I had such an amazing experience at MAC thanks to Alexa! I came in completely confused trying to find a new concealer, and she went above and beyond helping me figure out not only the perfect concealer, but also a moisturizer, foundation, and even makeup wipes that were better for my skin. I mentioned the wipes I had been using before, and she kindly explained they actually weren't the best option because they can dry your skin out. I looked it up and she was 100% right. She really knew her products and took the time to educate me instead of just trying to sell me anything. What stood out the most was how patient, kind, and professional she was the entire time. While she was helping me, another customer interrupted saying she was in a rush and needed help immediately. Alexa politely asked if I minded waiting for just a moment, quickly helped the other customer find everything she needed, checked her out, and then came right back to continue helping me without missing a beat. You can tell she genuinely cares about customer service and making people feel comfortable. Shopping for makeup can be overwhelming, but she made the experience easy and enjoyable. I rarely ever go to Southland Mall except for my weekly chair massage at Art of Reflexology (review posted) or i know i have to have extreme patience. Don't bother going after 12:00, that's when all the rude, inconsiderate, entitled people come out.... In any case, had some time and headed over to MAC @ Macy's since i needed a bunch of stuff. I usually go to the MAC store on 4th street in Berkeley where the staff are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Well i took my chances going to the Southland one and sure enough, it confirmed everything I already suspected....i agree with Clarisse C and Janice's review. Rude! There were 2 MAC 'ladies' helping customers as i was looking around waiting for some assistance. I got my make up done by Eric for my work's holiday party and he did an amazing job! He showed me step by step what to do (since I never wear makeup other than eyeliner and gloss). I am kind of disappointed with the Macy's here, it was like a small Sephora as soon as you walk in, bit it's VERY messy, the staff didn't approach us at all in the perfume section and they were busy looking at each others Instagram post. I did need assistance however I figured I'd go elsewhere. Now the cool part of this Macy's is that it has a small section of high end, they had Moschino, MCM etc. but VERY unorganized and in a glass shelf which didn't have anyone around either. I walked into the store and straight to MAC bare faced (as I always do when I'm going to buy makeup for testing purposes). I stood at the register waiting to be serviced. NOBODY spoke to me for like 10 minutes, finally customers started coming and they began helping them after I had been standing there for now a good 15 minutes. So when I realized they weren't going to acknowledge me, I opened the drawers where the products are and began searching for the lipstick I wanted to purchase. Only then they all ran to my assistance. One lady stopped doing a full face and asked if I needed help. I then replied, no thank you I'm going to Sephora.... she was like "But I can help you now..." but I'm like "I've been standing here a good damn near 20 minutes and you're now deciding to help me because I started to help myself." And I left. This is the 2nd time I have received this treatment from MAC. So I have now switched all of my products to whatever Sephora carries. I found a great dupe for Heroine by Anastasia Beverly Hills it's called Rage. And it's actually a little more pigmented and only 1 dollar more. I'm done with MAC. read more

I went in on a day I was bumming around so yenno, the whole pony tail and sweats ordeal and there was only 1 customer ahead of me and I was not acknowledged ONCE. Bitches. The other customer being followed wasn't even going to buy anything and was being hustled into buying things she didn't want. I really needed some things, so I couldn't really just up and leave. I had my make up done for the first time on March 31, 2012 and i LOVED it...Melanie was the artist who did my make up and she was a joy... She walked in with the theme of the Saturday and I said I hope she isn't the one who will do my make up and it ended up being her...but i was VERY HAPPY and had a good time laughing at myself and with her... I would definitely come back here to get my make up done...she gave me good tips on make up and products from MAC... Most of the staff were very pleasant and laid back... When I sit and stop and think of my favorite places to shop The Macys Mac counter at Southland is right up there with the Gap store at the Maria Square believe it or not. Why you may ask ... Southland is really not the place to be but for a few reasons. reason #1 its close by when I need a lip gloss fix reason #2 i never have issues finding parking reason #3 and probably the most important reason in my book most of the artist there are ethnic and have a good idea on what colors work well with my skin tone which has been an issue at other make up counters I have purchased from in a far less mutli cultural area. Sorry but I must Yelp the truth. I was feeling a little down in the dumps the past weekend and thought a quick trip to my favorite counter would do me some good. I was out of my current favorite gloss loud and lovely ( so very michelle) and need a fill me up. While I was there I was checking out some lip colors and said hey you know what I want to try a red lipstick why not. usually not my go to shade. I had a very friendly artist help me. I wish I had grabbed his name . he was think handsome little gay guy about the same skin tone as me and he walked me to the exact color he thought would work ... low and behold a few swipes of the lip brush and a healthy blot and I have a new pretty hot shade. I was a little not sure but he assured me it worked with the yellow under tones in my skin and he loved it . my cousin and sons agreed that it was fabulous and so I went for it. After briefly talking to her, another associate approached me and wanted to check if i was OK. Customer service, check. When it comes to makeup, I am a disaster and I am so so glad I met Edna. She is AMAAAZING at what she does and I love how informative and knowledgeable she is of products and its benefits. I've had mixed experiences with this department. Some days, I've been treated very nicely by the employees, and other days the girls are incredibly rude and treat me like I'm too ugly to help. WTF? This last time I stopped by, I was interested in purchasing a product called "pressed pigment". I fell in love with shade "Moth" and searched for a clerk to help check me out. I was approached by an employee who notified me that they were out of stock (for the entire line) and probably wouldn't be getting it back. Why advertise a product that is apparently discontinued? That's a little weird to me. I still come here for other products, but I left the store that day kind of bummed. read more

