Where did this place go? I drove by a few weeks ago and it was gone - vanished! I thought they had a healthy business. Every time I went, people were coming in and out steadily. It was always a nice place: clean, pleasant, and up to date with trends. It seemed to cater to Russian/Eastern European clientele, but they took my pasty Irish face with no problem! The stylist I went to ended up leaving that salon before it closed. I don't know why she left, but I am surprised this place is CLOSED! Does anyone know why? read more

I just came back from a mani-pedi with Sasha and I am very happy. The salon has two full walls of nail polish color to chose from. I purchased a Groupon for a mani/pedi (regular-old fashioned style) I arrived and was pleasantly greeted by owner and front desk staff. My Groupon stated I would book with Anastasia. I was introduced to her and she started my manicure portion right away. She is wonderful at her craft and takes the time to be meticulous and gentle (she was working with nails coming off of 2 years of having powder-dipt nails from another salon and still very short in the growing out process of lumps and uneven growth and splitting.) I have to say I couldn't have been any happier as I watched her transform what I thought was honestly going to be a lost cause. I never thought I'd have my own nails look nice again for a very long time but wanted them "cleaned up" if you will as I continued in this growing out process after removing the product some 3 months ago. She then went on to my pedicure where again did a great job! She helped me pick a light orchid color (I said I wanted something for Spring/Easter and always just usually go with something pink.) I love the change! Many thanks to Anastasia for making me feel pampered and loving my experience getting my mani/pedi from her. I'm soo glad I was booked with her! I'm glad I went. The owner is really rude and Anna cut my hair and she sucks unfortunately she also blow dried it pretty bad I asked for a nice bouncy blow out she rough dried it aggressively and then curled it in 15 minutes and tried to charge me 50 lol then starts calling me rude. I think she's lazy and doesn't want to hurt her wrist blow drying my hair lol she needs to do a normal blow out or retire l. I don't usually write reviews but I loved my experience so much, I have to highly recommend this place! Due to current restrictions, I had not been able to get my usual hair maintenance done. A few days ago, I made an appointment and went to see Anna K for the whole treatment - hair color, highlights and haircut. She was a very engaging lady, very sweet and personable, and really listened to what I wanted - also very efficient which I like because I really dislike spending hours in a hair salon. I absolutely LOVE my hair! Beautiful highlights, great haircut, and I've gotten so many compliments. THANK YOU, ANNA!! The place is new so I felt more comfortable - everything was clean, and she gave me the opportunity to sit outside while waiting for hair color to set so I can breathe fresh air instead of inside with a mask. It was a truly wonderful, thoughtful service. They also have other services (spa, nails, etc) that I am excited to try out. Truth is, I normally cut my own hair, but my girlfriend said only cheap and crazy people do that. She said "I'm taking you with Anna" for which I responded "Whos Anna?" Well she ended up being this European lady that does Magic with her hands! I really don't like getting haircuts and that's why I prefer doing it my self, but Anna made me feel extra comfortable, I told her I want the Cristiano Ronaldo look, she smiled and said "that's perfect for your head"! I know I'm not the greatest looking Mexican and I know she was just trying to make me feel good but, after she was all done, I was a different person. I looked fresh, younger and more professional I'm not gonna lie. People are always asking me where I get my hair cut, so here we go: A Korean lady named Agada rents a chair in this hidden gem of a salon. Not too talkative, but very, very sweet. If you're Asian and nobody on this side of the hemisphere seems to understand your hair texture, book your next cut with Agada. I don't know about the other gals she's got working under her, but her instinct for hair is wonderful. (Hint: if you keep coming back, she's even better.) The salon is also right next to some ethnic restaurants and food marts so if you want to schedule one right around lunch or dinner, it's perfect. As for pricing: I forget the exact price, but it's definitely under forty dollars for shampoo, cut, style, and blow dry. Why should I run over to Chicago to shell out eighty-dollars-plus when I can an equally awesome cut for less than half the price? read more

