Whenever we come to Michigan to visit our daughter, we typically come to the Mack Avenue Grill. There is a wait, which sucks, but the food is excellent and the service is stellar. We came on Father's Day for breakfast and had to wait about 30 minutes for a table. It didn't take that long to get our meals and the food was excellent. I really love this place. Good food and service. I've visited a number of times, always for breakfast. Visited today and had the Detroit omelet with bacon. The omelet and hash browns were delicious. My only issue with this restaurant is the toast, which I believe is grilled and is always startlingly dry. The bread must have had moisture at some point but the grilling (or whatever treatment their toast is given) removes any remembrance of it. Dry, dry, dry! I always forget until I bite into it and it feels like slightly buttery toast dust in my mouth. Like I said, otherwise not a bad place to visit for breakfast. read more

This was my first visit and I tried several things,the lobster mac and cheese,the wings,the spinach artichoke dip and a regular salad. It was three of us and our bill was $85. First of all, the lobster mac and cheese was $19 for BOX mac and cheese with shreds of lobster which probably was imitation crab meat. It was bland,watery and not cheesy at all as the menu suggest. It also came to the table cold. The spinach artichoke dip was bland. The salad had big chunks of the romain heart stalk and was wet with three measly cucumbers. It looked as if it had been frozen and they just tossed it on the plate. The wings came crumbled with blue cheese. They were undercooked and tasted like an old refrigerator. My sister and mom order the turkey and dressing dinner. The dressing was made with bread and the turkey was strange. The asparagus was over cooked. I had lunch here with my coworkers on a Friday afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised. The menu at lunch time features both lunch and breakfast items and I noticed a lot of folks eating yummy looking breakfast items. They have a huge selection of salads and that's what I chose to have. I had the alpine salad which was mixed greens, kalamata olives, Swiss cheese, grilled chicken and grapes. It was very good, only issue is their olives have pits which they warn you about but still they could splurge for the pitted olives. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meals. Our service was a bit slow and in general the waitstaff and hostess seemed overwhelmed with life. I'm told it's always busy so you'd think they'd be accustomed to that by now. I just went there and ordered the veggie panini. I did not want the side of soup or coleslaw so was offered carrots or sliced tomatoes. I asked for tomatoes. When the food arrived, the sandwich had (at most) 2 teaspoons of veggie filling and was accompanied by a side of carrots. Kiss my grits! As diner food goes Mack Ave Diner is pretty great. The staff is super friendly. If you go more than twice they will remember you and typically chat you up. The chili!!!! Oh how I love the chili! They make the chili fresh in house. Tomatoey, greasy goodness. No matter what I order I always get a chili to go. Ask for a peanut butter on white for the perfect complement. If a turkey club is more your style they are perfect here. Crisp bacon, real turkey, lovely lettuce, terrific tomatoes, and enough mayo to hold it all together. This joint is always full on the weekends and near full at lunch time. Also, check the specials for a good $4.99 lunch deal. Racist... Checked in and waited. They seated the caucasians before us. The table they attempted to seat us at was the same size as the table they sat the Caucasian's at. When I questioned why we weren't seated before them when we had been waiting a while before they came he lied and said oh I was waiting for a bigger table. We were only a part of two. I said but the tables are the same size he said oh. Well they were here before you. I said no they weren't. He said oh well I don't know who made the list. I said you took my name down. He said oh. I don't recall. The man next to him takes the list and flips through the pages and shows me how the caucasians were marked off that were on the list after us and we were deliberately skipped over. Numerous options to choose from on the menu. Could satisfy anyone's tastebuds. Making a final decision on what to eat was actually a bit challenging because of the vast array of options. We got biscuits and gravy, warm turkey sandwich, the yatch club, and Mexican salad. They're known for their salads and it looked generous but nothing I'd order. The staff was lacking interest and we had to ask for a box and the check. While I like that we weren't constantly asked how our food was, getting up to ask for the bill was a little too hands off. The biscuits were stale and cold, and the gravy didn't look or taste like there was sausage in it. The warm turkey sandwich looked like something from Denny's but whiter. It came with a soup, lemon chicken, which was nice. The yatch club advertised a bunch of yummy