As good as it gets! Well, at least in SF that is. I prefer Macy's over Nordstroms and Bloomingdales cuz I feel they offer more of an affordable selection. This is for the Macy's basement floor, Kitchen Department. It's amazing. I thought this kind of customer service only existed in small towns. I've had 2 experiences now with the customer service reps on this floor. I can honestly say the best customer service I've ever experienced from anywhere! 1st time (fall '06) i bought a microwave. While purchasing, they asked where I parked. I smiled and said "I was thinking I'd get a cab?.." They willingly wrapped up my mic and brought it outside, as well as hailed a cab for me. 2nd time (this past this weekend), we were scouting for some dishware. Just before purchasing, a sales rep filled us in on an amazing dish sale- she really saved us! AND, pointed us to the flatware sale. When we told her the style wasn't what we were looking for, she noted what other stores we should check out while downtown. I yelled out loud "You are my favorite salesperson of all time." She simply smiled. Oh, and she let me use my Macy's gift card that was at least 6 yrs old. Too good to be true. read more

Great location... not the newest feeling store but it is quite large and the buyers are pretty good. They stock everything you could want. The deals are found sometimes but not too often, at least on the high end brands we look for. Staff is hit or miss... sometimes you get great people and sometimes you get the worst.. or just ignored. It is a big city and a big name store... and it lives up to what it should be... it just isn't the best one I have ever been in. Great food court, though. I didn't realize they had one but on the floor with the housewares... there is a great area for this. The cheesecake factory in the top of Macy's has the absolute best spot ever! Gorgeous view of Union Square. Burger place in Macy's isn't worth it to me, but is a nice place to have a drink with a nice view of Union Square. read more

Boo on Macy's for dumping the old Santa... 1) The complainers were adults. If you're over 18 seeing a dept store Santa but your panties are too tight, you deserve a lump of coal. 2) Santa has his own little room, so it's not like when he jokes with adults that it'll offend little kids. 3) The 2 years we've taken our little dude, the old Santa was awesome. First of all, someone needs to update the Macy's picture because it doesnt look like that anymore! :) Second: Impulse on 3rd floor is the best! they have the most selection of designer jeans, even more than bloomingdales and saks fifth ave. if i want another pair of sevens then ill go here. the workers are super helpful but ONLY when its not busy. BUT Macy's is HUGE! it tends to get very pack and busy during the holidays but everyone shops here. you can find anything you want! After a long day of shopping you can always eat at Cheesecake Factory or the Cellar. you cant beat Macy's prices especially when they send me coupons ALMOST every week. i wonder how they make money when they have SALES all the time? read more

Highlights - This location is by far THE best during Christmas holiday. Outstanding decor, spectacular view of Union Square Xmas tree and ice rink, and SPCA window displays with actual kittens and puppies. - Multiple levels, variety of brands offered, and amazing shoe selection. This place is HUGE! - There is a food court, plenty of additional food options on the street level (Pinkberry/Boudin), and additional restaurants with amazing views overlooking Union Square (Cheesecake factory and Burger Bar). All day excursion right here! - Check out the neat bathroom on the 6th floor. One of the top, but IMO it's pretty dated and I don't get the hype. Improvements - Although clothing is laid out nicely and separated by brand name with evident signs, their fitting rooms are dated, messy, and some doors don't even lock. I love shopping here because of the Hugo Boss and Theory Boutique. The selection is wonderful and the staff is friendly and helpful. Omar, Anne, and the other staff always kit me out. Macy's offers free tailoring of pants with a $100 purchase. Bargains can be had if you check periodically. It seems like there is always some sale going on here. This is so much better than the Macy's on the East coast. More styles and really good clearance rack. I found a Calvin Klein summer dress on sale for $30 with coupon, and a Jessica Simpson dress for $40 that retails for $120. I could easily peruse the racks for work dresses. Also got Levi's for $35/pair. Shoe department is also pretty sweet. The woman at the cash register even mentioned the sale, and held the clothes overnight so I could come back the next day and get the sale price. read more

