I was very luck to find ReThreads on a day I really needed them, because tomorrow I'm going to a family reunion I co-organized and I decide Mr. casual better do a little better. I saw lots of clothes I that I normally don't see because I'm an average size. Some very nice shoes with leather soles I'm coming back for that are perfect for dancing. I wasn't planning to get shoes but there are so nice. This store is wonderful! They have lots of awesome finds. I've found at least one or two vintage designer items for reasonable prices every time I come in. The owner is lovely and very kind. Highly recommend checking out if you love high quality vintage clothing. So far I've scored a pink Marc Jacobs dress (made in Italy), a 100% wool Pendleton jacket, and a pink wool J Crew blazer. read more

I like to stop here every time I visit Madison because I always have the best experience! The staff is wonderful, very friendly! I have found some truly unique items. I found a vintage 1950s 3/4 length blonde mink coat which I will keep forever!!! Just stopped again today and found a very cool vintage black leather skirt. The checkout woman said so many people tried it on and it didn't fit. I was so happy to find another keepsake piece. read more

Perhaps 1 Star is a bit harsh, but honestly I don't think it's worth wasting your time browsing here. A self-proclaimed "boutique", it appears to have all over-priced and outdated items. I've been to Rethreads at least 15 times, 3 of those time being to sell items, and I have yet to find anything worth purchasing. If you are trying to sell items here, they are quite picky. My best luck has been selling severely outdated designer clothes that are completely out of style. If it has a pricey brand name they will probably take it regardless. Unfortunately you can also find Forever 21 and H&M there, which is probably sold at a higher price than it's actually sold at in stores. The staff is very friendly and the store itself is kept well enough. Honestly, use your money next door at August. It's a cool, new streetwear store. read more

Seriously bad. Would never buy or sell here again. First of all, the woman who owns it has been rude to me every time I have come in to either store. Second, she doesn't know squat about designer labels or what women are wearing now. Four times now I have taken in designer handbags is great condition that she has refused for the dumbest reasons. "It just doesn't say anything to me." (A Karl Lagerfeld bag retailing for $300.00.) "It won't sell in the fall".(A cheetah print, new suede Dooney & Bourke tote.) "I don't think anyone will buy this." (A Kate Spade tote. Sold it the next day for $100.00). Oh, and my favorite - "This one is out of style". (A classic black Michael Kors tote, brand new, that I got as a gift, purchased 3 months before. Took it to another store and got $75.00 for it.) It's one thing to be rude, but to be rude, stupid and clueless as to your target market is just a joke. I used to shop there often and the employees were always nice, but ever since this lady took it over - well, if you don't find any good designer bags in either of the ReThreads stores anymore, now you know why. read more

Re Threads is well-organized, clean, and chockful of bargains both designer and regular. Sure, some of the stuff may be a bit pricier than Goodwill, but I dig the philosophy behind Re Threads-- the clothes are not donated to them, nor are they sold on consignment, per se; rather, they pay people in either store credit or cash up front. I've never sold stuff to them, but I have friends who have, and that's worth a small premium to me. I've found Camper shoes with the tags still on them for $19 (retail value: $170 via Piperlime), an Anthropologie dress for $17, and Born knee high boots for $16, among many other deals. I think perhaps its prime real estate leads to it being more "picked over" than St. Vinnie's or Goodwill, but in general the selection rotates frequently enough for me. Finally, I wanted to comment on their staff. On a recent trip into the store, I saw one of the cashiers going out of his way to assist a disabled shopper, basically acting as a personal shopper and bringing things over at the customer's request, helping him find what he needed, etc. From what I overheard, he did this completely voluntarily. At the same time, the other cashier (perhaps a manager on duty?) was politely and respectfully listening to two homeless people pitch what sounded like adspace for Street Pulse (a newspaper that the homeless volunteer to sell on the street-- some of the money goes directly to them). I've seen similar situations in businesses where these folks have been ignored or dismissed out of hand-- it was quite beautiful to see the opposite take place. I really, really wanted to get something from this place. It was cheery and clean, and helpfully sorted out everything by size and color. But I could NOT justify some of the price tags. I mean, I usually do most of my secondhand shopping at Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads, so I know what the upcharge for these stores should be. The shirt I ended up falling in love with was a Cynthia Steffe for $28, and at the end of the day I just couldn't do it. Do you and your wallet a favor and go to the Goodwill down the street. I can't believe how low the ratings are for this place. I've shopped there so many times and just love it. However, I guess the reason I love it is for the designer things. I mean, I got a pair of Silver jeans that were brand spanking new for $29, and I think thats a great deal since they usually cost more than $100. I got an H&M suitjacket for $9. The boots there are usually really cheap and amazing. The place doesn't buy anything unless it's in great shape so what do you want? I got a pair of Dolce & Gabana jeans for $35. It's wonderful! Perhaps I like this place more than the usual person because my body type is long and slim and it's hard for me to buy jeans I like without spending a fortune. ReThreads is a great place to buy brand name, designer, and vintage clothing of all sorts at a reasonable price! I've gotten Supreme and vintage Ed Hardy in great condition. There is a huge range of shoes with Birkenstock and Balenciaga, I really like this store and it always delivers! After reading some reviews I realize that their is a ridiculous amount of bad reviews slamming this store because they didn't buy their old clothes. Do not take those reviews to heart! Yikes. I remember a couple years back when I was moving, and took in a bag full of clothes...and got a measly $15. And included in that bag-o-clothes was some nice stuff! Like a $200 (barely-used) coat. I was shocked, but took the cash and ran. But today, all I needed was the cheapest t-shirt they had. I forgot my gym shirt and just needed something to get me by. I struggled to find a t-shirt under $9. These are ratty, used t-shirts we are talking about. I found a terrible green shirt for $5 and got the heck out. Oh, and the staff? Terrible. I've worked retail before, so I get it. Retail sucks. But at least fake it. The two young women in there today were rude and looked uncomfortable. For men's clothing, your options are limited. The prices are also too high. There seems to be a great selection of women's clothing, but I reckon the prices are still a bit high. read more

