This is my admission of guilt.
I wear the same thing every day.
Every.Single.Day.
Well okay, *technically*, I put on like 12 different outfits, but I always end up in the same thing. I'd estimate that I wear roughly 2-3 different outfits seasonally, which in Chicagoland stands for 2 seasons. Summer, and the rest of the cold sh*t that happens the other 9 months. Since we're officially into the cold sh*t season, I wasted no time slipping into my wintertime fashion rut with my three main staple outfits consisting of black jeans and a denim button-down, plum jeans and a green button-down, and a fleece onesie with fox feeties -- It's not my proudest outfit, but my apartment is perpetually cold as sh*t and the best semi-remedy short of wearing everything I own at once.
So as you've probably guessed, I needed some new duds... but not just any duds. I need duds that fit. Duds that would uphold some level of quality. Duds that aren't from Target, like the entire rest of my sad, dilapidated wardrobe. Enter: Madewell.
I'd been searching their online shop for a few weeks but nothing really jumped out and I found it really hard to tell how long things were, how wide they were and just how they'd fit and I wanted to throw the Madewell towel in but freaking Refinery 29 has got to be in cahoots with Madewell because every other day they release something about the brand that's a 'you've got to see this ____ from Madewell' or 'Madewell does it again...' and blah, blah, blah. So then I remembered that Oakbrook Mall has a Madewell store and I had a Sunday afternoon free, so I went over to check it out.
At first the store didn't seem like the store had that much stuff in there, but about 40 minutes later I felt differently. For me, this is the absolute top-level price point at which I can kind-of afford to purchase clothing... I mean, I won't be able to purchase anything else for myself for the next 6 months because of it, but I don't think I walked out with any lemons either.
As far as the staff goes, I think I kind of had to earn their attention, but once I got it (by picking and carrying around multiple pieces of merchandi$e), I was set. They helped me with my stuff (black jeans and button-ups- no surprise there) and claimed a dressing room for me. The dressing rooms are roomy, BUT they have those god-awful curtain closures. the kind that no matter how much or which way you tug them, the curtain never full closes so people walking through the store can totally see in through the end slits. It was super annoying and kind of drove me mad, but I really wanted to try on the Madewell brand denim so I just said 'f*ck it' and did it anyway, even though I knew if anyone really wanted to they could see in. Luckily, I was one of maybe 5 customers in the store - the rest were a group of rich teenage girls and their moms and I don't think they would have noticed me if I'd drop dead in the middle of the store, let alone changing in a semi-closed dressing room.
All the button-ups I tried on were grossly disappointing and what I'd expected from the pics online. all super wide, too short, and not worth the $80+ each price tag. The denim, on the other hand, was perfection. So comfortable and had most of the colors I like in denim (black, grey, dark green), and they fit like a glove -- no, better than a glove. I bought 3 pair. They were irresistible and ran from $98-$135.
I also picked up some accessory jewelry from their clearance section in back, which offered an extra 40% off all sale jewelry and clothing -- making for some fantastic steals, comparably.
My one main beef being a first time shopper, is that I noticed the 2 moms and daughters in line in front of me inquiring about the online sale price of items and/or having coupon codes for online (that you can NOT use in store, FYI). When I went home I went online and checked out their prices, specifically their online clearance section, and found that a whole LOT of items that were full price at the store were clearance priced online. Luckily, nothing I purchased at full-price was in that list, but it's still annoying. They mentioned to the people ahead of me that they'll price match if the prices are lower on their online store, but it just seems shady that the prices aren't already set up accordingly. Because of that, I'd likely veer towards shopping online for Madewell, unless I needed to try something on. read more
