This Macy's is an anchor store for the Hilldale Shopping Center and for the most part, is your standard Macy's location. We have popped in a few times when dining nearby and the experience with service, or lack thereof unfortunately, is fairly consistent. We spent close to 10 minutes wandering around and not once were we greeted or acknowledged, and we actually needed help. Finding someone was a bit tough too. The store is always well stocked, clean and in good condition. No issues there. Pricing is standard for a Macy's. Not a lot of discounts or sales on the major brands. Overall, it's a Macy's. There for when the need arises. This location is a solid 2.5 for me. read more

We've been stopping in at this Macy's for the last few years whenever we grab lunch across the street. The store condition has declined so much this past year and I'm not sure we will return. For their high prices, the store is in considerable disarray. We chiefly go to look at shoes, and it has been consistently an absolute mess in the shoe section, with high price tags for cheap merchandise that is scattered and strewn about. You have to step over open boxes, sizes are not in the correct place, and I've never seen an employee in the shoe section. This past week, we went to look at dresses and there was no signage and very limited availability of any formal dresses for plus size women -- and this is Wisconsin... We went to the "Last Chance" upstairs clearance section and it was worse than the shoe section. Tripping hazards on the floor, items strewn about and disorganized, shelves looked like they'd been looted. This seems to be a store wide problem and we just left without buying anything. read more

I needed to return an item I had ordered online in the wrong size. At the return desk the associate was very helpful, checked to see if there were any of the same in stock in a larger size. There were, and she directed me exactly where to fine them. Once in the Women's department, I got a little turned around, so asked for help at the check out desk. A lovely associate named Nadja walked with me and located exactly what I wanted. She was so lovely and gracious and helpful. My whole time in the store was pleasant, easy transactions. I've been shopping at Macys since I was a kid in NYC. It hasn't changed that much. I used to blame the messiness to being over merchandised. Can't really do that now , as you can tell they have a lot less. It's just poorly run and understaffed. The store I get was post holiday but they still have people coming in. Some areas were pretty out of shape. That being said I found a pair of pants. Went to the counter and gave a big beautiful "hello" to the young person behind the counter and they looked at me like I was fucking stupid. So I pause and take a breath and say "this is the point where you say "hello" back". I get that it's hard to find good help , I swear I do, but common manners should be a basic in retail. You can forgive a lot of bullshit if at least they start with "hello" or "did you find what you needed". That would be what I would instill in that team . Elevate the customer. My brother and his fiancé stopped by to shop couches and we're ready to buy on the spot. However JUDY one of the store associates rudely and unprofessionally approached us interrupting our conversation seemingly due to the fact that we were sitting on the couch. There are NO signs prohibiting sitting on furniture. Overall our interaction with JUDY left us feeling singled out and harassed. She was very passive aggressive and rude. Located right in the heart of Hildale. Macy's is a huge store with 3 floors. I always like looking around their lower level at the home and decor section. They typically have some pretty good sales. Sometimes I do think their sale signage can be confusing and a little sneaky. Overall I've had good experiences here. The store is clean, organized and well kept. We have been here a few times now and really like the location of this Macy's. It has a lot of other nice stores around it and to have a department store there too is great. We have never had any bad experiences when here, but nothing that stands out as great either. The lines can get long sometimes and not enough workers to help that you have to wait. They said yes but they would have to talk to management and a manager would call me. I had to deduct a star for the LOW A/C that blows in this place. I thought I was simply shopping hard and sweating easily. But I happen to log o to check in on Yelp & then took the time to read the other reviews and saw everyone is complaining about the lack of air. Look! I know I can shop and I get focused so to secure a deal - I can get competitive like a heat seeking missile - now you can see why I thought it was just me. On this past trip... I sweated my curls out and we were there for at least 2 hours. I expect women shoes to be all over and a mess - especially when you get to 70% off. Hilldale Macys does not staff the lower level where bedding and houseware is located. Signs direct customers to go to the main floor for help. But the main floor staff are handling check out and not able to go downstairs to help, even if they knew anything about those items. So it is disappointing. Similarly my elderly mother could get no staff assistance in women's clothing. Why bother to go there when it has become essentially unstaffed ecept for check out counters near the main floor doors? I dont shop at department stores often, but when I do, Macy's has the best selection, especially of fashionable menswear. Whatever I cant find in stores I can find online, and if necessary, return in store. They are more expensive than some of the other stores, but there are a lot of sales, coupon codes, etc. At my most recent visit, there were long lines, and Ryan was patient and pleasant with every customer, no matter how complicated. I appreciate good customer service. This particular location was originally a Marshall Field's. I miss the big mall atrium with the Christmas decorations, but it is otherwise very similar. read more

