My husband and I still talk about the meal. We stayed at little Airbnb on the North side of the island and got very lucky with our hosts. They have lived on the island for 20+ years and were more than happy to send us in all the right directions. They actually made this reservation for us with the owners when we said we couldn't get one. The view for one is worth just coming for that. It is a little off the beaten path and the parking can be a little tricky but do not that let deter you. There is not a bad view in the whole restaurant. If you are there for sunset it is magic. The cocktail shrimp was some of the best we had on the island during our stay. The blackened Salmon was crispy on the outside and perfectly fresh and not even a little overdone. The mashed potatoes that came with the Surf & Turf are worth just getting a second portion of. We finished it all with the key lime pie which was amazing. My main recommendation is to arrange yourself so you can see out on the bay (vs into the mountain). We were sitting by a beam and it was not easy for me to turn and see the amazing sunset behind me. Made a reservation weeks ago and confirmed, but they had no record of it so we got sat right next to the loud bar where all the wait staff needed to be in and out of. Garlic bread was awful. Mafolie is a hidden gem in St Thomas. I stumbled upon it on a drive to Magens bay and am glad I did. Went there to enjoy my last night with a nice dinner. The view here does not disappoint. Greeted by two lovely hosts when I walked in and could probably tell I was a bit shaken. I made a wrong turn and ended in the wrong neighborhood. I chose to sit at the bar because I was dining solo. Bartender J, was so kind and very good at his craft making me a rum tamarind drink. I started with a crisp mango avocado salad. The dressing was so delicious topped with carrots, avocado and fresh mango. It was listed with starfruit but none came on the salad. My entree I chose a seafood linguine do not order if you are watching your figure because it contains lots of butter. The dish lacked a bit of seasoning though the seafood was very fresh. I had to doctor it with a bit of salt and pepper. It's listed with fresh basil and tomato. No basil was present and only about 3 diced tomatoes in it. Pricing was a bit high for lack of ingredients. However the service and views made up for this. All patrons dishes around me looked good as well. Give it a try if you are on the island . Join J at the bar and have him make a nice cocktail. read more

Eh. This moves above one star only because the view is spectacular. The food is average, at best, and the service is below par. Maybe we mistook the previous reviews for thinking that, 10 years after a previously good dining experience here, that the consistency had remained. This is clearly not the case, and instead of quality experience, you're left with hit or miss in every aspect of the evening meal. We ordered a shrimp cocktail and a salad to start, and while they were both adequate, neither stood out, and both had serious negative aspects (croutons on salad were too large to be bit sized, and not stale enough to crush into smaller pieces; shrimp cocktail was served with an odd seaweed salad on top of the sauce and shrimps, with a very unappetizing visual presentation). Our mains were no better, with both dishes served smothered by sauce that is not listed on the menu for either the fish or the steak. Nothing ruins an experience like protein drowned in unexpected slop. Not to mention whatever cut of meat they were trying to pass off for a ribeye steak. It was a pile of steak trimmings that may have only been held together by the grill marks. Our server was polite enough, but never once took our comments about the average food to mean that anything should be corrected, finished our meal by asking if we wanted a dessert from a menu that looked like it was printed in the 1990s and offering selections from your grocery store freezer. In no world does your vacation or trip to St. Thomas need a meal at Mafolie until the kitchen staff is entirely overhauled. read more

On my first visit to Mafolie, I would have given this restaurant 5 stars, but on my return visit this past week, I would actually lower that rating to 4, and I'll explain why of course in just a bit. First, I just want to say that the view is really what makes this restaurant spectacular. At 550 feet about sea level (I was a bit of a geek and looked to figure this out), Mafolie offers a stellar view of Charlotte Amalie (just look through the pictures for yourself and you'll see). Especially during sunset, this view is enchanting! And since the restaurant is covered but not completely indoors, you get a wonderful ocean breeze. It's a really fantastic experience, especially if you can get a table right along the railing! So why only 4 stars? I have to kick off a star because of the service here. It took about 20 minutes for someone to come take our order, and our waiter was missing for much of the evening (and in many cases did not seem all that happy to be there). I usually wouldn't kick off a star just for one waiter (everybody has a bad day now and then and one person can't really make or break a place), but even on the previous visit I never felt the service was exceptional. That being said, the view and the food here really make up for that fact! And boy is the food delicious. On this visit, my wife and I split the snapper and a chocolate cake for dessert. The snapper was incredibly fresh and served with some fresh veggies (zucchini, squash, carrots and broccoli). The chocolate cake was also terrific, especially for chocoholics like myself. Considering the ambiance and the quality of the food, prices here are not bad either. I'd definitely say the value is there. In short, you should definitely come to Mafolie for the view and the food (or even just a drink, since the bar offers an amazing view as well). Just go in knowing that the service might not be perfect and you'll really enjoy your experience here! read more

