My sense is that more knowledge gets clipped off when he trims his nails, than i'll ever have with the 20+ years of using macs. He is iOS incarnate and has helped me remotely as well as on location. Jeremy, the Macman, is my go-to-guy for hard drive repair. I've had two very important hard drives fail and I went to the Macman for help both times. The last time my hard drive failed I was in North Carolina and overnighted Jeremy the drive. I could have taken the drive to someone in North Carolina but I trusted Jeremy and therefore sent him my drive. He examined the drive (free of charge) and though my drive was dead and therefore I couldn't pay him to fix it, he took his time to explain the problem to me and referred me to a data-recovery specialist he knew. My hard drive was crashing. I reviewed the symptoms with Jeffrey, who had returned my call in less than five minutes. Symptoms were repeated disk permission repairs, refusing to wake from sleep mode, taking forever to re-start or shut down, often not shutting down unless I used the power button, and overall slow performance. Jeff confirmed that my guess about my hard drive dying were accurate. We discussed options, and he explained to me that he didn't do the type of repair I needed, and he recommended me to a very good shop. He told me that Apple had identified a problem with some hard drives in computers like mine and suggested I call them first to see if the issue was part of that repair program. I would be truly lost without MacMan. I am a designer and my IMac is what helps me pay the bills. When my hard drive took a dump, I first took my IMac to another Mac storefront company. I will not name names, but although the service people there where very cordial they weren't very attentive. If it wasn't for my own persistence and concern for getting it back, I would have never known it was not being worked on. I just got an Ipad2 as a birthday present. As I struggled with getting familiar with it and became more and more frustrated, I got a call from a friend, who happens to be "MacMan" . Having tried and been disappointed by SEVERAL Apple consultants in the Los Angeles area over the past two years, I can honestly say that Jeremy knows his stuff. He quite simply knows just what he's doing. That's something of a rarity, as I have discovered. Having said that, I think a couple of pointers should be kept in mind when dealing with any professional, including Jeremy. First, you need to be able to communicate the problem as clearly as possible. If you can't do this, it makes the job harder, and I suppose for some people, paying by the hour while Jeremy fishes around trying to figure out the problem can be daunting. Of course, if you simply can't explain what's going on, or if you want to have a wide-range existential discussion about how to make your computer better suit your needs, then it's going to take a while. And you'll rightly have to pay for that time. Second, as someone who really knows his stuff, Jeremy might sometimes forget that what HE knows and what YOU know might be different. I have found that by speaking up and saying, "I don't get it. Why do I need to do it that way? Or can I do it this way instead?" and Jeremy will stop and see the question through my eyes. And explain my alternatives. Third, all of us have a different level of what we want to know. Some of us really WANT to know HOW the signal comes from the DSL, WHERE it goes into the router, WHAT settings are best for the Airport's frequencies, and WHY my computer needs an IP number to function, and WHETHER I should back up in the cloud or on my Time Capsule. Some of us don't care about ANY of that: we want to know how to use the computer-as-tool -- to get Pages working, how to write, how to send the draft to the editor, and how to answer e-mail, etc., and we don't care about how big electrons are. I think it's important to let Jeremy know where you are on that spectrum, so he can adjust how much explaining he needs to do. Jeremy is highly recommended. A good problem solver. read more
