My sister and I had a terrible experience visiting the shop today. We were going to return a few pieces she had bought me as a birthday present that unfortunately didn't work out. This was my first time visiting the shop, and I was so excited to see the beautiful selection and good prices. I already had my eye on several pieces that I was interested in purchasing. My sister approached the sales person at the desk (Kat) to ask how to go about the return/exchange, and was told very rudely that unless the clothes were purchased within the last 7 days, they cannot be returned, no exceptions. My sister expressly asked back in July when she bought the clothes if they were returnable and was told yes, as long as she had the receipt. There is no way we would have known about the return policy, since it was not made clear at the time of purchase and is not even included on the receipt. Instead of an apology, we were told that we should have checked the website (where I can't even find the store's contact information, much less a return policy). Had we known about the return policy, we would have made it a priority to return within the week, but this was never made clear. When we asked whether we could sell the pieces back to the shop, we were told that they were out of season and that we would have to wait until spring to even try. As a first-time customer, I am deeply upset by the treatment we received from Good Style Shop. I understand the need for store policy, but also expect that these policies be made clear to customers. (I still have not seen the return policy anywhere in print). I wish we had been treated with more sympathy by staff, instead of being made to feel that we did something wrong, or that we were asking for too much. Sometimes, prioritizing the customer relationship and making things right are more important than sticking to policy. Based on my experience, I will never support this store. All it takes is one bad experience to lose a customer for life. read more

Great if you're a size 0-4. To say the selection is non-inclusive is an understatement. There is a large rack for dresses and skirts; I'm a size 6-8 and couldn't find a single skirt and maybe three dresses that were big enough for me. Obviously this store is allowed to have their niche of clothing for very thin people, but just an FYI that it may be worth skipping if you don't fit that niche. Also, the owner's replies to any negative feedback is pretty cringeworthy to see (see Google reviews and in the shop). I noticed this shop after having drinks at the Robin Room one weekend evening and finally managed to stop by during the day when it was open. Definitely worth the 2 mile bike ride for me! The selection is well-curated and to my taste -- it manages to be vintage but relevant to a modern aesthetic and current trends. Some American vintage stores can lean a bit campy and in-your-face vintage but Good Style lives up to its name, at least for me. I appreciate that each item has its own label which dates the piece and gives a small description. Makes you feel like you're really looking at a piece of clothing that has its own story, rather than like you're digging through hoards of old stuff to find a gem. Each and every piece is a gem in its own way! Everything is very reasonably priced -- most items range from $15-$35. I can easily see the stuff being sold for a lot more in bigger cities (ahem, Brooklyn flea). I think it's great they're making vintage clothing accessible and affordable -- I hope that's part of their philosophy. My only slight complaint is that the sales associate who worked the counter was quite hands-off in terms of customer support. I was probably there for at least an hour but not once did she interact with me outside of an initial "hi" when I entered the shop. I prefer to be left alone when browsing but there was no sense of "let me know if you need help" established during the experience. Mind you, we were the only two people in the shop for the most part. That said, it's probably for the best I don't live in Madison because I would probably come here way too often. read more

I had one owner vintage 50's, 60's, 70's Pendleton, Woolrich and some late 80's -early 90's Canvasbacks jackets and other lovely items that I really didn't want to drop off at Goodwill. I made at least 5 call/messages in the spring with no call back. The one time someone answered the phone he said owner would be in Fri. PM so I drove 45 min. to Madison. The buyer was not there, took the afternoon off. Drove them home, thought I would try again in the fall. Called last week, left message; again no bother to call back. Fortunately the owner of Stillgoods was interested and I will be taking them to her tomorrow. It wasn't even a 24 hour turn around. Not getting my business....or my recommendation. I love colorful clothing. I love vintage clothing made with quality fabrics and dyes. This store has a few items that meet that criteria. There are some funky pieces here but theyre the minority. The prices are way too high. I use a good measure of "would someone in this era pay $20, then should I pay $20?" $16 was the low price end of things and thats the price for a high vintage item at st vinnys. The fellow working there didn't seem to want to interact with customers, only his hp computer. If you are an average sized American woman-12, then you will not find anything in this store. The highest size I found was 10. I know that the 80s/90s had people who were over size 12, it's insulting to a large population to disregard them and carry zero vintage clothing for them. If your business model is exclusionary of non thin people, then your model is not for me. read more

They had stuff in all size ranges which is nice as I am usually L/XL and sometimes there is nothing for me. The owner was really chill and nice and gave info about an upcoming thrift market. This little vintage shop is where it's at! They have clothes for both men and women, a variety of shoes, jewelry, and records. I went in today to look for some last minute holiday gifts and I left with a bunch of goodies! They have a great record selection and although it is small, the variety is wonderful. They have them organized so they are easy to look through. I was greeted right when I walked in and the girl working was really friendly when she rang me up. I had to walk away from some really, really cute blue suede booties :(. Even though they were reasonably priced, I had to remind myself that I was there to buy gifts for OTHER people. I went in here just to "check it out" and left with an arm load of stuff. Everything was reasonably priced. Yeah not thrift store cheap but you're paying for someone to do the digging for you. HOWEVER in bigger cities or on etsy you'd find the stuff I bought for 2 times what I paid here easy. Staff was nice but definitely not super outgoing or anything, which I don't really mind. This place is under new management. The owners moved out of state and have turned it over to a friend who plans to continue in the tradition of it's previous owners per an article in The Onion. The store is neat and clean and the staff is very pleasant and friendly. They apparently have live music come in during the month and also have artwork from local artists which is great! You should check it out. Update: They have moved to 817 E Johnson St. It's a nice location with on street parking. This is only 8 blocks from the previous location. Instead of going up to near the square, turn on Livingston and go 3 blocks to E Johnson. Take a right and it is on your right. This place gets better year by year. read more

