My love for craft beer brought me here years ago and I still come back often. At one point, they lost their head brewer and we lost a lot of their unique beers but had an array of guest taps. I'm glad that's changed! They're brewing again AND still have guest taps! Deal with the Devil is my favorite IPA here. Ordering is easy, just go to the bar, place your order (check the paper menus by the register first), open a tab and they'll give you a number to put on your table. Wait for your food to arrive and enjoy! Don't forget the beers! For food, our go to is always their pizza (check out the cheese pull in my photos) and fougasse. Our kids love the pizza and plain curly fries. Chicken wings and their Caesar salad is good too! We miss the panna cotta they used to have. They were delicious! The cookies are a good substitute for that sweet craving after a meal. Parking can be difficult and stressful at times to find a spot. You'll have to drive around to find one. They have parking in front of the brewery, but it's VERY limited. We Uber with friends and family sometimes to avoid the stress of finding parking. Staff is always kind and always there to make suggestions on the beers they serve. Don't forget to take a photo in their photo booth before you leave! Lovely neighborhood brewery! The pizza is delicious and I love their Van Ice beer as well as the rotating selection they have. The cheese fries were pretty small but tasted great. They allow dogs (we sat outside with ours). They are also open to all ages. They have events on different days of the week so definitely follow them on instagram if you live in the area. read more

Great vibes, good beer, really cool atmosphere. Food was not good, I really wanted to like it but could not finish anything. For 3 of us we got a chicken Cesar salad, pepperoni pizza, garlic bread, and wings. Salad had anchovies which was a nice touch but the chicken was not included :( the pizza tasted like chucky cheese (very rubbery), and the bread tasted bland and generic and the wings tasted a little undercooked, just not crispy enough for me personally but for some people that might be their thing! I came to see a band play of a mutual friend. I wasn't aware they had a whole venue to the side for bands to play. That aspect alone is pretty cool. The beer was decent. We tried their Birria pizza which was alright. The flavor was good but didn't have much meat on it and felt like I was chewing a ball of cheese with each bite. Met up with some friends at Macleod's on Friday night and it was the perfect spot to sit down, have a couple drinks, and unwind from the week! Macleod has a great selection of local brews (even if you aren't a beer drinker like myself, they have a great selection of lighter and and tasty beers) and which pair perfectly with their menu of pizzas and appetizers! They also have plenty of seating where you can just sit to chat or grab a game board to play with friends! We popped in for St Paddy's Day but later found out that they had their little celebration over the weekend. So I assume it was quite busy and happening during the weekend. But anyways, we stopped in just after when they opened. Just to get a table and order food before the rush. It wasn't that busy which was have so ordering was simple. Line wasn't long which is a plus as it can be a wait if there's loads of people. Of course, they had the green beer which makes it more exciting for the whole experience. Also ordered some pizzas to go with it. They were out of one of the pizzas we wanted, well out of a certain ingredient that was half of the pizza. But we did go with the spicy Italian and buffalo chicken as well as the chicken Cesar. Food wasn't too much of a wait as before, it did take a long time with so many orders coming in. Pizza, good as always. Good for sharing or a personal if you're hungry. Also, the dessert was great. The panna cotta and chocolate budino were excellent. Macleod's it's been a minute! I'm not so much within walking distance of you these days, but truly glad to return to the Mac. Macleod Ale Brewing is the hidden hub in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California. Opening it's huge roll up doors in 2014. It's grown, flourished and adapted with the bumps in the road. The decor and ambiance is a cross blend of English, Scottish and San Fernando Valley. It's a very intimate yet spacious modern warehouse layout filled with nothing but (unofficial official) Van Nuys Village charm. Flights are still a great way to try it all, but even there with the variety of craft, custom and classic style brews you have a large variety... Not to mention cider, seltzer, wine and non adult beverages. For food its custom in-house pizzas, salad, snacks and appetizers. I'm really bummed they took the vegan pizzas off the menu - was incredible on so many levels, plus they seem to have limited most of the veggie options. Vegan Jackfruit as well as Vegan Chorizo pizzas forever in my heart. Meeting up with the same group of friends I first popped into this LA Valley gem with made for a great experience. The Kester Kooler - Kool Aid hard seltzer is official a new favorite, but you can't go wrong with anything here depending on your preferences and/or pallet. The staff is still