For a relatively small store they do manage to stock a very large assortment of merchandise. I am always amazed at what they can fit into a small space. My daughter and fiancé visited the store on Monday 07/29. The had a great selection of t-shits and souvenirs. After I walked in, a lady followed behind me with her dog, that was on a leash. You can't see the door form the check out counter. At the check out counter was a guy with long hair who didn't look like he was having a good day. The other two female employees were engaged with customers, checking them out and answering their questions. The guy was not having it. When the lady with the dog asked if it was ok to bring her pet in. He replied "Well you're already in the store", pretty sarcastic toe. She replied, "if it's not ok, I'll take him." He repeated himself rather rudely, "the animal is already in the store." A few minutes later a woman and her family were going to pay for some t shirts. The man walked up to the register, when the guy (not having a good day) looked at the lady and said "no smoking!" I looked over at her, didn't see any smoke in the air but I did see her put something in her purse. My guess, she walked in with a vape and when the guy saw her and made that comment, she put it in the purse. No biggie, right? Wrong! The lady didn't say a word, as the man approached the counter, he snapped again "I said no smoking" then he said "you know what? Get out! Leave!" The man put the shirts on the counter and told the guy that was no way to speak to a paying customer. Giving them 4 stores for the all the cool stuff they had in this store and for the awesome ladies working that day. 0 stars for the guy being rude and disrespectful to customers. read more

I dashed into the Magic Parlor recently to keep a chatty niece and nephew occupied, since most of the cool museums in Salem were closed. As soon as they stepped inside and marveled at the gruesome Halloween masks, magic tricks, gag items, and other assorted oddities, their eyes bugged out like a Chihuahua's and they started squealing with glee. The front of the store features magic tricks, gag items (think candy that turns your mouth blue and fake cat vomit), a wall of wigs in every color imaginable, candy, and a section with enough rubber scars, body parts, and spirit gum to worm your way into any Trekkie's heart. In the back of the store, they have various decks of tarot cards for sale, crystals (like the kind Napoleon Dynamite puts in the time machine that doesn't work.. heh), voo doo dolls, and other future-telling implements. Twenty minutes later, we came out with a fake piece of dog poo, a miniature voo doo doll, Bubble Gum Pop Rocks, and two very satisfied rug rats. Score! Five stars for the Magic Parlor! read more

The shop is brimming with stuff to look at and sometimes a crowd, depending on when you visit. If you want to buy tickets for Spellbound tours, they sell those here as well. As soon as me and my fiancé walked into the store, the store associate was hyper vigilant of us and even continuously surveyed us with the camera. This was not an issue however, the problem was that she was very obvious about her mistrust in us. It made us feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable as she kept popping up behind us in close proximity to check on what we were doing. It was only when we noticed her that she would say "hi, do you need any help?" She would do this over and over again every few minutes even though we had only been in the store for a total of 10 or 11 minutes before leaving. We witnessed her do this to another customer as well and she scared him half out of his wits. Afterwhich he just up and left, she then came back to keep checking in on us. This resulted in my fiancé asking if there was a lot of theft, he asked if we had done something, and told her that if there was a problem that we would leave. She stated there was no problem and she apologized for breathing down our necks. Things were thought to be settled until we went to the cash register and the presumed owner/the cashier was very rude. He made a snide comment about how we took a long twenty minutes to look at his large herbs collection (said to us in sarcasm), which 1) is not true because we were not in that section more than 6 minutes and 2) spending time shopping is not a crime. I was looking for ground Barberry and items of similar properties. My fiancée and I ignored his gripe and then gave him our card, however we were under the minimum for card usage and didn't have cash. So we thanked him for his time and left. I don't recommend going here if this behavior is to be expected. I believe it's possible that he was racially profiling us, because we were well kept and nicely dressed and in our mid-twenties, so there doesn't seem to be any other reason they'd be after us. We're not sketchy. So please be careful when shopping there. read more

Franks is one of the very few places in town that does not inflate prices to take advantage of tourist traffic. You can find all kinds of made in china junk for under a couple bucks as well as cheesy costume wigs, masks, makeup, gadgets, jokes, gags, bumper stickers, funny stuff and even some very nice jewelry and figurines, etc.. and alot of occultish stuff in back too... Staff are nice outgoing people... Oh, and the sexy red haired psychic is HOT too..... she had a nice big smile on her face after reading my mind... Yes there is a ton o tourist traps and kitsch in Salem. But the parlor is a combination of joke shop, toy store, hidden treasure, and standard Salem mish-mish. The thing that sets the parlor above the rest is the staff. When you have a question they really try to help you find the perfect item to fit your needs. They also have a nice collection of old brass skeleton keys. read more

I really like this guy!! He closes at 6 but let people continue to come in anyway (and let me stay for a while). We talked about Anton La Cry's Church of Satan, some of the items in the store, etcetera. The prices for most of the merchandise are pretty low which is always great. I generally go out into nature and get my own items. I was very pleased to find the hard to get items here. This is a fun store. They have a wide variety of "magic trick" items in the front of the store and in the back of the store they have an array of informational pagan books and spellwork materials for the more serious wiccan practioner. The also carry some very interesting figurines (faeries, dragons, Egyptian art, etc.). I believe they do readings in the back room. The owner and staff are very helpful and friendly. Ask for a catalogue because it has far more items then they carry in the store. read more

This is a rather iconic store in Salem. It is also one of those old-fashioned independent stores that one used to see in urban centers, akin to the now defunct Jack's Joke Shop that was near the Boston theater district. That store played up the jokes. This one has so many different types of things in there, from Salem souvenirs to stage makeup, to masks, clothing, magic tricks (some pretty high level ones to beginner ones) to, yes, jokes. There is also usually someone there who gives readings with such devices as Tarot Cards. In Halloween season, there is almost always a line out the door. And during the Halloween season, there are professional makeup artists who will give you pretty much any special effects makeup you ask for (I am a professional film actor in the area and I have worked with them on those projects, so I can attest that they're used on the highest levels.) The staff is friendly and go out of their way to help you. If you're visiting Salem, make sure to stop in this shop and check it out. read more

Great place. Your typical great joke shop that is hard to find these days. Only complaint is that you will constantly have eyes watching you because the couple who own it are very paranoid when it comes to theft. Good Good Good vibrations!! You know when you enter the Magic Parlor, you've come upon a rare find. The groovy couple that run this piece of coolness in Salem is to commended for their super personalities and helpful attitudes. I shop here for oils (Nag Champa of course) and several other things. Have bought a silver Yin and Yang pendant from the Parlor that I just love and they were so cool to make me the necklace to go with it. I had fun at Magic Parlor. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the owner is pretty gruff (with both a few customers and the staff) and the store is really crowded. Otherwise, it was fun to browse the large selection of goods they have for sale. I had Theresa read my cards, which was spot on (and she was super nice!), and I had a henna tattoo painted up my arm (only took about 5 mintues) that turned out beautifully!
