Sláinte! Being from the Irish capital of the US (Boston), I can confirm this establishment feels legit and reminds me of many Irish pubs back home! My husband and I came in for dinner and sat at the bar. If you're a fan of Guinness, this is the place for you!! I've never seen such a (huge) menu of "layered" Guinness beers! Anyways, I ordered the Fisherman's pie for dinner and it was fantastic; the ultimate comfort meal and I licked the bowl clean! My only complaint is I wish the portion size was bigger since it was that good! Definitely check this place out :) read more

My daughter took me to Madra Rua for my birthday today bc I wanted a good Reuben sandwich. They did not disappoint! They make their own corned beef so it's actual corned beef and not like sliced corn beef from a deli. We had fried pickles as an appetizer and they were good, just your basic fried pickles, we enjoyed them. My daughter got 6 mild buffalo wings & a prime rib sandwich. She said both were good. She said the wings were good but it's hard to mess up buffalo wings. She really enjoyed the prime rib sandwich and I took a bite of it and it was very good. The meat was tender and the roll was fresh. I had my Reuben and it was delicious!! I'm always willing to try a Reuben wherever I go. I've had theirs before and it didn't disappoint today. A lot of places don't grill the sandwich and that is sacrilegious in my book. It was melty and toasted with the right amount of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut & 1000 island dressing. Their fries are also really good, even my daughter commented on how good they were. They're crispy yet soft inside & seasoned just right. Kiera was the bartender and the server and she was great!! She was on top of everything. She made a great Moscow mule & we liked how she checked on us just the right amount of times. My daughter is a server and she said she really liked how she knew when to come check to see if we needed anything but not so much that it was annoying. We had a nice chat with her and really enjoyed her attitude. She's an asset to the pub. I enjoy coming to the pub I just don't get over to that part of Summerville very often, I live on the 61 side of Summerville. But when I want a great Reuben again I'll be making the trip across town. read more

Not good....Fish and chips were overcooked and fish had a strange texture almost like they used salt cod or really poor quality cod for the fish. Chips were ok.... Pretzel was nothing to write home about, it was deep fried for some reason. Cesar salad with grilled chicken was probably the highlight of the meal for our group. Service was great but the place was virtually empty which should have been a sign. It is also incredibly dark in this restaurant/pub. Really there are other options nearby for much better fish and chips and salads. read more

The beer was delicious, the bartender friendly. The cornbeef "rolls" were good so was the cornbeef and mashed potatoes, the cabbage lacked any flavor it was just boiled. My wife and I visited this established based upon the recommendations of a number of associates. The restaurant has a limited exposure to the main road so if it's your initial visit, you may drive right by it (we did). Upon entering , the facility is well appointed, clean and a classic Irish Pub/Restaurant. We sat at the bar and surprisingly, we were the only people in the place (3:45). Being the only people at the bar, it was surprising to us was that the bartender was quite aloof and unfriendly. After getting us a drink, she would leave the bar area for an extended time and could be heard, not seen, chatting and laughing with the staff while out of our site. When she did return to check on our woeful existence, she did't know the prices or specials or have a handle on the menu. Fortunately, it was the end of her shift and a gentleman took over for this unidentified bartender for the remainder of happy hour. Much to our dismay, the new bartender, who also remained nameless, was polite, but was just as aloof as the first. He also did the same disappearing act, laughing and talking it up in the back room while we waited and waited. When you dine at a bar or restaurant, like the theme song from that iconic television show Cheers, Sometimes you wanna go Where everybody knows your name And they're always glad you came You wanna be where you can see (ah-ah) Our troubles are all the same (ah-ah) You wanna be where everybody knows your name This was not the situation here. No one wanted to know our name or provide a modicum of service. Not good. Now to the meal. For an appetizer we had the Irish Nachos, which are covered with Shepherds Pie. This was an uneven experience as the "nachos" were actually potato chips and there was a paucity of Shepherds Pie in the mix. For our entree I ordered the Black and Blue burger with a side of fries. I was told the blue cheese would be melted on the burger and it wasn't, so I just had to scrape the cheese off my burger. The fries were soggy and tasteless and it looked like they haven't changed their frying oil in weeks. #NotGood I exchanged the fries and got their mashed potatoes, which were good. My wife ordered the Monday special of three tacos. She enjoyed the tacos but was disappointed with the service as it took forever to get our food. Service and feeling like a welcome guest are a huge factor in enjoying a restaurant. Unfortunately, this was not the case with the Madra Rua Irish Pub. So we left, not knowing the bartender's name, a feeling of not belonging and spending a lot of time for zero enjoyment. We expected more and are very disappointed. Nuff said. read more