Some department stores probably have the most ridiculously slow sales persons around the bay. I see more people in the fine jewellery department checking out each others rear ends and nails instead of asking or checking on patrons. When you see a group of 5+ tourists around one particular G-shock section or a couple of Asian pointing out a particular model of the citizen eco drove watch.... what do you think common sense would dictate you to do?....your paid on comission tooo!.... This is why sometimes hiring under educated or hyper powdered (too much makeup on) staff members that barely pass high school or individuals who think they work at Prada but don't even know the difference between Prada and Burberry into a department store instead college kids looking for a chance to start works against the bottom line... I had a great experience shopping with my mom here and I purchased two items of fine jewelry, a necklace for her birthday and a Tahitian pearl ring for myself. I needed to have the ring sized, and a week later I received a phone call that the ring was unable to be sized and that I had to either have one specially made for me or return it. Since I'd already had some buyer's remorse I decided to have it returned. The salesman asked me if it was okay if he did it the next day since he was just about to leave for the day, and I said that would be fine. It is now two weeks later and I still haven't received a refund. I have a contact number that I have called repeatedly and received no answer. There's no way to leave a message with the department from the number. It looks as if I want to get my money back, I have to take the time to go down there. I will not be purchasing a large item from Macy's in the future! read more

She puts you at ease and helps you think through the process. What do you need, what are you looking for, what are your minimum requirements? I didn't feel that she was trying to sell me the most expensive thing or even the cheapest think(commission based). I felt that she understands that this is a commitment and an expense that shouldn't be taken lightly. I appreciated her patience and her honesty. She knew when to ask questions and when to give us alone time to chat. We were able to select the couch we wanted and are very excited about our delivery in just a few days. Macy's West is an absolute dream come true when compared with it's sister, Macy's East. Still...it's not *my* dream come true. It always comes through in a pinch, though. And speaking of pinching things, I pinched my cheeks together tight enough to squeeze into my old size 4 today while trying on clothes here, so that helped to put Macy's Union Square back in my good graces. Now for the **USEFUL** part: there's lots of designer, if that's your thing. The bags could be more varied and they could carry more classic lines and less trendy, plastic-y, overpriced throw-away purses. The juniors department is a nightmare tangle of polyester and acrylic, but I won't deduct points since I am clearly not a "junior", so I rarely have reason to set foot in the synthetic-fiber jungle that is the 5th floor. There are great bargains to be had on dresses if you have the time and the patience to dig, dig, dig (I recently purchased a Plenty dress for $29 and a Calvin Klein dress for $300 less than the tag price). Pass on the shoes unless they're having a sale of monumental proportions- they only carry the basics that eventually make their way to DSW anyway. So remember...go for the designer deals and shoe sales but don't bother with much else. They carry Betsey Johnson and Natori in the lingerie department, which are also draws for me. Pass on the boring regular merchandise and if you have a teenage daughter, for god's sake, don't subject her to any of the items in the junior department. Also, stay away on weekends when the tourists and suburbanites pack the place and you'll be just fine. read more

Review of furniture department on the seventh floor of union square store. When I went during the week, there was a great sale on- there was lots of choice and amazing value to be had. Like just a little more expensive than ikea, but has to be better quality coz it's Macy's right? I think so! I bought a lot of items in a short space of time from a helpful attendant on the 7th floor. They have "super deals" on really good items, with a lot of choice so it became a bit of a shopping blitz. The only downside is the delivery is very expensive. You get charged for every item you want delivered. I would think a flat fee would make sense. Gotta be better economies of scale here. read more

I shop at Macy's RELIGIOUSLY. but of all the macy's i like the one in DT and Hilsdale the most. why? this macy's has more than stonestown and serramonte (the ones that are conveniently located near my place with easy access to parking). There is just so much more stuff here and if you shop on the right days (unfortunately when they advertise SALE SALE SALE - its not that great of a sale) you get a great deal! Unfortunately when it comes to customer service...there were plenty of times where service could definitely be better. that doesn't mean there weren't times where i had great customer service. The sales associates that are actually nice and helpful - i ask for their name so i can find them again when i shop. that way they get the commission they deserve. their coupons used to be much better. They used to work on everything ! - well a lot of things but now everything is DOORBUSTER or SUPER BUY or something else. i mean i guess i can understand... gotta make money some how.. read more

