I brought in my older model laptop which was having an issue with the display; the screen wasn't working at all. I work in IT, so I did just about all of the troubleshooting possible for a software issue. After exhausting those options, I called the apple store; they told me that because it was an older laptop that they wouldn't service it, but they referred me to MacMedics. I brought it in and explained that I'd tried several different software remedies and that I believed it was a hardware issue, specifically with the monitor as I could hear the system load up (the "bell" would sound) and I could hear the letters from the keyboard being recognized when pushed on the password screen. They charged me $40 for an assessment and told me they would call me when they had an update. Four days later they called to tell me that they didn't know what was wrong with it and that I could come pick it up. Upon arriving at the store, I asked them if they had even attempted to isolate the issue down to a specific component, they hadn't done much at all. I then asked if they attempted to display the screen on a tv or other screen to verify that the screen was the issue, which they hadn't. They then told me that the laptop that I had came from a grouping of macbooks that was known for having issues with the "logic board" and that apple was sued because of it, so I shouldn't waste my money on troubleshooting and just buy a new laptop. I left there and found a small repair shop that was able to switch out the monitor and low and behold, it works. I'm writing this review from the laptop that they told me that I should just throw away. MacMedics has plenty of good reviews here, but buyer beware; depending on your issue, they may tell you to replace your item instead of doing a little more work to find a cheap and easy solution. read more

I really wanted to give this local Mac repair shop a try. Based on what I heard over the phone, I'm having 2nd thoughts. I called to report a keyboard connectivity issue with my iPad Pro. I was told by the gentleman on the phone was that MacMedics is a licensed repair shop able to do whatever the Apple Store can do. I then explained how my Apple Smart Keyboard was not being recognized. The upfront diagnosis was that hardware on the iPad must have been malfunctioning. As a result, the whole iPad would have to be replaced. If the iPad were to be out of warranty nothing could be done. He recommended I check online if a warranty remained on the iPad. Here's the problem. He assumed Bluetooth was the problem. I explained that the Smart Keyboard connects through the three magnetic pins on the side of the iPad, not Bluetooth. "Oh!," he replied. Perhaps he was thinking the Smart Keyboard for iPad was a third-party Bluetooth keyboard or perhaps the Bluetooth Apple Magic Keyboard for desktop Macs. The phone call ended on a sour note. He said, and I paraphrase, "You may just have to replace your iPad." Just for the record, my iPad has never been dropped, has always had a case, has no scratches or physical damage, and passes all the official diagnostics tests. It never occurred to this gentleman that the issue could be the actual keyboard. I took it to the Apple Store Genius Bar the next day. They replaced the keyboard despite it technically being out of warranty. No questions asked. Problem solved. Total cost: $0. read more

I originally brought my laptop here as it has been having some unfortunate issues with the keyboard. However, they told me it was done for and I should get a new computer. I took it to the Apple store instead because I didn't believe them, and lo and behold my laptop works today. I'm glad I didn't take their opinion and buy a new laptop. The individual who assisted me didn't seem very willing to help (even though I was aware of and ready to pay all fees to open it/run diagnostics), and nobody present knew how to open my MacBook. (Which is a difficult task, but I expected more than one employee to know how to). Overall, I guess just be warned if you have a bigger issue than normal. Went to get my Macs screen replaced. Nice people but they quoted me $150 more than the Apple store. So I just took my computer to the Apple Store the turn around was a few days more but I saved more of my hard earned cash. Last week my iMac died, and I was at a lost. Call Apple only for them to tell there was nothing they could do. I cried all weekend long and decided to try to find a local business to get a second opinion. I found MacMedics online and decided to call Monday morning. They told me to bring it in, and I did, and within 15 minutes the check my Mac and said well the good news is that your hard drive is in good shape, bad news all your data is gone. To my surprise, they were able to restore the OS within 15 minutes, and I was on my way. My Mac is working like a charm, and the best part is that it only cost me $49.00. The guys were professional and didn't spend time giving me bologna. They will be forever my Mac team for repairs and products. Thank you, MacMedics, for saving the day! These folks are not very good communicators. Went in to replace battery for iPhone 6+ and was told that selfie camera was not working. They suggested mailing it to Apple repair for new screen (for free) but instead of fixing, Apple sent them a new replacement 6+ for me. Very tedious to recover security codes and passwords for dozens of my apps, some of which are still not working properly, plus I lost 60 albums of downloaded music that had been ripped and stored on a laptop that I no longer own. If MacMedics had simply cautioned me that sometimes Apple, w/o consulting the customer, replaces older phones rather than repairing them, I would never have bothered to part with my phone. Big headache and waste of time that could have easily been avoided. read more

My Procedure: Installs of 8GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive in a MacBook Pro 13" about a month ago. Comments: Wow, this system has been flying since the upgrades! I run Parallels with Windows 7, 64-bit, in Crystal Mode. Even with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Visio, and Project running in Windows (which is a pretty heavy load), the experience is incredible. I looked one day and found that I had started about 20 programs between the Mac environment and the Windows environment without a problem. Before the upgrades, both environments were sluggish and jerky, with just a few programs running in each. Now that each has 4GB RAM allocated, they both are wonderful! I have set up Parallels to start the Windows environment when booting the Mac and just leave Parallels running. I've had no problems with speed or crashes in either the OS X environment or in the Windows environment. MacMedics in Lanham did an excellent upgrade. They were fast (I got the system back the next day) and quite reasonably priced for what I got. I highly recommend you visit them for anything Apple-related! read more

