I had seen several social media posts about Maggie's so we decided to give them a try for lunch on a weekday. They not only make sandwiches here, they also make their own sodas too. Their menu was quite large, with hot dogs, cold subs, hot sandwiches, and paninis listed. They also feature a couple soups daily. When we went, they had a loaded baked potato soup and a lobster bisque. The young girl working the front was very happy and helpful and gave some good suggestions too. The place is quaint, with several tables and lots of historic signs on the walls. We started with their baked potato soup - The overall flavor was nice. But the potatoes in it were rubbery, like they used the wrong type of potato or maybe over-cooked it. Also, the soup was just warm, far from being served hot. Next up were the sandwiches - I chose the BBQ chicken sandwich, which had thinly sliced chicken breast on it, along with BBQ sauce, mayo, and onions. The sandwich was pressed, like a panini and was pretty good. I liked the smokiness of the BBQ sauce. I also got a bottle of their homemade root beer and it was pretty good. They serve Route 11 potato chips, which are my favs! So, I had to pick up a bag of Mama Zuma for later - those things are spicey, hot, and tasty! This is the first time we have been here and it did not disappoint. The inside is decorated in classic Fredericksburg and is a great place to eat and look at all the decorations. The staff were patient, we took our time to look at the menu. I took photos of the menu right below. The meatball sub is excellent. The meatball tasted like they were made fresh and the bun was delicious too. My son ordered the number 15 which he liked very much. So far this is a great sub shop to visit and we will come back again. This shop was downtown but I see they have one by Ollies in Spotsylvania, which we will try that one next. read more

I finally dropped in and couldn't have been happier I finally tried Maggie's! After asking the cashier what she recommended, I went with their #1, which is basically an Italian, though they have another sandwich (the "51st") that has additional meats on it. The bread was SO FRESH! So much so that I want to know where they get their bread from. The hoagie was just right: lettuce, tomato, oil and spices, and mayo. This would have been a 5/5 but need to give 4 stars because the bread was just way too soggy. I opened it right when I got in store and usually it will get soggy after a while when you order it to go, but for the bread to be as wet and soggy as it was when I just got the sandwich was a bummer. The high rating is for the insane amount of meat in this sandwich. For the same price as say Potbelly/ Jersey Mike's, the amount of Italian meats in this sandwich compared to others was definitely worth the price of $10.50. Overall flavorful I would just ask for the Italian dressing on the side next to avoid the wet bread. Service was fast and restaurant decor fit the vibe. I have been before and it was amazing but went over the weekend about 30 minutes before closing and everything was already closed down other than some drinks in their cooler. I would recommend this to someone who wanted to grab lunch of the middle of the day because they do have great stuff but it's really disappointing when businesses have business hours but they close before they're actually closed - especially when it's a sandwich shop, not a bar, and isn't open nearly as late. read more

Stopped in for lunch before catching the train. Enjoyed my Italian panini and took half of it with me to finish on my trip. Nicely wrapped in foil, which kept it warm. Took a trip down to Maggie's this afternoon with my Pookie. Was swept off my feet by the exquisite customer service, the homemade cream soda, and the menu options. Staff was oh so welcoming as soon as we walked through the door. Not only that, I can't believe how clean and classy the Maggies was-can we get a round of applause for the decor please I am looking forward to making a trip back down to FBURG soon, we are so sad to have missed, Ben. Cute, little sandwich shop on the main drag in Fredericksburg but still hard to find as the oversized window displays do not scream sandwiches but rather look like an appliance store (I truly thought they sold vacuums or something and kept walking a couple blocks before double-checking the address on google, and my wife and her mother, who were meeting me there, comically missed the place too as she thought there was no way it was a food establishment...ha). Ok, on to the sandwiches. They were tasty -- we tried the 51st NY (standard Italian sub with double meat...not world-changing, but scratched an itch), the Tech (basically Thanksgiving on an easy-sliding kaiser roll), and a honey ham/provolone (again, standard procedure sandwich). The differentiating factor for Maggie's from other sub shops was the absurdly amazing assortment of chip options (possibly the best variety I've ever seen) and the fresh ginger ale and cream soda made on-site and poured on draft! If you are in a rush to grab lunch in town (as a lot of the sit-down places have a wait), this would be a great spot to choose. read more

