We found Miss Lucy's totally by chance one day when we missed a turn while driving on St. John, and I'm SO glad we did! The food is nothing short of spectacular, the venue is right on the water with a really nice ambiance, and the drinks are totally on the money :-) We actually visited here twice during our stay. The first time around we shared an exceptional Mahi-Mahi sandwich, and started off with a wonderfully delicious soup. On our 2nd visit we shared crab soup and the grouper Reuben, which was a veritable thing of beauty! I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed the food here. Over and above the amazing food, the service was spot-on, and I think I'm in love with their "painkiller" - it's a mixed drink that goes down super smooth and then turns around to kick like a Mule. St. John is a beautiful Island, and I have no doubt that when I return, I'll find my way back to Miss Lucy's as well. read more

Miss Lucy's shows up on many people's "must see" lists for St. John. We went on Thursday night, which is "Open Mic Night," and I got to play keyboard with the excellent house band! A great evening. We spent the late morning and afternoon at Saltpond/Ram Head, which meant we were already on the Coral Bay side of the island, where Miss Lucy's is. The VITRAN bus picked us up at Saltpond, and kindly dropped us off at Miss Lucy's a bit before dinnertime. The VITRAN bus is a great option, if you can make it work in your schedule, but be sure to check when they're coming. (The website schedule has almost nothing to do with the actual schedule!) We were glad we had some OFF insect repellant lotion, as were a few other people who asked to use some of ours! The band was setting up, and new members kept coming, even after the evening started. Apparently, the chef hadn't shown up yet, but they took food orders, served drinks, and the music got going pretty close to on schedule, 5:30 pm. It was a great evening! Lots of folks--singles, couples, families--and everyone was into the music. Lauren and Bo Magnie (and their wonderful kids) really make it happen, along with a large cast of friends. The music ranged from reggae to folk to jazz to rockabilly, with lots of folks stepping in for a few numbers. Someone was making balloon animals, someone else was blowing bubbles. There was lots of dancing, and people jumping in with the band. There was even a guy playing spoons. The food came out incredibly LATE, like over an hour after we ordered it. But to be honest, no one cared very much. Everyone was having a blast, dancing, singing, and playing under the colored lights on a beautiful St. John evening. The place was packed. Oh, back to the food! We had fried plantains, and kallaloo and crab soup. Presentation was super informal, but the flavor was off the charts "top shelf!" It could've been something we got at a fancy place. So good. One thing: if you're relying on taxis, make arrangements beforehand. We got stranded, there was no cell service, and the restaurant wifi was down. So we bummed a ride (thank you, new friend!) until we got into cell range, then called our favorite taxi driver for the ride home. But this just added to the wonderful adventure of Open Mic Night at Miss Lucy's. Don't miss it! read more

Husband and I decided to make the trek out to Miss. Lucy's since I was looking for the best conch fritters on the island. I have a fond memory of tasting conche fritters for the first time, on St. John and although I anticipated that the location I first had them is long gone (30 years ago), I still was determined to relive the experience and the ones here are delicious. The view is very nice. Especially on Thursday night when they are open late and have live music. Even though it is open mike night, there was some very good talent. And the back up band was very good. The service was rude. We were standing in line to get a drink. The person in front of us was done and passing us in the line. We put one foot up on the step to the bar. She told us to step down. We took our one foot off the step. She then paused and said ok next. We then stepped up to the bar to get our drinks. (She told us that was needed so the food server could get by. There were none in sight. ) I asked what beers to they have. She just gave me a frustrated look and said what do you want. We had a wonderful lunch at Miss Lucy's yesterday with an amazing Oceanside view and a visit from St. John's wild donkeys. The conch fritters appetizer was delightful. The ox tail and fried plantain special was tasty. I think they were low on staff which made for a slow truly relaxing Island dining experience. We have been to Miss Lucy's many times. Quick summary: Excellent food, drinks, and a beautiful view. Miss Lucy's is a casual restaurant and bar on the east end of St. John. Went there on a Thursday night for open-mic night. It was pretty full with limited parking. A long line for the bar. We were surprised at the food after reading better reviews, as the portions were small and mostly fried. I ended up ordering almost one of everything on the menu because I was still hungry. Maybe this is just indicative of the open-mic Thursday night venue, but we were disappointed. This restaurant is on the far end of St John. You will need a car to get there. It is a really nice spot to grab lunch after the beach. Their cocktails are delicious. You sit outdoors under trees overlooking Coral Bay and Tortola Island (BVI). Our food was tasty (Conch Fritters, Sweet Plantains, Grouper Rubens, Grilled Cheese and Chicken Tenders). They were already running out of food by the time we got there (2 hours before they close) which was disappointing but understandable given the current pandemic situation. It must be hard to tell how many customers they might get in any given day. I wanted to try the conch chowder but unfortunately they ran out of it. Nonetheless what we ordered was really good. This is pretty much the only restaurant open on the east side of St. John because of recent COVID problems, but thank GOD it was open because we were starving. They serve really good local food here, and have a wonderful outside seating area right next to the water. Food took a while to serve, but it's a busy spot. Crunchy Grouper Sandwich: The grouper here is super fresh, and I love how thick the slice of fish is and it is definitely crunchy! Not too oily either. We came here during the day and surprisingly were able to find a good table (it can get very busy). The view is great, the atmosphere very local, and there is plenty of room for kids to run wild a bit (if necessary). There are farm animals to watch and I got some great pictures of iguanas. The menu varies a bit from day to day and