3 stars based off my experience today with one rude worker, and one worker that was exceptionally nice. I initially came to the MAC in Southland to exchange my studio fix foundation, because a lady at the MAC in Bayfair totallly didn't match my sister and I to the correct shades. I came here to exchange an NW30 which was totally the wrong undertone and way too pale. There wasn't anyone else at the MAC counter at the time, so I was immediately offered assistance by a worker named Barbara. I told her that I was there to exchange my foundation, I told her what number and kind it was and told her my problem with it. She immediately told me that the shade I had looked like it was correct. Let me start off by saying that I'm pretty sure if a foundation makes me look pale. I told her that I wanted to try out the shades NC35 and NC37. I knew that either one of these had to be my shade because I got matched at the MAC store in Stoneridge. I just didn't have my items to return at that time. Instead of helping me choose between those shades, she decided to try a NW33 on me. Let's just say that was too red and not good. Then she tried a NC 42 and told me that it looked pretty good, but I was obviously wayyy too tan and scary looking with that shade. So then I asked her again about trying NC35/NC37, but no she insisted on trying NC40, then trying NW 25. All of which weren't good matches. For some reason she decided to try an NW18! You heard me right NW18! If an NW 30 makes me pale then how in the word is an NW 18 gonna work on me? She put the NW on me and of course it made me pale, but a med/dark skinfinish on me to try and fix it. Afterwards, she kept saying that she's finally found the match for me. Then she disappeared for a bit and came back saying that she finally found the NC18 bottle in the back. I didn't even tell her that I for sure wanted that shade! She was just trying to get her commission off the sale before she had to go off to lunch! Not only that but she was super rude in asking me what powder I use. When I told her that I used a drugstore brand she instantly told me that that's what the problem might be. My problem definitely isn't the powder its the freaking shade of foundation. I ended up telling her that the shade on my face was lighter than the shade on my neck (obviously not supposed to be like that), and she told me all I had to do was blend it out. Then I told her that I still wanted to try the NC37 just to see how it would suit. She told that she would get someone else to help me since she had to go lunch. I heard her talking to her co-worker about what I wanted. I heard her say these exact words, "I matched her with an NW18, and I don't know why but she wants to try the NC37". Uhhhh rudeeee. Don't talk to me like I'm dumb and I can't hear you. The new worker that started helping me out was super kind, and did what I asked for. She put NC37 on the other side of my face so I could compare it to the NW18. Without a doubt the worker, myself, and my friend all agreed that it was the perfect match for me. The worker was also kind in helping me remove me face, and put the entire foundation on my face for me. If Barbara had listened to me then I would have been at the counter for 5 minutes instead of 30 minutes, and she would have gotten commission for my purchase. I found a better foundation match than the worker, and I definitely didn't need to be treated so rudely and bashed on for using a drugstore powder. There's no problem in not using all MAC products. read more

Its weird how one experience can change a perspective. Its also weird how desperate the economy is making people. I went last week just to purchase a new sponge for my studio tech. I always switch half way through. It should be a simple purchase. I was given the run around, then told I should consider buying some brushes instead. Oh, really? Brushes work with studio tech foundation? Yeah, no. Then, I got home to realize she had given me the wrong sponges, even after she took extra long to make sure it was the right one. I know all the girls here. There's this one girl named Sarah, she's brutally honest on the makeup you should wear. She helped me pick out a nice peach blush last week. These are some of the most patient girls in the world when it comes to makeovers and customer service. It's unfortunate that this MAC has to be in Southland mall. The ghettoist mall this side of the bay. Each girl has their own way of doing things. The have great customer service and have been going here for years. We went to Macy's to get my daughters makeup done for her birthday. We got lucky and got an appointment with Wendy from MAC. I must say that although she was incredibly busy she made our time there VERY enjoyable. She is a certified makeup artist with tons of knowledge. My daughter told her a few of the basics of what she wanted and she got to work on her and made suggestions and getting her input the whole time. She was truly a joy, super sweet and seriously just a very pleasant young woman. I normally don't yelp unless I believe someone deserves it or really doesn't and this woman is very deserving. I admit we had such a great time that I would even go back to her if I had a special event to go to. I am writing a review here because I just bashed MAC Valley Fair. It was at this MAC near my work that I realized, thanks to the helpful girl who found me the right shade of powder, that the old broad at Valley Fair pulled a bait and switch on me. I saw this lipstick on the example table and I was like, "I have this lipstick but it looks really different here." The gal at Macy's MAC said that was the closest color in that hue and wrote the name of it down for me. We compared it to my nearly empty tube of the discontinued lipstick I'd tried to match, and it was exact. Then I get to work and realize what I bought is not the color I'd tried at Valley Fair. As I mentioned in my other review, the old broad at Valley Fair started acting weird at the register so I'm thinking she found it was out of stock and just switched it on purpose with the next closest color, thinking I wouldn't notice. Anyhow the girls at MAC Macy's in Southland were much nicer and much more helpful and get a 5 star review from me. They also weren't so gobbed up with makeup they seemed like wannabe models. I only wish I didn't have to drive up there again on my lunch hour to get a new lipstick. there was a clown at my prom. she was doing her thang and grindin' up on everybody... aayyyyeee! ogawd, that clown was me. i got my makeup did here. they sure as hell don't understand the term "natural looking makeup", no matter how much i emphasized that it's what i wanted. the outcome was not cute. on top of that, the girl who did my makeup definitely didn't give me her full attention. she "BRB'd" every 30 seconds!! she was helping other customers at the register, but the other girls who worked there had their full attention on their clients. so why was my girl the one who had to leave and help other people? could they not have taken turns? my friend's makeup was finished in 20 minutes while i was still sitting there after an hour and a half. waiting for my makeup girl to brb. b/c of this, i was an hour late to prom. i've been stung by the grudge bug, can't let this go. i resembled a clown, but it's okay, it was dark in there! only with the lights off did i find confidence to rub my booty against countless crotches. read more

