*This is a public service message.* The next time you're at Macy's buying some support hose, tube socks or a 126-piece cookware set, and the saleslady asks that age-old, scripted question-- "Would you like to open up a Macy's account?"-- SAY NO.
"NO! I DO NOT want to open up a freakin' Macy's account. A billion times NO!"
Here are a few reasons why:
1) They have a ridiculous $1 "minimum finance charge" thing that gets tacked on as soon as 1 day after your purchase. Hello? I just bought this $20 item yesterday, and you already charge me a "finance charge" of $1, ONE day after? Ridiculous.
2) The online eBill arrives around 3 days after the billing cycle, and yet they automatically tack on the pesky $1 finance charge for the balance of the recent purchase, even though your payment is not due until 3 weeks later. What's up with that?
3) The eBill thing is ridiculously inadequate: it does not include transaction details. So all you get is a mystery number of what you owe, but you have no idea what the charges are for. You either wait for the paper bill or call customer service. Again, ridiculous.
3) Customer service number is touch-tone menu plus pre-programmed voice response set-up. "Please say your account number now." "I'm sorry, I did not understand what you said. Please repeat." How ridiculous do we feel when we have to talk to a recording? If you try to get connected to a human, you have to press 0 SEVERAL TIMES (try 3+), because pressing once only triggered the response, "I'm sorry, I did not understand what you said. Please repeat."
4) Customer service sounded like they were outsourced from outside the U.S. The dude I got had only scripted answers. He "explained" the same thing to me numerous times, without addressing the real issue. Maybe I should've kept him on the line and said, in a sing-song voice, "I'm sorry, I did not understand what you said. Please repeat."
5) Late fees are $15, therefore don't be late. Because, you will likely accumulate finance charges on the late charge.
6) They have 5 "methods" of figuring out how to calculate what your balance is. "Balance Computational Methods" are listed in a really strange sequence: Method 2, Method 5, Method 6, Method A, and Method B. Tricky bastards with their fancy-ass, senseless sequences! Each method is a variation on the same theme of maximizing the screwing of the unfortunate customer. (APR is 21.60%)
I rarely have issues with the other loathesome credit card companies because I pay off the balance every month. However, the Macy's card is a royal screw in the ass in too many ways, brimming with sneaky tricks to trip the customer into overpaying. Why deal with this, just to supposedly earn a discount or "reward" on future purchases? Usually everything is excluded from the discount anyway, except for items like Macy's brand grandma-style high-waisted underpants and mass-produced teflon-coated spatulas. Too many asterisks, exclusions and weird charges. Therefore, I am canceling the damn card. Grrr.
On the back of the account statement is the fine print, printed in 3 pt, 65% horizontally-scaled (those bullet points are now ovals), 50% screen tinted, condensed font. At the top of the page, is empty white space which they could've used to expand the fine print, and perhaps made it more legible. Instead, they garnished the space with this 60 pt-size, ugly serif font that was horrendously kerned by an amateur desktop publisher: "WE APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS." I'm sure you do. I imagine what's also printed after that, in invisible ink, is "MUAHAHAHAHA."