I wouldn't even give them a rating. I placed an order and they canceled it because they needed more information, well I've been shopping with them for 12 years so how much more information do they need. I contacted customer service and she asked me for my number so she could verify my phone number. Seriously that's how you verify information because that's not a secure way to do it. Then she hangs up on me, I call back she starts all over and it's the same lady. Then she verified again and hung up on me so I called back again once again the same lady she literally wanted to start over again. At this point I've had enough just keep the order canceled because you don't know what your doing and I didn't feel very secure about continuously giving her my information. I've contacted my credit card company and told them they may want to watch Macy's because it seems like something shady is going on. I'll just order from Belks because at least I know my account is safe with them. Macy's may need to redo their way of business because I will never shop there again, I don't feel safe with the company and I will let my family know. The pretty bitches (who say hi when they see you on the dance floor at the BOC but pretend not to know you while "working") on the 3rd floor who sell Versace and Armani didn't have what we needed (or at the very least what we could afford) so we took their advice and headed upstairs. Trying to get help there was a futile exercise to say the least. We tried everything short of flailing our arms while yelling "We want to buy a suit!" In the end, we finally found Ron and he helped us which resulted in my platonic life partner in crime getting the black Hugo Boss suit he was after. read more

I give a 4 star review to this Macy's because it is such a SF icon. Upon meeting friends in Union Square, this landmark is usually referred to. "Meet you outside of Macy's", or grabbing some food/drinks @ the Cheesecake Factory inside. All of it indicates that this location is special, and I can't imagine Union Square without it! read more

HOLY CRAP... this is the largest Macy's I've ever seen and this is only the Women's store. The men's is across the street. The makeup counters are nearly as long as a football field. It almost seems unfair to clump all of Macy's into this review... but alas... I can only write so many of these reviews in one day.... I am a repeat offender at this store... another place where I walk by and have sales people waving at me... I swear I don't spend that much... I am just friendly... Some of the pluses... the crew at Urban Decay is great... I have had fun times trying and buying the make-up... THE crew at the food court -sushi counter - not the chefs... the waitstaff... (I have never interacted with the chefs) are really nice... I have fun times there.... The ladies on the 5th floor are awesome too.... 2nd floor ladies nice too... a little bit of attitude at the time... but I have no complaints on a personal level. Some of the negatives... THE MOST DISGUSTING BATHROOMS west of the Mississippi... gross gross... I rather make the trek to Nordstroms to use the Ladies Lounge... It is so hard to make a purchase in the Jewelry department. I don't like the new set-up in the cosmetics department... sensory overload... too crammed. Too many visiting vendors... and why aren't perfumes ever n sale anywhere... suxs! I used to get wrapping privileges for being a Platinum card holder... but now it is only for the black card Elite... boo! Macy's... love em... hate em... can't live without em... read more

The store is huge and generally clean. Macy's in general is a little pricey for my tastes and they rarely have anything I want. Sorry I can't be more helpful with the shopping. It's a chain store, so they generally carry all the same brands. Plus, most of the time when I visit this location, it's for the restrooms of a quick snack in their "food court." Speaking of the restrooms, over the years they have gone downhill. They used to be pretty clean, but over the last couple years this distinct urine funk seems to linger in the hallway to the restrooms. If I can make it, I just use the much cleaner restrooms in Nordstrom over on Market. read more