Husband had raved about the wings while there for a business meeting so we went back to share them and have some drinks. The wings were good but we felt like an inconvenience during our visit. We had heard about happy hour and asked about it but wasn't given any clear details. Carbonation was out so we ordered two seltzers instead of draft beer. During our entire dinner on 10/26 at 7:00-7:30pm, we had to listen to two of the female bartenders bashing and gossiping about their coworkers and making fun of other customers, particularly one from Philly as if they were so disgusting. One was working and one was visiting at the bar. The food was great as always but these two "ladies" were the disgusting ones with dripping B words and F bombs left and right. Ruined our quiet cubby behind the bar. If these women are reading right how, think about who you are talking about in public and maybe not make fun of costumers IN FRONT OF OTHER CUSTOMERS. Gave it a try on Saturday night. Arrived 6:30, place almost empty, bad sign. Our group of 6 had. 2 apps that were fine, server good and attentive, beer cold. Our meals were a different story. Corn beef and cabbage was ok but cabbage was cooked to death, terrible. Shepherds pie was just ok. The Irish beef stew was horrible. Just a bowl of mush, been sitting in a pot far too long. Got through about half of it before giving up, worst stew I've ever had. This place isn't worth the effort of trying to find it. Disappointed. read more

This has been one of our favorite places so we're so disappointed tonight. We had an Irish friend fly into town and bragged about Madra. We arrived at 9:30 pm and were told that the kitchen was closed and we could only order one drink. Website says open til 11:00. They said 10:00. Fine, but 9:30 isn't 10:00. We promptly left. Would like immediate contact from the owner/manager. We've been loyal customers and advocates for the past 5 years. Your evening staff does not have your best interests. read more

Came here for lunch on our way home due to excellent experience in Charleston and this one did not disappoint either! Great wooden atmosphere, private booths and plenty of bar seating. Ordered the corned beef and cabbage (gigantic portion!) and grilled chicken sandwich with no bun. Both were excellent! Service was great, would highly recommend! read more

We usually love the food here but the last visit a few days ago was disappointing. The soda didn't taste right as I tried 2 different drinks. Maybe needed another co2. Also ordered the potato soup with was way too thick so not soup at all. The burgers which are usually delicious were so so. Not sure if they got a new cook but the whole meal was off. read more

First timer for brunch here and we were so hungry. Ate our food and forgot to take photos! It was delicious. Fried green tomato BLT was delicious. Can't go wrong with a burger and fries either - juicy and cooked to temperature. Love natural hand cut fries. Best part is amazing service at the bar, with a huge selection. Hubs tried the Madralatta, a Harp draft with a splash of Bloody Mary mix finished with chili lime salt. It was excellent. They had Catawba white zombie on draft too, one of my faves. For COVID, complimentary masks available at the door with sanitizer. Masks required when not seated. Staff was all masked. Bar seats were properly distanced. Table were spread out. Amazing fluffy/crispy fish and chips.*** --COVID-19 info: You must wear a mask to enter and while walking around. Once you are seated you can take off your mask. Sanitizer at every table and tables are thoroughly cleaned. Disposable masks and sanitizer are provided outside the restaurant before entering just in case you left a mask at home-- I've really missed Madra Rua and used to go here a LOT. Today, my dad and I were getting hungry and after I had eaten fish and chips a few days ago, I was craving Madra's again. Tired of being couped up inside, we decided to head out to Summerville (about a 25 minute drive from where we are in North Charleston). I had never been to the Summerville location before, but there was a lot of parking even around Friday lunchtime. The back/side door has a pile of disposable masks for patrons to use if they do not have any on hand, as it's required to go inside. There is also hand saniziter outside and on every table. When we got in, the pubtender immediately helped us out, got a table wiped down, and sat us. We got their spinach/artichoke dip as an appetizer and it was great. I wish the bowl was a little bigger to hold more, as the dip/chip ratio was a little off. The chips themselves were fine--a bit salty but of course, they're really there to deliver the dip into your gullet. The fish and chips were just as I remebered them. Actually, I wasn't supposed to get two pieces of fish but one of the pieces was small that they decided to just give me two--so big thanks the the kitchen for that! The fish was light and fluffy and the batter is so crispy on the outside without being too greasy. The fries themselves were fine, not much seasoning which was fine with me as the fish and the tartar worked so well together. What I like about the fish and chips (in general, but especially for Madra's) is that it's so simple in terms of the plate and flavor but combine that with the texture of the fish and you've got a great lunch or dinner. For beers, I had a Power Ranger (Guinness+Ranger IPA--unsure if this is new but I haven't been to Madras in years) and a Half & Half (Guinness+Harp Lager). Both were super smooth and even though I'm not a huge stout/porter guy anymore I feel like getting any other beer other than a Guinness or one of their blends just doesn't feel right. Lastly, Madra Rua has a fantastic atmosphere everytime. Today was pretty quiet but even then people were talking and laughing amongst themselves and with the bartender as traditional Irish music (I assume) played gently throughout the restaurant. I imagine once the East Montague/Park Circle location opens up (and once this COVID world normalizes), it'll be flooded with regulars who really, really missed the food and people--not to mention the crowds that gather during football matches. read more