wonderful in every way. Loads of seating inside on both sides as well as outside on the patio - everything open air. Great music. Gender Neutral restrooms. Pet friendly. Kid friendly. Open to all. Parking will be a little bit of a struggle but it's only two blocks or so from the Metro Station for Van Nuys Blvd, easy rideshare drop off (or pick up when time to leave) and you can get lucky more so on side streets than Calvert itself. A far cry from its former glory days - we used to love coming here, as the brewing was quite excellent previously. Unfortunately the last few years have been quite difficult for this brewery, which has had to significantly downsize its in-house brewing operations and kitchen operations. Parking has improved with better signage and agreements with the neighboring auto shops, and is still a solid place to enjoy a quick beer, but would love to see a return to more in-house brewing. read more

Checked out this spot with my fam. The pictures are misleading. The parking is a nightmare and in a not so good area of the valley. The food was okay. Pizza was mediocre and the wings Too. Disappointed they didn't have many ciders to offer. Literally ONE. Also, the seating outside on the benches doesn't seem sturdy, needs an update. Lastly, the bathrooms are so poorly lit I thought the lights were broken and it Smelled horribly, like urine. One of the best kept secrets in Los Angeles. Located in the middle of tow truck yards and junk yards is the coolest brewery in the Van Nuys area. You have to check it out. All you smell is jasmine and garlic. It's amazing. The service is fast and easy going. It takes only a few minutes to get your beer and food. Everyone else goes for the beer and pizza. A Masterclass in How Not to Run a Bar I've been to Macleod's a few times now, and every visit feels like I've accidentally walked into a live demonstration of how little effort a bar can put into service before customers start wondering if they're part of a hidden camera show. The atmosphere is somewhere between "abandoned community center" and "dive bar that's given up on the idea of wiping tables." Most of the tables come pre-decorated with a charming assortment of old dishes, empty glasses, and a sticky film that makes you question whether it's spilled beer or some sort of permanent coating they've committed to. Getting a drink is its own adventure. The bartenders appear to practice a very specialized form of hospitality where they stand around, avoid eye contact, and hope that if they stay still long enough the customers will simply disappear. It's impressive. I stood there long enough to reconsider several life choices before anyone acknowledged that I might be there for something outrageous........ like ordering a beer. But the real highlight of the experience is Ben, who seems to be running the show. Ben has the confidence of someone who clearly believes he's the smartest guy in the room. Unfortunately, nothing happening in the bar seems to support that theory. He carries himself like he's delivering a masterclass in how things should be done, while the place around him looks like a case study in how things are very much not being done. The vibe you get is that Ben thinks he's the authority on everything--very confident, very sure of himself, very dismissive of customers. Meanwhile the tables are sticky, dishes are piling up everywhere, and people are standing around waiting for a bartender who seems to have wandered off into another dimension. It creates this strange contrast where the attitude says "expert in charge," but the reality looks more like "nobody steering the ship." You also can't help but feel like most people walking in probably notice the same thing. The attitude, the dismissiveness, the whole "I know better than everyone here" energy. What really says it all is this: I'm not even a Yelp person. I didn't have an account, never bothered writing reviews, and honestly never planned to. But the experience here was so impressively bad that Macleod's managed to accomplish the incredible feat of making me go home, create a Yelp account, and write exactly one review--this one. I kept going back thinking maybe I had just caught them on a bad day. At this point it seems the bad day might actually be the business model. If you're looking for sticky tables, slow service, and the unique experience of feeling like you're inconveniencing the staff by ordering a drink, Macleod's absolutely delivers. If you're looking for a bar where people wipe tables and serve customers, there are plenty of other places nearby doing that radical new concept. On the bright side, the visit was memorable. Macleod's is awesome. I do want to give this place the shine it deserves. The pizza is always on point. The patio atmosphere is always great. Good place to meet up if you have a large party. I've noticed they have added quite a few events nowadays which is bringing in more of a crowd. Dog & Kid friendly! Hit or miss on parking. Can be tricky anytime of the afternoon/evening. Only thing I wish was better was staffing an additional bartender at times. Seems every time I go there is a line almost to the door with a single bartender pouring drinks and opening closing tabs. I started ordering two beers at the same time so I don't have to jump back in that slow line after each drink. Would be cool if they put QR codes on tables and you could just order from table. read more

