When I dream about my trip to Italy this is the place that always starts my dream. It is everything I loved about Italian restaurants; loud, aromatic, and friendly. This is also where I was introduced to Carbonara! I can honestly say that they have the best Carbonara in Rome. It is perfectly creamy, peppery, and oh so flavorful. I do recommend reservations. I suggest asking for a table in front of the kitchen windows for the best experience. If not, get a table outside and enjoy the great weather and people watching. I am seriously shocked that anyone would rate this restaurant highly. Perhaps we went on a (very) off night? We didn't have a restaurant planned for one of our nights in Rome and so I took to yelp to find a place near our apartment. Here's the deal: - the wine was easily the best part of the meal, and it wasn't even that great. - the bread was totally tasteless. - the cacio è pepe was the heaviest, creamiest thing in the world (which are usually words I like when it comes to pasta). You couldn't take more than 2 bites of it without wanting to empty the contents of your stomach. - the chicken cacciatore was NOTHING like what cacciatore is supposed to be. It was as if when making the gravy for this dish the chef tripped and fell and spilled the entire container of pepper into the pan. I couldn't get past the sheer pepper flavor to fully experience the chicken. No tomato, no vegetables in the sauce (though there were fresh tomatoes on the side). Chicken tasted like chicken but that's about all we can say about it. - the carbonara is literally worse than kraft macaroni and cheese (in both color and taste) with a few pieces of uncooked bacon. Seriously. - the meatballs tasted like they were from a frozen dinner. These were probably the best food we got, which should tell you about the quality of this restaurant.... - the osso bucco... I don't even know where to start. First of all, the color: a weird, neon orange that made it look nasty. The texture was a chewy, rubbery mess that was very unfortunate and not at all reminiscent of well-cooked osso bucco. This was easily the worst dish anyone ordered. In conclusion, please spend your money elsewhere if you want to eat well in Rome (try Sora Margherita in the Jewish ghetto if you're looking for a great meal! Oh Rome....how I miss you. Maccheroni was one of my favorite stops when visiting beautiful Rome. We were recommended by a local for the incredible Carbonara and it did not disappoint. We did have a reservation but arrived late, so seating was a little hard to come by. We split a soup (which they put in two bowls without complaining/charging us), had the amatriciana and arrabiata pastas, split the osso buco, and split strawberries and cream. We were both very full and everything was excellent, especially the soup and amatriciana. The ossobuco was very big and flavorful, although not quite as tender as would have been ideal (this could have been because the place was closing and they just wanted to get it out). The pastas are also legitimately al dente. With house wine, this amounted to a great 4 course dinner for 63 euros. My husband and I ate here twice during our 3 night stay in Rome - once for dinner and once for lunch. First of all, the ambiance and set up of the restaurant is great - lots of seating, an open view of the kitchen - fantastic! And the service is great as well, even on a busy night. When we came for dinner, we ordered two of the most popular dishes - the Carbonara and the Cacio e Pepe. We were expecting heaven on a plate and ended up being quite disappointed. The food was good, but it wasn't something we couldn't make at home. We felt that it was missing that oomph factor! Well, my husband decided that he wanted to give it another shot, so we came back from lunch in a couple of days. This time we ordered a cheese plate to start (A MUST - great selection that pairs well with the house red!). And we also ordered the gorgonzola gnocchi and pasta arrabbiata. Visited Maccheroni for lunch on the first day of my trip to Rome. Well situated near the Pantheon, they have the cutest interior which includes glass windows to watch the chefs at work. They also have outdoor seating along the edge of the restaurant. There were two things that caught us off-guard. We arrived at 12:00 (opening time according to Yelp) and were informed that the restaurant did not open until 12:30 (which I later confirmed is on their website). We requested to sit outside until they opened and were told we could not. So, we walked to the Pantheon and took it in and then returned. The second complication was that they did not take credit cards; I'm not sure if this is a one-time occurence, or if they never take credit cards. I had the black truffle pasta, which was excellent. The pasta itself was perfect al dente. The truffle sauce was light and not too overpowering, which can be difficult to achieve! Went with the house wine with our entrees, and I must say you really cannot go wrong with the house wine. Would definitely return when I am back in Rome! read more