Our family loves Madra Rua and has for many years. There's something for every type of eater we have. We've gone as a couple and we've gone with a group of 20, and the service has been consistently friendly and mostly on point. Given the tumultuous times that restaurants are in now with staffing shortages, it's never affected our experience. Although there are multiple locations, we frequent the Summerville site. There's ample free parking, and different seating options for small or large groups. I've never waiting for an open ladies bathroom bc they're all labeled for humans. I've always appreciated that as a woman, and bc we have several trans and non-binary family members, I am also thankful. Most importantly, the food is consistently delicious. The regular menu fare and the specials are great, from the burgers, to the fries to the prime rib sandwich (we suggest adding grilled onions, shrooms, and provolone), to the Reuben, Irish nachos, and on and on. The queso chicken which is usually a Friday special is delicious. And if you have room, Bailey's cheesecake! read more

This the best place in town for an authentic Irish pub experience. The decor, to the food, and the drinks will set you in Dublin for a great time. The bar and seats are all dark wood with dim lighting and Irish music playing. The menu has different options for different times of the day. I went at lunch and there were only a few people there. I ordered the beer cheese soup that was probably the best I've ever had. I could drink it like water it was so good. I had the Irish Stew that came with soda bread. Again, delicious down to every last bite. There plenty of beers on tap to choose from, both local and foreign. I had the Son of a Peach Wheat which was so smooth and flavorful. (Also a SC beer). I've only been here during the day but at night the place is packed with people overflowing outside. I think this is a great place for daytime quiet meals and nighttime party fun. read more

We enjoyed the shepards pie and fish and chips. Pleasant ambiance and the staff is nice too.

If it wasn't for the server, I would have given it one star. Ordered Shepards Pie -- our past go to meal here. This time it was horrible, barely warm mashed potatoes, lots of salty "Syrup", could not find any meat, minimal vegetables. Will not be going back. read more

Went last Sunday for brunch and was not impressed. Been there several times in the past and they were great, but this time not so much. I ordered the Madra Rua bowl and it was almost inedible due to the amount of mustard in it. Mustard that was NOT listed in description on menu. Had I wanted mustard I would have ordered a sandwich. My friend ordered French toast and bacon. French toast overcooked and tasted almost burnt and bacon was so overcooked it was almost black. Although there were only a couple of other customers in restaurant my group of 4 were seated in basically an enclosed area that felt like a closet as if we were outcasts or something. Night and day from the Park Circle location. The smell hits you hard when you walk in, you know the smell of a restaurant when they have failed to do basic cleaning? The booths were sticky, service great, and food oh God. We ordered the Irish stew with soda bread and a salad. The stew had meat that tasted like it was sitting out back for days or from a frozen food platter from the local market. The soda bread was old as s$!#. Barely edible. Never again. read more