Stopped in here the morning after a wedding to grab a sandwich. Was kindly greeted by Lily at the counter who walked me through the menu. I was on the fence on whether to order the root beer or cream soda which they brew in-house. Lily recommended the root beer but was happy to offer me a taste of BOTH! She was right, the cream soda was good, but the root beer is outstanding. I paired with it the #15 hot, which is their take on caprese sandwich. The flavors were fantastic and the sandwich was toasted and melted perfectly. They also serve the balsamic on the side - a nice touch. Maggie's also has an amazing assortment of chip options. Okay, so i visited here in their first month, so hopefully things have gotten better. When we walked in there was just a big clusterf*** of people in a mob near the counter. We asked the girl behind the register where the line started or at lest where it should start and she said she had no idea. I do feel like a an employee you need to take it took you make it and take charge in some way so people think you know what you're talking about. Anyways, let's move on to seating. There's what like one table inside in a hallway by the bathroom and it was occupied by someone wheelchair so we couldn't sit there. We went out to the garden and it was majestic! The cutest outdoor seating area, ever! I actually loved that! My sandwich, i can't recall the name, but it was good. Not mind blowing, but decent. It came with turkey, cheese, mayo and cranberry relish. I love all things tart, but the amount of cranberry relish was offending! As well as the amount of mayo. I appreciate not skimping on the ingredients, but good lord do i need to have a heart attack at this age?? The sando was pretty decent, biggest gripe was the disorganization. The restaurant appeared to be pretty clean looking, so that's a big plus, as well. I would probably come back, but sunbelt will be sure to say to put the condiments on the side! read more

Great daily specials, lovely courtyard for dining, very nice counter service. We had 2 of the daily soup specials (tomato and potato). Also had an assortment of sandwiches. Husband and I had lunch on Saturday at Maggie's. Maggie's is in old town Fredericksburg in a historic district. I had seen information about it somewhere and checked out their web page. We decided to give it a chance. The web page was very focused on the stuff in the shop. I guess it fits in an historic district. But we were all about the food. Stepping inside, it appears to be take out only. The main room is dominated with a counter and drink cold boxes. There is a long hallway that leads back to the one table inside (and the bathrooms) and then to the outside seating area. The outside seating area is fresh and newly done. It is peaceful and was very beautiful. The surrounding buildings created a wind break so we were not wind blown even though it was a windy day. The menu is straight forward and maybe some would describe as limited. But we found sandwiches that appealed to both of us. Husband had The Hayscale and I had The 51st NY. Husband loves pastrami and this was highly rated by him. Also the marble rye bread was spot on. He also had the NE Clam Chowder which he was very pleased with. My 51st NY was good. It was messy - lots of dressing on the toppings. Instead of lettuce, it was topped with almost a lettuce salad/coleslaw. It was quite tasty but was sloppy. If I were heading back to work, I would have been quite nervous. But I wasn't so I enjoyed the half I could eat. All in all, lots of good food and a pretty environment. We will be back. This was my second time having Maggie's. As a Fredericksburg native I loved some of the decor and its ties to the city. Me and my SO got a cream soda and a ginger ale which are both brewed in house we also got a Reuben type dish that was wonderful and ate it in the back patio which is very peaceful. What is your standard for a good sandwich? I was on the fence from the start as they don't have Boar's Head cold cuts but I figured I'd give Maggie's a try. It's a good looking spot and the girl behind the counter was polite and friendly. Ordered the #3 (mortadella, pepper ham, capicola, provolone). Bag was a tad light for an $8.50 sub but it's Virginia so I wasn't surprised. Not really a sub, more of a hoagie in construction and type of roll. Probably the best they could do in terms of flavor given the second rate Dietz and Watson cold cuts. Meat was cut way too thick and the meat ratio seemed to be 1:1:1 so there was no real standout. Typically on a hoagie like this I'd expect mortadella or pepper ham to be the bulk of the meat and the capicola to add that little something extra but since all the meat had the same flavor I guess it didn't matter. Couldn't discern the taste or texture of any provolone. I ordered the sub with L,T,O. Seemed to be mostly lettuce (and not much of it) dressed with a little Italian dressing. Bland, didn't add anything. Not sure if there were any onions other than a paper thin strip of red onion about 1.5 inches long. Tomato was a real disappointment. Super thin (like maybe thinner than the cold cuts thin). If you feel like you need to skimp on tomato to make some $ maybe just grow your own? Bread was fine. Fresh. Ok flavor. Probably for the best as a better roll would have stood out and overshadowed the rest of the hoagie. Overall, it's a no for me. I may hit it up Maggie's again for a hot dog at some point. For ppl who aren't from NY or Philly it's probably good enough. Also, there's an unnecessary apostrophe on the chalkboard out front. Combo's. I always struggle to find a place to eat in Fredericksburg but Maggie's is a really solid option. It's a sandwich shop that also has hot dogs and draft root beer. They use Dietz & Watson cold cuts and Nathan's dogs so decent quality. The place is really, really clean and they have a really beautiful outside eating area. Tried Maggie's for the first time today and had a great experience. I ordered a Bromo to-go which was fairly priced at $9.46 after tax. The red onion and sauces (Tiger is horseradish based and the BBQ is sweet and tangy) were perfect compliments to inch-thick stack of roast beef. A sandwich like this doesn't need much else, however, I added pickles at home. I might even ask for extra onions and sauce next time. I was also offered samples of the craft root beer and the cream soda. They are not very sweet, but have good flavor and are very refreshing. I appreciate downtown restaurants with small menus. Next time I will probably try one of their soups and another special sandwich. The patio was chill and will likely be popular on a hot summer day. I can see Maggie's being a Fredericksburg staple much like Carl's or Benny's. read more
