Stopped in for looking for a few transitional play-to-work items. I've shopped at the Santana Row location a few times and feel it has good selection and the staff is nice. I love shopping at madewell because I get most of my clothes here but my past visit here made me rethink how I felt about the store. A kind store associate helped me pick out a pair of jeans for me and noted that because they have the denim donation promotion and I didn't have a pair on me to donate. She said I could come back within 7 days with the jeans and get $20 back. So I gash purchased my jeans with the intention of coming back to donate my jeans. I came in Around noon on Wednesday and waited in line for about 10 minutes while someone was being helped. Finally another lady came to help me and when I told her about getting the price adjustment she looked quite upset stating that they don't have this policy and Im not allowed to get a price adjustment. The lady made me feel so uncomfortable and awkward to a point where I didn't know what to say. I drove 45 minutes specifically to come to this store to do a price adjustment. The lady said she would make an exception for me this time but would not do this again. I've always been a big fan of Madewell. From the material and the modern minimal styles. For years I've always stuck to my own aesthetic and preference, and when I came into Madewell one particular person helped me out. Daijunay had put out outfits styled by her for me to try on, I was really nervous because I'm so used to what I'd choose and try on. She had me wear just about everything I'd never thought to pick out myself but I must say that I'm so pleasantly pleased with this outfits she picked out for me! I love shopping at Madewell as they carry my favorite jeans and are made of great quality at a moderate price point. After the customer service I received today, I really want to avoid coming here unless I truly have to or to make an in store return from online. Like many other reviews, it seems as if the associates will not acknowledge you or are less willing to help you if you're a person of color. I've noticed this pattern the last couple of times I've been here and it was the most apparent today. I stood by the fitting rooms to wait for an associate to let me know I could try on my items and I waited for a couple of minutes (the store was practically empty since it was 1pm on a Tuesday.) Finally, one walks up to me and asks "Um did you have a question or something?" And before I was even able to utter a word, she condescendingly said the fitting rooms were already clearly open and I could've just walked myself in... Usually at this location, the associates help you into a fitting room so I was taken aback by her response. If that wasn't rude enough, I tried asking if I could get some smaller sizes myself as she wasn't willing to help me and she said they didn't have any more without even asking what style/specific jeans. I was planning to buy several jeans and literally look for the other sizes myself so I don't know what the issue was for her. The cashier was very sweet and kind, it felt like a breath of fresh air after being treated so poorly. I love Madewell! Can't rave enough about this store. First off, their staff is very friendly. I am always greeted when I walk in. Second, their jewelry is gorgeous! It's dainty and classy-- and affordable. Third, their clothing is very comfortable. Madewell is owned by J. Crew and like their more casual, comfortable line. They're known for jeans and comfortable shirts. Of course, with COVID unfortunately their fitting rooms aren't open. Okay clothes but staff sucks; not helpful with an attitude. The employees seem so dead, not lively and bring the vibe down. I AKSED an employee (who was standing around) what the price was and she told me to go to the cashier , whilst there were multiple people in line. Probably won't shop here again. Jean shopping can be such a daunting task--especially for a curvy girl. We have to deal with inconsistencies when it comes to size inclusivity, judge-y looks from store patrons and sales associates, and not to mention the overstimulation from spending time shopping. Not surprised to see bad reviews here. I just left the store and didn't buy anything, which is pretty rare for me. The employees (working on Friday 9/17 at 3;30pm) were just so "mean girl"y. I asked where this particular pair of jeans were and she goes "over there. At the denim bar." And I asked "which one is it?" And she points them in the general direction. All the employees complaining to each other in the nooks of the store how so and so isn't coming into work today and how so and so's back hurts and they were late the other day by an hour. Last week I came by to purchase a dress and the customer service I received from Davianna was good she was helpful and nice. But today I ended up doing a return because I forgot to use a gift card I received a couple weeks ago and when I did my return today it was so bad. I initially walked in and was not greeted. Instead I knew I was ready to make a return and stop in the line in front of the register and Victoria and her associate said, "Do you have a question?" It wasn't phrased the best way but that's okay. So she told someone behind the counter who looked busy and was on the phone to help me with my return but she said she was in the middle of an interaction with a customer so Victoria took a whole minute before deciding to help me with my return. Then she asked for my receipt and I gave her my email copy and it looked like she didn't know what to do because she just kept swiping up and down and then finally Rheana came in and asked if she could assist and Victoria handed me over to her without saying anything. And rheana initially thought I was there to make a purchase because the handoff was so bad because there was just zero communication between the two. Anyway, Rheana was nice and helped me make my return. I was just disappointed on how Victoria handled the interaction. The two stars are for Davianna and Rheana. read more

