Mad Hat Tea is our no-doubt local spot to get outstanding loose teas. The Mad Coconut in particular is a fantastic black tea with substantial but not overpowering coconut in it (you can even see tiny drops of coconut oil shimmering on the surface of your cup of tea, like little stars). It's my favorite tea by a long shot right now. And the labels on all of the tea varieties are really fun to look at. Going into Mad Hat Tea is like going into a time machine, though I can't quite put my finger on which decade it's in; there are elements of 60s, 70s and 80s for sure. The decor is somewhat like a ramshackle basement, and you could easily imagine a wide range of activities taking place here, perhaps a palm reading or some knitting, or a game of Dungeons and Dragons, or a deep conversation about Pink Floyd or H.P. Lovecraft. I say this all with affection. Service has always been pretty easy going and a little detached. This isn't a place to come when you're in a hurry. read more

My friend and I decided to check this place out on a whim. It has a bohemian ambiance to it. This place has a very wide selection of teas. The place is dimly lighted and seems like an nice place to relax with a cup of tea. Each area is sectioned off from the kinds of tea they offer like black, oolong, green, white, etc. I was overwhelmed at how many different kinds of tea there was! I liked that there was a section of "ailment" teas for when you have a cold, flu, digestion issues, anxiety, "woman" problems, and more! Some of the names were pretty hilarious too! (ex. anxie"tea") I really enjoy green tea, so I got the green lemon and gingseng oolong tea. The green lemon tastes straight up like fruity pebbles which is very off-putting. The oolong was much better. The quality of these teas are decent. I do enjoy the fact that they offer smaller packets so that you can try out the many kinds of tea they offer. Mad Hat is the epitome of what I expect from a tea shop. It's funky, quirky, and comfortable. The atmosphere is laid back and it almost feels like you've walked into someone's home. There is seating at the front of the store, along with bar seating...as well as a comfy living room type setup in the back; stocked with books and games for you to enjoy. They offer a wide selection of teas, and for $2.50/pot, you could spend tons of time sampling a bunch of flavors without breaking the bank. (There are plenty of loose tea options to buy and take home with you too). Service was great and there was no pressure to guzzle down your tea and order more (though, I definitely did that). I also appreciated their "no cellphone use" (please) signs. How refreshing for an establishment to ask you to disconnect and just enjoy yourself! Most places I would have walked out it took so long to get an order in and get tea. In fact the guy sitting at the bar and another customer at a table were able to not only order tea and be served but they also got a second round before I could even get a first round. My friend and I ordered a craft of tea the gentleman behind the counter though was more into the conversation he was having with the guy at the bar then anyone else. It wasn't busy or I would have excused this. At one point he claimed he couldn't find the tea we ordered yet I can see him clearly from the table I was at not looking for it but rather talking. When we finally got our tea it was over extracted but it wasn't worth mentioning as I am sure I would have had to wait another 20 plus minutes. Eventually service did turn around a little with service. That's why two stars not one but we were made to feel that if you were not a known regular you were not important. My first time here and I have been so excited to come visit as I am a huge tea fan and sadly was disappointed. I might try again in the future just to see maybe it was an off day. read more

From the immediate vibe I got was as if I fell down the rabbit hole, making my way through that colorful door. The girl at the counter was like Alice, kind and thoughtful. The owner was older, most likely the Hatter himself. She looked at me and asked what blend I would like to start with. I informed her that it was my first time and I needed something for a terrible cold. Honestly, even half a cup of anything would have done me wonders, but she sorted through her infinite blends and found me the perfect one. While the healing brew steeped, I shuffled to find the perfect seat on the many available tables. Finally, having found the right one, I sipped the tea. This place deserves seventeen stars. This may be the best random experience I've had in years. Everything about Mad Hat, including the teas and Tobin's random ramblings, was excellent. Some notes from the experience: - There is almost every type of tea imaginable both for sale and for drinking in the store. In addition, they have created teas themselves, and admit to stealing ideas from other tea companies in order to improve them. - This is the first place I have seen raw Kava root available for sale in tea and tea powder form. They also have powdered Rooibos, and are apparently the only place in the state that sells it in that form. - Any tea is $2.50, regardless of the amount of work they have to put in. I ordered a Kava tea that involved steeping it in heat, cooling it down, adding coconut milk - it was not a small amount of work, and he put a huge amount of tea leaf in the pot to make the drink, and it was still only $2.50. - If you want to try a huge glass of tea for free or you would like to have a glass of almost any kind of tea and you don't mind if the leaves have been used just a few minutes prior, he'll use the leaves (which are still good) to re-brew a new glass/pot and it's yours, no cost. I must have had 5 different types of tea in my short time there, from Tobin generously dolling it out without even asking. - Actual conversation between Tobin, a customer, and myself. Tobin: I tried to get new contacts, and the ophthalmologist told me he was going to charge me $200 just to renew a prescription that hasn't changed in 21 years. Customer: Why don't you just come to Costco? It will cost like $45 bucks. Tobin: I'm not going to go to Costco to get my eyes checked. They sell f'king trampolines. Do you know how many trampoline stores went out of business because Costco moved in? Me: Just 10 years ago there was a trampoline store on every corner. It was like Starbucks. Tobin: Well, not every corner, but every other corner maybe. Now they're gone. I'm not going to get my eyes checked at a place that put local trampoline stores out of business. ~~~~ There were a lot of funny conversations throughout the experience but a few stories are inappropriate for Yelp and I'm still high on tea caffeine and my brain isn't working properly. If I remember it though I'll update the review later. Still, I cannot recommend this place enough. The whole thing was an outstanding experience. read more

