Context is ok but Jazzman has more stock, lower prices, and much better service (and I like more of their clothes). As others have pointed out the music is excellent, and I don't even like jazz. One serves up a bland, predictable fare of polos and khaki while the other ventures into the a bit more adventurous territory (sometimes to a fault). While your taste may vary, I highly recommend a stop into the Jazzman before venturing over to the lowest-common-denominator that is the Gap. Jazzman saved the day today!!! I needed a belt to complete a suit for a wedding I'm attending this weekend and one of the employees in the store helped me by asking about my outfit, sharing some suggestions of what was on the rack, and making sure they had my size in the one I chose. He was helpful and patient. While shopping at Jazzman, I was in a bit of a crisis because I had also just come from the dry cleaners, which was unexpectedly closed, meaning my wrinkled suit couldn't be steamed in time. He offered to steam it for me and was really nice about it. SERIOUSLY, he saved the day. Thank you kind Jazzman employee! As a side note, they had some excellent sales in the store (some leftover from Maxwell Street Days). Unprofessional! Although the store opens at 10:00 am, two employees were unlocking the front door and walking in at 10:08. I asked, "Don't you open at 10?"..reply..."yeah, give us a couple minutes to put our jackets away". They shut and locked the door, leaving me on the stoop. It's 18 degrees and they don't have the sense to invite me in and have me browse while they go through the opening sequence?! Parking is nonexistent for State Street businesses (most of which are useless), making it a chore to shop downtown, yet these guys don't recognize how important it is to keep customers. I left, and won't return. I knew what I wanted and would have been out the door in less than 5 minutes. Good retailers would love to make money with minimal effort. If good service is important to you, while you over pay for merchandise, don't shop at Jazzman. read more

After reviewing some of the other reviews I felt compelled to jot a couple lines. My first couple times in the store I was extremely happy and thought I had found my new favorite store. Unfortunately very few of what I have purchased has withstood the test of time. When you are paying these types of prices there is a certain level of quality that is expected. Simply the best casual men's clothing store in Madison. I have been shoping here for many, many years. I always gets compliments on the cloths I purchase at Jazzman. I take friends and family there for upgrades to their wardrobes. I even have family and friends from out of town (Boston, San Fran, NYC) who keep Jazzman on their "must do" list when visiting Madison. I like this store a lot. Recently bought a Ben Sherman suit for 50% off (!) during the anniversary sale. The staff was helpful in just the right way, without being pushy. The middle-aged gentleman who helped me knew to give my girlfriend and me time to think it over, even when I was being stupidly indecisive. They offer helpful tips without being patronizing or phony. My one quibble is that the young guy who measured my suit pants for the tailor didn't seem to know what he was doing and the pants came out a bit too long. The guy there said he would take care of of me for free though (send it back to the tailor), so they redeem themselves in the customer service dept. If their staff was a little better at taking measurements, they'd get 5 stars. Even still, I highly recommend Jazzman. read more

The store has an impressive collection of casual to professional clothing for the well-dressed man. For the slimmer fit gentleman, this is one of a handful of options in Madison (Context, H&M, American Apparel). I tend to come here for more casual clothes but they have a well edited collection of sport coats, suites, jackets, shoes, belts, ties, socks and other accessories. Jazzman offers in it's small space a wide variety of clothing types and styles that are rare to see anywear else. Additionally, their inventory is always fresh. I almost never find the same thing there one month to the next. My personal experience with the staff has been great. They are sensitive to my comfort level with regards to style and have helped me develop a better sense of that style. I now feel more confident shopping for clothes in general, even outside of the Jazzman. I find the clothes to be on the higher end of style at a medium to high price range, and so I don't buy everything there of course. I mostly go there to pick up a nice peice of clothing/small accessory to accent my collection. In contrast, one could go up the road to CONTEXT. But everything in this store is completely unaffordable. As a designer and working professional, I'm not that well compensated and even if I was, the prices at CONTEXT reflect a pretentious attitude toward what clothing/fashion should be. Kind of like shopping at Century House for furniture, which seems to reflect the attitude that good design should be expensive, since the general public is not sophisticated enough to appreciate, and therefore should not be able to afford, good design.