I visited this store to buy myself something new for my upcoming birthday. Initially I was eyeing some jeans. The fitting rooms are open so I was able to try on a couple pairs before deciding that it wasn't a jean day. They quarantine the returned fitting room clothes. The sales rep who was managing the fitting rooms was super helpful in answering all of my questions (first time shopping here) and when she went on her break, she let me know that there was another person coming in her spot to assist me if I needed anymore help. I found an awesome pair of sandals in the sale area and was told that they match their online website price if the store price is different (hooray!). When I got to the register, the sales rep wiped down the counter and credit card pad then let me know when they were ready to ring me up. The register had a plexiglass glass screen around it as a safety measure barrier. The check out was quick and easy. The sales rep at the register wished me happy birthday . Overall: all sales rep were extremely helpful. Store was super clean and organized by color and size which was a total triple plus in my book! It was super easy to find exactly what you're looking for without have to dig through anything. I'll definitely be coming back to shop and will recommend to others. One of my favorite stores in Santana Row in terms of jewelry. Everything is so cute and refined looking at super affordable prices. Every time that I go back to San Diego to visit friends I buy them a bracelet or a necklace from here. I also like the classic French style of many items they tell, like the shirts with blue and red stripes and nicely cut pants and blouses. The price of the clothing is ok but the lingerie is too expensive in my opinion. In any case they always have an extensive sales rack that is worth take a look at...besides they provide some drinks and sweets while you shop. Nice customer experience! read more

As I was going to put the clothes back that I decided not to get she hurried to come to me and said I didn't need to do that! What!?? I'm putting it back because I changed my mind. She goes on and tells me about the sale without even asking if I'm a member. Members don't get the same discount which I am aware because I am one. She was awkward after I explained to her I am. Honestly, if you aren't white or look wealthy don't bother coming. The store was empty, makes sense why. Staff need to learn it's not about looks but customer service. I love the business philosophy of creating long-lasting pieces that will not contribute as quickly to the landfill and waste resources. I also love their denim recycling program. You can bring in an old pair of jeans and get a $20 coupon for a new one! They actually put the recycled denim to good use as opposed to a landfill. Some people might be unhappy about the prices, but that is to be expected because they are higher quality long lasting pieces that you won't have to replace as much as opposed to flimsy "fast fashion" available at other stores. I also got some great deals on sale items and the prices really aren't that high compared to many other stores in the area. read more

I don't know if it's because we were casually dressed or that we weren't white but we received awful customer service. The store was pretty slow and we were not greeted upon entry or at any other point in the duration of our visit. The only "assistance"we received was from a rude and sour faced sales associate who gave a snarky comment about what items we were looking at who then simply walked away. I've had better service from disgruntled McDonald's employees and will be telling all of our friends and family who shop there to avoid this location. It seems funny that all of the white women were being greeted and assisted and that we as Asian women ,as well as a woman of color unrelated to us, did not get greeted or assisted. My girls like this store for their jeans and a few cotton tops. What bothers me coming here during pandemic was the store is small but they just let everyone in. No limit amount I don't think. No one at the door to make sure any certain number of customers inside shopping. They also allowed people to try on clothes so fitting rooms are all filled and not a lot of room for social distancing. My daughter had 1 Jean she didn't find fit well after trying it on more at home. I had to return it and the girl there rudely asked what's wrong with it in a hostile tone. So I informed her that there's nothing particular wrong with it but it just wasn't the right fit for her after all. Really? Was that kind of question necessary? A more polite question would be "any reason for this return?" Or "did it not work out for you?" Etc. Plenty of different ways to address a return of a purchase than bluntly asking customers what's wrong with it like you're unhappy I had to return 1 item after purchasing 6 items. You're talking about $130 jeans here! That's $650 I just spent in jeans alone at your store. Please train your employees better made well! read more