Its a pity that some have had poor experiences here, but in pretty much all of my cases [ im a M.A.C addict] at this counter, I have been given great customer service. There are so many great artists here: Eric, Missy, Ali, Edna and thats just to name a few!! They do their best to at least greet each customer who arrives at their counter. Keep in mind, if its really busy they may be preoccupied but usually try and make the effort to agknowledge your presence. And hey, sometimes when its really busy, they may not have noticed you right away, so all you have to do is POLITELY approach them and ask. (Even if they are with another customer] They tend to be pretty accomadating. Try and remember not to act rude or ghetto, because that doesn't usually get you anywhere!!! They give me honest opinions on their products when I ask and are always helpful. They know their products and most don't tend to be too overbearing in pressuring you to buy. Also, I practice my own makeup, so I tend to be very picky. With that said, I am extremely impressed with the work/skills many of these artists display. Keep in mind that there are free lancers who may be new, but do their best to help and there is almost always someone who works that specific counter to help you out. Slowly I saw one by one of my favorite artists leave for bigger & better opportunities, it was when I started to feel less accommodated to when I would try to shop for products here. Maybe they did spoiled me the last few years but the end result is I didn't receive the same level of customer service I was accustomed to. They are quite busy on the weekends but they need to have a better system of who would help people simply buying products and those handling appointments. Even on a regular random day where it's not so busy, I still find it hard grabbing the attention of someone and get what I need. I really don't want to downgrade my rating but this counter simply left me undesired to come back after being consistent with purchasing from this location for 3-4 years. read more

I made an appointment here for my makeup for a maternity shoot. I made my appt at 12pm for my Photoshoot at 2pm (I was told the service is from 30 min-1 hour). When I got there, there was only ONE employee working and that employee was expected to do my makeup while also taking care of customers. This was in December, so it was crazy busy with everyone doing their holiday shopping. I arrived on time, but didn't get my makeup started until 1pm, and even then, my makeup session was constantly getting interrupted. The MUA who did my makeup was very talented and very sweet. I have absolutely no complaints with him. But I don't understand why they would book me if they knew only one person would be working that day. My makeup wasn't done until 2:30pm, totally missing my Photoshoot which was very upsetting since it was the last chance I had to get a maternity shoot before having my baby. So not only did I waste $70 at MAC that day, I also lost the down payment to my photographer. read more

I feel like I work there. I always get a random make up person that I will never see again who knows nothing about contour or prices or products. I just show up do my own thang, buy my make up n cut. the eye liner and mascara always work cool for a month and then that expensive ish turns to junk. the return policy sux, the product can't be more than 25% used and life time is 90 days but check the receipt bc it can say 180 days and they need to honor it...Urbany Decay is better quality, only a few bux more like 2 dollas and the make up ppl actully know about their products and PRICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I have been a Mac customer for a very long time and this not only due to the quality of their make up but more importantly the quality of the service I receive. (I must admit that not every location that i been to provided me with excellent customer service, but at this location (southland mall) i received that excellent service from one in particular young lady.) I came in to Mac to day and I was helped by the same young lady that has been helping me for the past 2 months. since the first time she has helped me I been wanting to write her a review but do to my busy schedule I wasn't able to. after today I decided that once I go home I will write her a review. Anyhow, Naheed (i hope the spelling is correct) by far has made my every visit and amazing experience. she is always asking me question to figure out what is the right product for me and is always updating me on new items that comes in. she is not pushy like some sale rep I have encountered, rather she really cares for what i need and want. in addition to product i buy i always taker advise on product i have not yet tried and every time i do buy something new from her i'm never disappointed. But it started with a Z. She was sweet and even though they do get commission on sales she would be honest and not let me buy things I didn't need.
