I also waited thirty minutes for her because she had forgotten my appointment and was running around between two other customers in the middle of my haircut. Magic Scissors is a very welcoming and great-vibe salon. Victoria, the owner, has been my saving grace after MULTIPLE hair color fails. She is very intuitive and educated me about good hair care, especially hair that has been dyed as much as mine. The hairdresser simply cut a straight line and added 'layers' with another pair of scissors (another 30sec) The hairdresser suggested I go and blow dry my hair because, quote, it will be another $15 if she does it. What a Russian mafia! If zero stars would be possible, this place deserves it. I went there to get my daughter's haircut and ended up with the deceitful Anna. I paid $45 for a 15 year old girl's hair do. On a way out Anna stated that she asked my daughter if she wants a blow dry which by the way is extra $25, instead of asking me - the mother. So the blow dry is more expensive then an actual hair cut itself at $20. I stated that I wasn't made aware of prices and Anna was wrong to just go ahead with my daughter's being not knowledgeable that there is an extra "redicioulous" charge for a 10 minute blow out. Anna replied...." oh well, those are the prices". I demanded to speak with the owner Victoria and Anna claimed she is the one (which is not true). Plus, since we were a first time customers, we should be offered a welcoming special just like their web site advises. Will never return to this terrible place. read more

Let me just say that I really like Agatha. :) I went in for two reasons: (1) I wanted to chop all the wavy/permed parts off so that I could donate it and (2) I was in need of a sleeker, "more mature" 'do for upcoming interviews. She cut off over 10 inches, leaving me with a nice, light chin-length bob with side-swept bangs. She left very soft, gradual layers--nothing too choppy or unmanageable. Agatha said she cut my hair in a way that would let it grow out very "pretty and carefree." That was in early April. It's been over a month, and her words stand true. My hair's a bit longer now, and it still looks very clean and carefree. The layers are still there--very gradual--without adding bulk to my already thick hair. (I have typical bone-straight Asian hair--a lot of it!) I left happy; I'm still happy. :) As all the other reviewers mentioned, Agatha is so personable and really takes care of her customers. Since I'm Korean, I was able to speak with her very easily. She was a riot. She cracked jokes, openly shared about her experiences (don't worry--nothing too personal or uncomfortable), and asked plenty of questions (again, no awkwardness). She speaks English, but I think she's more talkative and less hesitant to say things when speaking in Korean since it's her native tongue. I really appreciated the way she asked me what I wanted in my haircut throughout the entire process; I felt like she evaluated everything I said and coupled it with her own professional eye to give me a great haircut. She made sure the haircut fit my lifestyle, face shape, features, etc. As mentioned in others' reviews, she spends A LOT of time with her clients. I was there for about two hours, but it's because I waited for 30 minutes. (She had another client, but she was running late because she had an important long-distance phone call in the morning.) No problem, though. I'd gladly wait those 30 minutes again because she really makes the rest of the time worthwhile with her special attention and friendliness. She even tied and wrapped up the cut hair so that I could donate it! The haircut was $35, which is a bit more than what I usually pay at other Korean salons ($20-$25), with a $5 tip. But honestly, I didn't mind paying that much for a great quality haircut; I will go back to her again (and again and again for as long as I can). I've gotten so many compliments on my haircut, and I still get compliments! My mom, who is a retired hairstylist, commented on what a good job she did, and that meant a lot since she has pretty high standards. :) Go to her! She's great! :) But just make sure you make an appointment by calling her on her phone, and be sure you schedule during a time when you have at least two hours! I went there to get my roots touched up because I always love having blonde hair, I have Asian hair and when the person I was with bleached my hair, she didn't wash it out completely before applying the toner and my hair broke. It got about 8 inches shorter. I was so amazed with the color I didn't want to complain, I brushed it out and over the past few days my hair got shorter and even shorter. It was down to my hip bone but now it's over my shoulders and I'm having trouble growing it out. I never use heat ever since but I blame this place for it. read more

I had long hair (middle of back) and basically asked her to trim and shape it up. Well now it's just below my chin, different lengths everywhere , (choppy not layered nice), bangs way too short (inch above my eyebrow), and she thinned it out probably by half!! This is by far the worst haircut I have ever received. Have had numerous comments on how bad she cut my hair. On top of that she charged me $35, total rip-off. Beware. I had pretty long hair and I wanted a short cut so I was somewhat nervous about what I would end up with. I brought 2 pictures and verbally described the color. She nailed it! Just got my hair cut on Saturday, and I love it! Agatha did an awesome job. My hair was over 13 inches long (measuring from the neck down). I let her know that I wanted to donate my hair and she knew what to do right away. She cut my ponytail off and wrapped it in paper towels and aluminum foil so I could take it home (I later transferred it to a zip-lock bag. I cut off about 13 inches and asked for a graduated bob--similar to what Victoria Beckham has but with bangs, so I guess sorta like Katie Holmes. I brought a magazine with me and showed her a picture of what I wanted and she gave me exactly that. She did an awesome job. She took her time with me and was very detailed, making sure there werent any stray hairs and what not. Although this was my first time cutting my hair with her, I felt comfortable and at ease when she was working on my hair because I could tell she's very good at what she does. The cost of the haircut was $35, which did surprise me a bit because I read that on other posts that she charged somewhere in the $20 range. Regardless, I'm happy with my hair and the price she charges is comparable to what others in the city charge, if not way less. I will definitely be going back to her when I need another cut. So, if you can get yourself out to Niles from the city or if you live in the surrounding area, I'd highly recommend Agatha. Oh, as others have already noted, you must call her cell phone to set up an appointment.