Their new location on East Johnson is bright and cheery with street parking readily available. The shop's employees are styling (naturally) and super hip but don't be intimidated; they're incredibly helpful and inviting. They have a variety of well-organized, interesting pieces from sweaters to t-shirts, dresses to heels and you'll be able to try on anything you'd like in the two small changing areas at the back of the store. The store has moved since the images so do not expect that when you come in. The store is smaller than expected but filled and very organized. I suggest taking a block of time dedicated to looking around through all the racks. The staff was wonderful. The cashier really helped me find something I loved. I love the Good Style Shop. Unlike most vintage clothing stores where you must sift through heaps of overpriced garbage (aisles full of gaudy, thick polyester, flower patterns that no one would ever wear and probably never did), Good Style Shop selectively presents the best looking stuff from various eras for a very good price. Lately it's seemed to lean a little heavy towards 90s clothes and would be nice to see some more choice 70s-80s attire. It reminds of Painted Bird in San Francisco - my favorite vintage clothing store when I lived there. Madison is very lucky to have something that is equal in vision and quality to its big city, west coast counterpart. read more

Good Style Shop is one of the more awesome used clothing stores in Madison. I've been in there once to shop and once to see bands. Both experiences were great. The shop's selection is geared towards utility over kitsch, and it isn't hard to find awesome stuff. I snagged a vintage Badgers sweatshirt and a Red Dog beer shirt (a true gem). The owner, Pete, is a great dude, as are the workers. All were very pleasant and didn't hesitate to say hi/introduce themselves. The shop is organized nicely and, while it does gravitate towards women's stuff, there's plenty for both genders. I'd recommend Good Style Shop to anyone looking for a fun thrifting experience in Madison! read more

I respectfully disagree with Gina on this one :) I adore this place and have shopped here since it opened about a year ago. The owners and occasional shop employees are very nice, helpful, and non-intimidating. The clothes are reasonably priced for vintage; cheaper than June 3rd (on E Johnson off state), more vintage-y than rethreads (though not so 'out there' that you wouldn't wear them today), and far and away cheaper than anything in Chicago. I also shop at saver's and goodwill a lot, but it's nice to have a place in-town where I don't have to dig for an hour to find good pieces. If you tell them of a piece you're looking for, they even make a note of it and will look for it on their clothing hunts. Plus, the whole supporting local small businesses thing is important. The shoes are also great, and they do not just carry tiny sizes like a lot of shops. They have a good record and tape selection and a good selection of men's clothes (don't mean to gender the music selection by placing it next to the men's clothes comment!). As for the shows, I frequent them and tend not to stare at people's outfits :) However, the music is not always for those unfriendly to the noise genre. But bands like Acid Mother's Temple have also played. The space is small, though is generally adequate for the crowd that shows up, and this is the only place in town you can see some of these bands/performers. If you're interested in this type of music (Wet Hair, Julian Lynch, Expo 70, etc.), become Good Style's friend on facebook, they update about shows a lot on there. read more

One of the biggest problems I have when shopping for vintage clothes at thrift stores is that good pieces are few and far in between. I've changed my mind about this place - it's improved a lot over time. I visited when they first opened and found the inventory pretty ho-hum - mostly 80s kitsch. I didn't go back until a year later when I was killing time in the area and stopped in. Their inventory had improved significantly - more more diverse, and with much less emphasis on "ironic"/tacky stuff. The prices are very reasonable. And I'll echo what several others have said - the shoe collection is really impressive! Huge assortment, in good shape, in a variety of sizes (i.e. not just ultra-narrow). I left with two nice 50s/60s button down shirts and two pairs of shoes. I still miss Epoch, but Good Style deserves good business! read more

Had my brother not spotted this storefront on our way back from brunch I would be without my over-sized leopard cardigan and insanely hot gold-studded heels and would HATE MY LIFE. Sartorial drama aside, this place is reasonably priced for when I don't feel like digging around thrift stores, which, let's be honest, is exactly where the clothes are coming from. Nothing too special, but if you're incapable of buying new clothes like I seem to be, it's a bit of a relief. The dress selection was a tad disappointing, maybe they'll have more of my taste once warmer weather hits? Some of the shoes, on the other hand, are the kind of very nice finds that I'm generally unlucky with while thrifting. The owner is SO nice, btw. Anyone who can distract my brother, with friendly conversation, from the fact that I keep finding things to try on after claiming for the fifth time that I'm ready to check out is a saint in my book. read more
