The lady at the register was nice and super chill. I went with the baby machete this time. Basically the smallest quesadilla, but packed with meat. I ended up adding on all the extra toppings they had, just to make it extra loaded. The handmade tortilla made everything better, soft but sturdy, and held all the fillings without falling apart. The meat was tender, but honestly the salsa stole the show. Spicy, had that quick hit of heat that makes you wanna take another bite right away. Perfect balance with the tortilla and cheese. We drive by this place at least once a week so my husband and I finally decided to stop by for lunch. We both ordered their Machete which is their largest quesadilla. I had steak and chicken and he had steak and rice. I ordered rice and beans and a sprite and he had a jarrito. Our total was $39.65. I think that's pretty pricey honestly. Yes the Machetes are long but they are basically thin burritos. You can add your sauces on your own and load up on the veggies like cilantro, lettuce and onions to beef your quesadillas up at their little condiments station. I don't think I'll be back. The meat lacked seasoning. The tortillas are handmade so that's a nice touch but overall it's really lacking flavor. Cool concept just not tasty enough food to come back. I pass by this spot everyday so I decided to try it today on my off day. There is parking in the back. Upon entering there are restrooms to your left. Looks clean. The dining area is ample. There is a salsa, condiment bar. Also there is an atm there. A nice, friendly lady took my order; she's bilingual since I speak English. I had a few questions which she answered and thanked me for stopping by. The order didn't take that long. I took my food home. They separate all of your condiments for u. Once u assemble your creation it is good. I enjoyed it. The chicken flavor was ok, not the most tastiest, but good. The shell did break after a few bites but no worries there. Will I be back?? I have had the Machetes at this place about 3 times in the past month since it's close to a tech school that I am attending. It is one of my favorite places now. The chicharrón prensado en salsa verde is delicious and so is the carne asada. The best part is the salsa de cacahuate, it's hot but flavorful. You can add your own condiments to your Machete like lettuce, crema, cilantro, onions and different salsas. I say mix because otherwise you would get one item on half and then the other item on the remaining half. I recommend the mix. You wait a little bit because everything is cooked to order. First time visiting this place and wow! Being that Cicero Ave is so busy i would say this is a hidden gem, you might drive by it often like I have. Today we decided to stop in, and boy it does not disappoint. Parking in back was easy and spacious for a Sunday. Very clean inside and on a hot day it was very well cooled. We got a full machete half rajas and half chorizo, big thumbs up, I like my chorizo well done and that's how I got it, big plus as well. We also got a chicharrones prensado in salsa verde with the other half of nopales and delicious as well, their sauces are finger licking good, and don't skip on the dessert, the empanadas by the register and cajeta cookies are delicious as well, don't forget the cafe de olla. All around great place and very friendly staff, will recommend, I certainly will be retuning to try out more items from the menu!! read more

Machetes fills the void in the he area by offering incredibly long 20" tacos ("machetes") where the corn tortilla is cooked to order and the fillings are unique and authentic. A salad bar containing greens, onion, 3 salsas, and sour cream is available to top your taco as desired. My favorite order so far is 1/2 squash blossom and 1/2 nopales (cactus) machete topped with greens, red onion, mild salsa, and hot salsa. The other vegan topping options are quite unique and tasty. One option includes wild mushrooms! Minus one star for not offering a lard-less refried bean for vegan option. The only thing I did not like so much is that the hot sauce was extremely hot and I like hot. The quesadillas come with a lot of cheese. It was alright....the good is that it has parking but its basically no frills food. You order your "quesadilla" (I honestly feel there was only a sprinkle of cheese in the two choices we ordered - maybe because you order meat in it they put less cheese?") and they pass it to you at the counter, you then go to a salsa/toppings bar and hook it up. It was ok, I would have preferred the tortilla fried with a little crisp to it but a cool concept overall - I just feel like it was one big taco, maybe I need to just order plain - no meat. And this is just me - my preference - anyone serving a diverse community needs to be able to speak English and not be offended or be offensive when someone speaks to them in English. But the taco I ordered - about a foot long and filled with 2 different types of pork - was more than just grande. It was very tasty. Ok so I told my husband to pick out a place to eat, which is something I rarely do because of the types of restaurants he usually selects. He picked this place out and when we arrived I thought, "oh no he picked a trucker stop type of restaurant. Food is probably gonna be nasty." Wow was I way off! Walking in the place looked pretty clean, simple, and very spacious. We placed our orders, I ordered the junior steak machete, presentation looked good. I forgot to tell them no cheese only because most places they over stuff it with cheese but they put the perfect amount of cheese that it didn't overwhelm it. The machete was lean and filling. They also have the condiments like lettuce, tomato, and onions in an open salad bar to the side. I love homemade salsa, especially when it's super spicy and flavorful. They had just that. The delicious salsa, not as perfect as my moms salsa, but delicious. I had the Chile de árbol, yummm. I told my husband I'll never judge a book by it's cover.