Re Threads brings the West Towne mall to you....and urban outfitters, which is right down the street. Re Threads works by buying clothes from Madisonians for 33% of what they plan to sell the item for in cash, or 50% in store credit. Therefore, what you see people wearing around State St. is what you will find at Re Threads. Though Re Threads does carry quite a bit of vintage items, most of the clothes is from Urban, the Gap, Forever 21, Old Navy, etc. You may find a sprinkling of higher end designer stuff from people who shop at Bop, but this stuff is in the minority. The prices at Re Threads are not cheap, but definitely cheaper than buying the stuff new, and most things are still in good condition. For example, a pair of Target jeans were priced at $9, a Gap v-neck sweater for $11, and a Forever 21 blouse that probably retailed for $15 was $10. Overall, it's nice to have a place on State St. where I can sell clothes and make a little cash. Also, the business model guarantees that merchandise is always changing, so it's worth checking out once in awhile. read more

I used to love this store, but about 6 years ago the prices rose and the selection became smaller. There's almost no selection for larger straight sizes, let alone plus sizes. I still like to walk in and look around, but I almost never find something I love, which used to happen every time I went in. Stopped in on a weekend afternoon with a friend who was looking for a newsboy cap for a costume. One of the employees was kind enough to greet us and when we mentioned what we were looking for he said he didn't think they had anything along those lines but walked us over to their hats to help look. Ultimately we left empty-handed, but we appreciated the guy's help and him taking the time to help look instead of just pointing us to the back of the shop. read more

Any location same story, we actually brought really nice, clean, barely worn winter coats and a perfectly new wool mens sport coat to her store. After we shopped for a while and found some things we might like to trade, and after sort of pulling our offerings to the side and going over them when we were not looking, she stated all of our goods were too old....and she was not interested....funny since they were all like new and up to date styles.....I would just warn you, don't shop to trade until you here what the BOSS has to say about your trade ins.... Either they have a huge turnover with staff and the training process is non-existent or they are completely disorganized and no one has a clue as to what is going on!!! I have made 4 trips to State St in hopes of selling some real gems and each time I got a different story on the process!!! No exaggeration here! Former assistant manager here. Rethreads in Madison has REALLY gone downhill since gaining new management in 2013. The entire vision/ enjoyment of Rethreads used to be the amazing finds and affordable prices. This is no longer the case, customers don't get enough money or store credit for their quality products and the types and brands of products that are at rethreads are no longer unique, but simply 'high end' and small. Thrift shopping is my favorite hobby but after enough horrible customer service experiences here...I am no longer a customer here and I do not recommend it. read more

The people who work there are nice. But they are VERY PICKY about the clothes they take and will not donate what they cannot accept. Moreover, if you are looking to sell, they will give you 2-5% of what the items might actually be worth. Its a great way to get rid of unwanted clothing quickly. But, if you need the money, don't count on it here. Also, you have to wash them or make them look nice just to get your 2-3 bucks for the item. You would think they would wash the clothes themselves. read more

I've been several times and after this past experience I will never be back. Compared to what they sell items for, the amount you get is criminal. Staff were friendly and helpful a year ago. But when I came back a month ago, their selling sign was out but when I walked in the clerk said they didn't buy after 3 pm. Change your damn sign then! I came back the next day at lunch with a designer jacket and the woman there was extremely unpleasant. She looks at my jacket, finds a speck of dirt on the hem and sneers "oh no thanks. Bye". I can't tell you how many times I have wondered in here only to find that these clothes are worse than what one can find at Goodwill for 10x the price. Vintage things do not mean anything that was pulled out of a corner from 10 years ago. So I went in on a Sunday, pry my fault for not calling first but, they were so busy. I walked up to the "sell your clothes" counter and the lady told me they weren't excepting clothes today because they we behind from all the clothes they got yesterday. Of course I was upset so I may have been a little more bitchy to the lady then I needed to be. I was just very upset that they had the "sell your clothes here" sign out on the street and then didn't accept mine. They told me to come back tomorrow. So I just ate my loss and came back the next day. In my bag of clothes I had 4 brand new pairs of dress pants still with the tags on, turned in my clothes and they said they could not accept them due to the damage, I told them they had never been worn and the tags were still on? When I asked them to point of what was wrong she couldn't even tell me anything... Pry worst store to buy/sell clothes ever. Better selection at Ragstock. read more

For people buying - this is a decent place. Although a hot or miss, depending on what is in stock and what you are looking for. For people wanting to sell - almost no customer service. 1st attempt to sell - sorry we don't take clothes in on Sunday, but any weekday we can take items 2nd attempt to sell - Oh sorry we don't take items after 4 pm. It has to be before 4. Of course I did not go on a Sunday! 3rd attempt - Went in at 1 pm, on a Thursday (not a Sunday), well before closing. Oh sorry we are done taking clothes for the day, you should come in early. First thing in the morning would be good. So the bizarre part is that these 3 attempts to sell happened in a 10 day span. Perhaps the person who sent me back the first time could have given me all the information on buying items, and said it RIGHT. It would have saved me 3 trips. I'm close to moving and don't have patience for this kind of nonsense and attitude. You really need to get your customer service skills back on track; you have some good selection - if you do change store policies, it would be good if you can update your website, and keep them somewhat consistent. Store policies should not change so much in a 10 day span!!!!!!! read more
