Went here Saturday. I ordered the Macho Nachos with fajita beef to-go. Was a little over $11. The chips were delicious. The beef fajita was cooked perfectly. I was disappointed with the amount of queso they used on these massive nachos though. I honestly hadn't even remembered it was supposed to have queso until I got to the bottom and saw a little dribble of it. The service there seems really nice. The front counter girl was super sweet. Good customer service from her as far as I could tell. Both from my interaction and interaction I saw her have with other customers. Overall, I would recommend this place. I will be back. Maybe try the breakfast tacos next time I go. read more

I came here for breakfast the other day for the first time. I had been going to the gym behind it for months and never even noticed it before since I come in from the other direction. the place gets fairly busy for breakfast but they are really quick. It's clean in there, salsas were good and the food was cheap. The breakfast tacos were so big I actually only ordered one and ended up getting an extra tortilla to split it into two tacos. A potato egg and cheese taco with an extra tortilla was under $3. None of their beans were vegetarian so I probably won't go back during lunch although I did notice they had a mushroom taco. Counter service was very friendly and it seemed like there was a lot of regulars in there. I did take a star off because there was a random piece of meat in my potato and egg taco, kinda gross. read more

Beef fajita tacos are good but be prepared to sacrifice your first born child to pay for it. This place secretly upcharges you for everything and had the audacity to serve me mediocre food. Barbacoa was so oily I had to drain it like a water hose before it was edible. The potatoes, beans, and eggs are dry, unseasoned and downright disgusting. My grandma would pop out the grave before I ever willingly give this place my money again. Don't get me wrong, the service was great and the owners were kind but 100% I was conned out of money. $50 for 3 plates and a drink. Absurd. read more

You will definitely get your money's worth eating tacos here. Very friendly waitstaff, and extremely clean dining room. Plenty of good coffee to go around! Love their salsa. Been here at least 100 times and the food has been consistent every time! Much kudos to this place. Oh and their carne guisada taco is probably one of the best in town. They use a high quality meat and allow it time to tenderize and simmer, giving the beef a very well-rounded flavor. The stew meat just falls apart. Yummm....Nice red-brown gravy enhances the flavor. Oh so perfect taco! Must try with cheese and sour cream. Also, we get the chicken fajita taco with bell peppers and onions. Seriously, you wont find a better place in South Austin. Food is decent but the lady that runs the front end is quick to be sassy and rude. Twice in the past year I have tried to inquire about access to a legible menu and each time I am met with an unfriendly attitude. The first time I tried to discuss this was on the phone. This last time I was in the store asking for a paper menu I could take with me since there is not an online menu that is legible. Once again she said, "we don't have any menus". I replied explaining that she is losing business and her temper flared as she claimed, "NO we are not". I moved out here a year ago and time and time again I have chosen to do business with the other two taco places within walking distance of Macho Taco because I can review their menu before I order via phone. We are in a pandemic. I am not coming inside the store to read the menu on the wall, order and wait. Neither will the AirBnB guests we have on the property non-stop!!!!! Macho Taco lady needs a lesson in being a part of the solution instead of the problem - and, at least try to engage in a friendly conversation with a paying customer that has a reason for asking for a copy of the dang menu. Best pancakes in Austin! My favorite is the Americana plate "a la mexicana". A bit much to eat, but you can ask to leave potatoes off. Definitely a good value. Fresh and not so greasy as many Telmex restaurants. read more

Macho Taco Man! I've got to be, a macho man Macho Tacho man I've got to be a macho! Ow.... This review needs not be long, just to the point. Macho Taco is that little hole in the wall Mexican food joint that you've been dreaming about. And it is just down the street from me. Gigantic breakfast tacos are only 1.55. Breakfast platters are 4.95. Most dinner plates are 6.50. The tortillas are awesome, and that's from a very picky tortilla eater. The red and green sauce are totally awesome. Seriously, this HUGE plate of food is 4.99??? OH MMMMM G! I'm in love with Machos. So good. I had the Huevos Rancheros the first time and it was perfect and really fresh. The next time I had two breakfast tacos which came with a bowl of amazing beans plus potatoes! I had to take a box home. It was still great later. Both the fresh green and red sauces are amazing. Where else can you get a lo-carb Monster with your breakfast I ask? But lets be honest, the best part is the gossip magazines on the table next to the condiments. The young lady who worked the front counter was very polite. The decor in the actual restaurant is outdated, but there is plenty of seating and the atmosphere was quiet when we came (there was no one in the venue). Prices are cheap and the food is above mediocre. I had the chicken enchiladas with rice and charro beans. The enchiladas were splendid! Lots of cheese and seasonings were on point. The rice was a little dry and a little under seasoned (compared to the rice I make at home all the time). The beans were under par, BUT my girlfriend thought they were delicious. Again, similar to my rice I like my beans to have lots of flavor and explode in my mouth :D I'd be down to give it another go because the prices are excellent for the amount and quality of food as well as the polite demeanor from the staff. read more