This store is a mess! And the staff is oblivious to everything. Should have been a 2 minute shopping experience since I knew exactly what I was looking for. Men's Levi's 502 32/30. There are 5 or 6 large tables for jeans in the men's dept. I found the table I needed. It was piled high with half folded jeans just like the other four tables near by. I spent a couple minutes digging for the jeans I needed. Didn't find them. So I ended up spending about 35 minutes sorting and folding jeans before I actually found the size I needed. The staff casually wandered around to hang up shirts on racks and stood around talking to each other behind the counter. Nobody asked me if I needed help. I left this table half organized with folded and stacked jeans. Also, the guy at the checkout tried to charge me full price. Then said he could sell me a second pair at half price. Macy's at Hilldale has changed, it is organizationally challenged. The shelves and racks are jumbled piles of unorganized clothing. Rummaging around takes a while so be prepared to spend a while sigting and sorting to find something. Very disappointed that Macy's at Hilldale does not carry modern nor career plus size clothes. I asked the clerk where working women purchased career clothes she haughtily replied "online". Apparently she nor Macy's cares if I spend my money at their store. I left informing my friends I was boycotting Macy's. To my delight, I discovered Boston Store. Not only do they carry a wide variety including career/modern --- it is on the first floor by cosmetics! They didn't shun plus size to the rear corner on the 2nd floor! I told the clerk that Macy's didn't carry plus size modern/career clothes. She replied the demand was so high at Boston Store they had to expand their selection. With the ongoing construction of turning the old indoor mall into an al fresco shopping destination, it may feel weird to walk through the front entrance to see only Macy's and Ula Eyewear remaining in the old walk way where Santa's village used to be on display. The store itself is fine, dated as no changes has been made since the first time I stepped foot in here when my mother took me in middle school. Restrooms give it a hauntingly old feel, like a scene from the Ring or something. The only thing they have going for them in the physical store is the MAC counter. The store is run down and the carpet looks filthy. The store exudes a feeling of sadness from neglect. The layout is unattractive, the dressing rooms are deeply worn. Service is mediocre. I do not blame the employees. Macy recently closed many stores nationwide. I was shocked Madison wasn't included. Let's hope headquarters steps up and improves the look, feel and quality of our local branch. read more

I swear I only find myself in Macy's if it's wedding-related. Usually to buy a gift for someone off their registry, and occasionally when pals are looking for dresses to wear to a wedding. For me, their prices are a little too rich for my blood, at least in the fancy dress department. Another thing that doesn't really motivate me to go on my own is that it's difficult to find help when you need it. S: *mentally slams head on imaginary desk* I will say that when I have purchased wedding gifts in store Macy's does do a good job of packaging it nicely in an attractive bag with tissue paper that you could use to deliver the gift if you were in a pinch or needed to save time if picking it up on your way to the wedding. You were the "fancy" department store with the upstairs dining room, had Santa Bears during the holidays, carried well-curated fashions for young and old and had the best -- the best -- shoe department. I've been to this store a few times, and yesterday's visit was nothing unusual. The clearance racks were in disarray, and there was a HUGE amount of clothing by the fitting room, waiting to be put away (normally I paw through it but the rack was too full to move anything around). I went to the ladies room and could not believe the smell in there. It was perfume, really strong, heavy perfume. I thought I was going crazy until I washed my hands and saw the perfume tester strips by the sink - there were a couple between all the sinks, which looked intentional to me. Then, in the fitting room, there was more of the same stuff floating in the air. It gave me a headache and basically chased me out of the store. read more