One of the cashiers was pretty damn rude to me. To avoid naming names, let's call her V. I had been told by a different associate that the items I wanted to buy were both included in the year end sale, which was 30% off the whole store except for excluded items. When I checked out, V charged full price for the sherpa jacket - and when I asked about the storewide sale, she said, "yeah... that one's not included cuz it's sherpa" with a rude tone. I responded that another store associate had checked for me that both the items I had were included in the sale, and that I'd been told that only denim was excluded. She just kind of gave me a condescending look and repeated in an impatient tone, "yeaah... but it's sherpa" without any further explanation or addressing the potential misinformation. She didn't check online, ask the two cashiers next to her, ask any store associate, or ask me who it was that told me it was on sale. She simply asserted that I was wrong again. She then asked me if I still wanted to buy the jacket, in the same condescending tone. I felt attacked, like she didn't believe I could afford the jacket if it wasn't on sale. I purchased it anyway, because I really liked the style. Soon afterward, I checked online, and I (and the original store associate) were both right about it being 30% off. I went back and had the difference refunded by another cashier, Amanda, who was much more professional. One star for V's rude service. She wouldn't even make an easy check after I told her someone else confirmed the sale items for me, and instead chose to repeatedly shut me down with a lot of "you're wrong, and if you can't afford this then don't waste my time" attitude. Which also means that she was straight up overcharging customers - pressuring them into believing that they were the ones who were misinformed. She would have cost me $60 if I hadn't checked after leaving the store (and probably cost others too). Two stars because the store itself had good inventory. I'm a total sucker for Madewell and whenever I'm even kind of sort of in the area, I find an excuse to stop by the store and look at all the things that I really don't need and have no bu$ine$$ buying. This particular Madewell has a lot more sale items and areas than my homebase Madewell BUT I always find that the stuff they have on sale is all the weird really wide shirts they sell. I really wish they would stop making shirts that way, and I feel like they do it 65% of the time. The store is one of the bigger and more well-laid-out Madewells, and I really appreciate that they've gone to some trouble to make sure the curtains on their dressing rooms (which are right in the middle of the store) actually close all the way. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen people's butts and people have seen my butt in a Madewell store/dressing room. One thing that I absolutely loathe about Madewell stores is that while you can try on all their wares to get the true feel and fit, and undoubtedly fall in love with their denim or whatever else that isn't an extra-wide shirt, then buy the item, only to go home and see that all your items are 20% off or more on their online store. This has actually happened to me an embarrassing amount of times, and this store location is no different. I know back at my home Madewell, they don't and won't price match their in store items with their online store, so I would assume that this one is the same, but I honestly haven't asked. It just sucks that whenever I do buy something from the store, I always go home to find at least a few of my items on severe discount online and my last experience here was no different. I love the quality and consistency in their jeans, I just wished it carried through into their online vs brick & mortar stores. Also, the purchasing a shopping bag thing is ridiculous here. I'm a big fashion blogger reader and I saw a gal wearing a cute flow-y top from this brand. Since I'd never heard of Madewell prior to reading her blog, I had to look it up. It turns out that this store is the spawn of J. Crew who opened this extension of their brand in 2006. The store has a beachy vibe with easy to wear pieces-- nothing looks like it's trying too hard to be cool. This is the kind of stuff you wear when you want to feel "effortless." Nothing overly dressy here-- you won't find black tie gowns but what you will find is that lightweight sweater you need for an outdoor concert, or that cute summer dress you can wear for a barbecue picnic, or a date night with your special someone. And the best part of this store is that things fit me *well*. It's so hard to find a brand where the clothes fit your body type but this brand does. I can't tell you how good that feels. read more

I had the misfortune to encounter a less than courteous sales associate, who very rudely informed me that the dressing room I was changing in was actually reserved for another customer. Her tone and attitude with which she addressed me was less than suitable for someone in her position. Here's a question: why wasn't I offered a dressing room? There wasn't anyone manning the rooms when I walked up. I certainly had an armful of items and there were plenty of available rooms. The only difference is that I happen to be Asian and the sales associate and the other customer she was bending over backwards to help were white. Madewell has touched down in the South Bay! I used to always look forward to visiting San Francisco to drop in to Madewell, but now there's one just 15 minutes away from home in San Jose! The store on the first day looked amazing (no surprise there), although I was shocked to see it wasn't packed with people! In the end, that only works in my favor...I hate shopping in crowds. The DJ was bumpin, champagne was being served, and 10% of purchases were to be donated to the San Jose Museum of Art - a cause close to my heart. The staff, in pure Madewell fashion, were impeccably dressed and very helpful. The adorable polka dot clutch I received as a gift with my first purchase was just icing on the cake! Madewell is a mecca for young, hip, IDGAF nonchalant type fashionistas. Think of J.Crew's younger, cooler sister, because it IS J.Crew's younger, cooler sister! Oh so cool. I love Madewell denim! Especially the Alley Straight jeans. I don't usually have a hankering nor do I ever gravitate towards skinny jeans and I wish they would just go away! Sadly, they still plague us today. (Hey, it's not for everyone, yo!) I find that this particular location has a very nice layout and pieces are neatly organized. There's a nice flow to the store. I love the way the pieces look online, but when I visit live in store, the shirts look awfully boxy and cropped and the jeans way too skinny. I also find that this particular store either doesn't carry a good selection of sale items or they move too fast due to the high foot traffic and volume simply by being in Santana Row. I find that their fashions are geared towards the cool girls next door. Very casual fits, yet "cool". Simple design aesthetics for simple girls, but it can be severely overpriced for what it is. T-shirts and denim... you can find a lot of the same designs here at Target! I've made a couple purchases here, does that make me a cool girl? Should I start a Pinterest page or Instagram and try to model such designs? In summation, the sales associates here are nice enough and well dressed! I love sales people who wear the brand's clothes like they mean it! Sales people are walking models, so it helps to identify with the clothes when you see it live and alive on a real life person. Minus one star for the dressing rooms. I find that the curtains are uber inefficient and not private because they simply do not close all the way. There were all chatting it up with each other which I have no problem with but at least ask me I need any assistance. I did inform the employee that helped me at check out when asked if I found everything okay what my issue was. She apologized so for that reason I give them two stars instead of one. Also, I wouldn't have minded so much if there was only 1-2 employees in there but the fact that there was three and none of them offered assistance bothered me.
