It might be a little controversial, but to me, the ambiance of a cafe is most important! And at Sohn, the atmosphere is immaculate. It's very obviously a Korean-style cafe. The interior is washed in a palette of soft neutrals and pale wood. Lots of open spaces, airy lantern light fixtures, fabric tapestries, etc., etc., etc. So beautiful, and so perfect for photos! (My friend and I took lots, believe me.) The only "complaint" I have is that it isn't open seating; an employee will seat you when you arrive, so you can't really choose where you want to settle. Kinda bummed because I wanted to see upstairs. Even though I prioritize cafe aesthetics over food, I'm pleased to report that the food and drinks at Sohn are just as delicious as they look. Style AND substance! There's a QR code at each table, which you scan to order. The workers bring the items to your table directly, which is pretty nice. Here is a rundown of everything we ordered: - Banana oat milk hojicha latte: Wait, why was this so good? It actually might be one of the best drinks I've ever tried. You can tell they use real bananas; there are literally chunks of banana at the bottom. No artificial syrups here. The banana is sweet and creamy, not bitter at all. Plus, it's oat milk! Yay for my fellow lactose-intolerant friends. The hojicha was okay, though. I think that, if it were nuttier, the roasted flavor would've complemented the banana so well, bringing this drink to a whole new level. - Coffee hojicha: Pretty bitter if you don't add syrup, but once it's properly sweetened, it's pretty good. Since their hojicha isn't very flavorful, it's easily overpowered by the coffee, so I wouldn't recommend this one. (Though it's not bad.) - Popcorn chicken: This was so delicious and beautifully presented in a round stone bowl. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, and the fried rice cakes were a unique inclusion! They are rolled in a seaweed seasoning, which reminds me of furikake. Glad they have savory items, too. - Gochujang cookie: Meh, honestly, you can skip this. It's not a bad cookie per se, but it tastes like a regular ol' sugar cookie. I don't taste the gochujang at all. It's not even a pretty cookie, haha, so I wouldn't even order it for aesthetics either. But overall, I had a great experience at Sohn! I saw a lot of people working on their computers here, but it's also a solid spot for photos or hanging out with friends. Parking wasn't too bad when I went (a weekday afternoon), but I heard the line can get long. I would totally recommend this place, and I hope I can return soon to try more items.

The initial service I received from the shorter long-haired gal at the counter was lovely, but then a taller long-haired gal with glasses approached to answer a question I had, and the disdainful attitude was palpable. The couple of requests I had, including a little extra ice in a bigger cup, was met with practically a roll of the eyes. I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or if there was something else going on, but I wish I had said something in the moment to ask why she was presenting me with such an attitude. As for the espresso itself, it was as delicious as the other location.

Although their beans are globally sourced, the business partners with a local Pacifica business (Soul Grind Coffee) to roast their coffee beans (we love local businesses supporting each other)! This particular location is conveniently located near UCSF Mission Bay, UCSF Bayfront, and the Chase Center, which makes it a perfect spot to stop-by and great a bite to eat or a coffee to-go. I tragically forgot to bring my lunch to work one afternoon, but was fortunate to learn that Caffe Central was just a quick walk away from me. I placed an order for an acai smoothie and a turkey avocado BLT via DoorDash for pickup (to time it with my lunch break), and was notified when my order was ready to pick-up (right on time). Upon reaching their storefront, I was pleasantly surprised with how spacious and airy it was inside. There was plenty of seating and the wide windows let plenty of sunlight in, making it a great spot to stop and enjoy a bite. Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy my meal in-store as they were closing, so I went on the hunt for somewhere else to sit and enjoy my food (if I had the time I would have definitely enjoyed my food in-store). Their turkey avocado BLT features smoked turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese, arugula and mayo-pesto all on an acme baguette (it comes with tomato too, but I took that out). The sandwich was perfect - exactly what you expect when ordering a sandwich like this. all the ingredients tasted fresh and delicious, especially when paired with the creamy mayo-pesto and the crunchy acme baguette. The acai smoothie was equally tasty, and the acai flavor wasn't overwhelmed by the other smoothie ingredients. I guess you can say I was almost glad to have forgotten my lunch at home on this day, since I was able to enjoy a delicious meal like this! I'd definitely recommend checking out Caffe Central the next time you find yourself at/near any of their locations and craving a bite to eat or something to sip on.

