Family operated & the service reflects they are truly happy that you came by. Traveling from California, we've been sampling all the local Cuisine but definitely started craving Mexican food. This was an awesome option! Filled with locals, everybody was having a great time. Started with guacamole and shredded chicken queso dip. Then tried a variety of entrees. Loved the Chipotle Caesar, Atun tacos (grilled tuna), shrimp tacos and bean and cheese burrito. Splurged on a dessert which was delicious! Their beers were cold and the Margaritas were creative. This is a wonderful find whether your local or traveling. Highly recommend!

I couldn't wait to take a bite...before I took the picture. That good!! Carnitas Tacos...oh yeah!

I can't believe it took a trip to Gloucester, MA to find the best Mexican food I have found on the entire east coast!!! Handmade corn tortillas, tender flavor filled carnitas, delicious black beans and rice... salsa?? Shut the front door! Yummmy yum salsa and chips. Delicious ceviche! Great ambiance, perfect sized menu and we had the best server ever. Ask for Joe. Great personality, and knows this food. I know next time we are anywhere near it....we will be back!! Yeeehaw!

Let me start by saying that I lived in Texas for a year, where original Mexican recipes are utilized, so I would say that I know a thing or two about this type of cuisine. While different than Tex-Mex or authentic Mexican food down south, Machaca has managed to create a delectable experience, indeed. I'd like to start my review by talking about the service. A crucial part of any dining experience, the wait staff can make or break your evening. I am happy to report that I had excellent service. I wish I remember our waitress' name. She was super friendly, fast and knowledgeable. The expediters were also attentive and efficient. Machaca provides free chips and salsa at the table, and I tend to rate a Mexican establishment by them. The chips were not homemade, but they were fresh. The salsa was unlike any I've ever tried, both chunky and juicy too. The tomatoes were very sweet and there were ample onions and fresh cilantro. I do wish it was a little spicier, but overall, it was unique and tasty. Now, most importantly, the menu items: the menu boasts of various antojitos (appetizers) and a chowder/ salad menu for starters. For the entrees, Machaca had the clever idea of creating a menu primarily made of different styled tacos, which can also be turned into a chimichanga, burrito or burrito bowl. We first ordered drinks (I got the El Jimador/ Anejo margarita and hubby got a Lagunitas). Then we ordered the queso. Again, down south, good queso is the marks of a good restaurant, and Machaca got it REAL right. It had the perfect amount of "kick" and tender shredded pieces of chicken and even some bits of corn were deeply embedded. For dinner I ordered the Barbacoa burrito bowl and my husband got the brisket chimichanga. My barbacoa meat was scrumptious and tender, and was served over a bed of rice and lettuce with black beans and pico de gallo (chopped tomatoes and onions). However, I felt like it was missing something. Though the table provides a bottle of spicy avocado sauce, I wanted a cool texture, like a dressing, so I asked for a chipotle ranch or a lime avocado. Unfortunately, they didn't have any, so I opted for the sour cream instead. It was a great accompaniment that enriched the dish for me. My other critique would be the proportions. There was a lot of brisket, but just a little bit of rice and lettuce. I prefer to have my burrito bowls more equally balanced. My husband's brisket chimichanga was served with black beans and rice. The brisket meat was also tender. However, the chimichanga, which is supposed to have a crispy fried outer crust, was a bit soggy/ doughy/ under cooked. Though I am unable to score with half marks, I would truly give Machaca a 4.5 if I could. The soggy chimichanga, disproportional burrito bowl and embarrassing spelling mistakes on the menu took the star rating down a few points for me. But it wasn't enough to drop their score completely to a 4. If you love Mexican food, and are looking for good service, and a new, cool, trendy, funky place to enjoy it in the heart of downtown Gloucester, I would recommend Machaca for sure.