Apparently they care so little about their patrons and reservations that they will cancel your reservation an hour beforehand without even a courtesy call. And when you happen to check OpenTable to confirm the time, your reservation is just gone...even better...when you call the restaurant to find out what happened, they'll lie to you and tell you they are closed, even when you can hear people in the background...when you ask about the noise in the background, they'll tell you they don't have enough food to serve everyone and they had to randomly cancel reservations an hour beforehand. By far the best restaurant we've found on the island so far. Food: 2x flank steak with mashed potatoes and veggies. Steak was tender and juicy, served with a bit of bbq sauce. I am inbetween 3 and 4 stars. I was less than impressed, but I still recommend going. The customer service from the front of the house to the manager was warm and friendly except from our server. The food seemed hit or miss. The ambience, view, and hotel are worth it! Our server seemed confused by my orders which were straightforward off the menu. He said they were out of the first 4 things I ordered, which I am sure frustrated him more than it did me. I was surprised, but didn't care. My peanut punch with chocolate liqueur was out of this world, and I am craving it right now! My boyfriend enjoyed his meal of potfish (snapper), but my coconut shrimp was just shrimp tempura because they were out of coconut, but it was the fourth time he had to tell me they were out of what I wanted, so I think he just asked the chef to improvise. It was good quality shrimp, but bland. I still would return if I ever had the chance. The view was breathtaking and the hotel is beautiful. I hope you try it! Amazing place to dine. The restaurant is just unique for it's location, food and service. The first thing you notice, after winding your way along different paths to the restaurant, is the view. Hey, if you want to believe the 2 or 3 poor reviews, just stop by to see the view. Staff shouldn't mind. Good selection of wines and beers, plus there's a cozy bar in one corner. You could easily relax, get lost with your partner and drink the night away. The meal was delicious (again, disregard the few negative reviews here). I had snapper with a perfect almond crust, topped by plentiful toasted almonds. On the side of the fish was a large, coconut crusted butterfly shrimp. Delicious! Oh, I liked the plate presentation, too. A boxed serving of rice, bright green broccoli and purple cabbage completed the meal. Service was perfect. No rushing. Just courteous, prompt attention. When we arrived, only a few tables were seated, so not sure why we had to make later reservations. Good service, great food, and a wonderful view. We loved the Mahi and Caribbean Lobster dishes that we ordered. Reasonably priced considering the quality and the location of the restaurant. The spicy tuna was well named, be sure you can handle it before ordering. Blended cocktails were strong and not overly sweet. Key lime pie was our favorite dessert. View is astounding. But!!.... my experience since I called to make a reservation, was the worst. I called early Monday, to make a reservation because I was just staying for 1 night in St Thomas. I asked them if they had any available tables and the lady told me i just had to go and thats it. When I got there, from 30 tables aprox, just 3 or 4 were occupied, and next to the balcony, just two tables. I asked if i could sit in any of them, and the lady in the reception with a bad attitude told me I couldnt, because it was just me. That I had to sit in the bar area. I told her I wanted a table because I do not drink and I wanted to enjoy the view. He told me that it wasnt possible. So I asked to speak with the manager and she didnt want to speak with me. I wasn't asking for much. I was there for an hour and nobody came to sit in any of those tables, which by the way , had 2 chairs . Then, again, the lady came with her bad attitude and gave me a table that did not had a view. I wasnt in a mood for arguing so I took the table and the food made my visit better. But if you are providing a service, try to do it the beat way! Everyone nowadays is looking for a nice experience! And with the lady that I had to deal in the reception, believe me ! The view at night from Mafolie's of the entire island is amazing and was worth the taxi trip from our resort. The employees at the restaurant were friendly and gave us top notch recommendations on food and dessert options. If you decide to dine here I highly recommend the sweet potato crab cake as an appetizer, the Coconut Snapper as an entree and the raspberry cheesecake for dessert. read more

3.5 STARS We came here for the last night of Calypso to see the fireworks display. The view from Mafolie's open-air bar area is spectacular. From our mountain-high vantage point, we could see all the bright city lights and tiny people bustling beneath us. The rest of our experience was just OK. It took about 30 minutes to get noticed by the waitstaff. And when our server did show up, the service was pretty slow. That said, he was very friendly and got our orders right. We started with a Voodoo Punch and a Mafolie Painkiller (both good, but could have been stronger). Then, we ordered the Caribbean Conch Fritters appetizer, but felt that they were sort of bland and overcooked. For our main course, we had the Spicy Seared Tuna and the Coconut Snapper. Both fish were cooked well, and featured strong Caribbean flavors, but did not WOW us. For the price (which is more $$$ than $$), we just expected better. read more

The only positive about Mafolie is the view. Their menu is ridiculously expensive. Example: pasta is more expensive that pasta and meatballs! Really?