If you are like me, this usually happens when you are overdue for a trim or perhaps you have been reluctant to get that trim due to a previous BAD haircut. You know the signs. After I booked the appt., I noticed that most reviews mentioned her talent at cutting Asian hair. Now, know that I have the opposite type: very fine hair that, when overgrown, has no body or volume in it. I'll put it in caps: Agatha has MAD HAIRCUTTING SKILLS! After she greeted me (with a hug!), I sat down and gestured helplessly at my lank 'do. "I want more body, some layers," I said. She asked if I wanted to keep the length, and I said just trim it up a bit. With those minimal instructions, she set to work. No shampoo, she just spritzed my hair to wet it, and began cutting in back. Even though I couldn't see, I trusted her. Let me tell you, she was thorough - she went over my head about three times, pulling sections, cutting layers. She works quickly, and when she finished, it was like looking at a new person. I always believe a good stylist will tell you what she or he thinks will look good on you, and that is exactly what Agada does. I have gone to way too many stylists where they look dumbfounded when I asked "What do you think?" The reply is usually some useless comment such as "whatever you like." Agada will tell you what her professional opinion is and ask to see if you like the idea. After seeing her work personally, I now have complete confidence in her craft. My wife found out Agada used to teach hair styling in Korea and ran a beauty shop for years in Morton Grove. She currently rents the space at Magic Scissors and works by appointment. If you just casually walk in you may not catch her, so it is best to call and make an appointment. I'm honestly not sure what all the hype about Agatha is. There are so many rave reviews on Yelp about her, and it really makes me wonder. I made an appointment with her and I was waiting at the salon for 30 minutes to get my hair done. I wouldn't have minded if it meant I would get a great haircut, but that wasn't what I got. What I got was something equivalent to a Great Clips cut for a much heftier price tag. Granted, Agatha was really nice and quite apologetic... hence the extra star. I asked for a wash and wear type of cut with long layers. Pretty simple I thought. I got layers alright, but they definitely were cut much shorter than I asked for. The quality of the haircut wasn't that great either because I looked like a hot mess any time I didn't blow dry my 'do. I basically had to wait half an hour for my appointment for a cut not at all what I asked for, and pay 6 times as much for the same quality I could have gotten at Betty and Nick's. This review is for Agatha - I usually get my hair cut at the salon inside H Mart and although I've had positive experiences there, for some reason I felt I deserved more than a grocery store hair cut. After conducting extensive internet research, I felt that Agatha would be the person to WOW me and sculpt my hair into something fabulous. Agatha immediately told me a variety of reasons why that cut was not meant to be mine that month: it's February, it's too old for me... She told me to come back in a few months when it was warmer and she will give me a shorter hair cut. I said OK to be polite while thinking, "I will never be back!!". After my cut, I talked to a couple friends who had been to Agatha and they had similar experiences - Agatha ruined their hair and/or did not listen to what they want. I should have started my research with them and not these internet reviews! I used to have very smooth, straight hair, but ever since getting my hair cut by Agatha, my hair texture has been very odd and I started to have short hairs sticking up all around my head -- kind of like baby hairs or broken hairs that are very short. It took a long time for my cut to grow out, and when it was time for another hair cut, you can be sure that I went back to H Mart for it. Update: Magic Scissors owner has commented that Agatha is not their employee... But Agatha rents a booth at their salon. My review is clearly labeled for Agatha, so if someone is looking for other Magic Scissors stylists they can easily discount my review. Just read all the other reviews about Agatha, a Korean stylist who rents a space at Magic Scissors in Niles. it's all true. She is really good. I've been to all sorts of stylist and barbers on the west coast, east coast, Asia. Some as cheap as 5 bucks, some that are, well, much, much more expensive. Most of the time i just walk out feeling duped for spending that amount of money. Sure, i have gotten better cuts elsewhere, but Agatha is definitely one of the better ones. and at $15 bucks...she is worth that several times over. Before she even started cutting, she looked at my facial shape, texture of hair, direction of hair, from near and from afar. This seems like such a fundamental step, yet somehow, a process practiced by very few stylist that i have encountered. 45 min later, i walked out feeling triumphant. A few minor negatives--she is too busy. By herself, she was juggling 4 clients at once. Doesn't make for a relaxing experience. She doens't speak much English, so forget any conversation, unless you want to learn Korean. Magic Scissors is situated in a dumpy strip mall 30 min from chicago, frequented by what seems like that whole retirement community in Niles. Not exactly the young hip crowd that some of you may be accustomed to. And most of her clients seem to be Asians. I don't know how she does with non-Asian hair. I almost took off a star for the above. But $15 bucks a GOOD cut? 5 stars! read more

