Today's group discussion topic for the Ethics in Marketing seminar: "Can a joint call itself a brewery if it don't brew nothin'?" Maybe they're knocking out the occasional keg to keep some loophole open, but sadly it appears this has turned into just another taproom serving other people's beer--and not even a particularly interesting lineup of them. I thought it was bad when they stopped serving the free peanuts out of a big barrel, but this is a thousand times worse. That's a real shame, because they used to make and serve some excellent brews and were noted for their cask-aged, hand-drawn ales (warm and flat ain't for me--but hey, respect). Add in some better than average pizza, and it was worth putting up with the semi-sketch location and the horror-show parking. Not anymore. When the beers are the same ones I can get at plenty of other bars and restaurants--or, like on my last visit, stuff I could just as easily grab off the supermarket shelf--what's the point? The pizza's still decent, and they even run special pies with unique toppings that are sometimes hit or miss but at least show they're making an effort on that front. But is that enough to make the food the star, not the supporting act to the beer, and make it a destination on its own? Not for me. I know they've had their ups and downs, and no doubt it's a small miracle they're even still hanging in. Stepping away from brewing was probably a tough call, maybe driven by some ugly financial realities, and I do root for them. But giving up what made them unique and transitioning into just another generic beer bar feels like turning their back on the whole point of the place--and it's just not as special anymore. read more

Wow, look at this brewery on my side of town! I truly love to see it and I can't wait to go back! Vibes 5/5: First off they have three area options. They have outdoor seating, indoor seating, and then this side room with more seating if the garage door inside/outside seating is too much for you. Apparently, they have events on certain nights as well? Food and Drinks: 4/5 They have a large menu of food. Marg: 4/5. Smaller than we thought given the price point but it was still tasty Bread and Cheese (thing) 4/5: We loved the spread that they had, super garlicky. For some reason, we thought that it would be warmer or melted. The bread was really nice too. Drinks: I think we all liked our drinks for the most part. Priced very well. You can get a flight too and pick which ones you want to try so that's what we did! Parking: Sucks hard. We were here on a thursday so i can't imagine how it is on the weekends. Its off a side street but its tough. It picked up a lot too by the time we headed out (7ish) so expect some texts that say "looking for parking." Otherwise, I'd totally come back here. You may come for the food, the service, or the ambiance. You probably came for the beer. All of the above are top notch. Now, you may not know about "cask beer" or "real ale". That's OK. This is the place to learn about it. That's what I did. I had no idea or experience with cask beer. Cask means the beer is conditioned in the cask, here called a firken. Naturally carbonated. Naturally delicious. Naturally no ill effects on me. I have been enjoying their Kings Taxes and other darker real ales here for 10 years and never experienced any problems the next day. No tight neck, no headache, no pain at all. Certainly never a hangover. In fact, after having MacLeod's Real Ale, I honestly feel better the next morning. My head is clear. Eyes wide open. It's a great elixir. Pairing with the food on the menu is easy as they have wonderful house made pizza, calzone, salads, wings, meatballs, meatball sliders, cheese, bread, fougasse with beer cheese, marinated olives, and a Sunday brunch. If you still have room for dessert, they have little jars of lemon posset, butterscotch budino, vanilla panna cotta with raspberry, chocolate panna cotta, and English trifle. In addition to the real ale cask conditioned beer there is a variety of draft and nitro offerings as well as cans to take home. There are some non-alcoholic beverages, but I'm not familiar with them. This is one of only two hand pumped real ale breweries in Los Angeles. Do yourself a favor and come and enjoy ! A gem of a place located on an unlikely street. Stop by there during a local errand, and ended up having excellent "bar food" that was healthy and delicious. The concise, excellent beer and wine menu gave me some great choices. The bartender and staff were all extremely friendly, welcoming, and ran the place really well I'd go back anytime. read more

Pizza was great - we got two vegetarian options including mushroom sage and mixed vegges and a Caesar salad which came with homemade dressing. Beer was excellent too - got a Hefeweizen and a cider that was not too sweet. It was refreshing! My only concern was how close cars can get to the location where people were sitting and standing without barriers to block further entrance. Good beer, good food, good games, definitely a vibe! There are dart boards everywhere for use and board games in their bookshelf. They also have corn hole and large jenga. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating so it's great for large groups. Could have more variety with Beers but I'm kind of a princess when it comes to beer. They have awesome IPA selection though! They have some outside rotations they offer like there was a Hard Kombucha Lemonade which was awesome! Their food was shockingly not overpriced and super affordable. The pizzas are so good to share and the quality -- they taste so good! My favorite was this sage pizza and the bbq pizza! You really can't go wrong with any of them though. The lemon salad was also fire. My favorite thing I ate there though was their Lemon panna cotta in the fridge. You grab it and take it to the cashier, it's amazing!! Pricer but worth it! Although I'd love for it to have a higher lemon topping portion. The only complaint I have is the limited parking. At night, the area this place in can feel a bit sketchy and scary to walk alone as a girl. They do have security at the brewery but anywhere outside is fair game. Highly recommend :D read more