I don't think it takes much to say that Mad Hat Tea Company is the best tea shop in Tacoma! Perhaps I went here on a off day for the owner but when I walked in he was sipping wine, blasting Madonna and said that whoever gave him a one star review on Yelp can f***themselves! All very appropriate for the name of the place. A little bit like the Mad Hatter himself. I did not take the way he was acting unprofessional or offputting, more hilarious than anything! There was another guy that worked there and was the one that handled my order. The menu for the tea is huge, wonderfully overwhelming! I ordered the Black Rose tea and it was delicious! Whenever I drink coffee or tea I also get the munchies. Mad Hat does not have pastries or anything like that but they do have snacky things. I got a fine tasting Biscotti and some ginger candy which I ate at home. Mad Hat sells many varieties of teas, tea pots and whatever else you may need as well! My Alice Through the Looking Glass experience was fun and I have officially found my "go to" place for good tea here in town! P.S. I really wanted to like this shop. I love tea and there's nothing like this where I live; having relocated to DC from Austin, I was missing the excellent, if prissy, Tea Embassy and hoping this might be an even better shop to visit while in Tacoma. I was kind of disappointed. I was up for some banter with the owner, but honestly, he seemed to be mocking my friend - and not in a friendly way, more in the way where you go, "Whoah, let's pay for our tea and run away" - which is exactly what we did. The tea selection is wicked awesome, but it was very crowded when we were there so I didn't feel particularly comfortable lingering. Ambiance-wise, I was expecting more squishy chairs and less henna (labeled "for external use only" - bwahaha). If you do go, perhaps start off thinking of it as a shop and then linger if you feel comfy sitting there drinking tea. Mostly I wanted to hang out for a while and try a bunch of teas, and I was disappointed. The teas I brought back in my suitcase? AWESOME. read more

I'm more of a coffee guy, and when I do drink tea I do not add anything. I imaging if there is a tea heaven this would be it. I have had several teas here and have been very pleased. The last time I was here I actually bought a tea for a homeless guy outside, when he asked what it was I told him it was tea, he than asked tea from where, I said it was from The Mad Hat Tea people, he looked at me and said ohhhh, good, that is the good stuff. Wow, really? I was annoyed at how picky he was, then I was titillated at how happy he was at the quality of the drink. A very chill teashop in downtown tacoma that offers great conversation, never ending tea options, and is stripped of normal commercial conventions. The tea also comes at a very reasonable price. They now offer wifi! You can tell when you walk in the door that this is a very different establishment. Aka it is no Starbucks...and thats the way they like it. There is no rush or sense of urgency to order, which is great because they have endless tea options and selecting a tea can take some time. I enjoy blueberry rooibos, le creamsicle, and campfire. If you're not sure what you would like, just ask Tobin. He has oodles of suggestions and will find something that you'll love. Each pot of tea is only 2.50$, so feel free to try as many as you'd like without breaking the bank. They also offer cream and sugar, but be sure to ask for cream while ordering to get a cupfull. This shop has a bohemian feel to it, with comfy seating, low lighting, and a slab wood bar that is surprisingly welcoming. If you decide to sit and stay, tea is sold "by the cup" which is served in a glass teapot. For only $2.50 you get enough tea for a little over 2 cups. Sampling the teas really helped me narrow down which tea(s) I wanted to purchase (some teas smell better then they actually taste) and Mad Paris was a winner! I only regret not purchasing more of it. Tea merchandise is nicely organized all around the shop and in the back is a well stocked pre-bagged tea selection. There's also a round table in the corner of the bagged tea area (for those seeking more privacy). The average price for most of their tea is $6 for 50g. Just ask for the tea menu book, it provides a detailed list of the teas they sell and blend contents. It can be overwhelming because there really is A LOT of tea to choose from but I was told that they also have the tea menu listed on their website. Maureen, one of the shop owners, was friendly and interactive with everyone at the tea bar. She offered a lot of good suggestions for teas that matched my taste profile and let me smell the teas that I was interested in purchasing. I ended up purchasing 4 different teas (Mad Paris and Creamsicle being my favorite) and will definitely be back the next time I'm in Tacoma. The only "negative" that I can think of is that they only sell biscotti and candied ginger... I wish they served cookies! Tea infused cookies would be even better. ;) read more

It is a really cute shop that serves tea hot and sells loose leaf tea for customers to enjoy at home. I went in on a cold rainy saturday and the shop was empty of people. I was a bit surprised by that, except for that part of town is pretty dead Saturday at noon. The staff members were all hanging out in back, I could hear their voices quietly while I drank my tea out front. This wasn't a deterrent until I had to pay and needed to go find someone to settle by bill. I actually needed to go find a staff member and tell them I was ready to pay, after waiting for about 10 minutes for someone to come check on me. I understand the draw of sitting and chatting and drinking tea, but at the same time too I thought it came across as unprofessional. The tea was amazing, so they still rated 4 stars. read more

After trying several places that claimed to have tea, I made my way through the basement stairs labyrinth into the dark interior of the Mad Hat. Nice plush funky seating, lots of books, young eating their young, and tea, tea, tea! I just bring my tin in every couple of weeks, and Tobin fills it up with some awesome Yunnan black. Great prices, no cell phones, and NO BACKGROUND MUSIC-NOISE! My only whine is that it's in the Tacoma Parking Robbery Zone. Mad Hat is awesome! I always find gifts here for well...myself...and SOMETIMES other tea lovers that I know. In addition to having delicious tea, I find Mad Hat to be super affordable which can be tough to find when it comes to a specialty tea shop. They do not serve food so if you are expecting sandwiches or cookies or anything WITH your tea, that will not happen for you. Mad Hat is tea only! I have only purchased tea to take home from here and have never really sat down and had a cup of tea in the shop.