Based on raving reviews from one HS Asian friend and yelp, I sought out the the Korean hair stylist, Agatha and convinced my cousin to also schedule a haircut appointment right after mine. I waited a long time to grow out my short hair to shoulder length hair so I could get a cute Korean star haircut with bangs. I showed her the picture of the haircut that I wanted and she said my forehead is too low for bangs and told me she will give me a good cut. After almost 2 hours of snipping and slicing my hair with a blade/razor, she ended up giving me with a mullet style with many frizzy layers. She proceeded to flat-iron my hair straight and apply styling product. She said I need to flat iron my hair every day because my hair is wavy and thick. I was too scared to give my honest feedback because she seemed like a very persistent lady and will not accept criticism. My cousin was horrified by my hair, but didn't want to say so to preserve my feelings. Instead she cancelled her appointment. Agatha is outdated and slow and I made a mistake of wasting gas to drive from city to the burbs for a bad cut. From what I've experienced and seen, you can get drastically better haircuts for Asian hair at H Mart and in the city for the same price or less. read more

She asked if I was 3:30 and when I said yes, she hugged me! :) When she found out that I was Korean, she was very nice to chat with, even with my broken Korean, but it evened out because of her broken English. haha We even had a good laugh about how similar we are in opposite ways. I live a little far, but she's definitely worth the drive. I would follow her if she were ever to move. I'm VERY particular about my hair and I'm used to the best hair snipping skillz there is (courtesy of my stylist Kurosawa in Tokyo.) I've always been hesitant to get a haircut in America because of bad experiences. It really takes some know-how to cut Asian hair. Now, since my standards are extremely high, Agatha does make the cut, but not quite. It's good enough for a haircut in the U.S. but I'm still pining away for my Japanese stylist. I begged him to pack up and move to America, specifically Chicago, but he laughed and rejected me outright. But, Agatha is honest and she won't give you an unflattering haircut. I did have to wait, like, half an hour for my turn, but she was really apologetic about it and spent quite a bit of time curling my hair. Victoria tends to each of her clients' needs and wants, while implementing her own expertise to create the perfect look. Much to horror of those around me, I had my hair permed by Agada the first time I went to see her. Everyone, including me, loved my wavy hair after that. Now I get haircuts from her every 3 months. I didn't think long layers was a difficult cut, but for some reason, my hair looks better than ever...and it's easier to blow dry. I got a great hair cut but the worst experience in a hair salon, ever. I called Agatha in advance to let her know that I would be 50 minutes late due to heavy traffic. Agatha was nice enough to still keep the appointment for me, but it would have been better if she had just asked me to reschedule my appointment. She was really distracted the whole time. I was there for 2.5 hours (!!!) and she spent a few minutes with me here and there. Most of the time, I was just sitting unattended in the salon with wet hair. In between the start and the end of my haircut, she worked with three other customers: one for haircut, one for perm, and one for styling. She was apologetic but it was really a waste of time for everyone. I got exactly the haircut I wanted, but I prefer not to go back again. The haircut was $35 btw. read more

For those who really care about their looks I recommend the Salon Magic Scissors. I have tried various hair and beauty places, switched few times from one to another because of high prices or unpleasant customer service; there was always something... Magic Scissors was really one of few places that caught my attention and interest. It is one of very few places that serve customers with care and respect. Staff is very friendly and kind, and very professional. Their highly talented staff is always on top of the latest styles, trends, and techniques. I had facial masks and hair treatments done at their salon and I loved it. I also really like that they have other services available besides haircut and hair styling, which is hair and skin treatments, facials and cosmetologist services, nail and eye brow services, massage therapy, various facial and body beauty procedures, and the list goes on. The salon operates 7 days a week and is usually opened late, which very convenient for me personally with my busy schedule. I feel so welcomed every time I visit this place. There have been times when I called to make a last minute appointment and the manager would accommodate me with my busy schedule and always "squeezed me in." Their prices are very generous compared to a lot of other places. I have been very happy with this salon in regards to pricing, customer service, and staff's professionalism and unique talent.