A great place for a beer. An excellent place for a pizza. They have a long list of terrific house-made beer, and the pizza is super tasty--the ultimate combination! This place has just the right vibe you'd want from a brewery. The difference is that some breweries feel very industrial. But Macleod feels homey and very local. Case in point: parking can be difficult sometimes. The first time I was able to park in the front lot, but I was blocking somebody. I went around the bar and found the guy I'd blocked in, and we agreed to find each other later and switch the cars. All very casual and chill, which made me feel right at home. Throw in a patio with a "scenic" view of a dark side street and some light industrial businesses, and you get the deal. Two more visits later, it's one of my favorite beer places in L.A. read more

Kinda bummed. Went 5/22 and asked why most taps were third party brews. The answer is they're "becoming more of a beer bar." I guess that means they're not brewing their own anymore. Street parking was a little difficult and sketch (we went on Tuesday so weekend is probably a lot harder to find a spot), but I think that was the only bad part of our experience. We really liked the ample amount of outdoor seating, and how kind and helpful the staff were. When we weren't sure what we wanted, the bartender had us sample some beers and explained/showed the difference between cask and draft (we liked cask!). They're one of those places that give you a number after you order and you find a table. They were very quick bringing our food out to us and cleaning up as we went. The beer was good (can't remember what I had), but the pizza was the highlight of my life - we got the margherita pizza and it was incredible. Crust was perfectly crunchy and flavorful, and the sauce was rich and delicious. The bottom crust was super thin which was fine - though I would prefer a heftier base to make it easier to eat. Folding it in half helped. The fougasse with beer cheese was also good, but the cheese was a bit too thick and beer-y for me. We also ordered desserts after - they come in little jars so it's a lot of pudding/ganache/creme pot style desserts. I loved my chocolate black cherry one; it sent me straight to heaven. Highly recommend this place! We'll be back. It's worth the trek. read more

Fantastic brewery located in middle Van Nuys industrial area. Great place to chill and enjoy great craft beer. Plenty of seating options especially in front patio area. Family and pet friendly as well. For fun, bean bag toss and dart games are present. We came on weekend and it was busy, but it never felt overly crowded, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. They even serve food here, which is nice. Gourmet hot dogs and pizza were served on my previous visits. Parking is street parking only and can be a challenge at times. I had to circle back a few time to find a parking spot. Best option is to take Uber or just park few blocks away. They also have a great rotating tap menu. Deal with the Devil and Delano Daze are my favorite beers served so far. Both IPAs, delicious and not too hoppy. Coffee porter is also another beer I enjoyed. I actually enjoyed this more than Starbucks cold brew...lol! For non beer drinkers, they also serve wine, hard cider and hard komboucha. I'll definitely come back to try their other beers. Anyway great place, check it out read more

Love love love me a good brewery with a small variety of stouts. This spot is in Van Nuys and has seating indoors and outdoors. This is a sizable brewery with a few games and some food options available. After a certain hour, they sell COLD PIZZA which ended up being the most off-putting thing I may have ever spent money on... learn from my mistake. The desserts here are ridiculously good and I usually end up getting 2-4 because... they're that ridiculously good. Parking, though, is just the worst. Very limited parking on the street, and tandem parking in their lot seems like a nightmare... I frequently hear calls for people to move their cars. I don't even bother taking the risk and just end up parking a block or two away. read more

I often avoid brewing companies because I don't really care for beer, and in my experience there aren't often good food options, let alone vegan ones. So when a friend invited me for their birthday festivities I was hesitant to make the journey up the valley but what really sealed the deal was seeing they offered VEGAN PIZZA--and not just any vegan pizza but SOYRIZO vegan pizza. Yes, please. This location had plenty of outdoor and indoor seating, and the indoor seating is well ventilated because they keep their large garage-type doors open during business hours, so if you're still Covid-conscious and mindful it's great for that as well. They offer a few games such as large Jenga and corn hole. This location is great for both a friendly hang with buddies or a casual date! While I don't drink beer I can assure you there were plenty of options for beer drinkers as well as non-beer drinkers. They have sodas, root beer floats, free water, a cider, etc. They even have fun single-serve desserts in little mason jars--yum! My only complaint is that I don't live closer and can't go more often, ha! read more