I'm not much for shopping. When it comes to the holidays I use my tactical thinking to get my shopping done. I came here on December 23, yes two days before Christmas! I had a jacket for my wife that had been ordered online. The jacket was a size too small. I went into the store at about 7pm. The place was a madhouse. The parking lot was filled with Priuses and the infamous co-exist stickers... The occasional early 90's Volvo claimed a spot here and there. I made it inside and couldn't find a jacket one size larger. So I asked if they had something was of like, kind, and quality. The cashier looked and looked. She found nothing. She advised that the warehouse doesn't carry the jacket anymore. To my luck a manager just happened to walk by and I asked her if she could help us. I was desperate to get my wife another jacket. So we look and we find a similar, not same jacket. That jacket rang up for $147. The original was $104. She matched the jacket price and I even received 10% off. Macy's. I've been to Macy's countless times and have had mixed reviews, depending on the department I'm in and who helps me. This review is specifically for my experience last night while shopping for a suit for my wedding. My fiancee and I showed up around 8pm, about an hour from closing. She was determined that I leave with a suit since we're getting married in a couple of weeks. The selections were decent, but I was targeting a dark grey color, slim fit, but not too fitting. I finally found the suit I wanted, but naturally, the size of the pants I needed wasn't available. Heather walked by and offered her help and looked up that they have 2 of the pants in my size in stock. They weren't in the rack in front of us, so she took the time to look in the stock room. Brian measured me and actually made me realize the jacket I was wearing wasn't even the size I thought it was. Heather came back with bad news: she couldn't find the pants in the stock room. Brian disappeared and came back in a couple of minutes--he found the pants on the dock. Not yet processed into the system. Go figure! This saved us having to order it online and waiting 5-7 days for it to arrive. The lights were shutting off and we were getting kicked out, but Heather and Brian really helped us out last night. I wanted to give Macy's more stars. I wavered between 1 and 2 stars, but based on my last experience there, I can't give it anything but 1 star. I WANT to like Macy's, because it's convenient to be able to buy many different things in one place. I went there last fall with the primary intention of buying perfume for myself (just another bottle of Clinique Happy). First, however, I stopped in the men's department to buy my husband some dress shirts. A sales associate said hello to me, but then watched me riffle through shirts for greater than 20 minutes, as I was trying to find my husband's size, without offering to help. Next stop was handbag department to get a bag for an interview. This department actually did please. The girl working there was extremely helpful and attentive. Last stop was Clinique counter. One associate was doing a makeup application. The other was checking someone out. Waited awhile, just needed to get my bottle of Happy and go. Then the "other" went over and chatted with another person for awhile, telling me she'd be "right with me". Then went into their employee area to do something else. I seriously waited more than 10 minutes for someone to help me. Finally, the associate who had been doing the makeup saw me, asked if she could help me (as she's trying to check out the person she did makeup for), grabbed my perfume, and checked me out right after. Getting service was like pulling teeth. Maybe it is because I was wearing scrubs ( I am a physician) but I am a firm believer that all people should be treated equal. Especially at Macy's! read more

This Macy's apparently got the short end of the stick compared to other Macy's stores. I used to think that Macy's was more upscale until this Macy's replaced Marshall Fields (which was excellent) in Madison, WI. The highlight of Macy's is definitely their sales - you can get some pretty good deals if you go at the right time - and they offer many ways to get at the sales, such as offering the option of donating clothes. The make up counters are nice, but service is not always readily available. The juniors/young adult section is definitely lacking, and the formal dress section often has damaged dresses without discounts for their damage. read more