I was leaving church and did not really want fast food. I figured I would stop and get Mexican food and popped into this place. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The hot sauce is quite different than I have seen elsewhere. They have this orange sauce which is spicy but not too hot. They also have a green avocado sauce which is very good. I ordered chicken nachos and for under $5, it took 2 of us to finish them. I have even stopped in for breakfast and it is also very good. I wish this place was open later in the evening, as I tried stopping for dinner one night and realized they close at 3pm. If you are looking for Mexican food which is off the beaten path. Why do I love Macho Taco? Let me count the ways: 1. Excellent service. Everyone is super friendly. The chips and salsa arrive as soon as you sit down. Your food arrives hot as soon as it's finished cooking. 2. Delicious food. Everything we've tried here has been great - breakfast tacos, tacos, quesadillas, salsa. The portions are also pretty big. 3. Locally owned and family run. It's obvious Macho Taco is run by a nice family. All of the family members are very friendly...like so much more friendly than anywhere else. 4. There is always parking. 5. It's not expensive. At all. That combined with the huge portions is a win win. I hope one day they'll be open for dinner too. There it lots of competition for mexican food in this area, but Macho Taco is definitely up there. read more

As I said before, I'm a bit of a Tex-Mex food snob. Growing up with a grandmother who made tortillas by hand, I know what authenticity looks and tastes like. With that said, I didn't have high hopes for this place just because I never do --it leads me into a whirlpool of disappointment every time if I expect the best. So I expected mediocre. What I got was a pleasant surprise from this mom-and-pop place in a strip mall just south of Slaughter. The service was first-rate, and very clearly family-run. The menu was extensive, from enchiladas to fajitas and puffy tacos (insert joke here)... I ordered three tacos --carnitas, carne guisada and "al pastor" (which costs extra.) The carne guisada was pretty dry and flavorless. The carnitas stepped up the flavor and moisture a little bit, making it a little bit of a better selection. But the taco al pastor was AMAZING... we're talking flavor explosion here. The only thing missing might have been a bit of fresh cilantro, maybe some lime. I usually use rice and beans as my barometer of authenticity. The beans were spot on -- made with love, not with a factory. The rice was "weak" -- that's the only way I can describe it. It tasted *exactly* the way it should taste, but as though the seasonings had been "watered down" somehow. Intensify the flavor and they would have been a winner for sure. Finally, the price was really reasonable (three tacos + rice + beans = around $7). Bien hecho! read more

Great place for AUTHENTIC breakfast tacos. While torchys is great, and tacodeli is great, sometimes you want the real thing. This place feels like a Mexican taqueria should. No silly taco names, and no hipsters, just hardworking family folks trying to deliver breakfast to the early risers in the morning. Love this place! So glad to have it right down the street from our house. They have the best breakfast tacos. Nom. I've never ordered anything other than the breakfast tacos because they're why I keep coming back here. They're extremely loaded so you might even be able to just get one and split into two. I usually get two and don't eat until late into the evening again. Honestly though, who doesn't want a breakfast taco at all ours of the day? I've always gotten exceptional service here. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table. Everything seems to come out at lightning speed and everyone who's there is always extremely friendly! Great small business for the area. The place is always super clean and they're pretty quick to bus the tables too. My go to is bacon, egg, potato, and cheese. I would recommend that with some of their green salsa. It's to die for! I've been using Yelp since September 2010... Trying to hold out on reviews, but I got to put in a few good words for Macho Taco! Their breakfast tacos are up there w some of the best from South Texas and anywhere in Austin... I still don't see what all the fuss is about Taco Deli... I go with potato, egg, cheese with refried bean on the inside of the tortilla and it never has let me down in 5 yrs of going here. Also, lunches are good and very reasonably priced. Carne Guisada plate is good, burritos are as well. I'll mention the breakfast tacos again, you gotta give them a try. My girlfriend from Georgia didn't know squat about breakfast tacos 6 months ago, but she knows now Maco Taco has the best! read more

Their breakfast tacos are huge and great. They are a bit dry, but that's how I like them. My advice? Don't order two if you usually eat two. One breakfast taco is as large as two at most other places. Delicious and the price is right! No, the price is better than right. Their breakfast tacos are currently only $1.55 each!! We eat here a couple of times per month - usually get food to go. Favorites include cheese enchiladas with chili con Carnes (yummy hunks of beef and gravy) and my husband loves their barbacoa and beef fajita tacos. Great queso and guacamole too. My husband and I usually leave restaurants and give our 1-10 rating when we get in the store. We both agreed on a scale of 1-10 this place would be a 6. - the set up is deceiving. From the outside it looks like a normal sit down restaurant. However, when you walk inside it's more like a fast food order setup. - due to the setup and going here on a Sunday, we felt pressure to know what we wanted and order quickly(although it was our first visit!) - they still have servers who come out to deliver your food. A dine in with server restaurant would seem like the "servers" delivering your food could make better tips. We most likely will not be returning. read more

I took my family here when they were visiting from Houston. We were all blown away by how good everything is. We shared an assortment of tacos. I had the Machito's plate with barbacoa. We also ordered one pancake for our toddler and didn't realize it's the size of a plate! It's was also really good which I wasn't expecting. The taco sauces are out of this world too. I have only been there for one thing; breakfast tacos. Ohhh yum. One breakfast taco is the size of two anywhere else. They seriously pile it on. For $2, I can get a breakfast taco loaded up with eggs, potatoes, refried beans, and crispy bacon. FOR TWO DOLLARS. And I'm full til the afternoon. And they keep full bottles of homemade salsas and Cholula, which makes me extremely happy. The place is always clean, and the staff is always super friendly. Love it. read more