I'm an LA girl through and through. I'd stepped off my flight home from Dublin the night before and by 12p we were trying MacLeod's. Ireland didn't rub off on me, I'd actually learned about this spot from an employee at our local grocery store who told me his fav IPA Deal with Devil is here. I love a good IPA so I knew I had to check them out. I loved this spot! On a perfectly beautiful 76 degree Saturday afternoon drinking a flight of their IPA's under palm trees is what life's all about. The relaxed open air casual vibe of this place can't be beat. This atmosphere and experience very quickly made me think, this may be my new fav place around town. The hot Hawaiian pizza was very yummy and paired perfectly with the beer. I ended up really loving the hazy IPA's Calvert Crush and Better View. As cool as visiting Ireland was, MacLeod's is far more my speed, bike shorts and a t-shirt, warm weather, sitting outdoors soaking in the vitamin D, enjoying a beer and a pizza is about as close to perfection as one will find around here. I'll definitely be returning again and again. No passport required for this really awesome brewery. A hidden gem in the valley, Macleod consistently serves up good vibes and great beers. I've been going to Macleods just over a year and a half - every time I visit friends in the area. We head over for whatever game they have on, popcorn and pizza. (So happy the pizzas are back!). My personal faves are Deal with the Devil, any of the hazies - Calvert Crush or Haka on Hazeltine, and Saticoy Sour or Cran Nuys. Maybe you're thinking, "You're just listing everything (eye-roll)," but I can assure you Macleods has a ton more for you. Dog and kid-friendly, this is just the chillest vibe you could hope for. I liked this brewery. Very chill environment. Was in the valley and met up with my friend for some beers. This is a good spot for groups or a casual date. They have a large front patio/outdoor seating area. They also have a decent sized inside seating area. Didn't see any TV's. Didn't get a chance to try the pizza this time around. But I did get a nice vanilla soft serve. Unlike McDonald's, the machine is working here. I liked my beer flight of the Lemon-lime Ice Lager (4.1%), Leaving El Paso Cream Ale (5.4%), Ambrosia Gose Sour (6.5%), and Murrieta Milkshake IPA (6.2%). My favs of the bunch were the Ambrosia Gose and Murrieta Milkshake. They had a nice fruity taste which I'm partial to. The flight samples were bigger than most other breweries too. Service was good. Friendly staff in masks. Parking sucks as others have noted. You might get lucky getting a spot on the street but you'll probably end up walking a block or two. If you're around or passing thru the valley, give McLeod Ale Brewing a look. It's definitely worth checking out. read more

Lived in Van Nuys my whole life; finally tried Macleod for the first time and 10/10 would go again. Reminds me of Angel City Brewery when I briefly lived in DTLA. Beers? Good. Pizza? Delicious. They weren't stingy with the pepperonis. Games? You betcha. Parking? There's a handful out front, if you're lucky. But parking down the street and doing a little cardio never hurt anybody. My first visit here I went for a Yelp perk deal where I could pick up a 4 pack of local beers there; this was a few months back before breweries and stuff weren't really opening. I tried the beers, thought they were ok but I still got a little $2 off token from MacLeod that kept calling me back. A few weeks ago, my buddy was sans wife and kid I suggested meeting up at MacLeod, since they had fully reopened. I made a reservation for a Tuesday night through their website and waited for confirmation. I didn't get it and followed up with a text the day of, they hadn't gotten one but said Tuesdays are usually quiet so a reservation was probably not necessary. A reservation wasn't necessary but it seemed pretty busy. Definitely not dead and I can see why. They have honest to God cask beers with an engine, 'real ale' as it's often called. Ok, so having a firkin is one thing but since beers aren't super refrigerated and often unfiltered it can alter the taste of the beer and I've definitely had a few 'craft beers' fall flat both literally and figuratively when they're pulled through an engine. 2 of the 3 beers I had were from casks, both made in-house both delicious. The pizza they have...I would bring non beer drinkers here for the pizza. The two of us ended up polishing 3 off. The margherita was just...good. I know that's simplistic for me to say but often times I've found marg pizzas to be just glorified cheese pizzas with a couple shavings of basil thrown in. The one here is not like that at all, generous dispersion of basil, with a bright sauce. The jalapeno popper is billed as 'your new favorite' pizza, it just might be it was just spicy and salty enough. I thought we'd be done but our last one, the Hot Italian. You get a lot of things that say they're a 'Hot Italian' but with no heat. The heat from the salami and sausage wasn't overpowering but it let you know it was there. I really liked this visit so much that I'm going to make the trek out again later this week to meet up with the same friend. Hopefully, the same magic will happen but I'm pretty certain it will. read more

The lack of it and the fact that the surrounding neighborhood is not very walking-friendly. I wouldn't want to walk in that neighborhood alone at night.