items including bacon, cheddar, avocado, etc. squishing it all in a panini did nothing for it. Plus it made me look for the avocado. The slaw it came with was great. Not sweet and slightly vinegary. The salad was ample and had tortillas on the side. All in all a bland lunch. Ive been here twice and both times gotten the omelette special. Today i got the Baja breeze omelette, which was bacon, ham, Swiss with guacamole on top. Was not a huge fan of the guac on eggs but thought was worth a shot lol. Omelette was fluffy and good with plenty of cheese. Came with hash Browns and toast. Hash Browns were pretty overdone in spots. Rye toast was rye toast. Was decent for the $8.99 price. Service has been good each visit. We stopped in here in a Sunday afternoon. The place was busy but we were seated within minutes. All of the staff were very accommodating and helpful. The orange juice was fresh squeezed and delicious! The menu was large but had many options that sounded great! We ended up ordering lunch and were all pleasantly surprised by how tasty everything was! The chicken lemon rice and the chicken noodle soup were perfect. I had the chicken Caesar wrap with sweet potato fries and it was absolutely amazing! The fries weren't soggy or greasy and floppy like sweet potato fries tend to be. They were crisp and delicious. Yuck! Frozen Fish sticks on Good Friday? Uh at this place yes. We were so looking forward to great fish and chips on Good Friday, and after a quick search, I saw that Mack ave grill has it on the menu. We always have great breakfasts there, so why not. We asked the waitress how they were and she said "you get 3 large pieces of battered cod and fries". Great, right? NOT. What came out were 2 plates with 3 little triangles of frozen nasty fish sticks you get from the supermarket. What? Tasteless, not even real fish! It was awful and cost $25!!!! I also like avocado slices on the side. It's served with your choice of hash browns, carrot sticks or fresh fruit (with a small up charge). It's delicious and a generous enough portion that I eat one half for breakfast and take the other half home for lunch. I'm a weekly regular here. The food is above average but the service is without equal. Try the salmon Benedict served with fresh greens. If you don't see it on the specials screen, ask and the cook will accommodate, if possible. I posted the photos today. It's always good but today was, as they say in Italian, perfetto! We have been coming here for years. The menu is very extensive and a lot of good choices to satisfy for which meal you come here for. The salads are really good and fresh and the bistro salad is one of our favorites. I have also had some of the breakfast choices. My favorite is the omelette choices. Plenty of ingredients to choose from. Do not forget to check the specials on the screen near the kitchen counter. It is a very popular spot in the Points so sometimes you may have to wait. Its is well worth it The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable of how the food is prepared. They also have outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Best Breakfast! We eat breakfast here at least once per week. Their egg-white omelette is nothing short of AMAZING. Seriously. They whip the eggs until they are so fluffy and stuff it full of whatever you please. I have tried to replicate it at home, spending 20 minutes whipping egg whites by hand, and I just can't quite get it to be the same. We have been going here for years, even prior to the current management. Unfortunately today was our last visit to this restaurant. We had a large group of 7 and there was actually another family of 7 waiting. We know it's busy, have no problem waiting, but watching 2 opportunities to at least seat the family in front of us by putting two tables together I just had to ask. Are you not able to put tables together because of a health code or a specific reason??? Nope. Poor management just didn't want to. When I came here I had a really great experience the food was very good the quality was excellent but then a few days later I got something from my credit card company wondering or letting me know that I had given a very generous tip on my waitress at the Grill... well I left my tip in cash and I paid my bill with my credit card so somebody took it upon themselves to actually give them self a tip with my credit card even though I left a generous tip in cash at table!!! To say the least I'm disappointed and angry because I really enjoyed the food there I'm considering going back and talking to the manager about it!! what happened? the diner that was go-to place on the weekends has turned for the worst. We went there a couple weeks ago and the atmosphere was much different when you walked in. I noticed right away there were no more busboys. So, as you can imagine, this slows everything down. The waitresses didn't seem as happy as they once were. Oh- the best part of the visit - i ordered oatmeal. I received said oatmeal to find a HUGE PIECE OF PLASTIC, like the rim of the oatmeal canister melted and hardened.