We were downtown already parked, so it involved a 12 minute walk out to the brewery but it was still very worth it, easy to get to via the great sidewalk system within the city. It looks like an old converted house that now has an open floor plan with a tiny bar, walk up service (no wait staff) for all of your food/drink needs and then maybe about a dozen tables with some video games in the back. It's not a huge place and I was kind of surprised we didn't have any kind of view of the brewing area unless it doesn't take place on site. We were glad we chose to eat lunch here, not only for the inventive offerings but also because of the prices. It's getting harder and harder to find even lunch items for less than $15 but everything we got was just that. The pizza was pretty meh but the kids didn't seem to mind. I'm always a sucker for excellent grain mustard that pairs well with pretzels and it definitely did here. The curry chicken salad sandwich was the standout for me, perfectly seasoned with a good amount of complimentary grapes and the house made bread really put it all together. Now I wish we had gotten two of them. I had a New England IPA that was cloudy and fruity, an excellent pairing with the pretzels and sandwich. Not the best brewery in the world and a bit small but it serves the needs of one of New England's quaint seaside towns. My biggest disappointment was not seeing one single TV while we were in there for a Patriots game that was about to start.

I actually would go as far as saying they are underrated in talks of all the breweries in Maine. They have always been a brewery with a vast amount of variety in their styles they brew. Such as IPAs, fruited sours, porters, stouts, lagers, and so many more. Enough variety you could visit and all your party could find their style. They also deserve a lot of credit for being one of the first if not the first in the state to jump on the non-alcoholic train for beers. This has expanded to basically be as varied in style as their usual beers now. I actually enjoyed their NA Mexican Lager and it was delicious and would be a great option for those looking for NA beers. My wife grabbed their NA seltzer and enjoyed it as well. Since that expansion they have also moved into adaptogen beverages as well as CBD/THC drinks too. They keep expanding their portfolio while also doing what they already do so well! Also for non beer drinkers they did have some bourbon and other spirits available as well. Really great options for all who show up! They don't offer food themselves besides some free popcorn, which was seasoned perfectly! Although if feeling like more food swing in next door to Weathervine and grab some food before to pair with your drink. The bartender was very friendly and apologized when my first choice kicked and from his interactions with other patrons it is clear Woodland Farms cares about their customers! A spot my wife and I will make sure to return to sooner rather than later. You should check it out as well!

The two met when they both worked at a brewery in Honolulu. Once returning to Rhode Island, the couple decided to open their own gastropub in Stephanie's hometown of Westerly. Dubbed "The Malted Barley", the business focused on craft beer paired with gourmet pretzel sandwiches. The pretzel dough is made fresh daily, and every pretzel is rolled and stuffed by hand. After much success, the Bennetts looked to franchise their business model. After signing a licensing agreement with investor Ron Koller, a second Malted Barley opened in Providence in March 2016. In March 2023, the Bennetts closed the original Malted Barley in Westerly so that they could focus on their flower farm, Echo Rock Flowers, as well as their family. The Malted Barley in Providence continues to run under the ownership of Ron Koller. I visited the original Westerly location of the Malted Barley in 2014 while I was on a craft beer bus tour. I was so impressed with their excellent craft beer selection and delicious gourmet pretzels that I decided to make the gastropub a stop on my craft beer bachelor party bus tour three years later. I was very sad when I heard that the original location closed down, but I took comfort in knowing that a second location still existed in Providence. I recently visited the Providence location for lunch while I was passing through the area. When I walked in, I immediately smelled the freshly baked pretzels. For food, I ordered the "Barley Bacon Beast Burger" (75 % beef 25 % bacon patty, pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, more bacon w/ a side of ketchup) on an Everything Pretzel. It really hit the spot. I must add that these pretzels are essentially a hybrid between traditional Bavarian pretzels and New York-style bagels: salty and crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. While looking over the beer menu, I was surprised to see that the Malted Barley now brews their own house beer in addition to guest taps. I ordered a taster flight that featured Malted Barley's "Banana Bread" (Traditional Ale) and "Monster Juice" (Hazy IPA), as well as Long Live Beerworks' "Invisible IPA" (hazy IPA) and Phantom Farms Brewing's "Coarse Woody Debris" (Saison). All of the beers were very refreshing and paired nicely with my pretzel sandwich. I still miss the original Westerly location, but it's nice to know that you can still find delicious pretzels sandwiches paired with craft beer just a little further away.
