I had inquired with MacMan about what it would take to transfer an old broken laptop hard drive files from the extracted disc itself that had been generously removed at the Apple Store when it was apparent there was no bringing it back to life. And that generosity of spirit would be mirrored when I reached out to MacMan. The computer wasn't backed giving Jeremy the opportunity to express dismay at such a novice mistake but that was not style and just moved on with solutions. Jeremy spent 22 min counseling me on my options. Bonus points for never getting impatient or talking down to me when I was a little thick. He outlined the steps for me to do it myself "if I'm handy," but also assured me he would be happy to provide his services to do so but that he tends to specialize in more demanding Mac matters. In the meantime, my reg computer guy friend got back from vacation and did the transfer If he were a lawyer billing out $200 an hour I legit would owe $50 at the least but he said it was "what he does" and accepted no compensation. No doubt, Jeremy's first class service and knowledge deserves an A+ but his lack of transparency and approach in gaining my business was a big fat D. Let me tell you my recent experience : I had just purchased a brand new Mac Book Pro and these days, I'm kind of an old lady when it comes to technology. I needed to clone my new Mac so that everything was exactly the same from the old Mac Book Pro and Apple offered to do it free of charge but I wanted it done same day so I checked Yelp for some local Apple service providers. The first quote I got was from Spring Street Mac. They quoted me $90 and the job would be completed same-day. I thought it was a bit high so I contacted MacMan to shop around. A good friend of mine usually helped me in the past but she was not around and honestly, I didn't want to bother my capable friends who were willing to help through the phone so I opted to pay a reasonable fee somewhere else instead since Apple said they'd do it at no cost. When I called MacMan, his receptionist said Jeremy would call me back with the quote for my job request and he texted me then called me immediately. Wonderful! I asked him over the phone what his fees were for this job and he refused to answer me after the 2nd time and said I didn't even have to come in and that he could help me over the phone when my computer arrives. I told him I was waiting for the delivery and it would arrive in a few days. Cool! He was so prompt and receptive and I could not have asked for a better customer service experience. Jeremy said that the procedure would not take much time and that I just needed a cable to connect both of the computers. I persisted to ask him how I could pay him but he would not respond. At this point, I thought to myself, "Wow, is this guy a saint or what?! Who stays in business this way??" I own businesses myself and in no way was I planning to just take his valuable time without payment. As days pass by, Jeremy diligently checks in with me and asks for tracking. Finally, the day my new Mac Book Pro arrives, he calls me while he's driving and we get the computer cloned right away. It didn't take that long since he said I had the fastest model that Apple had ever released as of Dec 2019. We spent half of the time on the phone just getting to know each other and he told me his backstory on how he started the business in the Bay Area which I thought was super cool since we had a similar history up there. I couldn't believe I was getting such a Mac gangster giving me his time and day while he was on his way to Joshua Tree getting my new work horse just the way I had hoped it to be. The entire experience was FLAWLESS and he was fun to chat with. ....Until I insisted to pay him and he billed me $200 for an hour of his time including all of the dialog we spent chatting about his personal life. First of all : All phone calls combined did not even add up to an hour and his instructions he gave me which were all performed on the phone took up maybe 20 minutes. I wasn't trying to low ball his consulting rates as I am aware of how valuable his time is but my intent was to get the job done at a better price than my first quote, hence the reason why I called him and I had told him and his secretary that as well. He frankly told me that he did not like to disclose rates for jobs over the phone (the only method of communication we had) because it turned some people off and decides to hit me with a $200 Venmo request justifying that he wasn't like all of his other competitors. Apparently, not! I expressed how I felt misled because he didn't provide me with a quote when I asked more than once. I don't understand how customers are obligated to pay a service when they aren't presented prices up front. Jeremy thanked me for the feedback and offered to donate his time which was kind of him but I was not about to take advantage of his offer. I ended up paying him $90 via Venmo because that was the quote that I originally received from Spring St. Mac because I felt it was fair. This is