Machete half birria half cochinita pibil

Walked in to a quiet little diner, had to find parking in the street which was a bit hard. Good music playing, and clean establishment. When we ordered the lady seemed annoyed at our party, didn't seem like she wanted to answer our questions as it was our first time there. However, she had a different attitude by the end of the night. The food was amazing, we tried a variety of machetes with different fillings. Will definitely be coming back

I believe I ordered the LARGE quesadilla / sword?

Big quesadillas is an understatement! These things look like Cloud's sword in FF7! Ingredients are authentic Mexican and top quality - especially the cheese which often ruins cheap taqueria quesadillas. Meats were all prepared well. The place is clean and while kept for a humble taqueria. Staff was attentive and friendly, seemed to be enjoying their jobs even. The salsas are amazing. I regularly eat spicy Mexican food and am accustomed to habanero and other powerful flavors - but I am not joking when I say the cashew salsa here is dangerously hot! Even my hardcore Mexican spice lover friends agree it's intense! Try a dot first, if you smear it all over your quesadilla you might not be able to handle it!

I'm between 3-3.5 stars. Place is pretty bare looking. I wished the menu was a bit more descriptive. Next time I'll try and load up the extra and eat it that way. We ordered a nopales, pork skin with red sauce and lomo. I didn't try the nopales, but I would order the lomo again. I will return to give others a try. Also, why aren't those Mexican Coke ever that cold?

I travel all the way from Prospect Heights to get tacos here. I cannot find any other taco spot, besides Pilsen, to eat great tasting tacos.

I loved this simple restaurant with great prices - we first got the gordita de carne asada and the tlacoyo de huitlacoche. They make their own masa - we got the gordita with yellow masa and the tlacoyo with blue masa. I liked the blue masa a bit better but both were good. Our favorite thing was the tlacoyo de huitlacoche - the huitlacoche was excellent and yummier than some other huitlacoche I've had in Chicago. The carne asada was good but my boyfriend felt (and I agreed) that we have had better carne asada. I would still happily eat it though. Then we got a pupusa de flor de calabaza and queso which was a good size and also yummy. I'd definitely come back. You can also save on a credit card fee if you pay cash and they have their own parking lot.

It accommodates a party of friends and a quiet night out for a date equally well. The service is friendly and helpful. The staff will check in regularly and make sure everything is up to snuff. The local art on display is a nice reflection of the culture and makes eating here feel more authentic. As for the food, there are a variety of menu options to choose from that you wouldn't otherwise find at other places. You have to try the tlayuda for starters. There's vegetarian and carne. It's like a giant torta! The huarache is another item you'll want to try bc it looks like a sandal topped with meat. In terms of drinks, you can order wine, beer, margaritas, tequila, and horchata. Nice when you want to dine in. Chile Toreado is a local spot you'll want to visit on a regular basis because of the good food, service, and value.

Alonzo was our waiter and he was top notch phenomenal service. The place is getting a facelift and it's for the better. The photos on here are pretty old of the outside so I recorded the way it's looking from the outside. I had the cafe de olla (it could be a little hotter) and it was delicious. The appetizer we had was the mushroom in salsa Roja. Sooo delicious. Highly recommend this. Tortilla la made from scratch so good. Since it was Good Friday we had a vegetarian meal. I had the veggie sopes and that was delicious. My dear friend had the shrimp chile rellenos and that too was deli

Everything we ordered came out fresh, well-seasoned, and they offer big portions. Definitely a strong point and the highlight of the visit. However, this is the third time service was less than impressive. There were long and noticeable gaps between check ins. It wasn't overly busy for a mid afternoon and they didn't seem short staffed. Also worth noting for those planning to stop by: gratuity is automatically included for parties of four or more. While that's not uncommon nowadays, it stood out more than it probably should have due to the slow service. Overall, the food was great, but the pace of service really put a damper on the experience. We ended up being there for close to two hours, largely due to the slow service. Toward the end of the meal, we also weren't offered a dessert menu, which made the experience feel a bit incomplete since again we were celebrating a birthday. It's unfortunate, because we came in wanting to support a local neighborhood spot. That said, the service challenges once again made it hard to fully enjoy the visit, and I'm not sure I'll be returning.