Parked easily on the side street, walked in around 3:30 in the afternoon, no hassle. The place has an authentic Japanese cafe feel, the kind where the menu has things you don't typically find at your average sushi spot. I had my eye on the sandos, specifically the Chicken Katsu Sando, but landed on the Spicy Tuna Don instead. Good call. Spicy yellowfin tuna tartare over well-seasoned sushi rice, topped with sesame, furikake, green onions, with a little radish and cucumber on the side. The tuna was very fresh, the rice was on point. Service was quick and polite - they even have an outside window for takeout. One nice detail: a neat dollop of wasabi is pasted along the inside wall of the bowl, which is a clean way of letting you control exactly how much heat you want to mix in. Tasteful presentation, but don't let that fool you. It has a legitimate kick, so calibrate accordingly. Paired it with their Honjozo dry sake cup, which was a nice complement to the meal and exactly the right call for a mid-afternoon bite. The sandos looked great on other tables and I fully intend to go back for the Chicken Katsu Sando - and then go try the wine bar next door to it. which was pretty tempting.

When we arrived, we were greeted and led upstairs and handed a glass of bubbly rosé to enjoy while we waited for the rest of the class to arrive. The class itself was fun! Both instructors - Debbie, our Cheese teacher, and Ailis, our wine teacher - were very knowledgeable about their respective subjects and worked well together in guiding the class through tasting the different pairings and encouraging experimenting. Debbie in particular was an exceptional teacher - her enthusiasm about the subject and the way she took time to talk to everyone was something I really appreciated. The cheese and wines we tried were quite interesting - in fact, I actually found one of the only bleu cheeses that I've ever liked (it's called Roquefort for those who are interested). It was quite interesting to see how different cheeses paired with different wines and sides ( our cheese came with a side of bread, craisins, sourdough crackers, dark chocolate, and housemade rhubarb jam) All in all, my girlfriend and I had a great time at the cheese school. I'd definitely be down to check it out again (maybe for a charcuterie board class). 5/5

But I've since bought stuff here to use their bathroom (multiple times) in a pinch, have luxuriated in their stellar calming atmosphere, enjoyed baked delights even though I paid too much for them, and (last time) received a handwritten Where's George? bill in change that sadly wasn't a match likely because the amateur Georger entered it as a Series of 2017 bill instead of a Series of 2017A. You might also remember that I two-starred the original The Plant location in the Marina long before it closed, and I more recently three-starred the location in SFO's Terminal 2, although The Plant's website makes no mention of any of its physical locations, strangely. (They do helpfully explain that it costs about $500,000 to franchise your own location.) Here's what to expect. It will be quieter than you expect when you enter. Perhaps there will be no one at the counter, but that just gives you more time to peruse the baked goods and sweets in the case. When someone does come to take your order, it will be a very nice gentleman--or at least, that's whom I've always gotten. Everything is overpriced, although it's not quite as overpriced as some other places, which should make you very angry, because it's really overpriced. But move beyond that. The baked goods and sweets are pretty good. Not worth the sticker shock, but still good. The brownies are the one exception. They're not sweet enough for how large they are. If they were smaller, they'd be fine, but eating an entire dense brownie without the sweetness makes it feel like you're chewing your way through a piece of flotsam you found in a bog. The food is very good. I've enjoyed both salads I had here. The ambiance is a super sneaky six stars or so. There are different tables and chairs at different heights. There's at least one coffee table, and I could see getting some serious work done here, although the need continually to buy (expensive) stuff to laptop-camp might make that nigh impossible. I've definitely read a few chapters in a comfy chair and have never felt rushed out. They keep their two single-user bathrooms super clean, and there's a separate handwashing area that has simultaneous views of the lovely wine shop/caterer next door and the little courtyard outside. It's located on the ground floor of the American Industrial Center's North Building. Both buildings comprised a cannery long ago. They now contain all kinds of businesses, from cafes to cheese shops to bike shops to bakeries to industrial designers. The North Building at least has lots of kooky details, especially in its entrances and exits, stairwells, hallways, and windows. Explore it!