I love to get pampered by the lovely ladies of the Clarins booth! They are so helpfull and catering to my needs, they always pay time to listen, they prefer make me try a product with a nice face massage instead of forcing a sale and give me tons of samples!!! Some of the employees working at the grab and go beauty bar are kind of rude. I would ratter go to sephora instead. This location also have an amazing house and kitchen department that make me dream of getting an appartment in the city! They also host great cooking classes opened to the public. I really liked the spca partnership during Christmas, I just wish to see more dogs for adoption next years. The kittens were very cute but dogs need love too :) Also there is a food court downstairs and a cheesecake factory upstairs with amazing views of union square. I have NEVER EVER in my life had an experience like I had today. It was the WORST customer service I have EVER had in my life. I will NEVER go back there again. And if I could emphasize NEVER in bigger letters and caps, I would, cause I mean NEVER. Here is what happened: So I have never been that fond of Macy's to begin with. For some reason I feel like every time I go there, stuff just isn't organized in a way that flows. It's like you have to be in the mood to dig for what you want. Sure they have great sales, but the customer service to me is worth the extra cash. I had this gift card for over a year. I got it for graduation, and I can never find anything I like, and I always just end up at different places. So when I walked past the store, and saw a dress I just HAD to have, I went in, tried it on, and since it looked just as good on me, as it did the hanger, I bought it!! Half with the gift card, and the other half on my credit card. Since I was so in love with the dress, I was gushing about it to my Mother who wanted a picture. So, me being resourceful, got online to find it and send a picture. TA DA, it's ON SALE!!! Since it had been less than 10 days, I went to the store on my lunch break to get a price adjustment. I called ahead even to make sure they did adjustments, and the lady said "If it's been w/in 10 days, and you have the receipt, it's not a problem" Perfect! When I walk in I go up to the counter, tell the lady (Nancy) that I needed a price adjustment. She was friendly enough UNTIL...on her computer the dress was still the original price that I paid, and she said that sometimes the online price is different than the instore price. WHAT!?! It's the SAME DRESS!! and apparently since it's online and Macy's.com is NOT the same thing as Macy's the store, they wouldn't do anything. WTF Lady, not the day to mess with me. I pulled out my "customer is always right attitude" and asked to speak with a manager. This is just ridiculous. What major department store has a website that is not connected with the actual store. After waiting, 15 minutes, YES, 15 minutes for a manager, she said that she would accomodate me just this one time. After all of this it's been like 30 minutes for a stupid price adjustment :( Then since I used a gift card for half, they wanted to split the measly $30, and put $15 on a gift card, and $15 on my credit card. WTF?!?! If I took a YEAR to spend the $50 gift card, why would I want another gift card that had $15 on it!!! I was livid. I demanded that I didnt want in store credit, or gift card, and that I either wanted cash, or all of it back on my credit card. The lady looked at me and said "fine" with a deadly look that could have killed my cat. UGH. I will never be back, and I hope NO ONE goes back there. Pay the extra $30 and go to Nordstrom where they know what good customer service is. I think it is ridiculous that their website and store are seperate entities. Seriously Macy's you are NATIONWIDE. Get with the program, and be like ALLL the other major department stores, and be the same. I have never been so irratated in my LIFE!!! read more

I come here for lunch about 2 or 3 times a week. Going down the escalators feels like the damn things are grinding soup or something. It stinks so bad. The mens denim section here is one of the best I've seen in a while. While Macys can never compete with Nordstrom this one fares better than most other Macy's. You can find brands such as Seven, Citizens, Diesel, Energie, 575, Paper Denim, Antik, Evisu, Joe's Jean, Ernest Sewn & more. The only company that I dont think I saw was Tsubi. I really like this Macy's a lot, simply based on the fact that you can find what you want right away. There's one building for men. One for women! Each floor targets a different demographic, plus you get a lot of great food, whether it's Boudin's, Jamba Juice, or Ben & Jerry's. The Cheesecake Factory on the roof is a definite bonus. Plus, overall, you get the best selection of any Macy's stores in Northern California. Most of the other Macy's I've been too, including "The World's Largest Department Store" (aka the Nightmare on 34th Street) in New York City are difficult to navigate. But Macy's and Union Square S.F. definitely go hand in hand. read more

I think this is the most beautiful Macy's I've ever seen. I used to work at Macy's, so I've been in my fair share of stores across the country. But this one is clean, bright, airy, and organized - I didn't get to do any shopping here but I imagine it is much less stressful than Manhattan's Herald Square. Hate them. HATE THEM. I only go to Macy's when I'm desperate for something and have a budget. Their clerks don't know jack, are usually rude, and totally unhelpful. I have to walk around the entire section before I can find someone to help me bring down a shirt from the top display. Why do they stick clothes where no one can get them? Stupid. Forget the dressing rooms. The lines are horrendous on the weekends and the rooms usually stink. They also take forever to get the tried-on clothes back on the sales floor, so you have to walk past a teetering mound of rejects and hope you don't get buried underneath. read more

Do I really have to beg for service in the furniture department? Really? To wait 55 minutes to find someone to help me spend 6K on a bedroom set that was barely on sale? And he barely knew what he was talking about. I really just needed him to ring it up because after an hour, I had already figured out the sales and the best way to get the best pricing on the set I wanted. All I had to do was read the various tags and use the calculator on my cell phone to do some basic math. If I didn't like the set so much and the quality of the furniture I had gotten as compared to the furniture outlets I had gone to in SSF, I really wouldn't have even bothered waiting. read more