I almost never shop at Macy's for some of the very reasons other reviewers listed. I was given a gift card early this year and finally decided to stop in ... a decision I still regret. I was in the purse department, the in house Christmas music was overshadowed by the ear splitting rock music coming from the MAC cosmetics area. (I cannot imagine the noise on the opposite of the store.) It was annoying to the point, I went to another level of the store. While in the accessory department, I notice items haphazardly all over, no organization, you had to dig through piles to find anything. The women's department was not much better. I was disappointed in the quality and selection. If not for the gift card, I would not be shopping here, nor would I recommended it, especially for families. The sales guy was a great help in finding the dress slacks I wanted. While trying them on, I discovered a gum wrapper in the pocket, which led me to examine the pants more fully. The back of the knees was creased in a way that indicated wear (rather than hanging), so someone obviously bought the pants, wore them at Thanksgiving or the funeral, and then returned them. The sales guy was apologetic, but since I don't want used wool slacks (yuck), I left and bought a pair on-line at a large, national distributor for less money (you know, the one with the name that suggests rain forests). This specific Macy's falls short of what you would typically expect from a Macy's. The inventory is a bit limited and the place could use a remodel to spruce it up. The saving grace here for me has been Jessie at the wedding registry department. I received a gift for Christmas that I needed to return and did not have a gift receipt. The item was from online which I didn't think would be a problem, yet I was told by the sales associate that they did not accept returns without receipts. After some research on my own online Macy's does in fact accept returns without receipt from online for a store credit,, which was what I wanted in the first place. From someone who has worked in retail 15 years, make sure your employees know store policies, especially return policies in January when gift returns are more common. Also, the baby dept. was a mess recovery wise and missing promotional signs. Not too impressed. read more

I went in today to return a coat that didn't fit me right. The first worker that helped me was in the men's department. She said she couldn't return my coat because I took off the tags (I brought in the tags and receipt with me). Then I said it's fine I'll find someone who'll help me. I called customer service and waited around a hour to talk to a representative and asked her about the return policy. The representative said Macy's policy for return is as long as you have the receipt they'll accept any return even if there's not tags. I told her my return was denied because i took off the tags. She told me to try my return again and if they said that to me again just ask for a manager. She was helpful and kind! I went upstairs to the women's department and asked for a return on the coat and she started giving me attitude and said "we can't give you a return because the tags are off so how are we going to try to sell this coat again." I told her after the person downstairs wouldn't give me a return, I called customer service and they said I was eligible for a return. The lady then started accusing me if I even purchased this coat! I gave her the receipt before I even handed her the coat! She also said she needed to see more than just that so I went to my Macy's account online and showed her my confirmation! She started smelling the coat and said "we're never suppose to take any return without tags and we don't know what you have been doing with this coat. How can we sell this coat again? It's a loss for us." I asked for a manager because I couldn't listen to this sh*t any longer and after I asked for a manager she finally said "I guess I'll do this for you, but only just this one time because this isn't allowed." After giving my return she scoffed and shoved my receipt back to me! The fact that she wouldn't even call me a manager shows how bad the customer service is! Another fact, she returned the customer before me (white female) clothes without tags! I'm asian! Not trying to say she's racist, but she was white and returned the white customer before me clothes without tags. I had my tag for the coat and the receipt!! I didn't get a glance at her name tag because I was harassed the whole time and she kept smelling the coat every second but her associate id is 71115670! Never again will I shop at this Macy's nor will I be shopping online because of this harassment I faced today! Macy's - Department Stores Near Me - Madison, Wisconsin

This store's seemed so disorganized. No staff available to help. I returned a Levi's jeans that I bought and the associate and manager gave me hell for not having the tags of the item even though I have the receipt!!!! The return policy of Macys states that I can return an item as long as I have the receipt! They were able to look up the item on their system and make a tag with the barcode and return label but they still told me that they can only issue a refund for the lowest price of the item and NOT for the amount that I bought them for. I was really furious about this store and have not come back ever since. I dont recommend coming to this Macys. read more