My toddler picked up my MacBook Pro while I was charging it. Subsequently he dropped it on the floor and broke a pin inside my charger. I took it to MacMedics and they charged me 220. That's a lot of money but Mac's are expensive computers and when you buy one you understand that upkeep can be costly. I was advised to take my laptop to MacMedics by Apple associates for a data backup. They first told me $399 and then quoted me $499 2 MINUTES later. I thought that he was going to buy me dinner before he screwed me, but no deal. I LEFT. I took my computer to MICRO GEAR in Fairfax, VA that same day. They fixed my computer for $79!!!!! MacMedics charges doctor's fees, not computer repair costs. Avoid the malpractice suit, find a second opinion. The more desperate you are, the higher the cost. read more

I am very disappointed with my experience with MacMedics, especially considering that I'd heard great things about their service. My laptop had an issue, but was still covered by AppleCare. I took it to the Apple Store and they said it would be 2-3 days before they could even start to work on it, and I didn't want to be without my laptop for the better part of a week. The MacMedics website says, "MacMedics is fast! We try to have any needed parts on order the same day you check in" Fast, that was what I wanted! When I stopped by, the timeline they gave me sounded good - they'd look at it the same or next day, then they'd order any necessary parts, which would arrive about 24 hours later, and then they could complete the repair. That meant I would get it back 2-3 days after I dropped it off. Though their website promises, "As soon as we take a look, we'll call you and let you know what we've found, and what our proposed service plan is," I received no updates. I finally called 48 hours after I dropped off my laptop, and they said they were waiting on the part they'd ordered. I called again the next day, and they had just received the part... but weren't sure they would be able to complete the repair before they closed. They didn't, and I was without my laptop for a three-day weekend. When I called after the weekend was over, they'd had my computer for more than a full week, and they still had not begun the repairs. It wasn't until the end of the eighth consecutive day without my laptop that they told me (again, when I called and asked) that it was repaired and ready to go. The good news is that the repair seems to have corrected my issues. However, their promises of quick service, and projections of a couple of days, turned into over a week without my laptop - worse than what I was trying to avoid when I ditched the Apple Store. Even if you acknowledge that there was a holiday weekend, they still had my laptop for nearly 5 full business days. And based on when the part arrived, I assume they didn't even diagnose my problem and place the order until a couple of days after I'd dropped my laptop off! That's not quick service. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was the lack of communication. I did not receive any updates on the status of my repair unless I called to ask, even after multiple days had passed. I don't expect constant contact, but it would've been nice to get a phone call or email to say, "We're backlogged on work and couldn't get to your laptop today, but we'll do it tomorrow," or, "We opened it up and found the problem, we're ordering the part," or, "We've gotten the part, and we're hoping to get it installed later today." Instead... silence. I wanted to support an independent service provider over the Apple Store, and was enticed by promises of quicker, personalized, friendly service. Instead, I spent nearly 8 full days without my laptop for a simple diagnosis and repair, without any updates or apologies. read more

I first made an Apple Store appointment, but emailed MacMedics for a quote on the cost of repair. They replied promptly. I realized I bought Apple Care, brought it in, was helped without a wait, and had it back and fresh and fixed in 27 hours. Brilliant! Found this repair shop via Apple's website. I was told in person at the Apple store that the damage on my computer could be repaired & was covered by AppleCare, but was unable to have it fixed then because it needed to be sent out and I needed my Macbook Air. So, I contacted these guys. Boy oh boy. They are unable to tell the difference between accidental damage and damage caused by malfunctioning of a computer. I have been working on computers since the age of 9 (27 now), and have 8 years of professional Desktop Support under my belt(working on both Apple products and PCs), and presently work as a Sr. Desktop Support technician; I know when hardware issues are accidental and flawed by design and/or the hardware fails. Anyways I was told there was no way the damage to my computer could possibly be anything other than me damaging the system and power cord(basically they called me a liar); they could do nothing unless I paid, and their prices are beyond unreasonable. Seems like they want to rip people off in my opinion. I would recommend no one ever go to these guys; go to the Apple store. It's cheaper and they know what they're doing. Hello all, Don't go to Mac Medics! It's a scam. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro. I have very little knowledge when it comes to computers so I thought I would save money by going to an Apple affiliate, rather than going to the Apple store. I recently bought an Iphone 10 and was not able to download music from my MacBook. Called MacMedics, the rep. stated that it would cost at least $100 just to look at and prepare to wait for maybe 1-2 hours. I called Apple Tech. They took my hard drive (on a macbook pro) and installed it on a iMac, saying that the laptop couldn't be fixed they charged $1300 and took off $100 for the trade in claiming it was useless. I had no problem paying because the amount was close to the price on the website, but as soon as i got my computer was having problems. A third party informed me there was a "sector problem" on the hard drive. They fixed it for free and acted like I messed up the computer by going to "questionable websites". I have several friends who have macs and routinely visit the same sites with no problems. Bad experience. I would recommend a mom and pop type computer repair service read more