One of the best meals we have eaten! My partner and I decided on this restaurant based on the lonely planet guide. We chose two pasta dishes, spaghetti carbonara and ravioli with spinach and ricotta. We both cannot speak highly enough of our dishes. My carbonara was perfect, not oily, yet full of flavour and the pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked. My girlfriend's ravioli was also perfectly cooked, and the spinach and ricotta filling was fresh, and not in any way processed like a store bought pasta. It was clear that everything was hand made here. To add to this the surrounds are lovely and we had two separate musicians going around serenading the people at the restaurants in the vicinity. A massive two thumbs from each of these happy customers, I'd give it more than five stars if I could. A definite go to restaurant in my book. read more

This restaurant came highly recommended so my expectation was high. The place is huge and a bit tight --- seems like they have put a table anywhere they can. We went for dinner without reservations but managed to get a table. For starters, we had the artichoke "roman style" which was like a braised --- artichokes were in season so that was a good start. Then we had the gnocchi with gorgonzola and pear --- the gnocchi was pillowy and nice and there was a good balance of the gorgonzola and pear. For secondi, we had the osso buco which was a bit of a let down. It was not as tender and a bit dry. For dessert, I had the zabaione which was light and creamy. I suggest to stick to the pasta dishes. The service was friendly though a bit rushed. They say that people join this site for a reason and I've found mine. Based on word of mouth we decided to check out Maccheroni. Suffice to say, the most enjoyable part of the experience was leaving. What was wrong? Where do I start? 1. Show up at about 9:30 and were asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. When we said outside they told us we could only sit inside. Well why ask then? And were the 10 open tables outside too good for us? One star down. 2. We get seated in the back of the restaurant away from any door not getting any breeze. Why is that important? The temperature on the two A.C. units fluctuated between 29 & 32 degrees C. Yeah that's 84-89 degrees F. Who on earth keeps it hotter inside than it is outside? Not only that, we get sat beneath the menus and olive oil meaning were getting reached over constantly. There were four other open tables in the room. Two stars down. 3. Every dish was literally dropped in front of us on the table. Good customer service. Three stars down. 4. Server forgot we ordered Osso Bucco as a second course. Even better customer service. Four stars down. 5. Osso Bucco came out like dog food with mystery orange colored sauce. I'd take away the last star but I can't. Wait there's more. 6. Getting charged 2€ for bottled tap water. We sat next to the tap and watched them fill their bottles the whole night. 7. Most of the wait staff spent their time outside smoking while we sat around waiting for service. 8. They let in one of those street vendors that walks around selling roses. I've seen many other restaurants chase those people away. Way to add to the atmosphere. Don't waste your time or money. To preface this review, let me say that the experience was a solid 3.5 but Yelp has yet to allow for the middle ground rating. We called last minute for a reservation and were told that they could take us but we would have to sit inside. It turned out this was preferable, as we were seated right next to the kitchen (enclosed in windows) so we could watch the Italian chefs in action. I really enjoyed this experience and watching all the meals coming out, however, I did see a bit too much prepared food (i.e. bags of pre cooked pasta) for my idealized version of how an Italian chef should be cooking in the kitchen. The place was busy, but the ambiance was great. I opted for the zucchini flower ravioli which had an intense zucchini flavor and well cooked pasta, but was less cheesy than desired. My husband opted for the pasta carbonara which he was quite happy with. I must admit, I found his pasta a little gummy but the flavor of the sauce was nice. We followed it up with a plate of meatballs- a large plate to be sure- but of inconstant quality. Half of the meatballs were incredibly dry and seemed to be mostly breadcrumbs, while the other half seemed to be of a slightly better quality- overall nothing impressive. We did really enjoy our sgarppino (a vodka, lemon sorbet and cream mixture) that we had as dessert. It was creamy, cold and lemony- the perfect end to a heavy meal. We arrived around 8pm and we were seated inside immediately as e outside had all been reserved or seated. We didn't know that reservations were suggested but the staff was helpful and seated us none the less. The next two nights we suffered mediocre meals, so made sure to make reservations here for our last night in Rome. The ravioli was wonderful. The chicken cacciatore is not what I would have expected in the US, but exactly as advertised on the menu. The service was very friendly, even though the place got progressively busier, as we sat down at 7:30 pm (early by Italian standards). I would definitely recommend this place for dinner, but make reservations so you don't have to sit outside (especially if you are bothered by cigarette smoke!). read more