an example of a business I will never ever be returning to because I've completely lost trust but if you need that VIP exceptional service with a nice surprise price tag, Jeremy is your guy. Also, I asked him for an invoice for my accounting records after I Venmo'd him as he tried to sell me more services to clean up my computer and he never responded. No invoice. No purchase order. Jeremy/Macman is exceptional when it comes to Mac, Iphones, Technology ect. Within 5 mins of calling, I reached a reply from him. I came to him in a bit of a panic. My macbook was cluttered with duplicate files, blotched partition, out of sync calendars, OS from 5 years ago, malware, junk applications and random settings. This turned my laptop- which I consider the lifeblood of my business to decline to super slow speeds and have a little less then 500MB of free storage left!!! He cleaned up shop and educated me on my Mac and all my devices. We upgrades my OS and cleared up over 125GB of space. My calendars, photos, emails, documents are all in sync. I spilled coffee on my MacBook and ruined the keyboard and track pad. MacMan helped diagnose the damage and researched the likely repair plan. He then went as far as to call a local repair shop that would have the time to do the tear down of my laptop to fix it and he got me a quote, gave me the address and the amount I paid to repair it was less than half of what Apple wanted. REVISED: I initially had a problem with this business (see review below), but the owner heard me out and answered my question. It took a few texts to get there. His first response was "you must be trying to reach someone else.. Then - you were talking to my receptionist - she must have dropped the call.. Finally - it was my answering service - I've never had a complaint about them before (I've used an answering service before, and they capture the number unless it's blocked - mine isn't - if the call was "dropped," they would have called me back). In the end, he took the time to answer my question. I changed the review from 1 star to 5 stars because he came through - and although he never really took responsibility for the poor initial customer service I received, he did answer my question fully. Every business makes mistakes - none are perfect. The great businesses own their mistakes and make things right with the customer. MacMan did this. Jeremy just helped me transform my MacBook from an unbearably slow, unreliable piece of crap into a lightning fast technological wonder! I've known Jeremy since 2000. Back then he helped me fix up my G4 tower more times than I can count. Then OSX came along and he moved to LA and I thought I could live without him. Not true. I've gone through many Macs since then and each time I migrated my data, I migrated all my junk along with the good stuff. I got a new MacBook Pro about a year ago and I thought it would be fast and fabulous. It was not. And as time went on it got more and more sluggish. Then I upgraded to Mavericks and Adobe CC and I thought NOW it's going to be fast and fabulous. No. It became almost unusable. I'm in Oakland and Jeremy is in LA, so I didn't think he could help me and asked him for a referral. He said he could help me remotely. What?! Why didn't I figure this out years ago! And help me he did. He cleaned out my hard drive - about 50GB of crap (I still had defunct applications from 2001 hiding on there). After that clean up, my machine was already noticeably faster and less buggy. But then, over the phone, he helped me upgrade my memory and switch out my HD and now I'm living in a whole different world. I can't even believe how fast my MacBook is now. My applications open instantaneously and huge files save immediately. I can't believe I lived with a sluggish machine for so long. I used MacMan for my home Mac, which was not performing to its potential and needed networking at the house. I am positively ecstatic with the level of service and knowledge that Jeremy dispensed. My computer hard drive died recently, and even the mac store just gave me looks of consolation and shoulder shrugs. But Jeremy got in there and really worked at salvaging whatever he could. He listened carefully to what I would miss most if the hard drive had failed for good, and in the one brief window of opportunity when he was able to transfer some items, he went straight for those things I mentioned. I had a dusty old EMac that should have failed a long time ago, and when I called Jeremy for help, he gave me expert recommendations and set up my replacement IMac with great speed and efficiency. He has always been there for me with any little nagging problem, and while he deservedly has many clients, he always makes me feel like I'm his number one priority. And this is his greatest strength - the personal touch. He's not an anti-social know-it-all, chiding his clients for not knowing as much as he knows. Sure, he will point out things his clients can do to improve the functionality of their computers, but unlike other techs, Jeremy does it without an ounce of condescension.