We've had great experiences here. When my geriatric eMac was dying, they managed to squeeze a few more months out of it, and when it finally winged its way from this world, we purchased a refurbished MacBook that we are still using many months later. Service has been relatively quick, the work has been done well and helped us get a lot more life out of our computers. Yes, the work is pricy, but we've had work done on my husband's PC that was equally pricy for what they did, and often the work wasn't as good on his. You get what you pay for. read more

Its been a over a week since my visit to MacMedics, so I'm not writing these comments out of fresh anger or frustration. But I was very disappointed with my experience with this business. The employee I interacted with was named Mike, and while he was friendly enough, and seemed knowledgeable, he ultimately did not resolve my issue in any way whatsoever. He did a few quick scans on my MacBook, told me the hard drive needed to be replaced (which it did), sold me a new one for $225, replaced it, and sent me on my way with assurances that this would solve my issue. It did not. So, within an hour of visiting the store, I was calling him back with some questions. We spoke briefly on the phone, he gave me a couple suggestions to try, and told me to call him back if that still didn't work. Well, his suggestions didn't help me resolve the problem. So I tried to call back again, and this time I ended up with a different employee on the phone. I asked to speak to Mike, and this other employee told me "Mike has off today". Now, maybe they had switched shifts, and had missed each other completely. But I said to the other employee, "Mike has off today? I was at your store hours earlier and talked to Mike. And I called and spoke to him as well, and I'm trying to follow up on that conversation because Mike told me to call back if I have any more questions." And then this other employee copped attitude with me. In all fairness, maybe he truly believed Mike had off that day. But instead of going and asking, or looking at the schedule, he fed me a line of crap and then got rude with me when I called him out on it. I asked this employee to leave a message for Mike to call me back.....Mike never called me back. I had Mike's card from my visit, so I tried to email Mike directly as well.....no response. So yeah, that's the kind of service I got from this place. They didn't solve my problem, lied and gave me attitude on the phone, and didn't return calls and emails to help resolve my issue. I'll be taking my business elsewhere in the future, and I recommend you take your business elsewhere too. They might seem convenient, but I'll take good quality service and follow thru over convenience any day of the week. read more

Our company bought a bunch of iMacs last year, and they did not have enough RAM or SSDs. The problem was these specific iMacs are glued shut. No user upgrades. We called MacMedics where I was transferred to Mike. He said he could upgrade them for $200 a piece. I brought them over Friday at 4:45pm, they were ready for pickup Monday at 1pm. Macintosh support in Prince George's County. Took my 2006-era MacBook Pro here after it died. They convinced me it wasn't worth repairing. Instead, I ordered a replacement model. They added memory to my specifications and copied over the data from my old hard drive, something I couldn't have done on my own, while charging only the base $99 for labor. We had a bit of a misunderstanding over the cost of the memory, which I'm dinging them a point for, but it was resolved to my satisfaction. I'm looking forward to dealing with them on all my future Macintosh issues rather than driving to Annapolis or Columbia. (I wish I'd known about them a lot sooner as it would have saved me a lot of mileage!) read more

I called and spoke with a gentleman about replacing a dying fan on my 17" Late 2008 MacBook Pro. First off I was told that it wasn't worth it and was asked to identify the color of the keyboard. The procedure would entail making a diagnostic, finding a used fan that may have barely any life left, if any; disassembling the "whole" machine, and reconstructing the computer again when finished. He estimated the whole procedure costing around $240. The attendant laughed and recommend just buying a whole new machine. I called and spoke with someone at a Simply Mac store and they told me that I could order the part over amazon for under $30, unscrew the computer myself and it'd be a very basic procedure. When the part came, they'd even walk me through the dynamics if I had any questions. This organization is just after your money. read more

I paid for prepaid hours, the tech guy ate them up in 2 sessions to the tune of 1300 bucks and gave me a lot of advice about using google searches to figure out how to configure various problems. Thanks for that, I guess. He never did fix the problem he was originally brought in to address. He was condescending about how we keep up our computers and while I got some advice I could use, there was really no reason to spend 1300 bucks for it. If you've got money to burn, go ahead. I saw from the Apple Service website that MacMedics was the nearest service vendor near me in Lanham. My Seagate hard drive that I had only used twice before it was not recognized by my computer. After many useless calls to Seagate (who wanted me to call Apple on their own product) and Apple saying I don't have AppleCare so they can't help, I went to MacMedics. The guy took a look at the disk said the fan isn't moving and it probably died and that I should send it back if I still could. He did this all for free! I agree with other reviewers that service is good, fast, and they know what they are doing. read more

When my iMac died I purchased a new one and was referred to MacMedics by the apple store to do the data transfer. I was a little leary of giving someone else my computer with so much personal information on it. I looked on the web and did a little research on their reputation first. I am very pleased with their professionalism. They seemed very knowledgeable and completed my data transfer in less time then promised and for substantially less money!