There's a lot to like about Macleod. However, we had dinner there tonight (this was in August, so summer time) and a horde of flies were non-stop attacking our food. We were sitting inside and the garage doors were open. Legitimately it was about 15 flies throughout the whole dinner waiting for us to stop swatting so they could land on our food. Though we liked our beers and the food we got, the uncontrolled flies ruined the experience. Would be happy to go back if they figure this out. Macleod is a fun little warehouse spot in the middle of a not-so-savoury part of Van Nuys. There's a nice selection of beer with cutesy, Valley-related names (Van Ice, Saticoy Sour, Cran Nuys, Haka On Hazeltine). They have their own kitchen and food menu (pizza, apps, salads) as opposed to the food truck roulette usually featured at breweries. The only issues are the location and parking. I've wanted to come back here several times (it's just blocks from my office, so perfect for an after-work drink), but I just don't want to deal with fighting for one of only a couple spots in their front lot - which other Yelpers have mentioned sometimes get parked in - or risk parking my car on the street in this part of town. It's a shame that such a great place is situated so inconveniently. read more

Been coming here for over a year now, my friends put on events here a couple times a month. Nice spot, great pizza, and mellow atmosphere. Bummed they no longer make their own beer (loved when they did the milkshake ipa), but their beer selection is solid. The only real drag is parking but thats not their fault. The chop shops take up all the street parking and there just isnt enough parking spots on property. Having to walk blocks to get there is a pain and not exactly safe for lone women. MacLeod's was our last minute plans to hit up a local SFV sports bar to watch game 7 of the World Series. Texted them morning of and responded quickly with confirmation for a table for 3. Unfortunately we got there past the start of the game so our table was gone, but they still reserved a spot for us 3 on a high top in front of the big screen. Owner (older gentleman) was so nice and came out to open up 3 parking spots and we were one of the lucky cars (after circling the side streets twice) to park almost in front of the bar! Nice, friendly staff/servers. Food was overpriced for size/amount (e.g., $8 for a small tray of curly fries!!) and variety was ok, but you go for the atmosphere and not so much the food? However, food was pretty good for bar food. We ordered pepperoni pizza (thick crust) (4/5), 2x curly fries (3/5), baked wings (3.8/5), Greek salad (4/5) and a soda ($80!!)! Really good pizza, but you can't seem to order online or call an order in, the phone message says to order at the location and the food will be ready in 10 minutes, that is definitely not the case. Macleod Ale Brewing is an excellent spot to enjoy an IPA and chow down on some great finger foods. I was able to have these spicy, meatball sliders and try a couple of their IPAs. The spicy sliders definitely had a kick to them, which was welcomed. My friends were able to try the pizzas and said they tasted great as well. The service is quick and friendly. The beer menu was decent but they only had one beer of their own on tap. The overall atmosphere was nice with a patio for pets . Staff wasn't super friendly or helpful. Today's group discussion topic for the Ethics in Marketing seminar: "Can a joint call itself a brewery if it don't brew nothin'?" Maybe they're knocking out the occasional keg to keep some loophole open, but sadly it appears this has turned into just another taproom serving other people's beer--and not even a particularly interesting lineup of them. I thought it was bad when they stopped serving the free peanuts out of a big barrel, but this is a thousand times worse. That's a real shame, because they used to make and serve some excellent brews and were noted for their cask-aged, hand-drawn ales (warm and flat ain't for me--but hey, respect). Add in some better than average pizza, and it was worth putting up with the semi-sketch location and the horror-show parking. Not anymore. When the beers are the same ones I can get at plenty of other bars and restaurants--or, like on my last visit, stuff I could just as easily grab off the supermarket shelf--what's the point? The pizza's still decent, and they even run special pies with unique toppings that are sometimes hit or miss but at least show they're making an effort on that front. But is that enough to make the food the star, not the supporting act to the beer, and make it a destination on its own? Not for me. I know they've had their ups and downs, and no doubt it's a small miracle they're even still hanging in. Stepping away from brewing was probably a tough call, maybe driven by some ugly financial realities, and I do root for them. But giving up what made them unique and transitioning into just another generic beer bar feels like turning their back on the whole point of the place--and it's just not as special anymore. read more