they do run out of certain food items towards the late afternoon. As a gluten free individual, I was able to get a burger (with no bun) - I know, I wasn't feeling very adventurous - this was just ok. What a delight. There wasn't anything not to like about this local institution located far from the tourist hordes out past coral bay. We made a reservation for 6:30 and arrived a bit early and were given a choice table right next to the bay under a large tree. The area is lit with soft colored lights making for a beautiful setting as the light faded away with the sunset. The menu is limited yet overflowing with tempting choices with seafood being the primary focal point. We started with conch fritters (succulent round balls with a golden crust and a little bit of zing-if you like crab cakes you need to try these-yum!). We also got 4 johnny cakes, 1 for each of us-soft doughy pillows, similar to a beignet that you eat by first dipping in melted butter then in honey-so good. For entrees we enjoyed the avocado snapper with shrimp and crab and the coconut grouper,two of the most popular dishes on the menu and both excellent. They've got a great drink menu with very reasonable drink prices. Service is on the leisurely side but hey, you are sitting outside on a beautiful night by the sea. This used to be an anticipated experience in years past but no longer. The only nice thing I can say is that it's great to have a meal near the bay and it's funny to watch the chickens and goats mill around. That said, an hour to get a drink on a less than busy afternoon is unacceptable. Requests for water were also slow. I ordered the crunchy fish sandwich and found it flavorless (although the fries were quite good). The burger wasn't a favorite in our group. I can understand if the place is busy and understaffed, but our experience was quite the opposite. Staff were mostly lounging around. I saw a couple of groups end up walking out. Man, I so wish I could leave a better review for this place. But I can't. The server was such an asshole that she ruined our entire experience. in short, we honestly felt blatantly discriminated against and treated like shit the entire time. Our portions were very small, much smaller than all the other tables, we were not taken care of at all, we were ignored, and we were treated like shit. And that should never be allowed in general, but especially not on vacation, and ESPECIALLY not from one person of color to another. AND IN FRONT OF THEIR WIFE AND KIDS WHO ARE ALSO OF COLOR. I mean shit, I'm Puerto Rican and my wife is Jamaican. So first off, St John is very small. When you arrive in Cruise Bay, there are several restaurants and places to eat but they are expensive and they all end breakfast at 11:00 a.m. and many do not serve food between 11:00 and 12:00 as they switch to lunch. We took the 10:30 a.m. ferry and originally planned to eat at Uncle Joe's and Cruz Bay but when we got there they told us it would be an hour before they had any food ready as they had run out of gas and needed to go buy more before they could cook anything. so, we decided to drive spontaneously across the island to this restaurant Miss Lucy's because it would take us until noon to get there which is when they opened and it looked beautiful. We got there at 12:15 and it was completely empty except for a black mother with her two children. We sat ourselves, told the waitress how hungry we were, and asked for some menus. mind you, we had been up since very early so we could make that fairy and we had not eaten at all for the day yet. We were given a menu and we were given drinks and we gave our order and that's when everything started going sideways. Over the course of the next 10 minutes, the black woman and her children were fed and the restaurant filled up with white families. By around 12:45, every single table was full in the entire restaurant with white people, we had not been checked on again, we had not been given any food, our drinks were finished, and we were ignored entirely. then our food came, and it really wasn't impressive... Incredibly small portions, but beyond that, they just really weren't that tasty. They were well cooked but the seasoning was weak and the food was just okay. The rice and peas sucked and the coconut shrimp were just fried up shrimp. The fried plantain appetizer was four tiny little pieces of plantain with a little bit of sauce. We were never offered a second round of drinks. no one ever cleared any of our plates, and we watched as the waitress went to the black family and all the white families and repeatedly took care of them and repeatedly avoided eye contact with us and literally ignored us over and over and over again. after about 30 more minutes, I had to physically stop the waitress and ask her to give us the check so we could pay we had a very tight schedule and needed to make it to our next appointment so we could make the ferry ride back in a few hours. She ignored me. so I walked over to the bar instead there and asked for the check and tried to give her my credit card to pay to which she simply said no. then she stood there in front of me waiting for the cook to make food for two other tables which she put on two platters very slowly as the plates came out... Again I simply said, can you please run my credit card while you are doing that. This continued for a while during which time several other things happened that I don't want to go into which made it clear that the service there really sucked and that the people working there are not the nicest, and as a tourist or human being, there's really no point in accepting it because they really have no basis for acting like dick heads. Other than that, the location is simply very pretty (just like the rest of St John)... But don't go in the water as it's filled with sharp rocks and sea urchins. The food is fresh but it's not the best in terms of seasoning and the portions are horrible. The prices are the same as you'd find throughout St Thomas and St john, but again, the portions are smaller and the quality of the food is generally higher (meaning fresher) while The taste is lacking slightly. Quite a convoluted experience, capped off by a fucked up waitress. oh, and hella shoutouts to the daughter of the owner who is the cutest little girl, who maintained a small box fort in the back of the restaurant, and who played with my daughter the entire time. What a sweetheart. Lastly, the drinks suck... Don't order them... What I would do is drive to this restaurant, park my car in the parking lot, take a walk all around the peninsula and enjoy the view, use the bathroom, and then get back in my car and leave to go eat and relax someplace else...
